For the ladies!
« on: January 21, 2016, 06:11:00 AM »
I just saw this on my feed and loved it!  No one really tells women how their financial decisions spiral out and effect lots of other decisions going forward.

I read that, and I really liked it.  Seems like it's a good way to get the point across.

This was beautiful, and I know so many women who wish they knew it. Saved to share with friends who teach or work with the young ones

I love this so much.

And, to be completely honest: I DID have a fuck you fund. And when my first serious boyfriend thought that a good way of ending an argument was to smack me across the face, I had options and I left him. When the sales guy I worked with tried to grope me, I stopped that so fast I'm pretty sure his head is still spinning. And when my second boss tried to get me to falsify financial documents (in a publicly owned company, no less, yay fraud...) and threatned to fire me if I didn't, I had the ability to look up at him and inform him that if he fired me for that, I had copies of the documents at home and enough money to live on while I reported the financial discrepancies and investigated legal options regarding wrongful dismissal.

These are not uncommon examples. A lot of ladies go through similar shit. Having the power to say 'fuck off, I'm not taking this shit' is worth WAY more than any new car.

This is honestly the thing I needed today. My sister is in a situation where she really needs a FoF. I wish she did and I do. Maybe a little of it will be used to help her. Maybe this is the kick she needs. Who knows but its the best thing I have seen to empower women!

My mom didn't (and still doesn't) have a FoF, and that's the #1 reason I worked hard in college & my career, to never need to depend on a man in an unhealthy relationship. Thank you for opening up about your story.

To be honest, I found that really depressing, because that first story takes place in reality more than it ever should.

The piece does get an important point across, effectively.  The only thing it's missing is this: the FOF is only step one.  Ladies (and men), shoot for a FI fund.  That account balance can have more zeroes or commas in it, and the freedom and security it offers is correlated to its size.

I think the real reason I liked this article is that it gives good tangible real world scenarios for how money buys freedom.  This example uses women's issues to frame it in an easily digestible way, but it can apply to anyone.

:)  The Mustachian ladies may just be unusual enough to find it hard to relate very closely to the article (which makes sense, it was meant for a broad audience.)

"So, the $2900 in the FOF, you saved that just this month, right?  How many months do you have left to FIRE, did you buy VTSAX during this last correction, and what cool thing from Erica's book are you trying this week?"

We're an odd lot, in a good way.

I read this piece yesterday and just loved it. I think it applies to anyone who doesn't want to be trapped in a shitty life situation. I certainly wish this was written when I was 22!

I had the first story. All of it.

Now, four years later, I'm in the place for the second scenario.

Thank heavens for the FU fund.  It allowed me to move out with the kids, have a place to live and money to fight with if I had needed it.  Awesome article!

I just told my wife she could move 50k to a special account so she could tell me to fuck off if necessary. Since she is an accountant and controls all our money she asked if it was a better idea for me to have the special account with such a small percentage of our money! True story :)

Love the article. Money is powerful, both as a tool and as a master.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
