Child Care Aware MCCYN for DoD Civilians
« on: December 11, 2018, 03:29:40 PM »
For those that are DoD civilians or military and have kids in day care, do yourself a favor and check out the Child Care Aware MCCYN program.

I recently had two kids and just got my application for the program approved.  Our daycare costs will be $33k annually, and this program will cover $20k per year.  It is really an amazing benefit that is not well known in many Civilian circles.  Nobody in my office had ever heard of it.  People that had been paying tens of thousands for years were giving me incredulous looks when I was telling them.  I am elated!

Just a quick bump because of how crazy and unknown of a benefit this is.

This program will offset my childcare costs by $19,800 for 2019.

This is like getting a salary raise of $24,500.  For anybody who is a DoD civilian (850K of us), this is a must-do.

It seems to imply that for the civilian side it's only NGA employees. And what about the Coast Guard?

@Kierun  If you look under military and then on a branch, Army or Navy....you will see that Army Civilians and Navy Civilians are covered.  https://usa.childcareaware.org/fee-assistancerespite/

Coast Guard, I have no idea.

Ah, I see, I was looking in the wrong areas, thanks. Intuitively, I didn't group military families and civilian families together so it didn't occur to me to look under the military side.

Thanks for the info!  I had never heard of this program.  Did the daycare provider you wanted to use meet the criteria?  Do they reimburse you the $20k, or do they pay the provider directly?

@ZMonet  No problem.  It is an absolutely incredible benefit that I can't believe more people haven't heard of.  I had coworkers that were just having kids go into Kindergarten and couldn't believe they had missed out on 10's of thousands of benefits over the last few years while their kids were in daycare.

The daycare provider I wanted to use was not part of the program.  I talked to them about it and they agreed to apply. It took about 6 weeks for them to get approved.  If they are licensed by the state and accredited at one of the national daycare agencies, then they should be approved.

Childcare aware pays a monthly percentage directly to the provider, then I pay whatever is left.
