I recognize this isn't the premier city to live inexpensively.
I find that other than rent, if you've got a bicycle, things are cheap. Cheap restaurants, plenty of inexpensive/free events. Inexpensive groceries if done right. Would love to meet some others with similar financial interests.
Myself, I love fixing things and cooking. Would love to learn how to make wine and share more of what I have.

I'm living in Toronto, and fairly inexpensively at that -- $1200/mo for a 2 bedroom -- though it involves putting up with the odd cockroach and a tiny kitchen. On the bright side, we have tons of natural light and an awesome view of the CN Tower in the distance.
I'm currently learning how to jar seasonal produce to preserve the harvest for the colder months. I also subscribe to a CSA that brings me a box of fresh, local produce and a dozen free-range, small-flock eggs every other week.
I'd also like to meet like-minded people, in Toronto or in the GTA (I'm originally from Burlington).

Was recently in Oakville (extremely expensive), now living on border of Scarborough/Pickering.
Would be up to a get together... not a huge fan of sitting around in a circle chatting... but doing something while chatting is cool... billiards, bowling, poker :)
I'm far from MMM lifestyle but definitely on track for FIRE.

I'm in the west GTA, definitely agreed that most people are concerned with getting the biggest home on the smallest lot, and financing the most amount of money for a flashy car. I've seen far too many young & middle aged people driving $50k + luxury vehicles here than anywhere else I've traveled!

Hey everyone, 2014 has been quite the year of change for me personally. Whether it be in terms of taking care of my health&fitness, looking into investing or thinking about what people actually do once they achieve financial independence, MMM played a significant part in awakening my own motivations.
If people are interested, I'd like to have a meetup sometime on the weekend of August 22-24, likely near Downtown Toronto although I do have a car as well. Doesn't have to be anything fancy, Pool hall/Board games at a cafe/small pub/lunch/beach. Let me know if you guys are interested!

Hey Prospector - yes high park is pretty kid friendly, it's huge and your kids can run around. Though there are lots of dogs that come there, too, just fyi.

Anything going on in the Area when MMM comes through the beginning of July?
I wanted to suggest something crazy like a MMM meet up at Canada's Wonderland for the Mustachians who get seasons passes/meal plans and take advantage of the super cheap family entertainment/food. It's all basically free if you go more than 1-2 times with food being free after the 4th time. As long as your don't have to travel far to get there the more you go the cheaper it gets. :-)
I'll be there with my 5 kids the whole week of June 29th-July 6th anyway if anyone wants to meet up there for some fun MMM discussions.

Prospector - sorry for not replying sooner. Apparently the notify feature does not work so well :/
Anyway, I'll wear bright yellow - highligher yellow - pants so everyone can recognize me. Does that work? I'll also post a link to a map with a marker to where I'll be (not decided yet, but thinking by the bigger cherry blossom area).

Sorry to have missed! Family matters call. Anyone want to share a synopsis? Was another planned?
I came a bit late so not sure what I missed at the beginning, but the conversations ranged all over the place. It was a beautiful day, great temperature, and we sat under partial tree shade at a picnic table with other families etc. around. Lots of talk about our histories, how we found MMM etc., jobs, what part of Toronto/GTA we live in. A fair bit of talk about investments (as you can see from the links from slsdly), dividends-only vs. regular 4% withdrawal, points cards and bank fees, things like that. My ebike link came from a brief discussion about those mostly down at one end of the table. A bit of talk about what parts of the forum we mostly follow (the anti-mustachian shame kind of threads were popular). A question of 'do you talk about mustachianism with others' was met with mostly pretty quick No's. Several of the group were "tech" people and we talked about that lifestyle, working from home, etc.
I'm sure I've forgotten many of the topics, but I'm sure you get the idea. I didn't hear any talk of another meetup. It's a bit far for me to come very often, but I'd come when I could. There were twelve of us by the end, I think; I'm sure there are many more 'lurkers' around who might come to other meetups.
I have to say, as much as reading and posting on the forum helps connect with kindred spirits, meeting up in real life was really enjoyable, and of course makes it so much easier to get more depth behind people's stories. I was very impressed by everyone in the group -- as you'd expect, a group of people who are taking control of their lives, with good heads on their shoulders and great attitudes.

I live and work in the suburbs... Anyways travelling contra-flow in teh PM peak is OK, right? I hope? I think you can even take a bike on the Lakeshore line in the contraflow direction at peak times, can't you? Maybe I'll split the trip into train and bike components.

According to the Triplinx planner (http://www.triplinx.ca/en/trip-planner/4/JourneyPlanner/Index), if I leave here at 4:00, I make it there at 5:26. Lets see how accurate that is.
Can we reserve a table at 401 games? Or can someone make up a MMM tent card so we can find each other? Never been to a board Game Cafe before so I have no idea what to expect.

Sounds good! I'll be there and will wear my white, green and blue hoodie.
I'm not sure about reservations, but I can get there a little early and get us a table since I get off at 4:30. A sign would be a good idea too. Maybe print off something on a 8.5x11" paper.

Some more info about 401 Games:
There's lots of tables upstairs, typically seating around 8 people per table. No snacks or drinks are available for sale, as far as I know, but you're welcome to bring some with you. Just don't make a mess, obviously.
The door to the games area is directly north (to the right, if you're looking at the storefront) of the main entrance to the shop, up a flight of stairs.
I hope that I'll be able to come.

After talking about how great the waterfront trail is, I got to thinking...
Would there be interest in a Toronto to Whitby bike ride in the late spring after things warm up? Without pinning down exact dates (I'm thinking late May/Early June), the day would look something like...
09h00 - Meet up around the Music Garden or similar location
09h30 - Ride east into the rising sun
10h30 - Rest stop around Rouge Park
11h30 - Rest stop around Ajax
12h30 - Arrive at My place - BBQ/Swim/Sit and tell lies.
Ride GO train or bike back to Toronto (your choice). GO trains are now on a 30 minute schedule on the Lakeshore east line, even on weekends, so transit is pretty derned good, and bikes are allowed 2 per car so getting home shouldn't be much of an issue. Any thoughts/feedback?

Roughly how far is that? I think the farthest I've biked in one go has been 12km!

54 km total, but most people bike at 18 - 20 km/h so its only about a 2.5 - 3 hr ride.

Sounds like everyone had a great time! Surprisingly no photo evidence of any untoward behaviour in the Toronto crowd, which is a good thing.
For the Waterfront ride, I am Thinking that either the weekend before the May 24 or a weekend in June. Early May, the pool will still be cold - we have a heater, but its pricey to run. Then again if folks aren't concerned with using the pool, I won't be concerned with heating it. The weekend of the May 24 are entirely booked already as is the weekend following it. We are a busy family.
There is enough time for another meetup before the ride - I am projecting 4-5 months out here, so if that happens I will do my damndest to be there for planning purposes. If there is not, I'll need to get some feedback here for what folks prefer with regards to dates and activity.
For reference, travelling with GO, your return trip to Toronto will cost you a maximum of $9.55 on the train.

CSR - you're right, there is nothing stopping me from starting on my list of things, except my own self. Which is why I need to resort to the type of self-talk I mentioned. Knowing and doing are very separate things, plus I am a lazy person. Almost any progress I make comes from figuring out how to make the lazy option the frugal one. Thank you for the reminder.

Last night the grade 2 concert at our kids' school was postponed due to the 'storm of the century' that entirely missed us. That has little bearing on this social event except that it was rescheduled to March 8th.
Sorry guys, but the kids hafta come first.

Just a quick follow up on prospector's questions -
1. no courtyard in building (still a construction area) but if we really want to be outside, it is less than 5min walk to the waterfront, we can opt for spontaneity.
2. no secure bike area in building but been told there's a bike rack in the back area outside of the building (it's a temp accommodation for me, so not that familiar with all the "features").

That would be fun, and was the reason I was posting to follow in this thread.
Our plan is to spend a bit of time in Toronto in the fall, decompressing and relaxing with friends and family before we make our way slowly south.. but, if we don't detach from work in time and it looks like there'd already be freezing and snow, there's a chance we'd go to the southwest instead and chase the good weather before making our way back up for our extended break.
So depends on the weather, and how fast we get around to quitting :)

Haha someone's condo was offered by the host. Turned out to be 2 of the better meetups I've been to. We each brought some snacks/drinks, and talked for hours overlooking Lake Ontario. We're totally spoiled now, but I guess we can settle for boardgames at a cafe =)

I feel bad slsdly (andrew right?). I should have offered you a ride, I completely forgot you live near high park..... I actually drove down younge to see if I could see you because I was extra guilty.
lastly thanks for being patient with my spouse, she is very shy at first and has a hard time speaking in english in louder environments.

I did make it and had a good time. Sorry to miss you, and thanks for helping to get it organized.
You all reminded me to double check a couple of things: we did empty out our TFSA afterall when we moved to the US, so we are more in compliance then I thought, and I am going to double check taking up Canadian residency again.. it may just be worth the hassle to do two sets of taxes, however lazy I am.
Will make sure to drop by again next time we are in town (if we ever leave).

Not sure how many of you remember that I came out to a Toronto meet-up last January, and I really enjoyed meeting those of you who were there. I don't remember real names, or even all the forum names, but I remember csr, and plainjane, and mermaid, I think? And a couple of others. Prospector, I think you were supposed to be there but something came up.
At the time, my dad had recently landed in hospital, and one thing led to another ... anyway, for a while I got too busy with "real life" to keep up with the forums. But I have been back on for a little bit, have signed up for CMC, and would love to get to know some of you at another Toronto meet-up before then. Will watch this space for any emerging plans (it sounds like I just recently missed one).

The seats and tables are horrible and not group friendly.I eat there quite often. High chair stools of varying heights, small bar tables, and perimeter bar tables.

I have vowed to start using my bread machine again, and my yeast expired in 2015. I haven't tested it yet, but even if it does still work, if I get back into bread machine baking in a big way, then I'd use it soon enough...
Edited to say: I love the idea that our little meet-ups could be like a live version of a Buy Nothing Group. I should look to see if I have anything easily portable that someone might want :-)

I did not know what a colloid is when I read your post. So, I looked it up (i.e. googled it.) I read (part of) the Wikipedia entry on colloids, and I still don't know what a colloid is.
But among other things that Wikipedia told me, I now know that "Milk is an emulsified colloid of liquid butterfat globules dispersed within a water-based solution."
This does not make drinking a glass of milk more appealing to me. :-/

A colloid is one state of matter suspended in another. Milk has solids (fats0 suspended in a liquid. Pop has gasses suspended in a liquid. Soft serve ice cream has gasses suspended in a liquid.
My colloids have gasses suspended in a solid.

Ok, I can't believe I'm the first to post an update. It's almost midnight, and I just got home. Made a quick stop at my mom's on the way home, because she lives close to where I parked to take the subway. I try to stop in while in the neighbourhood, to help her change her bed, or carry stuff up and down the stairs for her (laundry, big bags of dog food, etc)
Anyway - guys! Tonight was a very lucrative visit. I was putting stuff in a tall cupboard for her, and saw her mixing bowls, and mentioned that I seem to have given away/donated all my mixing bowls, by accident. I mean, I was deliberately paring down but I think I gave away one set, then later gave away another set forgetting that I'd given away the first one. This led to a conversation about trying to cook more, and she offered me the newer of two kitchen mixers that she has, a practically brand new Cuisinart one. It was bought when she thought her Kitchenaid mixer was going to die, and has only been used twice, because the Kitchenaid one is still going strong. She hardly bakes anymore, so she happily gave it to me, along with the blender and food processor attachments, still in their boxes.
Gosh, I have no excuses not to cook anymore. I have a mixer. I have yeast. What more could I need???
plainjane, thank you again for the yeast, I'll put it to good use. And thanks to all of you for all the wonderful snacks and goodies. I had a really good time. For anyone who has never been to a meet-up, who might be reading this, you should definitely come the next time we get together. None of us are totally crazy or weird, in fact, everyone seems to be perfectly nice!

In the meantime, come and find a part of the forums that you enjoy, and jump in! Are you working on any particular area of your finances right now? Are you in the paying down debt phase (if so, think about checking out the Throw Down the Gauntlet section, to join a challenge to help cut your expenses) or maybe you're trying to figure out your Investment strategy (there's a section for that too) or rehabbing your house or building your real estate empire - sections for those too! The forums are actually a pretty good way to get to know people, if you kind of pick one section that interests you, you'll find some of the same people posting over and over, and over time start to build up a picture of their lives. Jumping right into more personal stories, of course, means going to the journals...

I agree! For the lurkers, three hours to chat in person sounds like a lot but it really isn't. I encourage you to engage with the community for more in-depth discussions and to receive and reciprocate information and support.
Also, please suggest dates or meeting venues in parts of the GTA where you'd like to see a meet up. The GTA is so spread out I think other Mustachians would show up to a gathering closer to them. If you'd like a particular theme or topic to discuss at a meet up, please suggest that, too!
I had fun last night! Thank you to all the bakers, DH enjoyed the goodies I brought home. (PJ, I didn't eat many of the vegetables I brought last night, either. Because it was important to appreciate the baking efforts of others. ;)

Over in one of the journals, someone asked Prospector how the meet-up went. His response led to me making a comment about how much I enjoyed the cookies our anonymous friend brought (I'm referring to the young lady who said she hasn't actually joined the forums yet, but saw the meet-up listed and came to check it out. I'm so sorry - I sat next to you all night and asked you your name twice, but I've already forgotten it!)
Anyway, someone else in the journals asked for more information about these wonderful cookies, and being in a kind of goofy mood, I penned this (fashioned on the famous Ode on a Grecian Urn) and posted it. Wow, plainjane, I'm really glad you linked to that. Do you know if it's been posted anywhere else on the forum? I haven't been online much today. I'm actually really upset on behalf of the folks who participated in that meet-up - I feel like the person who shared those thoughts with J.D. Roth betrayed the trust of the other people in that group. And I definitely think that a really good article about that topic could have been written without basically calling them out in such an identifying way. Anything he's subsequently posted back-pedalling about his relationship with MMM himself doesn't make it better, because it's the people who attend that meet-up that have been publicly shamed.
I've made a comment, which I rarely do. It's awaiting moderation, but I'll post it here too. I made it in response to another person's comment.

My response: Tonya, you seem to be upset about finding your personal details – even without your name – being published by that frugal PF blogger. Yet you are commending this article, which essentially does the same thing to others. I’m curious how you think the people who attended that MMM meet-up might be feeling right about now, first being talked about behind their back, and then having that information shared in an article? Especially given that anyone participating in the MMM forums would be able to identify at least their online personas!
For the record, I am a participating member of the MMM forum, but not in the U.S. I’ve attended a couple of MMM meet-ups, and like someone else said, have experienced 100% support, an 0% shame.
J.D. Roth, I think it is a shame that you felt it was necessary to identify this particular group of people who chose to trust in meeting up with virtual strangers, and expose them for the sake of an article. This same article could easily have been written about the frugal one-upmanship dynamic prevalent in *various* parts of the PF/frugality world, without any reference to MMM, the location of the meet-up, or its date.

But I also feel that people should be careful about sharing stories online that aren't theirs. IDK. It feels like this should be a balance. Yeah - Norbert sounds like a great guy.
But seriously, at the meetup, its a bunch of pals around a table. Ideas are shared, but I think discretion needs to be applied. Discretion means that the essence of what is said can be shared without details and without being a dick. The problem arises when someone with a poor sense of discretion starts sharing beyond the group - and there is no way to control that one individual - or know who it may be.
When we were active in sailing, I once wrote up an article for a local magazine. I shared it with a forumite for editing. The other person agreed it was great - then submitted it on my behalf to a larger publication - because it was so great. The larger publication claimed rights on it without ever publishing, and the local mag could no longer use the piece. I lost out on both ends. Poor discretion can hurt people. A lot.
You never know what people might do, and although we have a sense of each other, trust is a gamble. The way I see things, my role is to be as trustworthy and to have as much discretion as I can. But then I have to trust others to do the same, while expecting them not to. No one here has signed a code of ethics, and no one has made any promises. Its up to you to decide what you are comfortable sharing and how much.
FWIW, at the meetup, Jane and I were discussing our income levels - I was comfortable sharing that with our group, but was more concerned about someone else in the plaza overhearing. I trust our people. but I still know its on me to decide how much is appropriate to share. Of course I broadcast that same information all over my journal...

As you say Prospector, we haven't signed a code of conduct, and I'm not suggesting actually writing one out. But I do think it's worth stating publicly that there are assumptions we make when we get together, which is that we are trusting each other with certain details of our personal and our financial lives, and that we hope - no, expect - that people will exercise discretion with them. Of course, we can't control what people do, but we can as a subset of the larger MMM community, make it clear what the community standards are. Just like, by posting the article here, plainjane, you're suggesting to any Toronto area lurkers that frugal one-upmanship is not part of our community standard, and subtly communicating to them that they shouldn't come to a meet-up with that attitude.
For anyone linking over to the article, you'll see the comment I made. I think he missed my point in the response, so I will post a follow-up. I'm just trying to formulate it in my mind first. The thing is that he could have told exactly the same story, not naming the city in which the meet-up took place, or which online community it related to. That would have been fine. My big issue is that he's not actually kept things as anonymous as he thinks. Anyone who read this forum can figure out who the people are, who are usually a part of that group.
(I have a secondary issue with the fact that he can't say for sure what that group is like, since he wasn't at the meet-up himself and is relying on information filtered through someone else's perceptions. But let's not go there right now.)
TL; DR - Sharing bacon and cookie reports are fine, but let's keep personal details we learn about each other to ourselves. Share people's stories with others only in ways that don't risk them being personally identified. There's a big difference in saying "I was talking to someone the other day who's trying to change careers because their industry has lots of issues," and saying "I was talking to someone at the Toronto MMM Meet-Up, who works in X industry, and is trying to change careers because of it." Remember that anyone you share with, may also share with others, and you lose control over how they tell the story. Some may even choose to share that story with the wider world. (Oh, see, I did go there after all!)

Re: housing, I would recommend something nearby. I have friends who did film at Ryerson and that means plenty of late hours in the editing room. I would avoid Jarvis and Parliament area, but anywhere else is pretty much fair game.

So sorry with the late reply - I don't monitor as much as I should!
My sample size is small - one friend who combined film and theatre and now works at the Canadian Opera Company and is super competent. I never really pried, but the Ryerson's film/theatre programs are very hands on (this based on my research when I went to theatre school at York) but a big part of it is drive. Their grads are kind of everywhere in a good way.

Back from the offsite where there was way too much food, flying out for a client presentation on Wednesday. As for injuries, I am still mobile, and the pain isn't excessive unless I apply pressure. I am just hoping that it gets better before I need to get on the plane - long periods of immobility have historically not been helpful.

I haven't been on in weeks, and I'm really sorry about that. I see I have a ton of messages, which I don't have time to look at right now, and I guess that means my personal e-mail is also probably full of notifications. REALLY busy time around the church, what with Lent / Holy Week / Easter, and compounded with a ton of funerals all at once, and some family stuff.
But, I did have the meet-up marked in my book and am planning on heading downtown after work today to try to connect with you all. Visiting people who are sick at home or in hospital this afternoon, so not sure exactly what time I will get down there though. Will check to see which phone numbers I programmed in my phone last time, and will try to connect with someone (Prospector?) on my way down to make sure y'all are there!

If that menu looks too pricey, there is also Loaded Perogie or Paramount (Lebanese) a few minutes away and both also do takeout. (Before anyone recos them, I will put it on the record that I dislike Hot House and Frans.)

The Thai restaurant plainjane introduced us to last time was great, FYI. In case anyone else coming combines MMMeet ups with their indulgent social spending.

I get off work nearby at 5, usually home by 5:15. So I can properly tidy my apartment, we can start this shindig at 5:45pm?
Note I don't have much in the way of kitchenware or blankets (minimalist), so people will have to bring things to eat and sit on outside.
I have ample amounts of paper towel and if we proceed indoors, plenty of chairs. Can also offer soda, coffee, tea, and tap water.

By the time we got them home and in bed, wife was tired out as well. I mentioned something about "aren't you glad you don't have to work tomorrow", and she had totally forgot that people would have to work tomorrow.. if that's any inspiration :)

Next meetup is at my place on October 19th - arrive any time after 6:00 PM. Take the Lakeshore East train to the Whitby GO station and then ping me for a pickup. We will run a shuttle to the GO station.
A bunch of international guests will be there, so be ready to meet a handful of CMCers. I may be preoccupied with CMC prep stuff, but I'll do my best to be a good host.

For those of you who might be wondering if I'm still coming to CMC, and for those who have given up and presumed me to have been hit by a car, I thought I should let you all know that I am alive (just barely) and coming. Have spoken to Prospector, who assures me that I have a bed, at least. Sorry that I completely bailed on all the advance planning and such. But am looking forward to meeting y'all.

In my experience, the planning is still mostly done on the forum thread. The facebook group is a good reminder for ppl like me, that at times forget to check the forum for months, but are more actively checking facebook.

Somewhere around there could work, I think. Is there an agreed upon "best" night for Toronto folks. I know that I can pretty much never do Wednesdays, other nights are usually ok as long as I have them in my book well ahead of time. Tuesdays and Thursdays are best for me though, as a rule.

I was going to suggest we head to the Allan Gardens Conservatory, a beautiful place to visit, especially (IMO) when it's cold outside and you need a dose of warmth, nature, and green. But I double checked the hours, and they're only open until 5. That was my only inspired suggestion for a location, I'm afraid, and it doesn't work. Where should we meet? It will certainly be too cold for sitting around outside by that time, which limits the free/very cheap options somewhat. And though I would love to suggest meeting somewhere further north or east, I presume that with enough people who work downtown, and with the proximity to the Union GO station, that we should stick to downtown-ish?

There's always loitering in a food court in the PATH as a downtown option. It's fair, though, to take turns moving the location elsewhere in the city to make it more convenient for people who aren't downtown.

That is totally awesome! I've just messaged my sister and a friend to make plans to hit some of these places.
For our meet-up, I don't think any of these will work - a random sampling suggests that most of them close earlier than we would get together. But hey, Torontonians, if you know of any other great *free* places in the city, please share them! I'll note, for example, that one of those museums (Gibson House) seems to be open until 8 on Thursdays, and from 5-8, it's Pay What You Can. And also, High Park has a great castle themed playground for kids, with an easy walk to their little zoo.

I'm certainly open to the possibility of a weekend meet-up at some point - I work Sundays mornings and sometimes in the afternoon or evening too. For that matter, sometimes I work Saturdays too! But not always. Would definitely be easier to go to one of these free places, or to do a hike or something, on the weekend, if we could figure out a time that works for most people. We'd need input especially from parents...

Also in case you missed it, CMC2018 has been renamed as CM*TO since our CMC name is now being applied to other events.

in First Canadian Place (BMO) in the PATH level, around the corner adjacent to the LCBO there are nice round soft seats in a (semi)circular setup. It is a raised platform by elevators.

If everything goes perfectly this week I might be able to meet at 11 or 1130, but I won't likely know until Tuesday evening, so don't make any plans based on me. I likely wouldn't be able to do the evening, as I will be busy talking to someone in return for money. (They get $200 cash, I get a salary and the client gets better ideas based on how people actually use their products, so it is win-win-win.)

WRT one of our wrap up discussions, I remembered another tactic - I decided I would ask one good question or made one good comment in each client meeting or meeting that included my boss that wasn't an all hands meeting. (I dislike most questions in all hands meetings and didn't want to be one of those people)

I like both locations. Was nice not to be squatting and a bit further north was handy for me in coming from suburbs. Central is also nice, and I usually combine with some other fun while out. So no strong preference from me

I'm definitely not free until mid-May... And things could be complicated until July. But I think that my Tuesday and Friday evenings will be free, and I know that my Wednesday free night always used to conflict with someone else's schedule.

I trimmed off about a pound of Very Fatty Meat, which I simmered with soy sauce (a bit like pork bellies). Then I rendered the rest for 2 big tubs of lard, a tub of crunchy pork fat, and some not-very-successful chicharon that we ended up adding to a stew and a pot of beans.
When I retire I'll devote myself to improving my chicharon skills...

For anyone in Toronto who has time Saturday Morning, James and I will be cycling through Toronto eastbound to Whitby. If you want to tag along for a km or 50, let me know. We move at the speed of a 10 yr old boy. Sometimes that's fast, but mostly its not. If you don't want to go the full distance, you can easily bail out at Rouge Hill GO station and hitch a ride back to Toronto on the train. Same thing in Whitby where the waterfront trail goes to the train station.
There is no extra fee to take a bike on the train.

I think is a great idea. I nostalgically remember reading this book when I was in university and so glad I read when I did even though at the time I had difficulty trying to translate some of the messages to my limited life experiences (ie. I saw calculating your hourly wage akin to beating a dead horse and a very depressing prospect but the life energy concept is something I still think about today).

Great meetup and turn out, nice to see so many people, new and familiar faces. With that size a meetup, we were almost too big for the spot in the PATH!
A few people suggested looking forward to a January meetup. Sounds like a good idea to me. I'll throw this message out to help get a conversation going about when and where works. There were suggestions for a meal, out at a restaurant or potluck, any other ideas?

Up north-ish, Markham museum is an open air museum (old buildings from when it was rural and not a suburb), open during the day, and I believe the admission price includes snow shoes to use around the property. They have snowshows for adults and kids. The admission sounds cheap compared to renting or buying snowshows. I don't know when there is enough snow accumulation to make this possible.
Threre is an indoor playground/gymnasium in Leslieville called sprouts. First visit is free (one free visit per family). Other spots like that?

I haven't been to Sprouts place but sounds like an option depending on kid ages. Another place I just recently went was Cherry Street YMCA. They have a great indoor play structure. I think non members can get a day pass or be guests (not sure how that works but I can find out) and they always have a non committal free 2 week trial for anyone that wants to scope out their facilities. The place is new, clean, and I'm told not too busy outside of afterschool and Sunday afternoon closures for birthdays.

I was able to get the room for Tue Jan 8. 👍 I need to double-check seating but estimate there's space for about 15 people to eat. There's also a stove, oven, and microwave for anything that needs re-heating.
I'll provide (paper) plates, (real) cutlery, napkins, (plastic) cups and some sort of slow-cooker main (haven't figured out what, yet, but want to leave the other appliances free for everyone else's use). So I can keep track of what we have and who will be there, please PM or post if you'll be coming! I figure I'll be in the room and setting up by 5:30pm (building kicks us out at 11pm). 😄

Following up on a couple topics we discussed that I had more info:
I asked my wife what the bank account opening bonuses were that she did in Canada last year. It was TD ($300 each person) and CIBC ($300 / person). They both seem expired now, but might pop back up. Anyone know of any active bank bonuses in Canada?
For Canadian credit card churning, she suggested the best sources of info were Red Flags Forum (https://forums.redflagdeals.com/credit-cards-f189/), check for posts by Jerry (see this thread (https://forums.redflagdeals.com/jerrys-list-credit-cards-200-welcome-bonus-aeroplan-amex-churning-faq-1685293/)) and that the Reddit Canadian Churning (https://www.reddit.com/r/churningcanada/) forum seems active again. This might be of interest to people in the GTA looking to break into the real estate market. OptionsForHomes is currently selling units in a Toronto development and helping people get into home ownership by boosting purchaser’s downpayments in the form a 2nd shared appreciation mortgage making it more accessible for homebuyers, but not investors that don’t plan on living in the units. Basically, if you are actually going to live in the unit, your purchase price/mortgage amount could be based on 80% of the value of the unit with up to 15% held by the developer in addition to a minimum downpayment of 5% from the purchaser. When you eventually sell down the road the developer gets back the original 15% plus 15% of the appreciation if you take the help from them.
Seems like a pretty community oriented build, discouraging investors and banning smoking etc.

As an alternative to our usual pattern of hanging out in the PATH system, I've made a call to the Toronto Mission to Seafarers to see if they could use extra hands at their facility for an evening. The Seafarers mission gives a hand to the crews that come through the Port of Toronto - many of whom have been away from home for an extended period, working in often ghastly conditions, with language, health, and nutrition issues in a foreign country. It just so happens to be that the Toronto Mission is one of the freshest/hippest/craziest ones and they might could use extra hands putting together care packages or something. Leaving on October 20th, unfortunately. And might be taking a little trip to D.C on Oct 1-6.

I realize daytime isn’t great for most people but I could do Fri the 11th or 18th during the day or maybe Mon the 7th/Tue the 8th during the day. This could be a different thing to keep the potluck as an evening event people can more easily make.
