What to do about daycare?
« on: June 03, 2020, 07:28:01 PM »
Hello all!
Two full time workers working at the same place, one toddler.  Recently our household income was cut in half as commission was taken away due to the poor state of the company.  Our boss is trying to help us all cut expenses and says he is going to be lenient about work from home schedules.  One of my coworkers will be alternating days off with her husband in order to save on childcare and my boss says we could do the same.

Unfortunately it is almost impossible to work from home solo and give 100% while working.  It's manageable when there are two of us at home because one of us can occupy him if a client calls but I can't imagine trying to do it solo.  Since there are no commissions, part of me wants to be okay with giving 75% for a few months but I know it's not like me.

Therefore we are talking about either doing 3 days of daycare and 2 at home or vice versa.  Daycare is $49 a day.

Pros:
-My son gets some structure and attention in his day instead of having us continuously sitting him in front of the tv
-We get work done and get to be done and enjoy our evenings instead of working into the night
-Get face time with the boss

Cons:
-The cost
-Covid risk sending him back to daycare

So which one do we do:
1. Suck it up and alternate days
2. Send him to daycare 3 days a week
3. Send him to daycare 2 days a week

What do we do?

Send him to daycare 1x per week.

You each only give 80% effort to work, work 10 hour days 3x a week, and a bit of email checking on the 2 days you work from home.  Plan the 3 days at work around your normal meeting schedule, and have no meetings needed (or easy to call in and remain muted) on your days at home when you won't be paying much attention.

They cut your pay.  They can do that.   This is what I would do to get buy.  You have a toddler for goodness sake.
