December book club?
« on: November 23, 2012, 06:21:32 PM »
Hey everybody! I'm glad to see that everybody is still reading and voting for books, but we've had some slowing down of the MMM book club discussion. Is it worth keeping around? Do we need to stretch out the schedule to allow more time for our badass activities? Should we change up the format, and have people post reviews like MMM's as their own topics in the same subforum?

retitle to December book club?

I read the November book and just didn't feel like there was much to be discussed. I'd be down an official December book myself, but I've seen a couple people post reviews of other books over the past month so maybe that's the way to go.

I read the choice for November and have to agree that I didn't find much to talk about. Returned it to the library.

Is there a list/poll for December?

Not yet, but if we want to keep things in the same form as previous months we could pick a topic and propose books really fast.

There was a thread a while ago about a guy who lived without money for a while and wrote a book about it. I don't know any more about it besides that the book exists, but I nominate that. If we do book club this month, that is.

Wish I could be participating, but I've been way too busy.  I was thinking if a book lasted for two months, but if one can't read it in 30 days, it probably won't happen in 60 days either.
I am a former teacher who accumulated a bunch of real estate, retired at 29, spent some time traveling the world full time and am now settled with three kids.
If you want to know more about me, this Business Insider profile tells the story pretty well.
I (rarely) blog at AdventuringAlong.com. Check out the Now page to see what I'm up to currently.

I'm might be in for November, depending on the selection.

Regardless, I'd like to see the polls continue as they have given me some good ideas. I've been reading Walden which was on the list for October but wasn't the winner :-(

So what if we do a poll for the December-January book? Let's hear some topic suggestions!

Anybody up for another finance book?

I'm up for another book and agree that the polls have given me some great looking books to add to my wish list

Grant, I like the idea of a Dec/Jan book this time around.  I think with the holidays people might be a little busier than usual.  I do like the idea of a monthly book in general though.

Finance book this month would be fine with me.  I read most of the habit book and while I enjoyed it, I didn't find much that was discussion worthy either.

I'm already reading 4 books at the same time right now, but don't wait on me.

I'd love to participate in the December reading club. I would have participated in the November one, but they didn't have the selected book in my library and I wouldn't be much of a mustachian if I went out and bought the book, now would I? :)

Looking forward to seeing this months choices!

Any topic suggestions other than finance?

how about a good do it yourself (DIY) book?

Don't know if enough of the skills are international (since so many things are different between US and Europe/the rest of the world) for it to be useful for me, but still.

Just a thought.

I'd like to participate with either a finance book or a DIY book.

What sort of DIY book? Do you have an example in mind?

I feel like a DIY book would have to be tailored to the individual. For example, if I was to grab one I'd go for something involving wood or metal working. Other's might want to study how to use an Arduino microcontroller. Others might like knitting. People who want to learn home repair would be at odd with those who plan on renting for the foreseeable future.

I would love to get a new finance book though. I just started Liar's Poker at the recommendation of my future boss, but it seems to focus on the psychology of day trading and might not interest people who want to learn about more stable buy-and-hold practices.

How about a stock book more focused on Mustachian investing, like MMM's recommended "A Random Walk Down Wall Street" or "The Intelligent Asset Allocator."

Side Note: I would have participated in the November book discussion, but I'm still waiting for my hold at the library. It has said "In Transit" for about 2 weeks now...starting to wonder where it is shipping from :P Like others have said, I love the book club not only because it gets me to read something I may not already know about, but the nominations that don't win have turned into a sort of "To Read" list for me. It's good inspiration.

Maybe the December-January topic could be a loser's bracket of some prior months' runners-up.

If we do this in February, I am looking forward to reading "Pound Foolish" by Helaine Olen, but it won't be released until the end of December.  I think there were likely be some antimustachian things in it, but it sounds like it could be interesting.

Well I just picked up a copy of "We, the Drowned" by Carsten Jensen. Not sure if the mustachian book club is interested in a purely fun read, but I thought I'd throw it out there.

I agree with this idea, incorporating the second and third places from all of past polls.  Pretty much any book that got significant votes and you feel like including into a new poll, regardless of category.
