Someone talk me out of this purchase
« on: October 05, 2015, 07:08:48 AM »
So.....

Ya'll are internet strangers and..... I'm actually pregnant.

We've had multiple losses, as in we are in the <1% of couples with 3+ unexplained losses (we've had more than 3).  I'm past my point of loss with this pregnancy so it looks like we actually might have a baby!  I have had one other full term pregnancy and I am terrified of showing early this time...  We're not planning on telling anyone other than a couple of select support people until 20 weeks (after the anatomy scan).

While I haven't gained any weight..... I am getting a bulgy tummy and right now it just looks like I gained weight but I know that won't last until 20 weeks- I showed at 16 with the one other full term pregnancy.

In general I buy my clothing (other than undies, socks, bras and some of my shoes) at thrift stores.... and I made due with my only other successful pregnancy until much later and then only bought a couple of "maternity" pieces, but.....  I'm itching to buy a "support" tank top now.....  To help hide this growing belly.....

Someone face punch me..... there is no way it is reasonable to spend money on this http://www.blanqi.com/products/maternity-overbust-high-performance-belly-support-tank-top  right??
There are coupons, and I WAS uncomfortable enough to need a support band once I was 34+ weeks last time.  So the back of my mind keeps saying that if I can get one now..... and use it for MONTHS instead of just a couple months at the end then it isn't that bad....

First off, congrats!

Have you read the reviews to determine if it something that lasts throughout the pregnancy? Sometimes they can say that but you become too big for it anyway. I grew out of some maternity pants at the end.

What kind of maternity pants did you wear last time? I would suggest the ones that provide fuller coverage - not the ones that cut you off in the middle. I had a bunch of dress pants from Motherhood Maternity that functioned similarly to the expensive tank top you linked to. They made me feel snugly comfortable. I'm trying to find a picture but am having problems. I wouldn't pay for something like this, since you don't really need the coverage on your breasts, do you?

The reviews I have found all state it lasted through pregnancy with multiple people saying they used one through 2 or more pregnancies.  There is an under bust style.  I was thinking the tank style would be more versatile.

The two pairs of maternity pants I had last time were over the belly but not snug- the over the belly bit just helped keep them up and I only used them once in the 3rd tri.  So I didn't even think about trying to get snugger stuff for earlier.....  a good thought.   I've also thought about just getting a pair of high waisted spanks type shorts and using them as long as they are comfy.....   I am happy we're going into cooler weather so layering is totally normal....

A long tank is really great. I bought one a target (http://www.target.com/p/bematernity-by-ingrid-isabel-seamless-ruched-tank/-/A-13742244) and pretty much wore it every day.

But if you're looking for support, that wouldn't do it.

In my opinion, after what you've been through - you get to buy any maternity clothes you want. Congrats and blessings to you.

Congrats on the pregnancy, hoping it's a happy and healthy one!

Other moms have told me that they've been able to get second-hand mat clothes in great condition for very little money, because they're typically worn by the original owner for a short time, then have no use to her once childbearing is over.  Perhaps check for a second-hand one online before shelling out for a new one?

I scanned some of your recent posts and noticed you mention your income is commission-based. If looking/being pregnant could hurt your sales/income (so not fair, but sometimes it's reality), by all means, buy the top and try to hide it for as long as possible.

Thanks!  No, my job won't be affected by my pregnancy unless I have to drop shifts due to medical reasons.  So we're in luck there :)  It is much more that I want to avoid having everyone I see around my town / at my son's school know.  If things don't end well I really don't want to have to deal with telling everyone its over.

As a fellow mom who has struggled with pregnancy losses and hid my own successful pregnancy for as long as possible, buy it.  Not sure if it will do what you want it to do but I say you go for it!  It will give you peace of mind to make the purchase.  Also consider lots of layers.  Now that it is fall you can get away with button down shirts and sweaters and bulkier items to hide that bump!

Congrats on your pregnancy! I'm also a loss mom (5 early losses, currently 34 weeks with a healthy boy). I don't have experience with the product you mention but just want to give my best wishes that you have an easy and healthy pregnancy!

For what it's worth I found that chunky scarfs and necklaces helped draw the eye up away from my belly.

So, somebody is going to face punch me for saying this I'm sure but ... to me, mustachianism is substantially more about spending your money intentionally rather than simply abstaining from spending money.  For example, MMM talks about the value of having good tools to accomplish his carpentry projects.

To me, this just seems like a good tool to accomplish your ... baby project.  : )  And not at all worth agonizing over.  Order it and if it looks like you won't get much use out of it once you see it in person, well then ... make sure they have a good return policy!

Huh.  Never heard of such a thing.

I will say that my belly got significantly larger with kid 2.  Lolol to anything fitting the whole pregnancy.  I was out at Target buying the next size up of everything by ~34 weeks.  I would just caution you to plan for it to be outgrown, and if it isn't, then its a pleasant surprise!

This blogger seems to love it, and I actually considered it until I was loaned two really supportive Bellybands. Given the story and the need for support, it seems to be one of the very best products out there. I wouldn't stress about it.

If I had to purchase something, I would go with the Blanqui. It's also functional for a nursing tank too.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
