We're a grad student and a software professional, moving to the area to follow my advisor. Looking for a 1-2BR apartment in the $1-1.5k range. Area of interest is roughly bounded by Lake Ave/Caltech, I-210, Huntington Dr. and Santa Anita wash.

Based on how the market looks on Craigslist, Zillow, Trulia, etc (as well as our schedules this month!) we were planning to come in homeless and then look, so if someone can offer temporary accommodations that would be awesome. Or if you're looking to rent an apt to some nice, responsible, clean tenants 10-12 days hence, I'd like to get in touch, too.

I no longer live in that area so can't offer a place to stay but you should definitely be able to find decent housing in that price range. Craigslist is going to be your best bet for housing. There is a pay-for-searching service called westside rentals (or something like that) but everyone I know found more listings on craigslist.

Don't be afraid to extend your search a little farther east though! I would expand the range all the way over to Rosemead Ave. There are some nice neighborhoods in there and the rent is usually cheaper than right by campus.

Thanks for the advice :) I'd actually prefer to live more between Rosemead and just east of Santa Anita; my bf will be working close to I-210 and Huntington, so we'd like to live roughly halfway, maybe closer to his work because I'm more open to a longer bike ride (he has to be "professional" or something). So definitely not afraid to extend out east!

Hello from a Caltech graduate! Pasadena is a great area and I am sure you will love it. It might be further west than you are looking for, but have you considered Caltech graduate housing? It is definitely within your price range, see prices here: http://www.housing.caltech.edu/grad/rates_2014-2015.asp.

If you have any questions about Caltech or Pasadena, let me know.

I did...since I'm going to be a non-degree student (I'm too far in the program for it to be worth transferring), I don't get priority on housing like first-year students do, and basically they told me it was highly unlikely we'd be able to get couples housing (i.e. apartment). So we're on our own. Thanks for the suggestion!
