Topeka, KS
« on: August 09, 2013, 08:40:03 AM »
Judging from the obesity rate and sparse number of bike shops, it seems that I may be the only Mustache in the great capital city of Topeka, Kansas. The cost of living is low, wages are decent, and you can always see the sun set over the wheat fields. Anyone else out there?

We are in Overbrook, but work in Topeka.  Topeka is not very good for biking.  When we used to live in town, we would bike to work sometimes.  The bus system is alright too if you have stops near you.

Topeka... home of the Laffer Curve in action experiment.
I was speculating on biking to work with my husband.  His response was only if I started carrying a gun.  Guess we have a long way to go to get him converted.

On the other hand, there are several houses for sale in a 5 block radius of his new work that are insanely cheap.  Also in the area where I would bike though that makes him want me to be able to protect myself.

Is this way out of line, or is it really that dangerous in the area by the hospital?

AuntBecky, I think it depends on the time of day.  I don't think that is the worst area of town.  I'm not sure about a gun, but pepper spray and a phone would be good just in case.

Glad to see another Topekan on the forums. Where do you live/work? I live just North of Topeka and work downtown.

I would be down for a meetup. Its getting warmer so I will throw out some Ideas.

  • Outdoor patio alcoholic refreshments at a cheap beer night.

Fishing Grilling at Lake Shawnee (would like to learn to catch dinner!)

    Happy Hour somewhere local.

Shawnee county library is beautiful as well

I had friends in the Wichita area when I was in the States and I think many of them still live there. I'll probably make it back someday.

I grew up North of Topeka and my mom lives there now.  I am periodically in the area.  It is not a bad place to be - pretty good wages and housing isn't bad at all.  If it ever worked out there was an event when I am visiting, I would love to drop in.

I'm in western Kansas! Probably too far to drive for a meet-up, but I feel good now knowing there are some other Kansans!

Topeka people still interested in a meetup?  Blind Tiger has a nice deck and $1 off beer Mondays.  Blue Moose has great happy hour specials.  Grilling would be fun at Lake Shawnee.  I don't think I would eat fish out of there, but I know some other great fishing spots.
