Anyone interested in a 'Designing Your Life' book club?
« on: November 08, 2022, 11:52:33 AM »
I'd love to participate but know enough about myself to know I can't coordinate it. Anyone want to start this?

Yes!

I was thinking about trying to start an in-person group to work thru this but actually think an MMM group would be better.
Maybe 5-6 people.

Hope some others are interested.

I would be in. I got about 15% of the way through myself and then got distracted by life so a group would be a good incentive for me to finish the thing and get it off my TBR pile.

@MoseyingAlong are you willing to lead us or at least get us started?  I hope so.

I'm excited!!

When are you thinking you'd want to start? Super-soon? Beginning of the new year?

I'm very interested, but can't reasonably squeeze it in until mid-December at the earliest. That said, if you're still looking for someone to raise their hand to lead the group, I'd be happy to (if we can delay a bit).

I'm very interested.

@Ladychips, any idea of how to organize and run? I'm willing to help make it all happen. Like @Miss Piggy, I have more time after the new year. It would be nice to have something to anticipate during the dark months.

What about a regular Zoom meeting, maybe monthly or every two weeks?
And/or a dedicated journal to share our ideas?

When I did a Mastermind group years ago, we did a monthly call to discuss a chapter but also were paired up with someone else to check in more regularly. Not saying that's the way to do, just one way.

Re timing. I'm happy to start whenever, now or later in December or January.

So excited to do this. I bought the book a year ago!

@Sailor Sam - I don't know what the best way is. I personally would prefer more often rather than less (at once a month, we are looking at almost a year to get thru the book). But I guess there are lots of exercises so maybe that's not necessarily a bad plan. The partner idea sounds good depending on the size of our group. I'm also good with zoom.  I think I'd be up for whatever as long as we do it.  While I'd like to start RIGHT NOW, it makes more sense to me to start in the new year.

@MoseyingAlong , why don't you draft up a plan and get us rolling? Sounds like Miss Piggy would help.  And @Miss Piggy , buy the book right now!

So excited!!

There are 11 chapters. So it would take about a year if we did one chapter per month.
I think that's too long.

Would people prefer 2 chapters at once or more frequent discussions?
Or do you even want that much structure? How about a free flowing discussion in a journal thread?

@Miss Piggy Since you offered to lead, do you have a vision or experience?

Sorry for the delay...yes, sort of. I have a ton of experience facilitating highly interactive corporate learning workshops. Zero experience with book clubs. I did an online search for book club materials for this particular book and didn't find much quality stuff. Then again, I spent less than 5 minutes on the task. I do plan to look again. And there's always the option to create our own materials/discussion questions/activities. :)

Popping in to say I'm still interested, and that I think just a commitment and a plan to start with is all we need. We can adjust as we go. So @MoseyingAlong and @Miss Piggy let us know what you decide!  Can't wait!

Hi gang,

I am interested as well. I have never participated in a book club of any sort. I tend to read quickly, then move on to the next thing. It would be a good practice for me to slow down and digest the content!

I am on Mountain time though - if everyone is East coast and me joining in would make scheduling tough I will not be offended!

My wife is in the middle of this and I think would be interested in joining.

We are east coast folks.

I'll loop her in when you have a day/time to meet.

Since I am on AEDT (UTC+11), assigned chapters per month & a discussion thread would work best for me.

I picked the book up from the library and read the introduction and chapter one.  I think one chapter a month with a fixed deadline to complete the "try stuff" exercises would be all I could handle at this point in time.

Hey Youuuu Guyyyyyys. I created a Doodle Poll, which people can use to input their availability for meetings.

LINK:
https://doodle.com/meeting/participate/id/dNLq6E8a (corrected)

NOTE:
1. The system has some constraints, which means I couldn’t create broad meeting times like “Sunday afternoon.”  Instead, I created blocks that correlate to Morning, Afternoon, Evening. Using the poll does not mean anyone is voting for a 3 hour meeting.

2. The system made me choose a month, instead of creating a broad category like “3rd Tuesday of each month.” Instead I used Jan, because the month starts on a Sunday.

-  The first week of Jan will correspond to being available “the first (xx)day of the month.”

- The second week of Jan will correspond to “the second (xx)day of the month.”

- EXAMPLE: If you are available every Tuesday and Friday evening, you’d choose the 5-8pm block, on Jan 3rd, 6th, 10th, 13th, 17th, 20th, 24th, 27th.

3. The poll is set to U.S. Eastern Time.

TO FILL IN POLL:
1. Choose which weeks you are available to meet, then choose which days, then choose which blocks.

2. Click on that block of time to make a green check mark appear.

3. I request that the group avoid the “if needed,” and “pending,” options. When organizing things, you’re available, or you ain’t.

Hmm I got presented with a week's worth of options for Feb 6-12 and three times each day, which had already been converted to AEDT so yay for technology.

Thanks for setting this up @Sailor Sam

Haha, does anything like this go smoothly the first time?!?!

Is it supposed to have more than one week of choices? Can I just fill out the first week? Not that I'm lazy or anything...

I designed it so people could say what time in the month they’re avaliable, not just days in the week. So, you are totally free to only respond about the first week of the month, BUT, when I parse that data I’ll tag you as only being free for the first week of each month.

Data roulette, your spin.

looking at the doodle i don t think i will be able to pick a time that works, i am on mountain time and work 8-5, DW works 8-5 and we have two kids that have us busy most other times.

When the group picks a date/time can you post it in the thread so i can try to make it?

I’d love to join a group. I’m up to chapter 4 listening to an audio book copy from the library and was excited to find this timely thread. The combo of library + audio means I’m missing the worksheets.  I was planning to speed-listen to the entire book then perhaps buy my own paper copy to re-read and do the worksheets. I added my 2c to the poll but my schedule is very flexible.

I am keen but cannot make any of those times so I'd be up for a thread discussion. I will ask Santa for a copy for Xmas since the library doesn't have it.

I just started a journal thread for some free form discussion.

https://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/journals/'designing-your-life'-discussion/

I still like the idea of a zoom/group call for those that can make it but am thinking that's going to be more difficult.

Looking forward to hearing/reading people's insights and plans.

Hi all,

I'm interested in participating. I'll head over to the other thread now, but thought I'd pipe up here, too, in case things do proceed here. I'm in the eastern time zone, generally available evenings/weekends (i.e. not FIREd yet, to my great chagrin).
