Training my teen in the ways of excel :)
« on: November 20, 2014, 06:30:23 PM »
So my 16 year old daughter just got her first paycheck from her first real job! She landed an awesome gig for $8 per hour and 12 hours a week right after school at the library shelving books! She's awesome!! Anyway, she got her first paycheck today and is so excited to start her own budget spreadsheet! She has peaked over my shoulder and seen my fancy colorful custom budget for years and always wanted to play with it, so she is delighted to have her own now! She doesn't have any bills, but she pays for half of her guitar lessons and some of her snack money for school, and now money for movies with her friends will be on her (she picked $20 per month). She budgeted for an electric guitar she has her eye on ($10 per week until May 2015), she budget for saving for college books/education, and then she budgeted all of the rest, $120 per month, towards RETIREMENT!!!! (Almost brought a tear to my eye... Snif :`) so her paycheck is about $85 per week and she has $60 going to savings :)
I feel I have effectively started the journey of passing the torch!
I am bragging..... But I'm just so proud!!!

my son has just turned 18 and got his first job part time. he has 400 in savings and is waiting until he has 500 so that he has more option in which investment fund to put his money. He's currently trying to work out how much he needs to retire at 28....

its a good feeling to have when they get figuring that shit out...

retired?

That's great.  My kids are too young to have "official" jobs, but I can recall my min wage first paychecks that I loved.  Missed many a friday night football game to earn $3.35/hr.

Show her this site....and, rock on.

nynxt!

What a great idea! My 16 y.o. son just got his first pay check from his first job last week. It was all deposited into his bank account but I really never thought of helping him design a spreadsheet for his money plans! Brilliant! Thank you!

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
