Mustachian in Non-Mustachian book club.
« on: May 23, 2014, 08:50:17 AM »
Hey learned Mustachians.

The Situation:  Person in a book club of (probable) non-Mustachian females.  Has the opportunity to choose any book they wish - but secretly wants to get people thinking about Mustachian tendencies.  Does anyone have a book nomination that might surreptitiously introduce some ideas to get people talking...

Much appreciated!

EDIT : THE LIST

- The millionaire next door (TMND) -
- Your money or your life (YMOYL) -
- The story of stuff - Annie Leonard
- Overdressed: The Shockingly High Cost of Cheap Fashion - Elisabeth Cline
- An Everlasting Meal - Tamar Adler
- Confessions of a Shopaholic - Sophie Kinsella
- Animal, Vegetable, Miracle - Barbara Kingsolver
- Walden (or Life in the Woods) - Henry David Thoreau
- Living the Good Life - Linda Cockburn
- Hit by a Farm - Catherine Friend

The Millionaire Next Door?

That's what immediately came to mind for me.

YMOYL is a good one, but TMND is an easier read (not that either are difficult, it's just lighter).
I am a former teacher who accumulated a bunch of real estate, retired at 29, spent some time traveling the world full time and am now settled with three kids.
If you want to know more about me, this Business Insider profile tells the story pretty well.

The Story of Stuff by Annie Leonard.  It does not touch on all mustachian principles but it describes the ugly side of consumerism.

this is definitely more tangentially related, but avonlea's suggestion made me think of Overdressed: The Shockingly High Cost of Cheap Fashion by Elisabeth Cline. haven't read it but been meaning to :)

I have read rocksinmyhead's suggested book, Overdressed: The Schokingly High Cost of Cheap Fasion and agree it could be helpful in terms of getting not Mustachians to think about their consumerism.

And this reminds of of another tangential recommendation, this one about food: An Everlasting Meal by Tamar Adler. It's a very poetically written book about how to cook that focuses very much on not letting anything go to waste. So good.

If you're looking for something fiction, how about "Confessions of a Shopaholic" by Sophie Kinsella?  It sounds like the most anti-mustachian book out there, but actually it's about working through the consequences of poor financial decision-making and really depicts the emotional aspects of overspending amazingly well. And Sophie Kinsella's books are very charming and funny. The lead character's learning curve is very steep, which may be more appealing to non-mustachians than non-fiction. At the very least, it would open some good conversations!

Hey all, thanks for the suggestions.  They are being weighed up  - book choice isn't required for a few more months.  So, keep any suggestions coming.  This also might serve as a nice list of surreptitious materials for getting an SO or friend thinking!!  An ice breaker if you will.

I shall list them in the OP.

Are you looking for fiction or non-fiction? Another couple of non-fiction ones could be: Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver, Walden by Thoreau or Living the Good Life by Linda Cockburn for an Australian take on things. More about the simple living side of things than consumerism but that could be a bit more accessible. I read Hit by a Farm by Catherine Friend recently and enjoyed that a lot, too.

I quite liked 'The Geography of Bliss' when my book club did it a few years back.

Not overtly Mustachian, but it might prompt discussion on what happiness is, and whether you need money to have it.
