The article seems to suggest he uses a flip phone because of technical illiteracy or inertia, but I understand he is frugal in other respects.

This part is what kills me. Almost started laughing out loud in the quiet section in my University Library.

(Apple CEO Tim Cook has said he would fly to Omaha to help Buffett set a new iPhone up.

“I told him I’ll personally come out to Omaha and do tech support for him,” Cook said in an interview last year.)

Thanks for the post!

When you have that much money, you can’t afford to have your smartphone compromised

If I had a full time personal assistant, I wouldn't have a smart phone.

I have a team of support staff at the office and my phone stays off during the day. It's great. I would love to have someone handle my phone for me so that I never have to use it.

HA! I totally agree. It's a funny bit of camouflage, being FI but not material/luxury focused. I have the luxury of 4 full-time assistants and a full-time attorney working for me (I own a law firm which I could found/grow BECAUSE of mustachianism). So, my phone is hardly ever used for complex tasks and I don't like using it. As a result, I have a cheap phone people say makes me frugal - while missing the fact that I have a team of people! The team of people is the luxury!

I'm sure Buffett has at least one business assistant, but I've not heard or read about him having a personal assistant or valet who follows him everywhere he goes, including home or on vacation.

I couldn't help but think of:

I'm down with Bill Gates, I call him Money for short!  I phone him up at home and I make him do my tech support!
