This one time, in Belleville...Do 2 people count as an official meet-up? If yes, yes. But Belleville is only relatively close compared to Vancouver Island, it is a major drive. Ottawa I pop into all the time.
Of course if it ends up being oneyearfromnow and me that will be my second 2 people meetup - no, I had a 2 people meetup in Victoria, so my 3rd.

Sometimes I think that people in Ottawa are a little shy about meeting up. I understand. Maritimers can be a bit overwhelming. The husband is mostly from Ottawa (with a Saskatchwan interlude).
My first week here in Ottawa (true facts) - I invited a new co-worker over for tea, and by the look on their face - you'd think I'd asked them to participate in some strange "lifestyle". For pete's sake...It is tea, and conversation!

I am hereby offering to host a BBQ on either of those evenings after 5 PM; thinking simple food and some drinks. I live in a shared house with students, so fair warning it'll look 'student-y', but if everyone's OK with that, then reply with your preferred night and I'll PM you address details. Also PM with any dietary restrictions or allergies; I was thinking some BBQ chicken drumsticks or pork loin, with asking other people to provide side dishes ('slaw? salad?). I've got some homemade dandelion wine, but it was a partial ferment- so sweet as hell. Still alcoholic, but more like a cordial than true booze.
Otherwise, if someone else would prefer to host, feel free to reply in the thread with your proposed time and date. Looking forward to meeting anyone available/interested!

There is no bad weather, just the wrong clothing. Think of it - hot chocolate and food on a wood stove in gatineau park! Or easy trails near the river on a great community built resource!
But warm is good to. It's been YEARS since I've played rock band. That's a great game! Surprisingly little musical talent required.

That sounds like a ton of fun! My family was thinking of going to the Sens game outdoors but decided not worth the cost. This would be way better! Now to fit it around our plans...

Fair enough.
I’m going in to it with fairly low expectations. The view won’t be great since the stands are so far away from the actual rink but I figure it’s worth it for the novelty of it all.

No pets. Just two toddlers (maybe 4 if Reggie brings his kids) that I hope will cooperate with us :) They're pretty good if their promised a movie and popcorn and they're usually asleep by 8. (fingers crossed).
Let me know who's in and what time works best for all. I can send out me address to those interested. I'll have red wine and a few snacks. I have a small selection of games we can play but you're welcome to bring some if you have ones you would like to play.

Just FYI, a company called ontario home protection is selling carbon offset programs door to door, at the price od 25$/month for 60 months, and trying to lie and tell you that you will receive electricity credits for 45$ which will more than cover it. This is a flat out lie, as they are trying to pass off the OESP (electricity support program for low-income) as part of their program. The saleswoman lied to me multiple times and tried pressuring me into signing right now and taking care of the details after when they called.

I've recently returned to the forums after years away, after noticing I was FI when musing about my next career move in case my current job ends suddenly, which it could. I counted my pennies and realized my next career move could be to not have one any more, so I have come back to the forums and blogs to gather info and reassure myself that financially I am ready, whether it comes to that or not.
I'd love to meet some local frugal folks. I am a long-term Ottawa resident, but in recent years have been away a lot, working up in the arctic (where my "Bingeworker" moniker comes from) and spending time in the USA where my American husband was getting his PhD. We're full-time locals here now though, for the past year.
Glancing back at recent ideas, I'd like to propose a totally casual disorganized potluck in Andrew Haydon Park, which is on the bike path and not too far from transit (Bayshore station) if anyone is busing. I'm guessing weekends are the best for most of you? How would Saturday July 7 or Sunday July 8 work for people? Friday July 6 would also be fine. I work, but part-time (I semi-retired back in 1992 so I have been at this my whole adult life).
If anyone is interested, which day would be better for you, and is lunch or suppertime better?

If anyone wants to BBQ something, there are some BBQs that are usually not too busy at the west end of the park, right near the bridge over to Dick Bell Park, kind of tucked behind the little hill there, past the waterfall. We could maybe meet there, or meet near the bridge if those tables are already taken when we arrive?

Since the park is large, can you post a Google Satellite image of where that meeting point is?

But basically, when you look on google maps, we'll meet near the western edge of the park. At the western boundary is a creek with a bridge across it that goes to the sailing club at Dick Bell Park. On the eastern side of the creek, there are some picnic tables and BBQs a little south of the path, on the other side of a little landscaped ridge, so we can meet there if the tables are free, but if not, we can meet near the bridge and go find a table or other spot from there. I can carry a card with a mustache on it, or place it on the table if one is free.
Before Saturday I can PM folks with a reminder and my cellphone number so that you can text me if you can't find the group. I think the rest of you know each other though, it's more likely that I will be the confused party milling about aimlessly and you will have to come rescue me!
The weather forecast is good, so hopefully we won't need to postpone for rain.

I would recommend using less than a whole bunch of green onions (2/3). I would also use more cilantro (1/2 cup).
But, personal taste!
Would be very easy to sub the chicken or tofu for the shrimp.

It is zucchini harvest time, and that means relish making time. If you haven’t tried my Grammie’s recipe yet, it does contain Mustard powder - but it isn’t mustardy. It is more a sweet/sour condiment. Excellent on a cheese sandwich, charcuterie boards, or on pork, chicken, or fish. Heck, it is excellent on a hotdog or hamburger too.
I am happy to share the recipe, and will need chopping skillz to assist.
This Saturday, Aug 11th, starting at noon @ my place. (If you can’t make it then - I could host a second date)
Let me know how much relish you’d like to take home (recipe makes about 16 cups) - I can purchase the veg. I have received an excellent supply of mason jars from a friends, as they were downsizing, so I may be able to front you some jars.
If you can’t come and would like a few bottles, or If you can come, and just want a couple of bottles - that is all OK too.
Based on numbers/ amount being made, how many sealing rings & caps the bottles need, I can come up with a price per cup.

If anyone is interested in the cost per the Mustard Pickle - it comes out to about $2 per 500 ml jar - not including electricity or time. Biggest part of the cost is the new sealing lid for the mason jar.
So, I'll be making some more tomorrow and/or Tuesday - $3 per 500 ml jar. This year's batch has more cauliflower in it - not that you'd notice :) PM me if you are interested in purchase.
Also - for those who are interested - Super Store is selling 25 lbs boxes of plum tomatoes for about $7.50. In a few days they may go to half price, but you may have a few more dodgy ones in the box. Peel, chop, freeze in baggies. We did two boxes yesterday - yielded 20 - 2 cup bags of chopped tomatoes, and 28 - 1 cup bags of plain tomato sauce. That is about $0.19 per 1 cup chopped tomato, and $0.27 per cup of prepared tomato sauce. Should last us almost a year.

Weather cooperating, I will be there.
So much for weather cooperating, if we are having freezing rain and snow I need to be at the house to keep the walkway clear and salted/sanded, or I won't be able to get into the house later. The forecast is 5-10 mm rain and then snow, ice pellets in there somewhere, what a mess.

Thanks to everyone for bringing something to the share table. It was lovely! A very eclectic selection of treats!
Tonight, in true MMM /Maritime form, I used up all of the cheese bits, and cracker bits, to make some kickbutt homemade Mac & Cheese.
In the Maritimes, we used to have something we called ‘old nippy’, or more commonly called ‘Rat trap cheese’. Of course this was a long time ago - but it is not unlike the cheese curds that were brought to the meetup. (tasty, stringy, cheesy). That and the other cheeses, and some cheddar, chili flake, and dry mustard powder, with a crunchy cracker tip, well.....3 portions for dinner, 7 for the freezer. Oh yeah!

Yep, all that sounds good. I'll do a screen capture of roughly where I think we should meet at Britannia from Google maps, and send it to you, and you can send it out to the e-mail list if you agree that it's a good spot.

Is there still a group size limit? I've been in groups of 8 that were reserved for more. Restaurants are hopping now, capacity limits are gone. But if we had a large group (unlikely for a weekday lunch), we can split in 2 tables.

I didn't know a lot of restaurants were closed at lunch right now. OYFN, if we are looking at Westboro/H-burg (I am open to other areas), do you have anywhere in mind? You know that scene pretty well. Ed and I love anything as long as it's food. I love schmancy (and that's where you often save a lot at lunch compared to dinner), but anything tasty where we can feel smug about lunch prices would work. Pubs are fine too.
Hopefully some others will join in once we start putting a plan together ...

I guess Millstreet looks better for us, due to the craft beer angle and Ed being a devotee, and the menu looks more interesting. Carleton is more frugal though, so we're fine with that if the mustachian impulse prevails.
Any preferences on date? If not, how about Thursday the 18th? Gives a bit of time for the other retirees to see the plan and join in. Ed's busy the 16th (and Lews said Tuesdays don't work for him anyway.)

Unfortunately I’m training 6 days a week for the Ottawa half-marathon at the end of May and I think I would struggle to fit in a long bike ride that day.

October could definitely work! I didn't have any particular date in mind, but weekends probably work best (sadly I haven't bought my freedom yet). I would create a poll with all the possible weekends, but it doesn't look like the poll option is there?
So far, unbelievably, I don't seem to have anything going on on any of the October weekends.
In terms of where, I'm thinking somewhere more in the center of the city would work best for the majority (I'm out in Kanata...but I doubt that works best for most people). I haven't been to one of the Ottawa Meetups before - having moved here just a few months before Covid hit - so I'll leave it up to those more experienced to pick the best place. 😊

There is supposed to be a pro-Gaza (but apparently specifically pro-Palestian) gathering at Human Rights Monument on Elgin by the city hall at 2pm. Take caution of protest and counter-protest.

It might not be a great weekend as it turns out to have a meetup anywhere - while the west end would work for me and Mr. Ed, lots of you come from other parts of the city and traffic has a history of going to hell the weekends that they do bridge replacements on the Queensway.
Most of the participants of this thread have been very silent lately as well ... maybe some others can chime in and say if they are still planning on going if a suitable place is found or if this weekend is not working out for multiple reasons.

I agree that the NAC would be a great spot!
Good idea to postpone, we were out and about last night - the Queensway & related roads were a disaster!
Unfortunately I have other plans for the 5th. I do hope that there is a great turnout though!

I'll add it to my calendar. We can figure out place/time closer to - I'll set a reminder in my phone for one week before to make sure not to forget (and maybe others will have decided before then).
