Pottery Barn Kids' Halloween Costumes
« on: October 14, 2015, 10:16:09 AM »
I wasn't sure if this belonged here or on the "Antimustachian Wall of Shame and Comedy". I knew that Pottery Barn was ridiculous, but I had no idea how ludicrous it was until I saw this:

I almost choked. $70 for some tulle? That's probably $5 worth of tulle from the fabric store. It's not like it's even an elaborately made costume. With that mark up, I think it's time to open up my own Etsy shop...

It is super cute though. Not that I'd pay $70 for it.

From ages 2-7, all of my kid's costumes came from Goodwill. Then my mom sent her one last year and this year I used a gift card my mom gave me for my birthday and I used it to buy her a costume for this year.

Wow, just wow!  We spend less than that for a weeks worth of groceries.  I was appalled at spending 20 bucks on my daughters costume:)

My daughter bought her three children costumes from Pottery Barn, and the quality was pretty good. The little girl is a Spider Fairy, the oldest boy is some kind of Dinosaur, ...but the youngest boy's Superman costume has the "Ruby" brand tag on it, which apparently is the brand sold by the big-box stores...it does not even have the Pottery Barn label on it...and price was significantly higher than at the big box stores. He had taken it out of the package and loved it--would have been devastated if she sent it back-- so she just ate the experience...but was furious to say the least. You can't leave reviews on Pottery Barn's website, I guess, and Customer Service just gave her a polite brush-off.  Quality did seem OK, even on the Ruby branded Superman outfit,  but these were not the higher-quality, "better" costumes that Pottery Barn seemed to be describing. DD is swamped at work, does not sew, and finds that her kids wear their costumes multiple times...so was trying to access a better product that they could wear longer and more often without the costume falling apart. She's not thrilled, and won't purchase from PB again...but the kids all do love their costumes.

Sigh, the writing is on the wall. Grandma had better get the old sewing machine out next year.

Looks like there's also a "pink tulle treat bag" marked down from $22.50 to $18.00.  What a bargain!

My youngest who loved All Things Pink and Princess from 3 to about 6 was thrilled at the Goodwill treasures I found for her during those years.

LOL. The best one in that collection is the $40.99 mummy costume. I guess, a few rolls of bandages doesn't cut it anymore . . .

However, I'm not going to cast stones here. We have a costume "collection" . . .

I never knew until this year that PBK is not even the worst offender. We somehow got on the list for a catalog called Chasing Fireflies that has costumes that are more than  $100 each. Just ugh.

Holy smokes.

And I was a little annoyed with myself because I wasn't going to buy Little Brother a costume at all (he could have chosen from dinosaur, sheep, or Thomas the Train), but then he was helping me choose one for Big Brother and wanted one for himself, and I let him get a $10 astronaut costume that turned out to be a little smaller than I thought--he can barely squeeze into it. Loves it, though. Oh, well.

I got them both at one of those big semiannual consignment sales--they tend to have decent costume selection. $15 for both (Big Brother's is a cheap Buzz Lightyear outfit, just like a spandex jumpsuit, which he loves).

Well dear Grandma, I am a DD that sews, and I can tell you that the cost of materials can add up REALLY fast!! Even with coupons for JoAnn. I make my kids costumes every year because I enjoy it, but it is certainly not cheaper! Ok- it is cheaper than $70 though!! I've made 2 costumes for my oldest out of boxes now and those were frugal and FUN!!

I guess it depends what it is. My mother made an adolescent-sized poodle skirt one year, and my sister and I took turns with that thing until it literally fell apart. I can't think of anything commercially available that would have been so versatile!

The mustachian thing to do is to buy the popular PBK costumes (princess, fairy, cute infant/toddler costumes) when they are on deep clearance. Sell them next Sept-Oct on ebay for $$$.

Eh.  If they hadn't labelled the costume, I would not have know she was dressed as cotton candy.  Doesn't seem like a very good costume to me if others don't know what it is.  Especially not at that price.
