Thanks GS (and our gracious hosts) for a great meetup on Saturday!

I think I recall someone asking about the Seattle-to-Portland bike ride. The event is in July, but registration for 2018 just opened yesterday:

https://cascade.org/rides-major-rides/kaiser-permanente-stp-presented-alaska-airlines

If you're interested, book now (tickets go pretty quickly).

Has everyone got their King County property tax assessments?  Mine went from about 3600 to 5400.  Can't believe it.

Might be time to sell.  I'm part time at work and am close to RE.  It's too expensive to keep if I'm out of town most of the time and too expensive to rent (could maybe rent for $2200 but calculate the monthly expenses to be $1150, excluding one-off expenses like finding a renter, cleaning, and repairs).

Yep -- there was a big bump this year due to the McCleary school funding issues. In general, property taxes will probably keep going up, but I think the significant bump this year is an anomaly.

Seattle Times had an article on this a couple of weeks ago:
https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/king-county-property-taxes-rising-between-9-and-31-percent-depending-on-your-city/

Property tax bills headed for King County households this month will show big increases that vary widely city by city, according to a new breakdown by King County Assessor John Wilson.

Countywide, the 2018 property tax bills will be 17 percent higher on average than last year’s — due in large part to a school-funding plan approved by the state Legislature and Gov. Jay Inslee last year. That plan, to comply with a state Supreme Court ruling known as the McCleary decision, raised the state property tax rate by $1.01 per $1,000 of assessed valuation, the assessor’s office said.

Bailey Stober, a spokesman for the assessor, said Tuesday the 2018 boost is “the largest property-tax increase in King County in modern history.”

In its new breakdown, the assessor’s office is publicizing the expected tax increases in nearly 40 cities and towns.

The small town of Carnation will see the largest spike, with the tax on the median-assessed-value property ($379,000) rising 31 percent, or more than $1,000, compared with the median property last year.

Normandy Park will get the smallest percentage increase, 9 percent, with taxes for the median-valued home ($559,000) rising nearly $670.

Other cities fall somewhere in the middle. Seattle’s tax increase will be 16.9 percent, so the owner of a median-valued home ($597,000) in the state’s largest city will pay about $825 more than the owner of a median-valued home last year.

In Bellevue, the increase will be 21.6 percent, with the owner of a median-valued home ($791,000) paying $1,300 more than the owner of a median-valued home last year.

If it makes you feel any better, my property taxes in Chelan County also bumped up by about 14%. My neighbor's tax rate increased by 36% this year according to public records, which is similar to many other properties in the neighborhood. This appears to be related to the value of the improvements/structures (mine are very modest in comparison).

I guess I got hit with the double whammy of the tax increase + a pretty major bump in valuation despite no improvements being made.

I'm curious if there are other folks from Seattle who plan to return to a local rural area when they retire? And if so, where are you thinking of going?

I grew up on a farm and while I have definitely come to appreciate the luxuries of everything being in walking distance I know that the right thing for me will be to return to an area where I can have some land. I want to grow all my own potatoes and a million flowers, not full scale farming, but a lot more than my current shaded garden plot allows.

Any chance there is a PNW town that is already being taken over by mustachians? :)

Let's meet again in April. Since it's tax season, I pushed the meetup back until after taxes are due.

When? April 28th, 1-4pm
Where? Wallingford Playfield (https://goo.gl/maps/kns1qTgwEKt), but a fallback of CRD Design Build (https://goo.gl/maps/DjyNZPbUtXm) if the weather is bad (hopefully it's not!)

[edit 2018-04-27 @7:22pm ] We won't be able to use CRD Design Build as a fallback

Like always, I've cross-posted the event on the facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/events/885781311602288/

Hope to see you all there!

My wife and I have been looking at property in Bellingham. We each lived there at different points in our lives (her for undergrad, and me during a gap year). We have great friends in Bellingham and like the access to outdoor activities. I've been looking for rental properties so someone else can start paying our mortgage in the town. It seems that you can get a good house in the 400s, which may be expensive by much of the standards in the US, but seems very reasonable in comparison to Seattle.

Do you have any other candidate sites?

What do people do during these meetups? I live nearby, and I'm interested in meeting fellow FI literate people. Or, I suppose, seeing if any of my existing friends show up :)

Hi SeaWA.

It's pretty much like the forums, only in person *. Mostly it's a mixture of introductions, asking questions, and sharing success stories (and a sometimes a little bitching about work ;-)). Very casual -- there're no big presentations or anything.

I like it because it lets me put faces to people. That said, many of the folks lately have come from the Facebook group and aren't on the forum. Still a great way to meet fellow Mustachians.

* Although fortunately, I don't think there's been any real-life flame-wars, yet.

Hey everyone!

I have just moved to Seattle area from Prague. I am reading MMM for over a year already and would love to meet up with some like minded people. The link to the Facebook event doesn't work for me. I get an error message that the content is not available right now. Is there any fb group to join?

Has everyone got their King County property tax assessments?  Mine went from about 3600 to 5400.  Can't believe it.

Might be time to sell.  I'm part time at work and am close to RE.

You guys all know that retired Washington mustachians don't have to pay property taxes, right?  If your combined household income is under $57k, you can defer your property taxes until you sell your home.  They accrue interest in the interim, but you're not paying it so what does it matter?

Details are under the "Limited Income" tab:  https://dor.wa.gov/find-taxes-rates/property-tax/property-tax-exemptions-and-deferrals

And once you're 61, you get some dramatic tax breaks if you have an income under $40k. It doesn't even need to be repaid once you or your heirs sell the house. The woman we bought our first house from was on that program at the time and she was paying a quarter of the standard rate.

Combine all this with a lack of state income tax while you're in your higher-earning years and building your stash, and it's really quite a nice situation for Mustachians.

Capitalistic swine, indeed. Yes, I do my best to keep things cross-posted :) There's not much you miss on facebook. An occasional post here and there; so far no other meetups except the ones that I've been organizing (makes my job of cross posting is pretty easy)

Speaking of meetups (next one is tomorrow if you haven't heard: https://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/meetups-and-social-events/seattle-area-meet-up/msg1939548/#msg1939548),

1) I won't be able to make the meetup tomorrow (sucks, but I hope everyone else that goes has fun)
2) We won't be able to use CRD Design Build as a fallback this time in case of rain. I have been assured, however, that there is a lovely gazebo in Wallingford park that can act as a shelter in case the weather turns nasty.

Hello Seattleites!  Gray Matter and 94 will be in Seattle next week and are available for a casual meet-up on Friday evening (May 18) if anyone is interested.

We're staying in the Belltown area and have no knowledge of good meet-up spots, but are willing to travel by foot or public transportation is someone has a recommendation.

Hello!

We wouldn't mind hanging out with some fellow mustachians this Friday. If the weather is nice, I'd like to suggest Myrtle Edwards park. I think the three rocks could make a good meeting spot.

For anyone interested in a casual meet-up tomorrow, Friday, May 18 in Seattle, 94 and I will be at Olympic Sculpture Park at 6 pm.  We'll be standing conspicuously by the big white head (Echo statue) where Broadstreet meets Alaskan Way.  From there, we can decide if we want to take a walk in Myrtle Edwards Park or go for a beer or...?

If we change locations, we'll post an update here.

Hope to see you (someone!  anyone!) there.

To make us easier to recognize, there's two of us: a 5' asian girl and a 6'1" white guy with long curly hair.

It was fantastic meeting @bandk last night!  Such an interesting couple--living the dream mustachian life in Seattle!  I sure hope you start a journal and share your story with all of us as you head toward FIRE!  :-)

Wish I could have made it, but 6 is too close to Annabelle's bedtime (of 6:45) when the place was 30min away (we'd have had to be there from 6-6:15, then leave).

5pm (or earlier, like afternoon) tends to work better for us.

How long are you two in town for?

Hello Everyone! I'm Gwen, co-host of Fire Drill Podcast. My awesome co-host J and I were going to attend the usual Thursday-before-Camp Mustache-meetup with Mr. Money Mustache, but he won't be here until Friday this year! :( So, J and I are taking up the mantle and hosting a meetup Thursday, May 24th in Gas Works Park at 730 pm. We'll be on top of the big hill next to the big metal thingies. If it gets weathery or dark, we'll relocate to a nearby brewery (or something). Hope to see a few Mustachians out there!

GM and I both left Seattle yesterday.  :(

I will be back up there in August as I drive up to Canada, so I would like to try to see some Seattle peeps again at that point.  Don't know where you'll be at that time, Rebel.  If I don't see you then, looks like I will see you at CM*TO in September!

Yes!  See: https://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/meetups-and-social-events/vancouverseattle-camping-meetup-june-910-2018-(bellingham-washington)/
Oh right, I remember seeing that. I'm actually camping that weekend too, but with a different group of friends so I won't get a chance to go.

Martin Way Mobile Home Park.  It is south of Seattle by a bit, maybe an hour depending on traffic.  It is just west of Marvin Rd on Martin Way, which is just off the I5.  There is the train to get to SeaTac, I believe.  I used a shuttle service when I lived there, not cheap but doable.  I lived there 10 years ago when I worked at the Post.  There are a few other smaller parks in the area.  A Costco in sight, and grocery stores in walking distance.  Not far at all from the Sound. with a nice State Park on the water just up Marvin Road on the other side of I5.  It is a 55+ park, but they gave me some lattitude as I had just turned 54.  A lot depends on how full they are, I think.  Current reviews are mostly ok.  Lacey is between Tacoma and Olympia, literally each is a couple of Interstate exits each way.
