Where do you get your kids bikes?
« on: August 01, 2017, 06:38:15 AM »
Our 4 year old son seems to have outgrown his 12" starter bike and I'm in the market for a 14-16" bike, we're looking on craigslist, but are there other MMM approved sources for purchasing kids' bikes?

I have bought bikes at garage sales, Goodwill, Play It Again Sports and thrift stores. Another idea is the nextdoor app. It seems people are always selling kids bikes.

Nextdoor
Thrift stores
We've been fortunate to get a few for free; and DW has bought a few for $5-10 each from the thrift store. even if it's not fully operable, I take it and piece together a working bike.

Decent 16" bikes do turn up at Goodwill. I also got one from Craigslist. Unless your 4 year old is giant, chances are that some 16" bikes will be too big and some will work, so make sure he's with you.

We also just got 2 refurbished bikes from our local bike coop. We are a low-income family and our coop gives away age-appropriate bikes, fixed up by volunteers, to kids from self-defined low-income families who attend a bike rodeo. Awesome program!

I've just upgrade my kids 12 inch and 16 inch bikes to 16 inch and 20 inch models.

I ended up buying both bikes from the Facebook market place.

I also sold the 12 in bike on the Facebook market place. Between buying and selling it'll be costing me just $15 per bike to move up a size.

Where are you located? Swing by my garage. It seems to be a magnet for people to dump their kids bikes.
