Looking for backpacking backpack
« on: May 15, 2016, 11:39:16 AM »
I'm in search of a high-quality backpack to take with me this August on a 3-day trip in the boundary waters.  I'm looking for something with 50+L capacity from a reputable brand (black diamond, north face, kelty, osprey, gregory, granite gear, etc).
Let me know if you have one you're looking to part with!

Hey,  I don't have one worth shipping BUT i have an alternative mustachian idea  If you live remotely close to an REI get a membership ($20) and go the the members only garage sale the 1st sat of each month (sometimes sunday too).  You can get great new/newish gear at a huge discount and beatenup but serviceable gear for nothing.

Examples:  1) Osprey Aether 70 - $10 -  aesthetically beat, but cleaned up well enough.  It has been on numerous backpacking trips and around the world.  Just check the connections, the frames and integrity of the fabric and zippers.  I think it is about $280 new.
I have also gotten tents, sleeping bags, hiking boots that were never or barely worn for 20%-30% of retail price

MOST IMPORTANT though is have an idea of what you are looking for and make sure the pack fits correctly, it could make a big difference in terms of your enjoyment of the trip, people at the store can help you with that if you aren't sure.

Good luck.

I'm going to try this myself. Thanks for the suggestion!

Three days in the BWCAW? Just rent a duluth pack from the outfitter for $20. You don't want a backpack  as they don't sit right in the canoe and are more prone to getting wet. The Mountain Hardwear ones are pretty slick that my paddling partners have rented before. I'm more of the traditionalist with the Duluth pack though.
