Looks like Moll Flanders is free if you buy the $0 kindle book first too.
A Little Princess has a $1 audio if the free Kindle edition is bought first.

Yep, I can confirm the Moll Flanders Free audio book.

Thanks for posting this, Serpentstooth! Very cool. I picked up a Bujold audio book for my first free 'full price'

Any other ones you recommend for an epic/high/urban fantasy reader?

Serpentstooth,
This is perfect for me, as I've been very bored at work lately. Listening to audtio books is the perfect solution. One question, tho. I'm listening to the book I bought using the browser. Is there any way to turn off the background music? Its hard for me to separate spoken voice from background sounds and I can't seem to figure out how to make it just be voice only.

For epics I really think Pillars of the Earth and Mists of Avalon can't be beat, though you've probably already read them. Ditto American Gods.

Yep, read all three of those. Not a big hurry, tho. I have until next month when my next credit becomes available anyway.

You know, I've never bought an audiobook that had background music! So I have no idea, but you might check the settings?

BTW, I've been digging and there are a LOT more public domain classics that are 99 cents when you buy the kindle audiobook. Kidnapped is another. Search around for various classics on Audible. They'll tell you what the price will be if you purchase the Kindle version first, and most of those books have free Kindle versions.

Huh, maybe the background music is just part of the audio file? Annoying as heck, and wasn't mentioned in the reviews. Oh, well.

A funny thing I've noticed on a lot of the books I'm looking at, is that if you do want to buy the audio version at retail, most of the time it would end up being cheaper if you bought the kindle version first and then paid the reduced audio price. Sometimes cheaper by almost $10. Strange.

If you're really unhappy, shoot Audible an e-mail and they'll refund you for that book. I did that once when I had a godawful narrator on something.

I think most people buy Audible books via membership credits, which makes them $11-15/book, regardless. The retail price is really high.

Yeah, the retail price is insane, which is why I only ever even looked at audio books when I was planning a road trip. But this month at work has been slow.... I left early for a few days until my manager lectured me about needing to stay until 5, even if I am twiddling my thumbs. A Coworker listens to audio books all day, so this is the perfect way to keep my self from dying of boredom.

Another fun thing I found out last night - The books you pick up discounted through the sales or kindle deals still qualify for the reduced price audio.

So for example I picked up 'The Lies of Locke Lamora' for $1.99 on sale a few months ago, and then I bought the audio book for $3.99 last night.

The hard part was getting it on my ipod (the internet at the work is too spotty to try and stream anything for long periods of time). I ended up having to use the audible help forums to get it working, but its on there now!

Yeah, but I haven't had much luck getting the books I'm interested in from the library.

You can get thousands of public domain books (like all the ones discussed here) for free at http://www.librivox.org. I've enjoyed dozens of them. Some readers are better than others, but they are generally pretty good. And free. Don't see the public domain book you wanted to listen to? You can help record it and make it available for everyone. Get the free text at http://www.gutenberg.org/

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
