Frugal Movie Star Baffles Hollywood
« on: September 02, 2014, 07:28:41 PM »
Found this on a twitter feed. Movie legend Montgomery Clift was a thrifty man who, despite his millions, lived in a small apartment and didn't "go Hollywood" after becoming famous. From 1950, here's the article.

A spendthrift is one who spends extravagantly.

Thanks for posting the article CK.  I wasn't aware that Clift lived so frugally.  That's pretty rare in his profession.

I also enjoyed the comments about him not dating Hollywood starlets!

"He spent several hundred dollars on a machine that makes Italian Coffees."  Now THAT is definitely a pre-Starbucks Mustachian!

Isn't it just? :) He spent money on what mattered to to him.

Duly noted and amended.

Very rare, considering the social pressure and the fact that it's news when you don't spend. Poor guy. Well, at least most of us can be frugal in private, which helps.

About the starlets, I had to grin there myself.

Best,

Thanks for this. I had never heard of that song. Were they obsessed with Monty Clift? His famous car crash seems a random thing to sing about. Anyway, interesting addition to the legend.

Keanu Reeves lived in cheap apartments most of his career.  He gave away $75 million of his Matrix earnings to his makeup crew and said "money is the last thing i think about".

A modern one. Thanks. I'm off to follow this rabbit trail of Reeves info.

Omgosh I dig me some Monty.  I highly recommend the classic movie Red River if you've never seen it.  John Wayne is villainous and Montgomery Clift is dreamy in it.

Interesting bio, thanks for posting the Wikipedia link. Tragic line in the article, " He figures in the long run that attitude will pay off," regarding spending little. Too bad about the accident. For what it's worth I don't think this guy was actually frugal, just so involved with his work and disinterested in the trappings of Hollywood. Frugality implies being pretty involved in your finances, Clift didn't even know how much he had in the bank!

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
