Non-portable kids MP3 player with ZERO internet connectivity
« on: January 03, 2023, 08:56:10 AM »
Can anyone recommend me an MP3 player my kids can use that doesn't involve stupid proprietary parts (like branded "CDs" made of different animal characters), actually has a navigation screen (not just forward and back buttons with no display to see what you're selecting), JUST plays mp3s (no games, radio, etc), and has ZERO internet connectivity?

I feel like I'm asking for the moon here! I just can't find anything. I want a CD player, basically, but without the physical clutter and inevitable breakages of CDs. I want to download files of my choosing with a USB cable onto the device then be able to just select a track and play it. And NOTHING ELSE. This mainly for audiobooks as my kids drift off to sleep, so it'll be parked in their bedroom so no need for it to be portable (though it could be).

Help!

I have an old Sandisk player, from early days, and was thinking to see if something was still around, or a successor, but it looks like @shelivesthedream found it.

If you are on the Apple side of the world, you could get one of the last iPods.  Of course, there's a service behind it, but you don't have to use it.  Just turn the wifi off.

I have an old Sandisk mp3 player as well.  I had downloaded a bunch of old itunes music to it and now my kids listen to it.

I still have a standard iPod that use daily. I use a Linux management software package instead of iTubes and standard MP3's for music. People give me a hard time, but I prefer the interface, no Internet connectivity and no tie to itunes (which I despise). I have the 160gb version. It's long in the tooth and needs an external USB battery, but it works.

Tie it to a player with and iPod port and you have what you are looking for.

So the thing needs to be non-portable?

You're looking for a 10-15 year old laptop computer with a busted wifi card. Post your request on Craigslist and someone will give you one.

We've bought a couple of these for our kids: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00VXMXU38 - one of our kids bought this one with his own money https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09YL92ZGZ

The first Sandisk player lasted from July 2017 until a month ago and we just bought another replacement for $35. The other one is a generic Chinese brand - one of a dozen or so basically identical MP3 players.

We downloaded a bunch of free audiobooks from https://librivox.org/ - it's free audiobooks in the public domain.

It does have FM radio, our 14-year-old listens to that and found some old songs he liked that he paid me to buy on Amazon ($0.99 to $1.29 each).

I have one of the old Sandisk Sansa Clips, which I've used for running and workouts since 2012. Searching for MP3 player or Digital Audio Player (DAP) will get you some good options at a range of price points but it would be hard to go past the Sandisk for the price point.

Those Sandisks are awesome, but they do have a radio.  DD has my old one, and it still works (although I can't connect it to the computer anymore, so she's kind of stuck with what she's got).

Another option might be an old, SIM-less phone.  We do that -- have it on wifi to download books from the library, and then take it off wifi.

The OP said non-portable, which I don't understand.  Is anything non-portable these days? (half joke)

"no need for it to be portable (though it could be)."
