congrats usmarine!

We had our 6th (a beautiful girl!) back on the 26th.  She sleeps better when the other 5 kids are running around the house screaming.  I think it somehow lulls her to sleep.

You know the interesting thing is our 2nd delivery was not really Drama filled.  It went so smoothly and quickly.  It's really kinda hard to believe it happened the way it did.  I don't think I would change a thing about it.  Yesterday we took our 2nd blessing for her first trip in a vehicle.  Being born at home has the benefit of no car seat in the first couple of days.  She fussed a little but did well throughout.  It's hard to believe I am now responsible for 2 small but so very awesome human beings.

Wow!

I'm sure you did great but I am hoping my husband gets me to the hospital in time.  28 weeks
now and due mid-January.  Baby almost never stops kicking - seems to be a live wire like DH :)

I think we will evaluate #1 before even thinking about #2....I hope being a parent is more fun than being pregnant though; heartburn, sickness and not being able to do up shoes sort of takes away from the wonder of feeling the baby kicking on in there.

My wife is due January.

We're not getting along very well right now.

The secret to successful pregnancies is working late at the office.  You hear that you're supposed to help your wife/partner.  It's rubbish, pregnant women are crazy and prone to picking fights. :)

Working late is NOT a secret to success, especially if you have another child.

Cooking dinner, doing the chores, rubbing her feet - that is.

Are you really saying that in a thread full of pregnant women?

If you're right, we'll murder you and eat the pieces. If you're wrong, we'll feel extremely offended and cry ourselves to sleep. Neither is a good option, so I'd just have kept my mouth shut. :)

Pregnant with #4, due mid-Feb 2015.

We used cloth with the first two, then lent our covers to someone and got them back wrecked, so when #3 rolled around we went disposable.  He was supposed to have been the last.  ahem.  Which would have made the investment stack up less.

This time I'm going to try cloth again, and have managed to pick up some lightly used ones from an online auction site for a very reasonable price.

Even when using cloth, though, I really use a mix of disposable and cloth - once they get beyond about 6 weeks, I use disposables at night as it seems to keep them dryer, and if we're out of the house all day, or away for the weekend or something then disposables are great.  Also, if someone is babysitting, they get to choose which to use.

I prefer flats or prefolds with covers, but the system we've bought are pocket style.  I'm thinking I'll just use them the same as a normal cover, without tucking the lining into the pocket, but I'll try it a few different ways to see what works.  The great thing about it is that we'll be changing so many, that there's always ample opportunity for fine tuning :)

pregnant with #2..... due May 6.

not exactly happy.  hopefully i'll get there.  those of you who might remember me from before know I only wanted the 1 kid I have.  major major iud fail and I'm pregnant now.  my boyfriend/partner is very excited.  our 10 yo son and I are still on the fence.

he may cloth diaper.  he'll be staying home with the kid.  so if he feels up to the laundry I will support him in that.  if not, we'll probably do honest company diapers.
I've been horribly sick and puking every day.  Zofran helps.  I'm so ready for this all day sickness to end

internet hugs for you, ace1224.  This baby was unplanned too, and I spent the first 3 days basically just saying "shit"  and "fuck" as I walked around the house.

It was a gradual process to go from "oh crap", to "well, I'm sure it will be fine, I just need to put a bunch of contingencies in place, and I'm sure I'll like the baby once it's here", to just this last week (23 weeks in) I had a really vivid memory/dream of holding a sleepy baby and having warm, softy baby cuddles, and I finally do want this baby.  (although, I'm still annoyed about the discomfort and fatigue and the fact that just *sitting still* is uncomfortable and requires effort).

Hope it all goes well for you and that you're able to get your head around it over the next few months.

I'm pregnant with #1, due May 3rd.

I have felt like absolute hell the past couple months. I was not really prepared for how much pregnancy just plain sucks ass. The nausea is horrible, but the worst for me is just the complete, constant, bone-tired, pass-out-at-any-moment exhaustion.

The massive amount of "must have" baby items is mind boggling. We'll hopefully just be starting with a cloth diaper stash, car seat, baby carrier, travel bassinet and some clothes and see what we need from there. I have worked too hard to declutter over the past couple years to let my house fill to the brim with unnecessary baby crap!

True, I thought I was being funny.

I remain an extremely involved and active father with all of our children and was super helpful during pregnancies.

Though there is a nugget of truth in there, pregnant women are crazy. :)

Yeah, this last pregnancy was pretty rough for my wife as well.  It sounds like you're about perfect on baby stuff at this point, though.  Babies don't need much :)

Well, it was a tiny bit funny in the way things are funny when you hope to murder people saying them... If DH even thought of staying late at the office, I'd probably either cry a lot or fight a lot. Right now we're doing pretty well and I only burst once from hormone induced rage, and cried twice from the way he said something.

I agree we get a little crazy, but that information must only be used for good, not for evil.

Oh, ace! Lots of hugs to you. I remember your story, and actually, it was an eye opener for me. It led me to really talk with my SO about children and assess his feelings on the matter, because I knew I always wanted to be a mom, but felt maybe he was just on the scripted path. It also helped me look deeper in me about the child-wants, and research a lot about post-partum coping mechanisms to change and bonding and relating to the kid. I don't do well with babies, so basically what I like about kids is the family we get later. If having my own baby turns out too draining, I'm now considering adopting older kids, etc. Really, you helped me grow a lot.

I'm sure you'll also love this kid like you do love your first, but I hope it's easier for you this time. Thankfully your partner can take on the bulk of childcaring. Wish you the best!

We had our daughter on 10/29. It was a blessedly short labor (2 hrs 15 mins) and now we're in those early days of no sleep and re-remembering newborn infant care (this is #2 for us). :)

As a breastfeeding "PSA" I wanted to share, by way of encouragement, that the early days of breastfeeding can be *very* painful. I know people say that breastfeeding shouldn't hurt - and that is certainly true once you and infant have figured things out, but until that point it can be very very challenging/painful, to the point of making a mama want to quit altogether. My daughter's latch is good - better than my son's was - and it still hurts like a bitch, to the point that I have cried and cursed during breastfeeding more than I did at any moment of my labor. Not sure if this is true, but the home nurse mentioned that I may feel more pain / be more sensitive because I am fair-skinned and the nurse thought there was a correlation.

At any rate, for any new mamas who are giving breastfeeding a go and are frustrated or in pain, certainly seek out help/resources (kellymom.com is a good site), but also know that even if you're doing everything right, there still may be an initial period where breastfeeding just hurts. The good news is that it gets better. :)

Do you freckle? If you carry the MC1R gene (linked to red hair and freckling) your pain perception is all kinds of messed up in interesting/exciting ways. (It runs in my family.)

Yes, I do freckle though am not a redhead. Interesting about the gene (I'm off to do some googling...). Seems weird that I could handle labor pain (both were unmedicated) but it is breastfeeding that has nearly brought me to my knees!

Congrats, course11!

You are completely right about the pain in the early days of breastfeeding.  I expected it with my first because I'd seen my mom breastfeed my 6 younger siblings, and it was obviously painful.  My son sucked so hard he gave me little blisters on my nipples in the first couple of weeks.  Only the first few minutes of each nursing session were painful, though - is it hurting the whole time for you?  Either way, I hope it gets better soon!

I have 15 days till my due date; 8 more shifts before I go on maternity leave.  I can't wait.  I'm nesting so freaking hard, it's almost comical.  But everything is washed and packed and ready to go.  I'm going to install the car seat before work tonight, and I'm slowly building up a freezer stash of post-birth meals.

Hard to believe our daughter is now 5 weeks old.  She is doing well.  No issues with sleeping average of 1 wake up per night.  Her first night she slept through the night.  She eats like a champ and has been growing as one as well.  Full head of hair from birth.  Big brother has adjusted well.  He was crazy spoiled the first week or so from Grandparents.  He calls his sister "That" and want's to climb in her swing and her seat.

Mamma is doing well she isn't liking the no milk or ice cream phase.  Josie seems to have the same dairy issues her brother does.  Ugh.  Just an update.

I'm jealous.  My child is almost one and I'm celebrating it as a victory if she only wakes up once per night.

Thought I would comment so I can follow this thread. I am 29 weeks now with our first child (a boy!). Congrats to all the parents-to-be and recent & veteran parents. My pregnancy has been fortunately smooth (no major symptoms from the beginning). I am now getting more tired and having a hard time with getting through the work day, productively anyway. Trying to take multiple breaks and should try to go for walks, but don't have the energy to do that either. Hoping the next 10 weeks go smoothly as well! My partner has been super super supportive and helpful, I get breakfast made every morning and he doesn't complain when I don't have the energy to help out with dinner or other chores/errands. I have been grateful for that! Good luck to everyone!

My wife is 31 weeks pregnant. All is well except that she broke her foot in two places and is now in a cast.

No more cycling for me for a while, I have to drive her to work.

On a mustachian note, we have now spent a grand total of *maybe* $15 on our new baby girl, outside of diapers (we do disposable).  Between the hand-me-downs from our 8-year-old, and plenty of gifts from doting grandparents and aunts, our baby girls hasn't cost us much besides a whole lot of sleep.

Same pack'n'play for sleeping, same car seat as the older kids, same burp cloths and swaddling blankets, same stroller.

Congrats to MsFrugalista and skunkfunk!

zolotiyeruki, that's impressive.  Way to go!

I'm 39 weeks and 2 days.  Or 4 days, depending on who you talk to.  Getting quite impatient, although I can't complain too much - grossly swollen ankles & feet are my biggest problem.  Saw the midwife this morning and am 1cm dilated, though not all the way effaced.  She tried to sweep my membranes but couldn't get in all the way to do it properly, so just "stirred things up" as much as possible.  It hurt like hell, so hopefully it did something.  I go back a week from tomorrow for another sweep and a NST, then wait another weekend, and if nothing, they'll induce that Monday or Tuesday (the 24th/25th).  So there is a light at the end of the tunnel, and it's less than 2 weeks away.  Hopefully sooner.  Like tomorrow.  Tomorrow would be great.

Excellent! Glad to hear babies don't have to be terribly expensive.
This is our first and we really don't know what to expect in terms of budgeting for the baby. We aren't too pressed about it either, I'm sure we will figure it out in time. We have completed most (if not all) baby shopping: car seat + stroller, bassinet, bouncer, cloth diaper stash, newborn/infant clothes, swaddling blankets, baby carrier - for a grand total of $250. This was all thanks to Craigstlist, local consignment sales, and Freecycle. We don't live near family, so we will not be receiving any gifts and such, which we are completely content with. I'm hoping to breastfeed and will also receive a breast pump through my employer's health insurance at no additional cost to me. The only costs we anticipate the first few months after the baby comes are health/doctor visits (currently on a high deductible plan, deciding what to do when baby arrives) and formula (if breastfeeding isn't successful or feasible for some reason).

Sounds like you're on the right track, really--babies don't need a whole lot other than clean diapers, good food, warm clothes, and plenty of sleep.

Congratz to everyone who is expecting or just had their little one. My boy is now 3 months old, and we have cloth diapered for almost the entire time. (Exceptions being when we brought him home, and when we moved halfway across the country at 3 weeks old.) we use terry square nappies, as theyre easy to use, and I do one small load of washing each day. Use liners and flush them for the mustard.
I'm interested in using elimination communication with my boy, does anyone have good advice regarding this?

Agreed with comments that a baby doesn't need much, currently his favourite "toy"is the bathroom mirror!

Pregnancy was uncomfortable (agree with heartburn comments!!!) I ended up spending the last few weeks discovering MMM while whaling on the couch. Anyway I had a bad birth experience, and while I want one more baby, I'm terrified of going through something similar, will time help with that?

Serpentstooth, I'll commiserate with you. 9 weeks pregnant, and I'm constantly nauseated. Hopefully going to get some zofran tomorrow, my night shifts are killing me and I'm getting dehydrated. Oh and those nasty things I see daily at work, just about make me puke all over my patients(not good). Due last week of June/1st week of July, and hoping this nasty nausea only lasts the first trimester.

My wife is 32? weeks along, and insists she'll never do this again. Carpal tunnel, nausea, cramps all presented first trimester. We had a good 4-week period during the second but it's all back and then some. She wants to get "fixed" as soon as it is over before she can forget how horrible it was.

I feel ghastly. 8w; due April 20. Come commiserate with me. =D

I'm also miserable and have not stopped eating out since 5 weeks due to the extreme morning sickness. I can't stand the smell of cooking or leftovers. Here's hoping this terrible feeling ends soon. Almost 11 weeks now.

Hi FlyingKea,

I've got three kids and we used a lazy form of elimination communication with the third (cloth diapers with all three). By the time she was four months old we started regularly putting her on a little potty, especially when she started grunting and had "that look" on her face. She started doing her business in there and by 6 or 7 months of age we caught most of the poops in the potty, greatly easing the rest of our work with diapers. I used cloth diapers that were easy to take off and put back on, and never really tried going diaper-free or catching the pees (although that worked out pretty often, too). We were very laid back about it all, but she definitely preferred the potty and would tell us when she needed it. She was dry all day by age 2 and all night by 2.5, all completely no stress for her or us. I recommend it highly!

Congratulations, tofuchampion! What a lovely picture - she's adorable.

I'm a bit late checking back in, but my little girl was born on 11th. We only just made it to the hospital in time as I was only in active labour for 24 mins! I had heard second babies can be quick but I wasn't expecting that... Anyway, all went well and she's amazing. All those months of sickness were totally worth it.

All the best to everyone else with little ones on the way!

Congrats, Frida!  Wow, 24 minutes - and I thought my 7-hr labor was fast!

Personally, I break out the disposables when diarrhea hits. No need to be a martyr!

Omg I'm dying. That's hilarious!
