I plan to be there right at 3pm if not a few moments earlier to get us a good table. We'll be in the pub not the restaurant so that upstairs using the stairs to the right as you enter the building.
Stasher if you don't want to drive home you can park your car at my house [around 3kms away] and bike over to the pub then crash at my place overnight. We could then to a MTB ride the next day in Victoria. Just say'n... :)
-
Ok... so @Chaplin got Daft Punk in there so extra bonus points
@chaplin @jon_snow pre meet hike sounds great. We could maybe hit Gowland Todd or Mt Work ... heck maybe Mt Wells
@Retire sounds good and thanks for the offer
-

I go to very, very few shows. I think the last two were Dead Can Dance and Front Line Assembly (not together). A Daft Punk show would be something I wouldn't pass up if they were in the area.
So, March 24 for our meetup is an auspicious date. I had picked March 23, 2021 as our target FIRE date, so our meetup will be four years to our first day of FIRE. Of course the date could change, but I like having a firm target to work towards until circumstances call for a new target.

I like numbers that have cool alignment....
A hike on Gowland Todd sounds like a possible fun idea as I just did that Saturday.

Sounds good to me.
So does Daft Punk. :)

Nice! I think I have successfully arranged to be free for the entire day.

Hmm..OK I'm thinking about it..:)

That would be great ExFlyBoy

Let's hope that holds true. I'm almost tempted to kayak over. Or not.
If it were July...I'd love to give it a go...at least to Swartz Bay or some other point in North Saanich. :)
-
With RC and Chaplin getting their exercise in with the bike ride there I may opt to take the opportunity to hit MEC to use a gift certificate I won from Alpine Club of Canada before our meetup. I will meet you guys there ! Stoked to bullshit about life and all things outdoors of course
-
Chaplin I looked on google and you aren't too far from Mt Doug and I could always pick you up or at the very least drop you off after the meetup.
-
I'll make my way to Spinnakers for ~230pm to grab a table. Feel free to come a few minutes earlier than 3pm if you feel like it. So far I have 4 peeps [Stasher, Chaplin, JS and myself] coming so I'll be grabbing seats for that number. If you plan to come and want a seat saved post in this thread before noon today.

I'll be wearing this ^^^ hat in case you can't find me and our table.
-
Got table on indoor patio.
-
Thanks for coming out folks. I didn't realize you would all bring bring laptops to run cFIREsim and printed charts/graphs of your investment performance. I'll have to step up my game next time! ;)
-
What cfireism?! I really missed out. Hope you guys had fun.
I was too busy eating chicken wings and nobody would let me touch their laptops with my greasy fingers so I just spectated. ;)

Let's tentatively book the next Victoria MMM Meet Up for Friday 22 Sept 2017 @ 3pm at Spinnakers. We can always fine tune things between now and then, but at least we have something to shoot for. :)
Nobody can say they didn't have enough notice to make this one! ;)
-
Oh ya calculators and spreadsheets totally :)
Thanks for meeting up guys, catch you in Spring for sure.
-
It was good to see Stasher again as well as meeting RC and Chaplin for the first time.
RC and I got to the pub an hour earlier....a pre-Meetup of sorts....which allowed us to delve pretty deeply into some Baja-talk. Kayak-fishing, tacos, deserted beaches....and these things and more were discussed. He "does Baja" differently than I do...but it is clear we both love it.
Stasher, I regret not wearing one of my own flannel work shirts after seeing you appear wearing your own spectacular red plaid version. And please, can I have some of your energy? :)
Chaplin....for next time I don't think we necessarily have to cross to the other side of Georgia Strait in order to have a beer or two. :)
Sadly, I was limited to two measly pints because I had to drive to catch my ferry after the Meetup. Next time (Sept 22. sounds good!) I will probably stay the night in the area so that I can explore the beer list in greater detail.
And thanks to you all you guys for allowing the lone non-MTB'er to hang out with you for several hours. ;)
And my offer stands...if any of you want to go out and try for some lingcod or salmon...let me know.
-
I tried to make it to this, but got distracted by another pub on the way :( Next time!
-
@JS yes Ling Cod sounds good and then cooked on an open fire I imagine is best. I of course always represent the BC plaid army and represent with my flannel. We can call the fish cook a planning meeting for the Sept meetup. Have a safe trip down south next week and have fun.
-

Ha! Telling us we were your distant 2nd choice isn't selling the idea of meeting up! ;)
-
Fire@45 is talking about coming to Victoria 14/15 April 2017. If there are any local MMMers who want to meet up we can set something up. Just leave a comment.
-
I will see what I can do once I look at my schedule
-
Guys...I'd do my best to be there...but...I'm currently 4000km to the south of you which will make it tough for me to pull off. Drink a few for me. I'll do the same for you. :)

Indeed! And thanks again for the ride.
Since I'm taking the summer off with the boy, I'm sure catching and cooking a lingcod would be a highlight.

So that is this Friday?
I think I can make it work, gotta return some climbing gear to MEC so works out for me.
I could possibly invite one of my friends, he isn't a MMM guy but what he is doing in his life is exactly what we are already doing.
Time and Place determined ?

I don't have a problem with you bringing a buddy along. I am open to venue/times, but my first though is Spinnakers at 4pm. Fire@45 probably can't do any earlier than 4pm, but we could do later.
And yes we are talking about Friday 14 April.
-
and cue the long weekend travel gong show **crash***
Wings aren't on sale after 4 are they ;) hehehe
lol ~ hope it all goes well coming over @FIRE45
-
Just have to say your choice in meetup locations is solid, particularly for happy hour! I get the award for the longest commute at 12 hours round trip. I want someone to better my effort.
Looking forward to the next one!
Maybe someone else from Victoria might actually come to a Victoria MMM Meet Up? It could happen! ;)
-
Thanks again.... I may grow an affection for Spinnakers salt and pepper wings at happy hour FIRE approved pricing.
Great to meet you @Fire45 !!
-
Hopefully, I can make it to the island for the September meetup before my wife and I head out to Mexico for the winter. I'll possibly be briefly on Gabriola sometime in August to check on the construction of our little workshop/house, if all permits are in place in time for an August start. Can't wait to meet the Island gang!
-
Let's make that happen Phil
-
I put the September date on my calendar. I'm planning to be off work that day.
-
I'm digging all the Sept MMM Meet Up enthusiasm. :)
-
Looks like I just missed this.
I'm def on board for any Saturday or Sunday meetups. Also like hiking! MMM hike?
-
My husband and I are currently living in Edmonton but planning a move to Victoria. He commutes out to Victoria for three days every three weeks and September 22nd works for him. I might send him to the meet-up as my proxy!

He can Facetime or Skype you in - although you'll have to take our word for how yummy the beer and food is. ;)

Well, we just closed a deal on a townhouse just off the Gorge not too far from Spinnakers (west of Victoria downtown for non-locals) and I am simultaneously thrilled and terrified. Possession date is August 31/17 so we'll both be out in Victoria for that, until September 10th. For the moment, we're staying in Edmonton while my husband commutes. The new place has a 1 bed suite on the main floor which my husband will use as his commuting home base, but there's an 1100ft2 2bd/2bath suite on the upper level that we'd like to find long term renters for. Any suggestions?
If anyone is around prior to the official MMMmeetup, I'd be delighted to have a chat over drinkies and nibblies. Now, back to my obsessive 'to do' list writing!

Drop me a PM when you are in town. I'm always up for drinks and nibbles. ;)
To find renters just post an ad on Used Victoria. Shouldn't be hard as vacancy rates are low at the moment.
-
Did someone say Wings at Spinnakers !
Just hit us up on a time that works for you. I prefer weekdays for simple meetups as weekends in summer are away adventuring somewhere. As @RC said, you will have zero issues renting in Victoria as there is pretty much nothing good available from anyone with the way the media paints the pictures.

Congrats on the house! The Gorge is a lovely area.
DH managed his family's rental house in Vancouver when it became too problematic for his mom. We also have a house with a suite and when we rented it I just used the BC Residential Tenancy agreement with a couple add ins:
1. A section where the applicants have to agree to let me run a credit check. I found simply asking for this info scared off anyone who already knew their credit was crap. The good thing about high rental rates and low vacancy is that it's easy to rent your unit. However, the tricky part can be finding a tenant who can afford to pay the rent every month. The res ten act makes it time consuming to evict for non-payment and nearly impossible to evict for other troublesome behaviours.
2. A section where I disallow them from moving any extra people into the unit without our consent. See above about low affordability of Victoria rentals.
Read the BC residential tenancy act. It's very tenant friendly. Make sure you know how to evict problem tenants. Have a plan for dealing with rent increases. I believe you can only increase the rent 2%/year. If you end up with a really long term tenant, it won't be long before you're stuck with rents that are well below current market rates.
-
Great suggestions - thanks everyone. We'll certainly PM a few of you in September when we're on the Island.
-
Any interest in an early August meetup?
-
What dates would work for you?
-
I'm game if I am around for sure
-
I will be in Victoria from Aug 10 to mid September. I'm in if it fits with those dates.
-
Interested as well. Available Tues/Thurs evenings, later Friday evenings, and weekends.
-

Currently our next Victoria Mega Meet Up! is scheduled for 22 Sept 2017. I think moving dates is just fine as long as there are a few keen participants for the new dates. :)
-
Mid September is shaping up well, I just want those cheap wings ;)
-

No happy hour specials on the weekend if we are going with a Sat Meet Up. They offer the specials to pack people in between lunch and dinner. Weekends are so busy it's not needed.
-
Browns Social House in Uptown also has half price appetizers (wings) weekdays from 3-6 pm :)
I'm cool for Spinnakers still and can survive one order of wings not on sale if it turns out to be a saturday
-
So looks like we are switching dates from Fri Sept 22nd to Saturday Sept 16th?
Sounds like the 16th works for most?
-
The 16th works for me.
-
Good for meeeee :)
-
Anyone up for a last minute MMMeetup tomorrow, August 17? I'll be in Victoria with Jon Snow from 3-6ish.

Damn. I'm off tomorrow, but I am head to Vancouver to meet a friend for a MTB road trip. Sorry to have missed you MJ. :(

I am off work by then. What's the plan ? MMM hike?
-
We might be in depending on the location/time but if not tomorrow September

Zero plan whatsoever. I can do a ramble.

Would like that but unfortunately for all that is rationale and sane in this world I will not even remotely consider heading up the Malahat on a Friday in summer during construction and holiday season !! LOL
Have a fun day and wish I could make it this weekend to JSI but I have prior commitments Saturday as well.
-
Stasher the MJ meet up is today...Thursday not Friday.
-
Due to the vagaries inherent in the airline industry and the inflexibility of ferry schedules our window to do this is even tighter now - more like between 4 and 6 today...though I sort of need to be on the road flying towards Swartz Bay by 6. The best hope to pull something off here would be to meet at Gowlland-Tod park - its northern location puts us closer to the ferry.
I realize this whole thing was a shot in the dark at best. :)
-
Usually Gowland Tod park hike would be perfect on my end, but I volunteer with Big Brother Big Sisters (creating mini-mustachians! i kid.) & just got called for a last minute 4pm meeting! Raincheque. Cheers

No problem...another time perhaps. :)
Doesn't matter much now because we have EVEN MORE FLIGHT DELAYS. The Meetup "window" would now only be considered adequate on a dollhouse. (unsure if that joke worked)
-
Chuckle. I gets it!
-
Stasher the MJ meet up is today...Thursday not Friday.
I know... I was headed over to JSI originally today but pulled into a VanIsle tourism task force, yes I volunteered for something again. Then I was hoping to go there tomorrow but that didn't work and then this new Victoria plan but wasn't done my meetings today in time... next time I guess

I've started a new Meet Up thread for the next Victoria event on Saturday 16 Sept 2017.
