On the lookout for a high safety non-thirsty hatch in Sydney AU

Hey guys long shot but if anyone happens to be offloading a car, my family will  be picking up a new-to-us one soon!

budget is small, the cheaper the better. Looking at some late 00s Holden Barinas, Suzuki Alto, along those lines.

I know someone offloading their VW Golf but it's diesel so not sure how thirsty it is and they're looking for $8000+. If interested, PM me so I can send you their Gumtree link.
