Seattle Travel: Feb 25, 2017
« on: December 30, 2016, 08:11:44 PM »
I will be in Seattle from Tuesday, Feb 21 - Saturday, Feb 25. There will be group meetups on the 24th and 25th, and quite a few forum folk will be flying in for a few days. Use this thread to coordinate flights/hotels/transportation.

The party continues in Portland on the 26th, if anyone wants to attend both.

PLAN OF THE MEETUP

Thursday, 23-Feb-2017

1600: Meet at Starbucks on the 40th floor of the Columbia Tower (701 5th Ave, Seattle)

ETA: Move from Starbucks, to happy hour, or dinner or, strolling downtown

1830: Los Lobos concert begins (216 Union Street, Seattle)

Friday 24-Feb-2017

ETA: Casual hanging out at Paul der Krake's apartment's clubouse (belltown, near space needle). If Paul's place falls through, we can use my apartment as a staging area, but we can't hang out all day because the place is tiny. Plus I won't be home and I don't trust MJ to keep you guys out of my stuff.

Activity ideas near Paul's: Space needle, Experence Music Project, wandering freely, Chihuly Garden and Glass Museum, Paific Science Museum, Pike Place.
Activity ideas near Reed's: Burke Gilman trail walk, Magneuson Park (dogs!), Metropolitan Market, the Sound Garden
Activities near no one: Ballard Locks, Museum of Flight, Seattle Aquarim, Seattle Great Wheel, Woodland Park Zoo, Greenlake

1700: Happy hour drinks and food at Double J. Saloon (12534 Lake City Way NE Seattle)

Other contenders that take large groups: Elliot Bay Brewery (12537 Lake City Way NE, Seattle), Cooper's Ale House (8065 Lake City Way NE Seattle), The Ram Brewery (University Village, 2650 NE University Village St, Seattle)

ETA: Rolling home drunk

Saturday 25-Feb-2017

1100: Meet at Olympic Sculpture Park (by big red giraffy sculpture). Walk the loop route up the waterfront, and back to Seattle Center

1200-ish: Lunch at Center House (brown bag for those who want)

After Lunch: individual tourist activities, as desired. See 'Activity ideas near Paul's' for nearby locations.

Thanks for starting this, MJ.

I will be flying into Seattle at 2pm on 2/23 and will be flying out at 3pm on 2/26.  Looking forward to seeing a couple MMMers I already know plus meeting many more!

I have a reservation at the Westin, and will be sharing a room with Jessa.

Thanks for making this, MJ. I'll try to confirm flight times tomorrow and then worry about the rest later. Not too worried about figuring everything else out in advance. If I speak the language and have a credit card, that's enough for me to feel adequately prepared.

Thanks for offering to play hostess, lhamo!

I had originally said the meetup would be on Saturday, which I think we can still do for people who might only be able to make one of the dates. But in any announcement, we should reference that both Friday and Saturday are still happening, so nobody gets confused.

No real occasion. I decided to take an impulse trip to visit some forum friends, and it snowballed.

Come say hi!

Yeah, 94 started stalking MJ, and I started stalking 94, and there are like, ninety billion forumites who live in the greater PNW area that were like, YEAH DUDE, LET'S DO IT!

Also, i fly into Seattle on the 23rd at 12:11 (noonish) and fly out at 1pm on Sunday the 26th.

I'm SO excited for this :) :) :)

I'm trying to decide if I'll take the day off work on Friday or come after work. And if I'll take the train or drive. And if I'll stay overnight or come home. Well, I guess I've got some time to figure it all out.  Thanks for hosting us, lhamo!

I'm arriving on the 23rd at 2:20pm.
Leaving 26th at 2:50pm.

Exciting!

I'll plan for the hostel at the moment but if anyone wants to share AirBnB or hotel let's discuss it.

Hi hepster! There will be a potluck lunch on the 26th at 2 PM. If you join the FB group called "MMM Potluck Group" and mark that you're attending the event, the address will be sent to you closer to the actual date.

Even in my post-holidays Ihatepeoplesomuchgetawayfromme mood I'm excited about this. I will definitely be attending on both the 25th and 26th. lhamo, closer to the day I'm going to have to get your address so I can look up bus schedules.

I will not be bringing the Demon Child to your apartment. You're welcome. :) I'll save her for whatever's happening on the 26th.

Also, a potluck MMM meetup sounds like just about the most Portland thing ever. Will you be putting birds on your dishes?

Whoohoo!

The Seattle meets are 24-25, not 25-26. PDX is 26.

Hi everyone!

This is my first time posting here, but if anyone would like to come crash at my place in Capitol Hill in Seattle let me know.
I'll be working on the 24th but will be around on the 25th.

Cheers!

I also have a spare futon I'll put out there. PM if you want more details.

I'm just south of Cap Hill, between the International & Central Districts in what was recently tagged as the city's most liberal neighborhood, so there must be some MMM fans nearby.

I like the 9/25 plan because it's also close to Pike Place, so if anyone wants to take in some of the most iconic stuff in Seattle that would be fairly easy to do. Also, they have amazing mini-doughnuts for cheap. :)

Welcome input from other Seattle area folk on how to make this an awesome weekend for the MMM crew -- I don't need to be planning czar, so feel free to weigh in!

It's nice to have a planning czar, though, 'cos then I can just show up do stuff and not have to think.

I think I'm in too.  Seattle is a drive down the I-5 for me and I'd really like to meet some MMM people in person.  I could ask for Friday, Feb 24 off at work and drive down in the morning.  Then stay over night in a hotel/motel near where the Friday evening meet up will be.

I've PM'd MonkeyJenga for details.

The olympic sculpture park also has a nice trail that goes North with spectacular views of the mountain range. Highly recommended if anyone needs a workout route from downtown. I run there every other day or so.

I can also shuttle people to/from the Belltown/Queen Anne  area, let me know if you're going to be around there.

Will do, MJ.   I am getting a bit ahead of myself, since i still have to check at work if I can get the 24th off.

But anyway, is there a neighbourhood in particular where the Friday meetup will be held.  I'd like to get a hotel/motel close in that area.

Thanks to all involved.

I've just got a new job, start day is Feb. 15th. Training will be intense over the first couple weeks, so we'll see how well I can get my ass down to Seattle. Picking up a new quite un-mustachian car tomorrow as well that very easily can haul 4 adults around town. If anyone needs a ride that weekend, I'll be happy to help!

I just pulled up the map to see where everything is in relationship to the hostel.  I'm going to need detailed bus directions.  Well, I can usually figure out the bus, but any help will be appreciated.  Does the light rail go anyplace near there???   I may price out via points renting a car, but parking is an issue at the hostel, as in not free.  I plan to rent one for Sunday anyway and go check out my old haunts in Olympia.

I have been reminded on another thread that you poor Americans lack access to certain types of Canadian junk food. Sailor Sam has already requested chips. And I was hoping to only bring a backpack carry-on, so space is limited.

I have checked my ticket and for $25 I can bring a checked bag as well. So I put it out there, do you want me to bring you Canadian snacks? My cash flow is limited at the moment, so if you want items, I'd appreciate a few bucks (Canadian word for dollar, eh) to the cause. It's kind of an all or nothing proposition. If only a few people want a couple things, I can fit some in my carry-on, and it can be a gift. However if a bunch of people want a lot of stuff I can go to Costco and fill a suitcase, but will need some reimbursement.

So, let me know if you want anything. Please try to tell me the specific brand of Canadian chocolate bar you desire, or other product, as I really don't know what you can get here vs. there.

yeah, I was surprised about the chocolate bars but I guess we have some British stuff that you guys might not.

When I was a little girl (in the 70's), we often visited my great uncle who lived near the border by Peace Arch crossing.  His daughter who was ten years older than me had her driver's licence and would take me and my little brother over the line into Blaine to buy American chocolate bars.  I remember one was called "Idaho Spud".

I am looking forward to checking out your chocolate bars too.   :)
