Aussie family of 5 lives on 23k
« on: November 12, 2015, 06:05:47 PM »
I was recently delighted to find  this post from a blog I visit often: http://www.debtfreecashedupandlaughing.com.au/2015/11/how-we-are-going-to-live-on-really.html. , where she explains her budget and references the  Australian Moneysmart table re comfortable and modest living requirements (https://www.moneysmart.gov.au/superannuation-and-retirement/how-super-works/super-contributions/how-much-is-enough,)  and explains that the 5 adults in her family live on 23k, equivalent to a modest sum for a single person. Pretty badass.

Cath at DebtFree Cashed up and Laughing  seems to have dedicated her life to what she calls Cheapskating with a lot of what she calls MOOing (Make Our Own), and works at home on her blog/website.  So in one sense she's employed full-time saving money for the family, not so easy to reproduce for everyone.   She doesn't really spell it out but her 3 "adult" children living at home I guess probably have p/t jobs to buy their own stuff ( since for example there is only costing for 2 mobile phones)…and she's really talking about total cost of living for her hubbie and herself  and "board" for the kids.   Nevertheless, I had no idea she could get their expenses so low and its definitely inspirational.

Awesomely badass. I assume that they own their house.

I don't believe the figures in relation to groceries though. We consistently hit $200-$250 per week on groceries with a family of 5 and we shop at ALDI.

Yes, they own their own house. I got interested in her site because she manages to keep food costs to 320/month.
