Babies R Us liquidation...
« on: March 28, 2018, 03:19:41 AM »
Anyone checked out the sales yet? I think they have the cash flow to only stay open through May...

I can't say that I'm heartbroken over toys r us as some of my colleagues are. I went to the store maybe once in my childhood as my parents did not shop there so I have no nostalgia. I'm actually impressed with my parents thinking about it now- not going to the king of kid consumerism, lol.

I checked out our local babies r us and they just had everything 10-20% off so far except for baby food and diapers. The car seats were still more expensive than on amazon for some of the brands, so I'll wait awhile before trying it again. May get some breastfeeding supplies too for future bebe (not pregnant now, but hoping for another one in a couple of years).

FWIW, liquidation sales are hardly ever the bargain they should be.

I still have a couple of things on my baby list and I had a look at their website. They're either not available (though annoyingly still listed or just "check in store") or still more expensive than elsewhere even with the discount. Call me back when it's 90% off everything online.

Agree. And the crowds rushing them aren't worth it.

I had a Babies R Us gift card I needed to use up so I went online earlier this week and checked both the Babies R Us and Toys R Us websites. Neither one had any good sale prices. Everything still seemed very expensive (IMO) and I literally could not find anything for my two kids that I cared to spend the gift card money on. I ended up buying a few baby items for a friend of mine who is due with her first baby in July. Even then, I cringed because all the baby clothes were so over priced. I had to use up the gift card, though, so I did.

The BRU near me started its sale weeks ago since they were in the first round of closures before TRU decided to close all stores. I figured there wouldn't be much in the way of bargains, but I was hoping to at least get some bottle nipples 10% off. They were completely gone already! Tons of other stuff there, but no good deals (unsurprising). Honestly, I just felt bad for the employees. They're losing their jobs, and everyone's coming in annoyed that prices aren't lower.

^^ yup. I did end up buying a pair of socks at 20% off that I needed to get anyway due to lack of planning (I've gotten all of my child's clothes through craigslist but folks don't seem to sell socks in my region for whatever reason...) and I was intentional about telling the cashier that I was sorry to see the business close.

She told me (and this was the first day of the liquidation sale) that people had already been rude and demanding to the employees.

I do feel bad that they are losing their jobs. but automation along with the death of retail stores is chugging along and I don't see forces to stop it. Overall I think it will be better for society, but may need to start implementing universal basic income if there literally aren't enough jobs to go around due to this in the future /politicalthoughtoftheday #sorry

Interesting about the liquidation sales not being a good deal as others have mentioned- I guess I don't have any experience with them. I will probably check back in a week or so to see if prices have dropped, but it's just morbidly interesting to me more than anything else. I know MMM would face punch the use of gas for this ; )

update: I went again yesterday, still no good bargains yet. surprisingly it doesn't look as though the store has sold much of its inventory. I thought they only had cash until May? I'll go again in another few weeks. I've got my eyes on a car seat. Right now at 10% off it's still more expensive than on amazon
