Things I've googled in the first 10 days of having a baby
« on: July 02, 2015, 01:35:15 AM »
When it comes to babies, every day is a school day for me. I've just checked the past few days search and by heck I knew nothing only a few days ago. Thankfully we've had the wonderful NHS midwives visit us many times over the past while and their knowledge combined with that of our parents has been a great help.

How to Burp your baby
When to use a pacifier
Overfeeding in babies
Vaseline or Sudocrem
Baby not pooping
Newborn Constipation Relief
Baby pooping too much (After above)
Getting baby into sleeping routines
how to wind your baby
how to change a nappy
Setting up bank account for baby
Investing accounts for children
Teaching baby a second language
Sterilisation of bottles

Teaching your baby a second language

Uh shouldn't your priority be teaching your baby to speak in his/her first language?

Have a really really dumb question to ask. Don't laugh please.

If babies drink only milk, why do they poop?

There are no dumb questions. Babies can't fully digest the milk = poop

I guess there's no word other than 'poop' for it, but a newborn baby's poop is soft and yellowish/tan, sort of like soft-serve ice cream.  It only gets brown and firm later when they start eating solid food.

It's part of God's continuing punishment foisted upon parents for their sin of fornication.

Then my husband and I were really, really bad people.....and prune juice only causes the poop to travel with greater velocity.

This thread is bringing back memories of our first child.  Let's just say that opening the birth to three book we received at the baby shower was a multi-day occurrence during the first month.  For example, it took both my husband and I to figure out how to change kid #1's diaper in the hospital.  By kid #2, I could do it one handed while preventing kid #1 from destroying the room.

Babies are made to survive new parents.

I wouldn't google too much- the internet is designed to terrify you.  You'll figure it all out!

(I'm pregnant with my first- so I am sure to ignore this advice in 7 months...  But I recently really impressed a room of parents when I swaddled a baby one handed while using the other hand to talk hold the phone I was talking on.  Apparently that's "advanced parenting". I call it "low level day-caring".  I have no doubt the daycare experience will fail me though when I have the baby 24 hours a day.  I just got the things like diaper changes and bottle feeding down.  If diaper changes are new to you- you will be shocked at how babies manage to cover their entire bodies with poop after a blow-out. It is especially fun when it happens just minutes after you put them in a fresh diaper.)

Poop, even in adults, is mostly not parts of the actual solid stuff you ate coming out. It's mostly water (about 3/4 water), about 10% bacteria cells, 10% fibers, and some fats and proteins.

Babies are only missing the 10% fibers until they get solid food. The bacteria composition will change when they start eating other foods, because different bacteria like different kinds of food.

<snort> I love this series of searches. So, so true.

The easiest way to get your baby to speak 2 languages is to have one parent speak one language to the baby and the other parent speak the 2nd language. Then when your baby starts speaking, they can do both. It's like a 2 for 1 deal.

Also if your child starts talking in both languages at the same time, make sure you correct them and let them know how it should all be said seperately in each language. My mum is a teacher for 4 & 5 year olds (reception class in the UK) She once had a girl with French parents who lived in the UK. She could speak French and English, but mixed them together in sentences. Her parents had never corrected her as they could understand her so just answered her. They did the one parent speak french and one parent speak English method x

It is

A number of people I know begin signing (ASL) with their child in infancy, as basic signs are often an easier way for children to communicate than verbal language. For children, this can often be a way to engage with parents and express their needs before they can talk. So, that could be the second (or third, if we're counting "speaking baby") language.

I speak 2 languages from infancy, so I pay close attention to research done on the subject.  Here are a couple facts i think are significant:
If a small child hears the other language, they are able to pick up the sounds of that other language and are able to not have an accent when speaking of later on.
If they learn both languages at the same time their vocabulary tends to be more limited than if they were to learn the second language a little later.  This one seems to be true for me, as well as my brother (who had the 2nd scenario).

I would highly recommend teaching baby sign language to your child.  There are great benefits to it.  First, your child will be able to communicate with you earlier (e.g. asking for milk, telling you they are "all done" with a meal or toy rather than getting frustrated and slam things around, etc.).  Second, at least in my experience, their vocabulary explodes early on since they are more engaged in communication.  Also, I believe it helps with motor coordination since they are articulating with their hands.  Some folks used to worry about delayed speech and development, since it feels like you are teaching your child to be deaf/dumb, but it really doesn't work that way.  Since you are making the sign every time you speak the word to them, they get both sets of input.

I know you mean well, but this is not good advice for language acquisition. DO NOT correct them. Model the appropriate sentence back but don't go all pedantic on them. That is the quickest way to kill the minority language. Language mixing is really a non-worry since each language has its own internal logic. They'll stop mixing by 6 or 7 and it's worth it to have a fully bilingual child.  Their nursery school teacher having a bit of difficulty understaning them is a blip in the long term.

Most people teach baby sign, or if they are more advanced, signed English.
ASL has a totally different syntax than English- and babies usually just sign a word at a time, often modified from actual ASL signs.

Babies (and toddlers!) who are able to sign are wonderful!  The communication is so much easier, which helps their frustration levels.

ahahaha I love this! I'm sure my google history over the last few months is ridiculous. Let me see...

some gems:
"baby grabbing pinching breast while nursing" (solution: hold baby's hands with your free hand, keep their nails trimmed)
"green baby poop after introducing solids" (normal!)
"whiteheads on baby's bottom" (normal!
"how long does postpartum hair loss last" (answer: at least 7 1/2 months, and counting...)

It just gets more interesting, as you can see.

Good advice!  This has largely been my approach (my wife has done the googling) with our 3 month old.  I went down a few early rabbit holes (ie: toxins in baby furniture), but I'm trying to stay ignorant of "developmental milestones".

For us, it got easier after the first few weeks.  Our baby sleeps pretty well, which helps.  Our biggest challenge has been weight gain.  We really wanted to exclusively breast feed, but our daughter was just at her birth weight at the 1 month check in, so the pediatrician had us start supplementing.  My wife also upped the # of feedings.  It was pretty grueling, but we've found a nice balance -- 2 oz of formula per day AND we can let her sleep as much as possible overnight.  Waking her up to feed her felt really counterintuitive.

Ha I've Googled many of these same things. A few more to add to the list:

Bloody discharge in diaper (totally normal for baby girls)
Milk oversupply
Baby bad breath
Baby's legs are shaking (also normal)
Tummy time

I will second (or third) the sign language idea. Both of our kids used basic sign language when they were infants and it helped a lot. Just a few like More, Finished/Done, Drink, Eat, Please and Thank You.

Fourth'ing the baby sign language idea.  That's only advice I give to new parents: "teach 'em sign language".  We found it reduced the frustration/crying of the baby because it could communicate its needs at a much earlier age before speech.

On the bi-lingual front, we spoke one language exclusively to our kids, and spoke English to each other.  The kids spoke English to grandparents and others.  Our oldest is 5 now, and speaks both languages fluently.   If one of you is a native speaker of another language, speak that language exclusively to the kid.  All the research I've seen indicates that having one parent speak one language; and the other another makes it easier for the children to keep the languages separate when younger.

In your research did you see any recommendation for this to only be for native speakers?

My husband was considering only speaking Spanish to the baby; but he isn't native (so that baby's accent will be horrific...)

++ to this.  Our first had major reduction in frustrations relative to family friends and he has a bigger vocabulary now at age (almost)3.  Working on it with our 9 month old but he isn't taking to the signs quite as quickly...  Still hopeful that it will click and speed up his ability to communicate his wants/needs to us.

Just speak it, regardless of native-speaker status.  I'm not a native speaker of my children's first language (although my wife is).  The only problem I've ran into was lack of some vocabulary, for example trying to explain all the "why" questions.  It has helped me improve my speaking skills and ultimately inspired us to recently move to a country where that language is native.
