In my personal experience, it's better/easier to identify the type of commercial vodka that has the best taste/price ratio for you. For me, it turns out that I like corn-based vodka, which tends to be moderately priced; YMMV of course.
Many USian vodkas are made from corn, and I find it provides the best combination of neutral flavor and minimal after-burn. I honestly prefer it over the likes of Grey Goose, etc., which tend to have too much alcohol-burn on the back end. My initial discovery of corn vodka was with a relatively pricey local distillery, but I later found Tito's, which is a moderately priced national option with similar flavor.
