IF YOU CAN: How Millennials Can Get Rich Slowly
« on: August 04, 2014, 09:19:10 AM »
Just in case it's useful, thought I'd share this booklet written by William Bernstein for those of us who are young'uns: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/29031758/If%20You%20Can.pdf

Booklet itself is short but comes with a reading list!

It's lacking in financial independence topics, but shows how a 15% savings rate invested in a three-fund portfolio will make any person ready for retirement in the conventional number of years, a great starting point for most young people who know nothing about investing or savings.  I haven't started the reading list yet because a couple of the books have new versions coming out soon, but I'm a big fan of Bernstein. Most of the young folks on this forum are already more advanced than what the book covers, but it's so short it's worth a read anyway.

Thanks for posting! While nothing groundbreaking for most people on this site, this booklet can certainly point most people of my generation, who are financially illiterate, in the right direction.

I think it's a good, solid base of information to start from for pretty much any young person.  Then, if you and they are so inclined, you can nudge them more towards reject consumerism/Mustachianism stuff.  ;)

I think it is a good introduction for an intelligent 20-something.  Maybe not the average 20-something.  He says somewhere in the text that he wrote it with his grandchildren in mind, and he very likely has smart grandkids.  He uses a lot of obscure vocabulary, which I think might scare off the average reader.

I found it useful mostly as a reading list.  Each of five sections has "homework" which is to go read a book or two on a few specific topics.  Some I had read, others I had not.
