St. Louis Meetup -- MAY 10 -- Forest Park!
« on: April 10, 2014, 05:12:21 PM »
WHEN:
Saturday, April 26. 12:00pm to at least 4:00pm
Saturday, May 10. 12:00pm to at least 4:00pm

WHERE:
Forest Park.  We have one of the best parks of any city and the weather is getting very nice. I'll add specifics about the location (maybe by the jewel box (very easy to park) or on the hill near the art museum (harder to park), or maybe the best would be on the north end of the park near the metrolink station) and how to identify the group.

I will figure out and add a backup location for if the forecast turns into rain as the date approaches.

WHAT TO BRING:
Just yourself. You might want to bring a blanket or two for people to sit on. Or folding lawn chairs.

I will bring some water, cups, light snacks (fruit and such), and maybe a bottle of rum and some coke and ice for the adventurous ones.

PLEASE POST IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN COMING so we have an idea of how many attendees to expect, and to encourage others to come.

I went to an ERE meetup in Chicago and it was a blast. It's one thing to read posts on a forum, and anther thing to be able to relate to similar people in person. You're able to discuss topics in a much more fluid and sometimes in-depth way than on forum threads.

It looks like there are a fair number of St Louis forum members (Over 20 just from searching "St Louis" and the map, surely there are even more, and some more from the ERE forum) I will be PM'ing them a link to this thread.

I'm interested in this but I can't make it.  Going camping and mushroom hunting that weekend.  If you schedule another one I will try to make it.

Thanks for the invitation.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to make it due to a prior commitment, but I'm definitely up for a meetup sometime. I could also make it during the week after work (the last week in April or later) if that's a better day/time for everyone.

So far we only have two people saying they can come, and one maybe. I'm thinking about moving the date out (maybe to May 10).

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Reminder! This is next Saturday. Looks like the weather will be good. May be cloudy but very low chance of rain at this point.

Details coming on exact location. This WILL be happening no matter how many people confirm (even if zero confirm here)

St. Louis Meetup - Thanksgiving Weekend 2014

@ arebelspy, since you're the guest of honor, what time and venue type would you prefer? I'd be more likely to make a later evening event after the kids are asleep on Friday (11/28) or Saturday (11/29), so likely indoors somewhere around 8:00. If that doesn't work for everyone else I will try to make something else work.

I don't know the area, obviously, so I'm good with whatever.  Friday or Saturday evening is fine with me (I think the former would work slightly better) if the evening works better for you all.

What's your public transportation like?  You have a metro or anything?

I will be staying at a place about a mile south of Tower Grove Park (if you google that you should see where it is in relation to the rest of the city).

Public transportation here is no bueno in general, but I will be your chouffer if need be Rebs. Friday is now out for me without pulling some big strings, but Saturday evening is slated for this meetup in my household. It sounds like that was option 1b for you, but if it works let's make it Saturday, 8 PM, location TBD shortly.

I'm thinking either a low key pub/brewery, or a private little bakery I have in mind that should be closed but I know some people there. If it's the latter I could swing some coffee and dessert, then maybe a bring your own drinks/snacks.

I'll circle back after I determine location. I'm open to requests from anyone planning to attend.

Civil Live Brewery is quality (My #2 behind Urban Chestnut) and would be right in the area of a mile south of TGP if you want to do brewery.  I've only been there when the beer garden was open so I have no idea how packed it is inside during the winter.  There is also Perennial which is further south but they don't serve food and welcome food brought in if you want to do a brewery a bit more mustachian.  I can also put out some feelers from friends in the city of where some good, low-key places would be.

A mile south of TGP is right in the middle of my rental properties if you're interested in a tour and seeing what is available in St. Louis as I know Reb is into real estate and Cheddar has expressed an interest getting into it more.

Cool, I'd love that!  Maybe we could do something Saturday before the meetup and then head to wherever the meetup is?

..suddenly part of this trip may be a business expense!  ;)

I was thinking Civil Life as well but I haven't been yet. http://www.thecivillife.com/

I've enjoyed their beer, and the atmosphere seems cool based on website, but I don't know what a Saturday Night would be like there, and they are only open until 10 which might be too short given our 8 pm start time. I was trying to think more mustachian as well but my other thought is falling through. Let's make Civil Life our tentative plan.

Ditto on the real estate tour, I had the same thought. Maybe we can do both if it's just us three in attendance.

Yeah, not me. I didn't want to be the one to bring this up because I loathe fear mongering and speculation, but at least be aware Rebs you might be coming at the worst possible time. If you haven't paid any attention to this and don't care to follow the drama, here's the summary:

National Guard on alert
Potential unrest over indictment/non-indictment verdict from August Ferguson shooting coming sometime
Unbelievable amounts of fear and speculation

Just be aware of your surroundings and you should be fine. Or if you want to follow the herd, stock up on everything you can while you are still allowed outside. Oh, and of course go get a gun: http://news.yahoo.com/gun-sales-surge-ahead-jurys-ferguson-decision-060756956.html

I don't mean to make light of the situation. People's lives were forever altered, and some still may be, I just don't understand the frantic prepper mentality.

Meh, people prep over everything.  It was just over a year ago preppers were out due to the government shutdown.  You can pretty safely ignore preppers.

I have heard about the Ferguson case, I didn't realize that was nearby.  I'm not too worried.

Ferguson is a solid 15 miles from where you're staying. But protests and violence weren't isolated in August and many people are expecting the worst is still to come.

No one knows what will happen.

But that other kid who got killed by the police, that happened just a few blocks north of Tower Grove Park.  I know that area and along Grand had protesting.  There are some real shady areas south of Tower Grove Park, too.  Now I lived in TGS for 7-8 years until March of 2013.  There are a lot of great things in that area, but there are pockets of real bad areas with violent crime too.

And now the lawyer for that other kid who was shot is stirring things up in the media:

http://www.stltoday.com/news/local/crime-and-courts/lawyer-identifies-st-louis-officer-who-killed-vonderrit-myers-jr/article_47600cab-5fdb-53d4-bb11-9ced3090263a.html

I don't think anyone truly knows what is going to happen.  I'm not worried about it as I now live in St. Charles and work in Creve Coeur.  So, I won't really be going into (likely) affected areas.  I do have concert tickets to Off Broadway for the night after Thanksgiving.  If worst case scenario happens, and it becomes open season on whitey for a while, I will skip out on that.  I don't see that happen, but you never know.

Looks like we may now have the ebola too.

Since it gets dark so early, I probably can't do a tour while it's light out, I would be able to meet earlier than 8pm and do a little real estate tour if anybody is interested.

Ferguson is a solid 15 miles from where you're staying. But protests and violence weren't isolated in August and many people are expecting the worst is still to come.

But Vonderrit Myers, an black teen who shot at a police office and who died when the cop shot back, has a shrine in the Shaw neighborhood where he died. This happened soon after Michale Brown was shot by a police officer up in Ferguson, a suburb north of St. Louis city.  I live near Shaw. Missouri Botanical Gardens on Shaw Ave.  is on "the list" of places where ch*t may hit the fan.

But I don't mean this as a disincentive, come on in. I live here and I don't plan to leave during the upcoming troubles.

I have some friends who love Civil Life so I've been there a bunch. It's a popular place and the inside is small, so it gets pretty packed on the weekends, especially when you can't/ don't want to go outside. There have been times that we planned on going with a small group and immediately left because it was too crowded. To throw out another suggestion, the new Urban Chestnut in the grove (4465 Manchester Ave, ~3 mi north of Civil Life) is massive. Space and 10pm closing time would not be an issue.

I live in STL but I'll be out of town for Thanksgiving. Unsure whether I'll be back in time to make it to the meetup.

I still plan to be at the Civil Life at 8 pm, and I hope to see a few of you there. If there is real estate tour before hand let me know and I'll try to join in. Rebs, if you need a ride send me a PM for location.

Looking forward to it.

Nice, that's a perfect location for me, a half mile from where I'm staying, so I can just walk over.

Would love to do any RE stuff earlier, too.  Curious especially on the rents in this neighborhood.

Civil Life is owned by Jake Haefner who had a successful wine bar in my 'nabe for several years. He's is such a doll! He just recently got married.

You guys have fun, and drink beer!

If we audible to a place part of Small Business Saturday (an AmEx promotion) we can each get $10 off our bill, which if we split it and end up with just over $10 each means American Express will be paying for our meet up. ;)

Any places participating in SBS that might be a good fit?

There is a coffee shop MaKaBe's that is on the SBS list and not too far away.  It's in the South Grand area that is all boarded up right now so that makes me sad to look at.  There is Grbic, a Bosnian restaurant that is very close to Civil Life (approx 4 strange blocks to Meramec & Gravois) that has a ton of seating and has a great fireplace that is on the SBS list.  It's been awhile since I've been so the food was great but I can't speak to what they offer for food or beverage right now.  It has a lot of seating so we shouldn't get too many dirty looks on a Sat night like we might at other restaurants on the list.

I don't have AmEx so it doesn't matter to me.  Civil Life is cash only though.

Not expressing an opinion on venue, but IMO South Grand gives a hopeful and optimistic vibe with all of the artwork on the boarded up windows- not sad at all.
