Arnold Schwartzenegger's Total Recall book
« on: January 28, 2013, 06:02:03 PM »
I picked this one up because it sounded interesting enough and it was. You might not think that it fits in the mustachian universe, but it sort of does.

He starts off with his youth and how he became driven to be a body builder to have fun and find a way out of Austria. Then he made it out, landed in Los Angeles and kept pushing himself to new goals. Education, more body building championships, real estate investments, mail-order business etc. He follows that with his marriage, movie stardom etc.

While he doesn't go in to a lot of detail, there are a few chapters where he explains how he wanted to make sure he never had to work again and saved for a rainy day. Work hard, save hard, fewer worries, etc.

While he presents some of his scandals a little more polished than they may have been, he comes across as a clever guy who knew what he wanted and went for it and ensured that his future would be safe.

A pre-mustachian of sorts.

Very enjoyable book, indeed.

Arnold IS a clever guy.  Too many people see Predator, and know that he was a bodybuilder back in the day.  Not many people realize he is a  fucking amazing dude who's lived a pretty incredibly rich life.

It has been a while since I read this book but I remember Schwarzenegger presented many frugal/badass points in this book:

*Having more than a million dollars by the age of 30 he had the freedom to pursue/choose any acting role he liked.
*Mentions how he tried to teach his kids the importance of turning off lights in empty rooms, not wasting resources.
*Invested some money in buying a jet to rent out to airline companies.
*Some badassity memories from his youth like limited hot water, needing to fetch drinking water, family somewhat poor. Determined to break away from it all and make a name for himself.

I'm a big fan of Arnold and it kinda pisses me off when people think he made his way to success just because he took anabolic steroids. So did every other bodybuilder he competed with but you don't see them all making millions of dollars and becoming governors. Schwarzenegger worked his ass off.

I probably watch PUMPING IRON once every couple of months. Arnold's charisma carries that film.

I've always liked the guy - certainly a nice mix of brain and brawn. Though seeing him trying to make a buck in the latest Terminator film makes me a bit sad.

Yeah. Ah-nold was a millionaire before he was a movie star, right? He's a pretty impressive dude. Plus, he was able to be a movie star even though he can barely speak English :)

Arnold was my hero back in the day. I still have 4 prints of him I paid a fortune to have framed in the gym. I think though he lost a lot of his credibility with his livelihood. At the end of the day he did a lot of drugs, cheated to no end and took advantage of a lot of people. But to your point he was self made and very savvy in how he did things. He will always be remembered by me for his success despite his many failures as he could intimidate anyone when he was coming up and was the best with mind games. The battle with him and Lou was historic...

Love the title of your thread! read all his books and saw all his films. Cheezy or not guys like him, sylvestor, Lundgren, Norris had their day for sure!

Lance Armstrong is the same way. Yeah, he doped, but the whole peloton doped and nobody else won two fistfuls of Tours. It wasn't the EPO that won him those titles, it was hard work and great strategy.

That said, fuck Lance Armstrong. He's an asshole, a sociopath, and a horrible litigious scumbag of a human being. That doesn't make him bad at bikes.
