Mustachian Kid Heads to College
« on: August 14, 2024, 04:23:05 PM »
I'm posting this mainly because I'm sad, but also to brag on my kiddo...

My son left for college a few hours ago. He's going to a state school with a scholarship that picks up all of his tuition. (We are still on the hook for room and board).

He's staying in a traditional dorm with a good friend from H.S.

He's driving my wife's ex grocery-getter (Toyota Highlander). Paid for.

He's know he wanted to be a cop since he was little, so he already has his degree/schedule/classes all figured out (criminal justice).

He plans on becoming an RA which will cover his room and board on top of the scholarship...so after this year, if he gets the RA job, he'll be going for free.

He worked all summer and banked every cent, so he'll have spending and play money.

I'm so incredibly proud of him and so sad to see him go. I know it's what needs to happen and I'd be wayyy worse off if for some reason he couldn't go.

But still, he's only been gone a couple of hours and all I want to do is drag him back and lock him the the basement.

Congrats to you on a job well done! Now you can retire, or anyway switch to providing services on a consulting basis ;-)
And congrats to him, too!

Congrats to you and him!  My DS had his first year in college last year and I shed many tears and spent several nights last year sleeping in his bed.  It is hard!  He came home for the summer and I have so enjoyed the person he is and it is going to be sad all over again when he leaves in a couple weeks.  But knowing he is happy, making great friends, and doing well with his studies affirms that he is in the right place.  Good luck to your son!

What a fantastic post.  Congratulations!

And hey, give it a year or two before you lock him in the basement -- once he gets a little into his major, he can pass the time telling you about all of the laws you're breaking.  ;-)

Congrats on raising a responsible adult! Love that he has such a clear plan. Mine is less responsible than yours, but has worked the last three summers, saving up for college & is excited to leave for school in a few weeks. I'm a little less excited on my own, but very excited for him & the adventures ahead.

I spit out my coffee at this one! :)

Thanks to all the replies. Feeling better. Kid is happy as a clam. Talked to him on Sunday and he was bubbly. Classes were going well, roommate was working out and he has a volleyball court right under his balcony! Miss him a ton but super happy he is were he is!

Congratulations on this milestone. With a couple weeks having gone by, I'm sure you've gone through a roller coaster of emotions.

I currently have 2 out of the house for college. It's been touch in some ways, and great in others.

We've absolutely been up and down emotionally! Things have settled down for us (for the most part). Actually enjoying the empty nest.

The kiddo did have his first "adulting" moment when the car failed to start. I did some basic trouble-shooting with him over the phone and we determined it was probably the alternator. We'd done a BUNCH of work on the car before he'd left, but that was one thing thing that hadn't been touched (my bad..should have thought of it). Normally, I do all car repairs in the family but I didn't want to drive 10 hours for a 1 hour repair. So, I had him call a mobile mechanic. I was a little apprehensive but it all worked out.

My kiddo said the mechanic was "super chill" which is KidSpeak for "A fine upstanding talented and competent individual who performed excellent work."

So, I was got back my weekend and he made a good contact.

(I know...not quite Mustacian. Would have been better if the kid had done the repair himself. Although he knows the basics, he was apprehensive, not have the right tools and not knowing how to tension the belt correctly. Next time!)
