Had to google.  For anyone else curious, to save you the work, it's a sewing machine.

(Though I just asked my wife "Do you know what a Singer Serger is?" while typing this, and she said "Uh, it's a sewing machine?" so it may just be me.  Figured I'd post anyways, cause there's probably SOMEONE else out there as ignorant as I.  :)  )

It is a very special sewing machine that 'finishes' edges of fabrics.  It is used for fabrics that tend to unravel like sweat shirt material.  Source: Me and a painful expensive marriage to a ex who was craft-y with fabrics.

Think of it like a special tool to a mechanic, very obvious to someone in the trade not so much to anyone else.

I didn't even think of defining what a serger was :">

Actually a serger  (or an overlocker as they are called here) is the machine used to sew t-shirts together, finish all of the edges of fabric in garments (whether the fabric is woven or knitted - sweatshirt material is one type of knit), make rolled edges...

You can make things entirely with an overlocker, just as you can make them entirely with a sewing machine. There is a third machine called a cover stitch machine that does a lot of hems (if you look at the hem on your tshirt is is almost certainly a cover stitch). Some overlockers do both. Overlockers are very popular, as they give a professional finish to garments. It has got to the stage where a lot of sewing machine shops sell a package of both the overlocker and the sewing machine whenever they have a special (you know, two for the price of one). And most people I know who do any sewing have both.

I want one so bad but I probably can't afford it :-). How much do the older ones go for?

I was thinking $100-ish.  And you pay shipping

That's not outlandish but I guess I'm not ready to pull the trigger on adding it to my life :-). Plus I'm doing a January spending detox and not buying anything.

I would LOVE one! But, I suspect shipping for my situation will be too much. Where is it located?

Shipping to Australia would be pricy as I am in Chicago.

It is an old (~15 years old) basic one.  But I do have all the original accessories and owners manual.
