Title: Twin Cities
Post by: Xtal on July 16, 2012, 06:21:33 AM
I know there's at least one other person here from the Minneapolis/St. Paul area.  Surely there are more!

Let's plan a meetup.  If you're in or near the Twin Cities, say "hi" in this thread, and then let's decide on a date/place to meet up and have a beer or two.

Hi!

What's the most Mustachian bar in town?

Hi!

What's the most Mustachian bar in town?

Good question!  I like the 331 Bar because it's near my house and it has free music with no cover.  But it might be better to find a place where people can chat and it isn't too loud and we're not trying to talk over musicians (which is a bit rude IMO, anyway).  It could be a restaurant, too, or maybe even a park!  Or even... the library....?  Hmmm.......

Merlin's Rest might be a good choice.  They're not especially cheap or anything, but neither are they expensive.  Just a good neighborhood pub.  And it's easy to get to by bus or by car, and it's centrally located on Lake Street, just across the river from St. Paul.

I'm in the twin cities and I'd love to meetup! I've only lived her 5 years and don't know the bar scene really well. I'm thinking we should find a place that has really cheap happy hours.

I work downtown Mpls a few days a week and would be up for a happy hour sometime!

Yay!!! Glad to see a good response in this thread.

I still nominate Merlin's Rest, because it has tables you can push together and, while lively, it's not overpoweringly loud.  I'd like to make sure wherever we meet, we can hear each other speak!

Any other nominations for bars?  Suggest a place, let's get consensus, and then we can pick a date/time.

Sounds good to me! I know this is last minute but there is the Twin Cities Really Really Free Market tomorrow in Powderhorn Park if anyone's interested. I've never been but it's very Mustachian!
Here's the Facebook event with more information:

If you can't make tomorrow's then there is another one on August 5.

Hey, I've been reading MMM from the start and ERE before that, but not very active on the forum.  Glad to see there are some other Mpls people!  Grumpy's NE has a great special on Thursdays called "Wino Vinyl" - if you bring a record to spin, you get a free drink - even good beer, not just the crap!

Never thought of it but look at the very bottom of this thread. There's a button called "notify". I just signed up so I can keep up with new posts. I'm down with grumpy's. I work regular business hours and not far from there. What's everyone else's schedule like?

Where is everyone located?  I am right in between mpls and st Paul.  Northeast is reall easy for me, so is the grand ave neighborhood in st paul.

Uptown is a little out of my way, but I could make it over there.

I'm in south Minneapolis but NE is just one bus ride away. I'm not as familiar with the bars there. Recommendations?

South Mpls has some good happy hours.  Blue Door Pub Longfellow has a good one.  Merlins Rest Does as well.

I'm not terribly familiar with Northeast, I don't venture there often.  I just know its a happening place.

I would be up for meeting, I live near NE Saint Paul but work in Minneapolis.

For bars, I don't really care where so long as they have a decent selection and parking isn't a pain. Also prefer places where I can hear the person next to me. I've heard good things about the Railhouse, but have not been there.

Would be interested in meeting up, please PM me as I might not check this all that often.

Mustachian in Minneapolis here, too. FYI, on the bottom of the thread hit 'notify' and you'll get emailed.

Shall we gather in January, discuss bad-ass plans for the new year, and tip a few back?  I've never been to Merlin's Rest but have been meaning to give it a try.

Having recently moved here, I don't know the area's locales yet.  If someone wants to suggest a time and place for a TC Mustachian meetup, I'll do my best to be there!
Title: Re: Twin Cities
Post by: Cromacster on March 14, 2014, 04:29:00 PM
I'm down for trying to get something together.  I've tried before it nothing has really surfaced.  Do you think using meetup would help make things more successful?
Title: Re: Twin Cities
Post by: MountainMan on March 14, 2014, 06:00:28 PM
Meetup.com would bring in more people from outside this forum, I think.  But I just discovered that there are fees the Organizer pays to keep the Meetup group going.  Cheapest is $144 a year or $12 / month.  If everyone chips in a few dollars at each meeting, I don't imagine that would be too difficult to take care of.

But would Mustachians chip in?  haha I have no idea.

Let's just start with a monthly time and place.  Like every third Saturday in the afternoon or something?

What would be a good place to meet?  I happen to be hard-of-hearing, so I appreciate quieter places so I can understand people easier.   Public libraries can have meeting spaces (perhaps for free), parks (maybe Bring Your Own Food?), bars might be okay if the drinks were cheap enough (but some people might not drink).

What do you think?
Title: Re: Twin Cities
Post by: tariskat on March 14, 2014, 08:32:23 PM
Now that it's nice out, parks are good. There is the Minnehaha dog park, some people met up there but I couldn't go, it probably went well. There are some beautiful spots along the river around there on both sides.
Title: Re: Twin Cities
Post by: windawake on March 14, 2014, 09:32:15 PM
Yeah CroMacster and I went to the Minnehaha dog park with our pups. It was fun! I'm definitely in for a larger scale meetup. I live in Whittier (near Uptown). I'm not too picky as far as location now that I'm back to riding my bike! I do like Merlin's rest or Pat's Tap.

It might be nice to do a first meetup out in a public place and if everyone's up for it we could do something semi-regular (like a monthly or bimonthly potluck).
Title: Re: Twin Cities
Post by: MountainMan on March 15, 2014, 10:09:16 AM
Sounds good to me.  I'll wait for others decide the place as I don't know the area well, yet.

Hey,

I would love to meetup. I am not drinking right now but am open to most everyplace. For a central place may I propose the Railhouse Station Bar and Grill in Minneapolis? I am out of town this week but would be open to meet the following week depending on the time.

Fridays could work for me as well.  Would we want to try to do a regular thing like first friday of the month?

Following that we could schedule a meetup for April 4th.

Don't know if anyone here uses google+ at all, but there is a mustachian group on there.  Would be an easy way to organize events.

A couple of other things that are on my frugal fun calendar for those days:

YMCA Garage Sale -- May 14-17, Merchandise Mart Building at the State Fairgrounds.  This is a huge rummage sale, on the last day they sell things by the grocery bag and by the shopping cart load.  I've gotten some good finds from there, after skimming through all the junque.

Twin Cities Makes Minne Faire http://www.tcmaker.org/blog/2014/04/minne-faire-v-approaches/ (http://www.tcmaker.org/blog/2014/04/minne-faire-v-approaches/)  Free admission.  My husband is planning on exhibiting his Stella Amp kit (http://www.crazybutable.com/projects (http://www.crazybutable.com/projects)) and some other electronics projects.

My husband said it certainly could be output to headphones, but he hasn't had time to experiment and come up with a working headphone output circuit.  The amp is on the quieter side even with a speaker; he designed and tested it late at night while we were living in an apartment.  I should add that it will probably be into May or so before he has kits in stock again.

May 17th works for me.  Later in the afternoon would be better, 3ish or so.  but I can try to make it to whatever time works best for others.

I'm up for a park somewhere.  Do we want to try and grill/picnic sort of thing?  I'm not to familiar with the parks in Minneapolis, other than a vague idea of whats available around calhoun/harriet.

Cool! Depending on the timing I may be able to say hi as well. Any of the parks around the chain of lakes will be pretty busy on a weekend (if it is nice out), so not sure about counting on having a grill available unless someone shows up early to camp one out or has one to bring.

Awesome. So does 3pm work on the 17th for most everyone? A park sounds great to me. We could also just bring blankets, some snacks, and sit out by Lake of the Isles or something, if it's nice.

Aw, I'd love to do a park/picnic meetup, especially since it's kid and pregnant lady friendly - but the 17th is Art-a-Whirl in NE, SO many fun free activities!  And it's my neighborhood so I'm extra invested!

Aw man. Didn't realize that was Art-a-Whirl weekend, the 17th also happens to be the Linden Hills neighborhood garage sale where all the ritzy people have tons of new novels for sale for 50 cents. Should we choose a different day or weekend? Maybe a Friday evening so we don't conflict with all the summer events coming up?

More like Elder signs, some euro games.  Haven't painted minatures for a while - short on time!

I later learned that people with all-start game tickets got first dibs, then Imagine Dragons did a presale for their fan club, as well as how many were given to sponsors.  I feel there were very few that were actually available for us common folk.

I just joined the forums.  I live in WBL and work in Lake Elmo.  I have three kids-- but can make some time on Thursdays if it is a regular meetup.  Speaking of kids, I feel guilty not giving them everything they want, even though I know it is anti-m.  I think it is because I can't spend the time with them so all I got is money.  I am trying to change my mindset to every time I spend money that is adding the time it takes to retirement.  They are 10, 5, and 2 so already missing out and not likely t be reitred until 7-9 years from now at my best estimation. Anyone else a mom and struggling here?

Dang, I haven't checked this thread in a while and missed the first meet up.

I know summers are tough for people so lets do a weeknight meet up soon! Maybe happy hour time to save some cash? Say 4:30? It looks like we have people east and west. How about W.A. Frost in St. Paul. They have a nice patio and would be relatively quite compared to inside a bar/restaurant.

How about this Thursday the 17th? I can call and make reservations if they take them for the patio.

I guess it depends on if others can do the earlier happy hour time.

Are there others out there that are flexible during the day? My preferred time would be during the day sometime but I assumed most people couldn't do that.

I am available most of the day.

But I am on the west side - Minnetonka.

Isn't W.A. Frost expensive?

There is BOGO pizza deal at Pairings tonight (Tuesdays). They also have some happy hour drink specials.

The have great gourmet pizzas - about $12 (you would get two).

I am open to anything - but St Paul is a little too far.

Isn't Pairings in Hopkins? I'd say that is definitely further away from the East siders than Grand Ave is from the West siders. No?

I've found that when planning gatherings like these with local groups, it is best to look at the cities as the 494/694 loop. This would put the "center" of the metro at about 94 and 280. So basically anything around that point will usually get the most attendance.

Tuesdays would work for me as well, so Tue or Thur.

I'll bike over from work, and will probably arrive at MIA between 6:15 and 6:30 tomorrow evening. Any ideas on how the mustachians can find and recognize each other? Bike night sounds awesome, but I have a meeting tonight.  I'd be up for a meetup at a park sometime, especially if kids are welcome...  was just looking at this site the other day:  http://www.mplsmusicandmovies.com/  so many nights of free music!

Also hi to the new people - I live in NE Mpls and have a 3 1/2 year old with another one the way in ...  12 weeks?

@Shelly - that is really tough about working, especially with the little one.  Don't suppose there is any scenario where you could take a couple years off?  I get all kinds of shit (from my family mostly) about not "using my degree" (engineering), but I'm much happier being broke and staying at home.  I watch other people's kids for extra cash, it's actually pretty good money and SO nice for the kids to play with each other, I'd say it is usually easier than just staying home with my own alone.

Haha

Harriet would be a good option, Flat Earth is getting out of most peoples way from the little I know of where they live.  Northbound could be another good option.

The plus about the park would be I can bring my dog, but some breweries I can bring my dog as well if we sit outside (not required if it's really cold).
Title: Re: Twin Cities
Post by: MgoSam on October 21, 2014, 12:25:13 PM
Lake Harriet does have outside seating, but I haven't really been there past September so it would just depend on the weather.

For Flat Earth, I don't know if they would object to your dog. FEB's owner has two or three retrievers that I've seen lounging in the Tap Room, though they are hunting dogs and so extremely disciplined, if I recall they would sit to the side and only come to someone if they were summoned, I personally loved it because I got to play with some amazing dogs while sampling their brews. Of course, they might be skiddish about another dog coming in, so my guess is that he won't be allowed entrance :-(.

Hmm. Good question.  I will be the mid-20s chick wearing a mostly white baseball cap (it's got a gray and black shield-looking design on the front but I think is mostly white).  If it's reasonable outside, I will request an entire picnic table outside, but it's predicted to be 37 degrees on Sunday.  Otherwise I'll get a biggish table for like 6.

I will be there at 5 pm, unless 5:30 or 6 will be better? Someone else please weigh in.

I was signed up to get notifications on this thread, too, but didn't for some reason. Anyway, I just saw this, and would love to tag along on Sunday if it's OK. I'll plan on being at Northbound on Sunday at 5 PM.

They don't take reservations as it turns out, but the dude this morning said chances were reasonable since there's no football games or similar omg-bar nights going on.  I'll try to get there a few minutes early and get our name on the list.

Yeah, see the few previous posts. I went but arrived very late. Talked to a couple fellow mustachians briefly then joined one to watch Walking Dead at another joint with her friends.

Just confirming it was a go last round. I'd be up for trying at more of an appearance next time.

This is the closest meet-up that I would be able to attend and unfortunately my mustachian ways prevent me from getting there. I went car-less a year ago and now only means of transportation is walking, biking, and city bus.

If anyone goes and is swinging through Eau Claire, WI..a large 27 year old man with FI/RE is willing to split gas :)

Hello!
My first post on the forum. I'm trying to think of a place for a meet-up in the Twin Cities in the middle of winter, but not coming up with anything. So, just wanted to say I'd be interested in joining. In the spring/summer, I'd be happy to organize something. I just hate winter. Hubby and I fell into the making more/spending more trap after being so poor in grad school while living in NYC. Last year we got our heads back on, started following MMM and just completed our year with a 61% savings rate.  It's good to be back on track.

Question of the day to the Mustachians of the Twin Cities.

Do any of you have any suggestions on where I can borrow bike tools?   My bike is long overdue for an overhaul, but I am not particularly interested in buying the tools applicable to my $75 bike.  I am looking for in particular a crank puller, not sure what its called, but my pedals are held on by a nut with 4 round holes so that  Peg Spanner, lock ring spanner, and the thin wrenches to disassemble and reassemble my hubs.

Thanks in advance!
Dan

I would try Freewheel Bike.  They have space and tools and you can just go do stuff.  I haven't used them personally.

I know many who use Spokes: http://spokesconnect.org/

According to their website: SPOKES offers open shop hours where anyone can use our bike repair tools.  Our mechanics and fantastic volunteers will help anyone learn how to fix their own bike.

That's really close to my office, I have some stupidish questions about biking and doing things on my bike that I would love to get answered. Do I just show up there during their hours with my bike?

Wednesday 5-9pm, Saturday 1-5pm open shop.  $9 donation suggested and great new and used parts available with mechanics to help.  Great idea to promote biking in community...

Well just for example,

I am a CPA and I have a small tax practice, I would happily give advice or do tax returns business and personal on trade for all sorts of things.    Right now, I would love to trade services with a lawyer to look for he purchase agreement on my house.

I would do a return or a few returns for some one to help me set tile in my bathroom, cut down a tree in my yard, or what ever else some one has to trade.  I also have various fancy yard equipment (gas trimmer, pressure washer, snow blower)  I have acquired for free and fixed up, although I am selling my house, so I will need to find a new home for these types of things.   I think I do a pretty good job not owning things, but I still end up with stuff that gets used rarely,  I am sure that is the case with almost every one here.

Other skills I have, I can do rudimentary bike repairs and am more than happy to work through complicated ones with any one wanting a partner or some one to bounce ideas off of in the project.

I can diagnose and fix most small engines problems.

I do not own very many specialized tools, but I have a lot of general things to a considerate and caring borrower.

I have an extra bike that I use for guests a week or two a year that could easily be used for other peoples guests.

Those are some examples, I am sure there are more but that is a rough cut of the idea any way.

Cheers,
Dan

So glad to post for the first time here, I've been a reader since last September, and finally joined the forum- mostly to see about meeting some mustachians in St.Paul (east-side!) or Mpls if I can swing it. I see you've got a crew here, so let me say Hello.
-Stefan

And as for this:

... or what ever else some one has to trade.

I happen to know a fair bit about (home-scale) landscaping with MN native plants (native plants are quite mustachian) and might often have seedlings or volunteer plants to give to or trade with forum fellows.

Oooooo. I've got my townhome association looking into going back to native plants after seeing that they spent a ridiculous sum of money on high maintenance plants with little purpose in mind (like protect against erosion/provide shade/etc.) Would be interested in chatting if they ever do get a meet-up going!

I am a new reader and live in the Minneapolis area. Under 30 and I am applying to accelerated nursing schools. I know, taking on debt is not very mustachian, but I am extremely excited about it. Would absolutely be willing to meetup and learn from you. From what I can tell Mustashians seem to have a knack for teaching as well!

Have a great Memorial Day Weekend!

This is my first post on here so please be kind.  I used to post under a shared alias with my wife, but figured that I/we could gain more knowledge and insight by having our own aliases.

In any case, DDrake, Your tagline is awesome!  You have to love some Dick Enrico.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and propose a few dates, times, and locations.  We may even offer up our home/backyard as a meeting place if we could have good weather for a bonfire.  I figure that if you are on this forum, odds are pretty good that you are a safe & sane person, but either way, it might be good if we chatted for 1-3 minutes on the phone first to be sure! :)  And, it is certainly more Mustachian to drink the same beer out of a bottle/can @ 1/4 the price of one in a bar!  Either way though, we are excited to get together with some cool people!

Here is a link to a Doodle I just created.  http://doodle.com/3ifuded6m8f4y22r (http://doodle.com/3ifuded6m8f4y22r)  Please feel free to confirm any dates and locations that work for you!  If you can make all four but have a preference, please feel free to comment on this board!

I am really looking forward to learning and sharing with all of you, and just meeting more people that have similar views.

Hi Everyone!
I'm fairly new to this forum, but not the lifestyle. My husband and I (+ 3 kids) live in WI about an 1 and 20 minutes from the twin cities. We get over to the Cities fairly often. I'm thinking that this is the closest group to us. We might be available for the July 25th date for a meet up.

Hello again everyone.  We are quickly approaching our first suggested meet-up.  Seeing that we have 3, 2, 3 and 5 people that can make it to the four options listed (other than my wife and I), I wanted to one more time ask folks to update their selections if any other weekends have now become available.

Shannon and I will go to each and every session as long as at least one person shows up because we think it's always good to expand our network with like-minded people! :)  That being said, we would like it to be as impactful as possible.

Anyone else that is following and hasn't responded yet, you should do so too!

One confirmed no, 0 confirmed yes's so far. I'm going to bike to work tonight instead. I think MMM will approve as I am working towards a bonus that would help us take care of our hair on fire debt emergency. Please come join us at one of the next three sessions. Why don't I be proactive and start to see who can confirm for next weekend?

Just a quick note to followers of this thread that I may have convinced nhermanson and shermanson to consider moving the start of July meet-up UP a few hours so those of us with mini-mustachians can come and join in as a family (instead of leaving someone at home or getting a sitter).

Stay tuned for actual timing, but we were discussing somewhere in the 5 or 5:30 range (right nhermanson?).

The link above on doodle.com should take you to all the info.
thank you!

@ Monkey stache: It's never too late!

If I failed to mention, let's do this Mustachian style...

Feel free to bring something to grill, drink, snacks, etc.  We are just covering the hospitality, some yard games and propane :)

We are closing on our second house next Friday, so we do not have any spare cash! :)

I'm late to the party but would considering coming by if I knew where it was?
Just a quick note to followers of this thread that I may have convinced nhermanson and shermanson to consider moving the start of July meet-up UP a few hours so those of us with mini-mustachians can come and join in as a family (instead of leaving someone at home or getting a sitter).

Stay tuned for actual timing, but we were discussing somewhere in the 5 or 5:30 range (right nhermanson?).

Hello fellow Mustachians!  The day is upon us.  We look forward to seeing many of you at our humble abode this evening.  Shannon has a baby shower this afternoon, so we will be even less likely to be sucka consumers for our new baby, because other people are doing that for us!

Let's start @ 5:00 as she should be home by then.

The address is
873 Idaho Avenue West
Saint Paul, MN 55117

Sometimes Google Maps/MapQuest/other navigation systems take you to a different Idaho Avenue that is roughly 1 mile away.  Please make sure that the end destination is right off of Victoria street.

Here is the correct Google Maps link:

Thanks to Nate for organizing all these. They really are an awesome idea and I apologize for bailing. My only excuse is that I had the opportunity to do nothing/sleep, and while that sounds super lame, it's something my toddler doesn't let me do a lot/ever and it was glorious.

Hi All!  Just moved (back) to Minneapolis, partly because of its mustachianness.  Any meetups coming up?

Very likely too short notice for most, but Merlin's Rest has free Irish music Fridays, theoretically at dusk, but in fact when the musicians become sufficiently lubricated, my guess around 9-10pm.  Late for many, but very mustachian. Warning.  Some nights there seems to be a bagpipe.

I would be open for having a meetup soonish. Merlin's Rest works, or how about Lake Harriet Brewery? I'm down for wherever, it just depends on the time and date.

Depends on the day, my November is fairly busy, mostly due to Thanksgiving. I know that all of my Saturdays with the possible exception of the 28th. If this stands, I would be open to meeting that night.

Also the 20th (Friday) might work for me.

If anyone works in downtown Minneapolis, I'd be happy to meet for lunch sometime.

I also work in downtown, I would do this too. We could do it mustachian-style: Find a place to sit down in the skywalk and bring our tupperwares from home :)

I know someone. She pays a lot more in rent than she prefers, but lives in a great area and can walk to pick up groceries, go to work, and most everything she wants to do. I don't know if she's compared the numbers, but I'm guessing that even with the higher rent she pays, she comes way ahead than if she lived somewhere cheaper, but had to have a car. She does rely on rides though for some outings, but that's what friends are for and I'm guessing that she's found a way to make it work as she's been without a car for a few years and has no plans to change that.

I'm glad that you are happy without having a car, keep it up.

Merlin's Rest might be a good choice.  They're not especially cheap or anything, but neither are they expensive.  Just a good neighborhood pub.  And it's easy to get to by bus or by car, and it's centrally located on Lake Street, just across the river from St. Paul.

Hey all, never been to the Twin Cities but my wife and I are planning to take a Mustachian vacation up there around Labor Day 2016 (September 3rd-9th, roughly).

We'd love to meet up with other Mustachians during our visit! We're currently working and saving in Evansville, IN but think the Twin Cities could be a great option for us to live when we're FIREd in a few years.

If you have any tips on potential Mustachian neighborhoods for us to scout out while we're in town, or any other places/activities to check out, we'd really appreciate it! It can be anything; breweries, parks, volunteer opportunities, whatever. We're open to new stuff. Thanks!

Could you give any more details?  Sounds like you want to live in the city?  I live in Hamline Midway, which is 'up and coming' (read: a little ghetto), but that means it's cheap!  It's also perfectly safe, and has a lot of much older houses that are smaller and more affordable than what's available in some other neighborhoods, and has  a lot of easy bike/walk access to necessities and to transit lines.  In general St Paul is cheaper than Minneapolis, but Minneapolis is 'cooler'.

Yeah, the Twin Cities are at the top of our "livable cities" list because the area seems to meet most of our criteria:  If any of that does not describe the Twin Cities area, please feel free to correct my ignorance or suggest alternative cities. As I said, I've never actually been there. We're eager to learn more about our options!

Yeah, the Twin Cities are at the top of our "livable cities" list because the area seems to meet most of our criteria:
  • Bikeable and walkable, with public transit as a bonus (ideally we'd have no car)
  • Nearby parks, trails, nature
  • Aldi! Or similar discount grocery store. But I seriously love Aldi.
  • Extensive library system
  • Within roughly 30-60 minute drive (or public transit ride) to major airport
  • Liberal/secular communities, nonprofits, and volunteer opportunities
  • Within half-day travel to family near Chicago
  • General city amenities, e.g. free community events and classes, high concentration of people using services like Craigslist for used goods, concerts and festivals, virtually infinite selection of craft beers, and so on
  • Housing in the $800-$1200 per month range for 1-2 bedrooms (we expect to be renting for many years)
  • Sizeable market for multi-family homes if we decide to invest in rental property
If any of that does not describe the Twin Cities area, please feel free to correct my ignorance or suggest alternative cities. As I said, I've never actually been there. We're eager to learn more about our options!

I've been car-free since 2009 and back in the Twin Cities since 2012.  People have serious attitudes about being car-free though.  It's so embedded as a cultural norm as a source of "freedom".  I don't think I spend any more time waiting for transit then people do scraping off their cars in the winter either.  I also don't think it's any reason necessarily to spend more on rent unless you happen to want to pay for the convenience of walking to work.  Do people not know about Walk Score in general?

I'll bet you guys will love it, the Twin Cities is a great place to live overall.  The main drawbacks are (1) the winters are too hardcore for some people (2) it gets sprawl-y with the metro area  (3) it can be harder to meet people/get past the acquaintance stage than other areas.

But (3) may be easier if there's a Twin Cities MMM meetup again.
+1 for a location on the green line.

Sir Manatee,

I'm not sure what our schedule will look like in September, but if I'm available it would be great to have a get together somewhere while you're in town.

As far as things to do, I'd strongly recommend renting a NiceRide (bike share bike) and riding along some of the bike paths and neighborhoods in the metro.  https://www.niceridemn.org/  I'd check out neighborhoods you're interested in to get a feel for the vibe there.  Uptown tends to have a more young professional hang-out vibe, downtown Saint Paul pretty much rolls up the sidewalk at 6pm, Northeast Minneapolis is cool artist/brewer/craftsman feel, etc.

There's a lot of cool stuff to see and do, but if you're looking at it for a place to live, I'd think about the things you like to do regularly and do those.  If that's take walks by a lake, then check out some of the lakes.  If its peruse the library, then head to the library in the neighborhood.  I guess instead of looking at it from a tourist, think like a local.  Check out the grocery store options (several co-ops, big grocery chain Cub foods, Aldi, specialty stores (butcher), etc.).

I have lived in minneapolis for over 20 years.  The coolest neighborhood in my opinion is south minneapolis/midtown.  It is close to everything and full of good food and bike paths.  I would recommend going to the midtown global market and drinking some kombucha beer @ the east lake brewery.

If you're going to be biking a lot, I'd try renting a bike from a local bike shop, like Freewheel in Minneapolis. The Nice Ride bikes are fine for short trips but difficult to ride compared to a regular road bike or mountain bike.

Thank you all for the replies!

It was our plan from the start to try to live like locals during our stay, so we're on the same page, jda1984! Our aim is to spend a big chunk of our time checking out neighborhood parks, trails, libraries, groceries, and such. I hope we'll get to explore several areas of the city!

Our AirBnB is in Whittier, near the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, but we'll have our car and will be able to get anywhere in the city. I'm glad we'll be close to Midtown though, it sounds like a great spot! And Minnehaha Falls is a must.

And we're definitely planning on using the Nice Ride system; thanks merula for the tip that they may not be great for long trips, that's helpful for planning our excursions.

This is way in advance, but would anyone like to help me plan a Twin Cities meetup (or multiple) in early September 2016?

Hi Sir Manatee. I'd be happy to help plan/provide a spot for a meetup. My BF might even be back to home brewing by then. We ended up in Richfield, which is a suburb directly south of Minneapolis and to the east of Edina. We were looking in S Minneapolis initially but Richfield was a bit more affordable than SW Minneapolis and allowed us to get a little further from the airport than SE Minneapolis. This location has been ideal for us, as we are within walking distance to grocery stores and the library and are still within easy biking distance to a lot of Minneapolis fun as well. I have been thinking about going car free as I switched to a company in Richfield and I think it is possible in a lot of areas, depends on whether/where you work and live.

As to suggestions I have quite a few. One of them would be Surly as they opened their brew hall and have sour beers on tap, which I appreciate. I have a google map I set up of restaurants and bars that my boyfriend and I have went to/want to go. I'd be happy to share it if you are interested.

I'd be down for a mustache meetup at Surly!  I'm pretty booked through the end of June, but how does late June or July work for people?

Cromacster - cute dog! We'd be up for Surly then as well. Our current schedules are pretty much open for late June and July, except mid-July.

I think the goal was to shoot for when SirManatee is in town in September, but would people be interested in a sooner one as well?  September is a ways off.

Consider me 100% interested! And thank you for the offer to help plan a meetup over our stay, I really appreciate it!

Surly and Richfield are on our must-visit list now. I was only able to research Richfield briefly but it seems to have apartments in our price range, and I love that there's an Aldi. If it's walkable and bikeable, I think it could work for us. Thank you for the tip!

Oh and everyone please feel free to plan more meetups before September! I know it's far off, just wanted to gauge interest and get a few suggestions to start our itinerary.

Good note druth, I wasn't quite clear in that particular post. We are up for sometime in June/July as well as a meetup in September. Have to enjoy summer while we can and as you noted, September is far off.

I'll figure out how to share a google map again then. I feel in love with google maps after the BF used it as a planning tool for our vacations.

I love having quick access to an Aldi as well. There is also a Trader Joes, Cub, Target, and Sams Club around as well, which is helpful since I've never managed to get everything on my list at Aldi. I would think that public transit is better in Minneapolis but I have been focusing on biking and walking to places. And it works pretty well when I don't use the car as a crutch.

Hey, I would be willing to help organize a meetup in June or July. In order to gauge interest, I'm going to make a Doodle. Please mark weekends you would like to meet. I've added the option for every saturday in june and july. http://doodle.com/poll/qm3edasf85482pxi

The coolest neighborhood in my opinion is south minneapolis/midtown.  It is close to everything and full of good food and bike paths.

Darn right!! And don't forget the B grade produce at midtown global market :)

Not a location request, but I'm coming back on a flight at 2PM that day, so after that would be good for me if that isn't a burden on anybody else (I see the doodle says 6PM, but just in case).  Also thanks for organizing Forest!

Yes please! I'm a first time forum-poster, but I've been gobbling up Mustashianism for several months now. I would love to meet up with like-minded people. I live on the University of Minnesota Campus, so as far as the two downtowns, St. Paul and Minneapolis, I'm fairly central. If there's interest in coming hear or if anyone wants to give a different idea I would love to meet up before the snow sets in. :D Good vibes to you all.

I would love to have a meetup, does anyone have the energy/time to organize it?

For the next month I believe I'm free nearly all Friday's and Sundays and am flexible on location. I live in Roseville, but am willing to drive a little distance if it helps ensure someone else can attend.

Nov 25th should work for me, though my house will be unavailable.

Do we just bite the anti-mustachian bullet and meet at a bar/pub/restaurant?

Or we could meet in a covered space in park in the cold and people could bring warm beverages (http://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/off-topic/non-alcoholic-fancy-drinks/) for themselves or to share??
Title: Re: Twin Cities

The 25th might work for me. I think I mentioned earlier that I'm currently at school on the University of Minnesota campus, but I would love to make my way somewhere to meet with ya'll.

We could always meet near me if there's interest (campus is central to the twin cities). I wouldn't be able to really host well, but we could do the 'bring-your-own-drink' type deal.
Title: Re: Twin Cities
Post by: MgoSam on November 16, 2016, 01:06:38 PM
I might be willing to host at my house in Roseville on the 25th, depending on whether or not my roommate is ok with it. It would be a strict BYOB as I don't currently drink, but I might be open to brewing some tea (esp if you like white tea as I have a ton that I barely use).

I will need a heads up on the number coming and would prefer not to post my address on here so I'll need attendees' numbers (PM me) so I can text them my address.

Seems like a lot of missed opportunities here. Either because of timing, cost or something else.

It looks like doodle, Google and meetup.com were looked into. How about a secret Facebook group, with the link here? Once there, we can make events in the group, which should help with the issue of notifications and reply speed.

Hi all, I'm currently living in Chicago, but about to close on a house in the Victory neighborhood of Minneapolis. I plan to be back and forth from MN to IL for a bit for my job, but eventually land full time in MN. It would be great to start to connect with frugal fellows in the cities now. I'm a MN native so I get the joke about being good Minnesotans, but I'd be up for hosting a get together once I'm settled. I'll also be looking to rent two rooms in the house, starting April . It's a 3 bed, 2 bath with a nice patio and fenced yard. I'm open to dog roomies. Looking forward to meeting you all!

Oh, and I don't use Facebook, so if a meet up is scheduled, could someone post it in here too?

My wife grew up in St Paul.  We will be there for a couple of weeks in July.  Planning to rent a house so she and the kids can spend time with family.  As we get closer I will schedule a meet up somewhere near Grand Ave.

I live in Bentonville, AR, and have connected here with a mustachian.  He a great guy and we stay in touch.  I would love to meet up with a bigger group in MSP.  More to come...

Hey Twin Cities folks! Some of you, I think, know me from the Journals section.

I'm coming to Minneapolis for a personal finance conference in July - and I'd love to organize a mustachian meetup while I'm there - I'm free from the conference on Saturday July 29th and Wednesday August 2nd. I'm staying in Powderhorn but am happy to go anywhere I can get to on a bicycle (far). Park, potluck, something mustachian, with perhaps optional karaoke?

Are folks into helping make this happen - suggesting a good place? I haven't been to the Twin Cities in ~10 years so I'm eager to see it again!

Fidgiegirl has a small AirBnB suite in her basement, in a lovely and convenient neighbourhood (as far as I could tell in my short visit) in St. Paul. And she's just wonderful. In case anyone is looking for accommodation. (I have no idea how booked up her place is.)
