CBS News: Video on FIRE
« on: November 21, 2017, 09:34:53 AM »

CBC News' Money Watch had a segment on the FIRE community.

It's mainstream, but the woman seems to overlook that many FIers will unlock their 401k via the Roth Ladder (small complaints).

You can hear the anchor's shock - "50%??!!" (discussing savings rate)

Once again, we're a "cult" in the media, with the focus being on "pain and sacrifice" to reach "incredible" savings rates of 50%.

...would be nice if they had actually talked to a FIRE individual.  Oh well, at least the idea is out there for a few more to grab onto.

A lot more people are becoming aware of FIRE lately and that's a good thing. The corporations don't like it, but whatever. It's just business.

The anchor says, "lots of sacrifice more than once" However, no sacrifices were mentioned. She also said that the sacrifice could be worth it. Is it really a sacrifice at that point? Isn't it just prioritizing something over something else.

I love my $2000 car. Many would consider it to be a sacrifice. I do not.

I would hate to have a 9 to 5 job. I typically work 1,000 hours/year instead of the normal 2,000/year. It would be a huge sacrifice for me to have a typical corporate job. However, others consider it normal and not a sacrifice.

Arrrgh! It's not 25x your income, it's 25x your expected spending.

And the "concern" from financial advisors is about your feelings of work inadequacy and socialization. Thanks! I didn't know you cared.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
