Anyone have a recommendation for a bank / credit union that will loan on a Coop, and/or a realtor friend that works in Jackson Heights ? Thanks!

In case anyone's up for a last-minute day hike on Saturday, 11/10 (sorry for the extremely short notice)
Meeting at Cold Spring, Metro North Station at 9:22am (Hudson Line)

We're doing a four-mile hike on Mt. Taurus (aka Bull Hill) near Cold Spring, NY.

 - The hike is classified as difficult with an elevation gain of about 1,350 feet.
 - Here's a link for a blogger's images and details of the hike: https://hikethehudsonvalley.com/hikes/bull-hill-mt-taurus/
 - Wear layers, plan for muddy trails, and pack a dry shirt for the way home.

We may do a similar hike soon, which I'll post more in advance.

For the meeting point at the Metro North railway station in Cold Spring, NY:

From Grand Central, train departs at 8:00am and arrives at 9:22am no transfers necessary ($29)
From Harlem 125th St, train departs at 8:11am and arrives at 9:22am, no transfers necessary ($29)
We will try to get hiking right away, so best to use the bathroom on the train!

Two group leaders will have cars at the train station to drive approximately 10 minutes to the trail head.
The hike will take approximately 3-3.5 hours and we will have several options afterwards:

Drive back to the train station to head home
Drive back into Cold Spring for lunch before departing

The trains out of Cold Spring are hourly (12:59pm, 2:01pm, 2:59pm, 4:03pm, etc), so if anyone needs to leave immediately after the hike, no problem and if anyone wants to stay and enjoy the coastal town of Cold Spring, no problem!

It looks like I’m seeing this a bit too late to join but I’ll stay tuned for the next one planned.

I'll be at the next BH meeting, but as of now, that location's owner recently told us they may need the space, so the date or location may change.

So, we may keep the 11/27 date at an alternate space, or find a date close to 11/27 at the current space.

More to come as info materializes.

We'll be doing the same Mt. Taurus hike near Cold Spring, NY again this Sat., 11/17.

Please see the recent related post above for details; times and meeting spots are the same.

Only update is the trailhead is a short walk from the train station.

Also, remember to bring water and snacks/food.

Here's a blog post covering the hike:

Also, appears the NYC Bogleheads meetup has been moved from 11/27/18 to 12/12/18, allowing for us to have our guest speaker in a space with good acoustics.

More info to follow.

Hello from Sunny Florida! I'm heading back to NYC mid February and wanted to see if people are interested in showing off their facial hair on Feb 16th or 17th in the Winter Garden Atrium in Brookfield Place mid-afternoonish?  Time and place are flexible depending on your schedules/predilection.

It was awesome meeting you guys yesterday.

For those who missed it, some of us will be doing the Great Saunter, a 12-hour walk around Manhattan, on Saturday May 4th. It's not free, but for $25 it's a pretty good value for your entertainment dollar.

There are three prep walks for the Great Saunter that I'll be doing if the weather is decent (and maybe even if it isn't). There is a $3 suggested donation for non-Shore Walks members.

Saunter Stretch #1 - 11 miles, 4/13
Saunter Stretch #2 - 11 miles, 4/20
Saunter Stretch #3 - 12 miles, 4/27

Also, does anybody want to do a regular sitting meetup again, like the Brookfield place meetup last month?

Join us for a free walking tour of the Brooklyn & Manhattan Bridges this Saturday, 3/16/19.
- Meets 9am at City Hall at the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge (exact spot later this week once the tour leader announces it)

Our guide will talk a little about the architecture and construction of the bridges and explore some of the neighborhoods bordering them.

Bring water, snacks, sneakers, layers including windbreaker, and sunglasses.

Optional lunch stop if the group is up for it.

Hey NYC mustache people. Going to be in your area the first ten days of August, was wondering if anyone would be up for a hangout, or meetup.
Hanging out in the park, beach, potluck, or walk all sound good.

For those interested in Stoicism, an amazing three-author panel this week:

Thur., 9/19/19, 6pm-8:30pm
NY Society for Ethical Culture
2 W 64th St, at Central Park West
https://www.meetup.com/New-York-City-Stoics/events/260670852/

Authors are:
1. Massimo Pigliucci, author of "How to be a Stoic" and the new "A Handbook for New Stoics: How to Thrive in a World Out of Your Control"   (more on Massimo at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Massimo_Pigliucci )
2. William Irvine, author of "The Stoic Challenge" and "A Guide to the Good Life"
3. Donald Robertson, author of "Stoicism and the Art of Happiness," "The Philosophy of CBT," "Build Your Resilience" and the new "How to Think Like a Roman Emperor: The Stoic Philosophy of Marcus Aurelius"

MMM's related post on Stoicism, citing William Irvine's book:

The next joint NYC Bogleheads-MMM meetup:

Date: Wed., 11/13/19, 6pm-7:30pm
Location: Capital One cafe building, 853 Broadway at 14th St, NY, NY 10003
Lower-level Community Room
(The street level is the Capital One Cafe. Walk to the interior glass door along the side wall where there's a staircase to go down to the lower level.)

We'll have a guest speaker: Massimo Pigliucci, Professor of Philosophy at CUNY - City College, with a 30-45 minute talk on Stoicism.   (more on Massimo at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Massimo_Pigliucci )

As many MMM readers know, Stoicism can be helpful when applied to personal finance and life in that it advises us to:
 - Focus on what is in our control;
 - Appreciate what we have more than feeling misery over what we don't have;
 - Focus on putting in your best effort rather than defining success by the outcome;
 - Focus on controlling our reaction rather than letting an outcome define our experience.

Hope to see you there-

We're still on for the BH-MMM meetup on Wed., 11/13, 6pm-7:30pm in the Union Square Capital One Cafe basement Community Room, featuring our guest speaker on Stoicism for the first 30-45 minutes.

Entirely separate from that, on Wed., 11/6, 6pm-7:30pm we're having a more-social FI / Bogleheads social, in a smaller room on the 2nd floor at the same Union Square Capital One Cafe.

For 11/6, our room on the 2nd floor is called The Blue Room and is just past the ATMs on the 2nd floor, to the left of the bank tellers (when you're directly facing the teller stations)

The Blue Room is smaller than our downstairs room, so depending on turnout, the space may be tight, but folks can spillover into the public lounge outside the Blue Room if needed.

What to expect? No structure.  You can chat more with other folks including some FI-minded folks.
Maybe board games and some potluck style food sharing (self-prepared or purchased)
Feel free to bring something you enjoy sharing.

Part of the goal is allowing for folks to more easily get to know one another and have fun doing that.

Hope to see you there.

Wow, the (excellent) stoicism presentation was over a month ago and it's been crickets in here since then! Anybody interested in a potluck (or alternative activity) early next year?

Potluck sounds great, count me in.

Also, for those who haven't seen coverage of this already:

Sunday, May 3rd is the Five Boro Bike Tour

https://www.bike.nyc/events/td-five-boro-bike-tour/

A fun ride to do at least once.
Note: it can get congested in spots so be prepared to walk your bike if needed.
I think they've improved timing waves of riders to reduce that congestion.

You can be a volunteer if you want to save on the Registration Fee.

So, you can walk the perimeter of Manhattan on Saturday, 5/2 then bike through all five boroughs on Sunday, 5/3.

I found this clarifying overall even if lots of its pieces are intuitive.
