Title: Get rich with: AirBnB?
Post by: El TD on November 06, 2013, 02:36:06 PM
Two interesting articles about using Airbnb as supplementary income. The first is more mustachian. http://www.fastcompany.com/3021179/secrets-of-running-a-six-figure-airbnb-business (http://www.fastcompany.com/3021179/secrets-of-running-a-six-figure-airbnb-business)
A day trader leases apartments and then rents them out on Airbnb - netting $2000 per month, per apartment. He's got six now.

The second struck me a less mustachian with the owners reliance on the labor of others and expensive gadgets. Still, he took advantage of a perfect storm of an unmet need and the collapsed real estate market (without considering the totally un-mustachian reasons why both those conditions came to be).

What does the MMM community say to this?

I'm renting out my apartment while I am away this weekend. Going to make and extra $97, the trip will cost $50.

From what I read about this, a lot of these people are skirting or downright breaking laws related to hotel regulation.  It's a big grey area.  Interesting exploit of the system, though :)

I've been considering renting my guest room on AirBnB and using the money to pay down my mortgage.  It is in a desirable Seattle location, and our place is almost brand new, however, I have two kids (8 & 10) and I have safety concerns with potentially having strangers in the house.  I also don't know how desirable adults would find our house (my kids are fairly quiet...but they are kids...and I wouldn't want anyone to have a bad experience).  We live in a townhouse and the lower level has a guest room and private bath (which we barely use and is wasted space).  So the entrance would be shared, along with (possibly) the kitchen.   Any thoughts or experiences anyone would like to share?  Thank you!

I know that if I was travelling, with my wife and new baby I wouldn't mind a place with kids, that way I would know you are safe to stay with... etc.

Also Airbnb isn't a hotel situation renters have no 'right' to stay with you. You are allowed to say know if you are concerned for any reason. We have already said no to one person simple because timing was bad for us and they had no profile information.
