So I just learned that whole foods (at least, the one in Monterey) has stopped selling bulk spices. Does anyone know another good place to buy spices by weight?

I get them at Staff of Life in Santa Cruz; they have a great selection of bulk spices and grains, and prices tend to be lower than Whole Foods. If you're in Monterey, I would try some of the ethnic stores either there or in Marina for spices - they aren't in bulk, but they tend to be quite a bit less expensive.

There's a Ragtime Music fest in Santa Cruz today and tomorrow. Looks like there might be free music at the corner of Pacific and Cooper. Gonna check it out this afternoon!

I don't know if this fits anyone's bill for entertainment, but the naval academy glee club is in the SF area doing a few free shows. I've heard them and found them to be pretty decent. Anyway, I attached a screenshot of a pdf because I can't figure out how to get an image into my post.

I would be down except that I'm probably going to have my baby in the next week or two :D If it happens before then, I'm there! Maybe a BBQ or picnic in a park somewhere, or another game night? Both were really fun!

I'm down for another event; it's been too long. Weekends are preferable, though not until mid-September, which is probably bad for Mrs. Whipple.  Any particular dates? As a suggestion, I like doing stuff like this; these are on September 11 or 25, but there are often other events there and at other parks. Anyone else interested in joining something like that, or just meeting after for picnic? I missed the game night, that sounded fun as well.

And congrats Mrs (and Mr.) Whipple!

The "Gardens of Time" Tour looks neat- would love to meet up for that! Both of those dates would work for me.

I'm also down to host another potluck/game night or head out on a hike!

Sorry for the delayed response, I was waiting to see about a potential conflict on the 25th. I could go on this tour on the 11th, but not the 25th.

Hi all. I just joined after learning that AlwaysBeenASaver -- whom I've known for what, 25 years? -- was a fellow Mustachian! I hope I can join the next meetup. (Probably won't be available if it's the 8th.)

I live in unincorporated Santa Cruz and am married with a teenage son.

I know the BAMMM group may be too far for many in the Santa Cruz / Salinas / Monterey area, but I'd at least like to make the Mustachians in that area aware of a Reddit thread I created for the Bay Area:

Trying to revive this thread a bit. Anyone still in this area of dastardly high priced housing?

I feel you. I keep choking whenever I pay rent, and then I walk 20 minutes to the beach in 60 degree January weather and remember why I haven't left....

Anyone want to come to Henry Cowell to do some pine needle basket weaving? I've been to a few of the classes, and it's super fun! I'll probably be going to both of the December ones:
Saturday, December 2 from 10am to noon
Saturday, December 9 from 1pm to 3pm
Join Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park Docent Cheryl VanDeVeer or a fun, free, family workshop learning how to make a basket from local pine needles. Children 10 and older may attend if accompanied by an adult. Meet at the Visitor Center in the day-use area, located off Highway 9 in Felton. No experience necessary.

If anyone needs a ride into the park, we have the parking pass and can pick you up at the entrance where there's free parking. Just PM me and let me know!

Basket weaving this Saturday at 1pm! Be there or be a lame non-basket weaver ;) This is the last February basket thing.

Also has anyone gone up to see the elephant seals? You have to reserve a spot on a tour and it's like a couple hours of walking/tour. Anyone interested in doing a meet up and going to see them?

We'll plan two hikes then. One on Sunday, July 22nd at 10am and another in mid to late September.

@MrsWhipple do you have a suggestion for meeting place and hiking trail?

The Pipeline hike is nice and shady and we can stop at the observation bench. Probably 1.5/2 hours if we linger at the top. We could meet outside the gift shop that's right by the parking lot, and if anybody needs a ride in (it's $10 unless you park outside the park or have a pass), we could carpool from my place.

Mark your calendars: Sunday, September 23rd we'll have another hike.

Suggest a favorite place if you'd like to join us. Maybe as it's autumn equinox we could hike at Fall Creek.

I appreciate the invite Vasilisa! My family no longer lives in California. We moved away in March 2017 when my wife retired. I retired 6 months later in September 2017.

Escaping the oppressive housing prices in coastal California was key to being able to retire as soon as we did. Ages 31 (almost 32) and just having turned 37 respectively.

I hope your hikes in July and September end up being well attended, inspiring, and uplifting social events.
