Title: A Mustachian NFL player
Post by: Stairway to Stache on August 04, 2015, 02:01:38 PM
Saw this today from business insider on yahoo finance.

Apparently Baltimore Ravens guard John Urschel lives a mustachian lifestyle and drives a used, compact car and lives a frugal lifestyle. Quite different than your typical pro athlete

He's also a published mathematician, so he might just fit right in around here. Wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of one of his face-punches, though!

As a Penn State Alumni, I have followed this guys story since he became a starter-  This guy is rocket scientist smart, gives a lot of his time to mentoring kids in Math and couldn't make his fellow alums any prouder.  Football is just his current gig... he is going to do great things with his life.

Here is a good bio:

Ryan Broyles sticks to a $60 budget despite his $900k avg salary.

I'd like to see that "Financial Football" game in action!

I saw this on Facebook too, while $60k isn't Mustachian by most standards here I think he wins the savings rate game for most of us :)

Yes, he beats most, but maybe not all. There's a lot of tax on $900k. And some of us spend quite a bit less than $60k. So I think some of us could get close. But he's doing very well. Call it 40% tax for him, and that's an 88% savings rate. So he's got me beat.

True. At the income levels we see many elite athletes being paid, the tax rates can be quite high. Phil Mickelson complained about that a few years back, being a California resident in the top bracket and losing something like 55-60% to taxes (which, I'm not sure that's accurate? But that's what he said at the time). If Broyles can play in a few more games over the next few years, he will qualify for the NFL's pension, though, which should be an additional safety net for him to fall back on.

It's good to see that at least some of them are thinking intelligently about the future.  These guys aren't stars, but they are smart, and they won't end up broke like Terrell Owens, Vince Young, and so many other idiots who were broke within months of their careers ending, despite making 10's of millions of dollars.

I read this too and loved it!  Like others here, I also admire Baltimore Ravens resident math genius John Urschel who recently tweeted out a photo of his Nissan Versa in the Ravens parking lot, looking ever so dainty between two huge honking trucks.  Can't figure out how to post it but he tweets at @MathMeetsFBall.

This is always nice to see. Daniel Norris still beats him though (see link below). We need more examples of high earners doing this.

Warren Buffett is like this, relative to his extreme wealth.

The ultimate challenge is to find a frugal rapper.

The ultimate challenge is to find a frugal rapper.

I'm imagining a rapper wearing "gold" chains made of paperclips, riding on his bike (with hoopty rims of course), and pouring tap water on the strippers from a reused champagne bottle. His lyrics heavily feature lentils and oats.

This sounds like a Macklemore music video.

Rappet Kendrick Lamar revently bought a modest 524k house outside of LA :)  His net worth was 9 million (Forbes 2013).  So relative to this net worth and HCOL living area, I would say frugal :)  He is probably the biggest name in rap lately.

Ryan Broyles has a made a dramatic change from his first year in college super proud for him.  He was suspended at OU for his freshman season due to a issue.
