Mustachian parenting strategies for young children
« on: May 10, 2017, 07:21:01 AM »
Hey all! In case it's helpful for anyone else, I wanted to share with you the parenting blogger who is, as odd as it sounds, responsible for my initial forays down the path of Mustachianism before I even knew Mustachianism was a thing. She's Janet Lansbury (her blog is http://www.janetlansbury.com/). Is anyone else in here a Janet fan? I'm a mom of 2 under 4 and glad I found her when my first kid was just a few months old. (Now if only I'd found MMM sooner...)

She's a pretty darn Mustachian early childhood guru if you ask me. Among other things, she posts about things like how your mindful presence is enough for your kids--no need to buy them a ton of shit or bend over backward to entertain them. And she advocates not packing their schedules or schlepping kids around town to entertain them, put them in classes, etc....that the best thing is to have a calm routine at home (and outside as much as possible!) for their early years. Another Mustachian aspect of her guidance for parents centers on what kids really need to be happy: parents who can slow down to the kids' speed, understand how to be respectful to kids (this was something I wanted but wasn't intuitive to me as a new mom), etc.

Anyhow, I thought at least some of you might appreciate knowing about this resource.

I'm a huge Janet Lansbury fan. Her podcast is great too because I think it helps to hear how she says things. I wish I had found her sooner. I only started following her a few months ago, just after my son turned 2.

I also really like the book How to Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk. It has a similar approach to communication.

Mostly a Janet Lansbury fan, although she can sometime come off a bit holier-than-thou (mostly on behavior stuff).

Simplicity Parenting and Free Range Kids are two books that resonate for me.  Both are mostly geared at slightly older ages.

I'm reading "No Bad Kids" right now, and I'll have to check out the blog.  I really like her approach so far.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have an 18 month old. Favorite phrase "No, mine!".

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
