CHS, IMO, mirrors much of what MMM says about individual self reliance, having a broad set of skills, living frugally, cultivating relationships (social capital in CHS's nomenclature), DIY, etc.

I see this post of CHS as a direct contrast to the whiner, now busted, in the post:
