Title: North Carolina
Post by: fire on February 23, 2012, 10:42:44 PM
I know I've seen a few other North Carolinians posting in the comments.  Anyone interested in a meetup around either the Triangle or the Triad?

We'll be in the Triad in June.

What's bringing you to High Point, Shedinator?

Wife and I lived there for 2 years (I did my undergrad at John Wesley College). I'm finishing up my Masters, and didn't get any PhD offers, so we decided to go ahead and move back to where we loved to live. The low cost of living doesn't hurt, either! We'll be able to live on my relatively low salary while I search for a job with a higher one.

Cool, I know what you mean about the lower cost of living.  I moved from DC and  it has certainly helped the 'stash.  Well, if we get any other interest in the meetup maybe we could meet somewhere in between us like Burlington or Graham.

A greater Carolinas meetup sounds like a great idea.

A greater Carolinas meetup sounds like a great idea.

There are quite a few SC folks posting so I'd agree with that sentiment. Charlotte might be a good midway location since it's a straight shot from the upstate and low country of SC with 85 and 77. It's about a 2-3 hour drive from the upstate, 1.5-2.5 from the mid-state, and 3.5 - 4.5 from the low country. From the RTP area of NC it's about 2.5 - 3, and from the coast it's going to be 4-6 depending where but anywhere will be long from the coast except RTP.

I'd like to go to a meetup in theory, but right now I work seven days a week, so I can't see myself making it. Hopefully I'll only a few more months of this schedule to kill the last of our non-mortgage debt.

I'm in Charlotte NC and would be interested in a meet up as well. I'm not completely sure what we'd all talk about but I'm sure it would be interesting. I'm just getting into this blog. In college my friends always thought I was frugal to the core, but I don't have anything on MMM or Jacob from ERE.

I'm all for a Carolinas meetup around Charlotte.  It's a pretty central location for anywhere in NC or SC as Somnambulist pointed out.  And we could always carpool there to maintain our mustachianism.

In college my friends always thought I was frugal to the core, but I don't have anything on MMM or Jacob from ERE.

That sums up my life pretty well, usps.  I've always been the cheap one of my friends but lots of people on MMM and ERE definitely put me to shame.

Camping?  Picnic?  Hang out at somebody's house and discuss our 'stashes?  I'm open to some mustachian suggestions.

Hi Karen.  It looks like you're right at the epicenter of the proposed meetup.  Any suggestions for things to do around Charlotte?
Title: Re: North Carolina
Post by: uspsfanalan on April 09, 2012, 09:28:48 PM
Charlotte has a lot of disc golf courses, those are free as long as you own a couple of discs and don't lose them. Mostly parks as far as free things go. It's almost like we'd have to have a book club or something to discuss. Maybe if there are enough people here in Charlotte we could work on a community garden or something of that nature. I'd love to be part of a tool sharing or work sharing group.

Symphony Sundays used to be free in Southpark area....really cool to take a picnic.  I think there may be similar activities at a park in Pineville with free music or movies on occasion near a small lake. It's a nice setting.  I'll start paying close attention to see if any other opportunities pop up!

I live fairly close to Pineville. I might even be able to bike to the meet up. I think once we post a time and a place we might have more people committing to the meet up.

I'm currently working full time and taking some accounting courses at CPCC. That wraps up within 3 weeks. After that I'd have more time and could make more of a firm committment.

Unfortunately, I'm out of town for a wedding on the 23rd. In DC for a small house building workshop on the 30th.

I think if you have 3 people can make a date you should go for it. The key thing is just to get started, I'll do my best to make the second meeting.

I will get on it pronto!  It's easier to find a good location knowing the date.  I'll check a few local entertainment resources and get back to you guys later today with a few suggestions.  Charlotte has a lot of free/ low cost options for a social event.

Hi everyone!  I didn't find anything specifically for June 30th in Charlotte (mostly browsing free movie, concert and cultural events).  I do know of a great free place to meet though....it's called Latta Nature Preserve.  It's part of Mecklenburg County parks and rec. This place has great picnic areas and hiking trails and is on a lake.  It might be a nice place to bring a picnic lunch and hang out.  Some of the trails follow the lakeshore and there is lots of shade too.  This is just an idea....it does get hot in Charlotte, so outdoors might not be ideal.  If anyone has any ideas about the type of place, general time of day, that might help too.  I can also check with some of the libraries for recommendations on meeting venues.
Title: Re: North Carolina
Post by: fire on June 06, 2012, 10:59:02 PM
Ooooo, the raptor center is in the Latta Nature Preserve too (although it's not free).  I think a picnic at the nature center sounds like a great idea.  Probably around noon or 1:00 would be good since some of us have a decent drive to get there.

fire and I will be carpooling from the Triangle on Saturday morning (leaving around 9ish), probably driving through Greensboro/High Point. Anyone else along that route who wants to join the pool is welcome!

Do we have a head count for the meetup? Sounds like it may be only 3...

I'm in.  Karen, what's the exact time and place?  And is there somewhere we can escape from the 105 degree weather on Saturday for at least part of the time?
Title: Re: North Carolina
Post by: carolinakaren on June 28, 2012, 08:04:36 PM
I think it's just the three of us.  I can meet you guys at whatever time is best, since your drive is the farthest. Noon is fine with me, but that might be a stretch for you guys.  1pm might be better??  Like fire pointed out, the heat is a big concern.... Latta Nature Preserve is going to be toasty, but they do have canoe rentals.  I can try to find a restaurant or other idea close by for refuge.  I live in South Charlotte, so I'm not as intimately familiar with the north side!

Ok, let's try this again.  I propose we meetup on Saturday, July 21.  Exact location is to be determined.  If we get some South Carolina interest we'll keep it in Charlotte, otherwise we'll pick something a little more central in NC like around Greensboro or Asheboro.  Who's in?

Karen and I had discussed meeting at Lake Lucas which is a little lake near Asheboro.  It's almost exactly halfway between the Triangle and Charlotte.  So if we've got no SC interest I recommend we meet there at 12:00 on Saturday.  They've got some picnic areas so we can hang out and have lunch and talk.  There's a small hiking trail and fishing and there's boat and canoe rentals if anyone is so inclined.

Hey Carolina Mustachians!  I am not going to be able to join you this Saturday for the meetup.....unfortunately we have a ceiling repair job that demands attention!  Ugh....but since I have no desire to deal with a bunch of blown-in insulation dropping into the middle of my living room this must be fixed ASAP. :(  Most weekends are pretty open and I'm bummed this one got messed up!  Y'all have fun!! I hope to meet you soon!

It looks like we'll have to postpone again.  Karen and uspsfan are both out, so it's down to just jpo and myself.  If anybody wanted to come hang out it in Durham around lunch time that could be an option but otherwise we'll have to reschedule.

I suggest waiting it out until the weather gets warmer (March-April?). Granted it's supposed to hit 70+ this weekend, but that's very short notice.

In other news, if anyone wants to play tennis/golf around Chapel Hill on the weekends, hit me up, my regular partners are too busy with their own lives, it seems. :)

Charlotte resident here. I'd be into meeting, not sure about driving all the way to Raleigh though. I got one of my coworkers addicted MMM as well so that's at least the two of us. Hopefully something can come together closer this way.

I recently started a couple of projects MMM or ERE type projects. I'm building a tiny house on a trailer, I got my plans from Tumbleweed Homes. My trailer is coming back from the welder any day now and I can start laying the subfloor and insulation. http://www.tumbleweedhouses.com/

The other project I'm working on is biking more. I'm trying to limit my driving miles to 10,000. Which doesn't sound like a hard goal but my office is 13 miles from my house. I estimate it's about 6,500 per year in commuting.

I propose we meet Feb 16 somewhere in the Triangle.  I'm open to suggestions for locations - bar, restaurant, someone's house?

And Paul, I have a feeling I won't provide much of a challenge, but I'd hit around some tennis balls on the weekend.

Early evening is fine for me, still on Feb 16. I can vouch for Tyler's- great beer selection and reasonably priced food too. For those unfamiliar with Durham, it's in the middle of the American Tobacco campus in downtown Durham.

It sounds like we have jpo, fire and myself confirmed, potentially with ph0rque, and Karen if she can find other folks from Charlotte.

Hi ace and layzbones, good to see some new names in here.  I had a great time getting to put a face to the name with ph0rque, Paul, and jpo and his girlfriend at our meetup in Durham.  I suppose meeting up at a bar wasn't the most mustachian locale but it was pretty handy given the snow we were having that weekend.  I'd definitely love to do it again and get to meetup with the Charlotte contingency too.  I'd be willing to switch up hosting locations and carpool down to Charlotte if any of the other Triangle crew are up for it.  Hopefully it won't take us as long to organize the second meetup as it did the first.

I keep checking back to see if any of the other Charlotte folks have suggestions for a date.... if there is a meetup I hope to be able to come.  I'm not up to planning it or even suggesting a date because I'm having surgery in a few days. I've spent a lot of time getting ready (making extra meals to freeze, catching up on house chores and yard work) so my downtime will be less stressful hopefully. Anyway, I'll keep checking back and hope to meet you guys sometime soon!

Hi! We are in Charlotte. The Huz and I have always spent far less than we've earned but discovering MMM a few weeks ago has totally turned our philosophy upside down.

If there are people in Charlotte still wanting to meet up or people willing to come to Charlotte - we'd be happy to host a potluck picnic in our backyard. We did this for my daughter's birthday party a few weeks ago - picnic blankets and all. It was a lot of fun.

Any interest?

Unfortunately, I'm out of town for a wedding on the 23rd. In DC for a small house building workshop on the 30th.

I think if you have 3 people can make a date you should go for it. The key thing is just to get started, I'll do my best to make the second meeting.

OT--sorry: When and where is the workshop?

Thursday would work.  I seem to recall I'm the sole Durhamite so I'd be happy to meet somewhere out in Chapel Hill or Cary if that's more convenient for everyone else.  But in that case I'll leave the exact location up to someone else.  If you want to do Durham again, maybe Bull McCabe's so we can grab some drinks?

I would be interested in attending a meet up. It looks like I missed the previous event. I only just realized there was a setting to auto alert me to new posts. Duh.. that was stupid. I'll stay up to date from now on.

Not to be too off topic but this Duke Energy page (most people in NC are using Duke Electric) has some good discounts on LED bulbs. I bought a few and it's worked out well. The shipping costs do eat into the savings though.

Spedley - Excellent, thanks for pointing out the second page tab at the bottom of the map. Too bad it doesn't allow all icons to be displayed on one page. Maybe the next round of google maps will allow it.

btw - I go for a night bike ride with a group on Thursday evenings at 7:30. We leave from performance bikes in the park road shopping plaza right near you. We usually ride for about an hour and a half, casual pace of about 11 mph, it's a social ride. You should join us if you're into biking.

Paul der Krake just mentioned in my introduction thread (https://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/welcome-to-the-forum/hi-i-am-rootofgood!-retired-at-33-life-is-good!/) that I might want to stop by here and say hello.  So "Hello!".

I'm in the Raleigh area a few miles from downtown kind of near the Midtown N Hills area (but to the east where house prices are 1/3 of those in the North Hills area!).  I'm up for a meetup sometime in or around Raleigh.

Slumming it at the park just to hang out or for a picnic would be cool.  There's also a neat little greenway just inside the Beltline that would be decent for a little nature walk.  Truly mustachian.  Less mustachian might be a laid back brewpub or bar with drink specials.  Natty Greene's near Glenwood South/Downtown Raleigh has $2 pint night Thursdays and $3 pints on Sundays I think.  Been there a couple times and it's not annoying (for a bar).  Open to suggestions though as I'm not a bar hopper by any means.

I don't mind doing a little organizing if there's interest.  I can throw up a collaborative google spreadsheet to help plan (availability, location, etc).

I don't have a good feel for the folks on the forum, but I assume youngish 20- and 30- somethings?  I have 3 kids that may tag along if there are other kids that might be there (ages 1 to 8).

At the one I went to I think we were all 20s-30s.

Looking at the Mustache Map it looks like there are a lot more Mustachians in the Triangle now than got together a while back.

I'm only 33 years young, but we have an 8 year old so that makes me an old dude to some.  I'm learning to use the twitter if that helps.

I'll check back here periodically to see if there is any interest in a meetup.

RALEIGH/DURHAM/CARY/CHAPEL HILL MMM'ers:

I'll throw out a time and place and let's see if there is interest and availability.

Picnic Lunch
Saturday, October 12 at 11:30 am
The Rose Garden (https://maps.google.com/maps?q=Rose+Garden&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=&ll=35.791955,-78.668665&spn=0.001118,0.001635&t=h&z=20&vpsrc=6&iwloc=A&cid=10587904372580099909) in Raleigh

If you don't know where it is, it is just north of the NC State Campus and right behind the Raleigh Little Theater.  Very central for those in Raleigh, and on the Chapel Hill/Durham side of Raleigh not far off the interstate for those that want to commute down.

Nice free park.  Free parking all around, just read the signs.  Bring your own picnic lunch and beverages (maybe skip the alcohol, it'll be 11:30 am and who gets drunk in the morning?).  I'm up for potluck if it doesn't get too complicated.  We'll probably bring a big bag of chips or something to share anyway.  May have Mrs. RootofGood and kids in tow (ages 1, 7, and 8), if you wanted to bring significant others and/or kids.

Unless the theater happens to be open, there aren't any bathrooms in the park, but there's McD's, some other shopping, and 2 libraries about 1/4 mile away that are well known for decent bathrooms in addition to mediocre burgers and stacks of books (respectively).

No axe murderers allowed.  Unless you are bringing really good sandwiches for all of us.

60 miles.  Hard core man.  If you cycle, check out trails through umstead and from art museum to near NC state.  Cool scenery from when we have walked/hiked, but no idea if a cycling route is available the whole way, and some may be mtb trails in umstead (no idea for sure).

I can haul extra water for your refills if necessary, although there is a water fountain at the park right across the street from the rose garden too.  Can't recall seeing a water fountain @ Rose Garden.

Here's an updated date and details for a MMMMeetup in Raleigh.  I hope to see some of you there!

Picnic Lunch
Sunday, October 27 at 11:30 am

Something came up (gov't shutdown affected house closing date) and I changed my availability on the doodle accordingly. Sorry if that throws a wrench into the plans.

Edit: may still try to make it but wouldn't count on it.

Anyone still interested in the October 27th meetup in Raleigh?  The doodle shows ice183, Paul, and me as available.  I'm still available but haven't heard any confirmations from others.

Anyone interested in a later date?

Looks like a critical mass is available for Sunday Oct 27th at 11:30.  See you guys down at the Rose Garden.  The forecast says sunny and 63, so it should be a perfect (and slightly cool) day for meeting outside.

Note: I created a new thread specifically for this Oct 27 meetup here: https://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/meetups-and-social-events/raleigh-nc-mmmmeetup-october-27-2013/

Please comment/reply in that thread for meetup related issues.  Thanks!

Meetup report:  five of us made it out to the Rose Garden in Raleigh today (plus my wife and 3 kids).  Beautiful day to be outside!  We talked for just a second about the next meetup, but didn't set a date or discuss any details.

I'm currently studying at NC State. Would definitely be up for a meetup in the Raleigh/Triangle area!

Oh and thanks Justin/RootofGood and Stephen for bringing this part of the forum to my attention

Alright, it's now March, which means that we could get something organized and shoot for April to give everyone some time to clear their schedules. Because we're all so busy and all that.

Thoughts on location? Time of the day?

Hi! I'm new to the forums here. I live in Raleigh - moved here just over a year ago from NoVa/DC Metro. I'm enjoying the lower cost of living a less traffic! I am definitely up for a get together in the triangle area. Looking forward to getting to know folks here. :)

I'm up for the next meet up.  I can look for a local park or other meeting area in Raleigh.  And I'm up for driving to Durham/Cary.  I think last time everyone besides me was coming from Durham or Cary.

I can also offer my house as a gathering place but it is a little farther from Durham than the Rose Garden where we met last fall.  I'm roughly situated near the I-440 Beltline and Capital Boulevard.

Hi Tar Heels!

Apologies for hijacking your meetup thread, but I have a quick question:

I'll be in Charlotte Tuesday and Wednesday on a business trip and I'm curious what fun, mustachian things there are to do around here? I'll be staying in a hotel downtown, without a car.

Thanks so much! I've never been to the South Eastern US and I'm really excited for my trip (even though I'll be working most of the time!)

North Carolina Mustachians:

I just received a media inquiry looking for young people seeking FI or ER that are willing to be interviewed about their ER goals.  The article is on the topic of early retirees and the New Economy.

The journalist is located in Chapel Hill but can do phone/skype/email interviews.  PM me and I can forward you her info if you're interested.

I like fire's idea of meeting at his place and then taking one car there, because parking really does fill up fast. Let's say meet there at 10am? In my experience, the afternoon is way harder to find a spot because that's when every college student in the Triangle is now awake.

As to what to bring: swimsuit, drinking water, sunscreen & hat, floats if you have them (I'll have on or two extra).

Alright y'all. What about the Saturday before Thanksgiving, the 22nd?

List of potential activities, in no particular order, just a brain dump, suggestions welcome:
- drinking beer
- park outing
- potluck
- defy gravity (http://www.defygravity.us/durham/Photos.aspx) (just kidding)
- bike ride around some town
- ice skating, if it takes us another 3 months to figure something out

So far we've done Raleigh and Durham (twice if the quarry counts as Durham), so we could do CH this time.

Sounds like we have enough critical mass for another attempt!

Where would everyone like to go? It's little cold to go swimming, so now is the time for everyone to pitch their favorite bar, restaurant, or any other building that can accommodate a small group.

Great idea, and one I thought about suggesting for kids (but didn't!).  There's also the grassy plaza nearby at the Capitol for picnics (or one of 2 restaurants/lounges inside the museum where you can brown bag if you want or buy cheap food).

New proposed meetup date: May 16, 2015 (Saturday) at 11am

Where?

Sarah P Duke Gardens, in Durham. Kid friendly, dogs allowed with leash. Plenty of space everywhere at this time of day. The crowds only really show up after 3pm.

What?

Potluck brunch. We all need to eat (if you don't, please come anyway and tell me your secret), so bring whatever you want. It shouldn't be too hot at this time of day, and there are shaded areas. Should it rain, I am willing to host indoors at my nearby apartment as a backup.

Awesome I thought!

Then realized our 3 kids have dental appointments at 11 am exactly the same day.  And we're going out of the country not long after that for 2 months and might not be able to reschedule before departing.  :(

Hanging out with peeps, structural integrity of children's teeth...  Hmmm....  :)

If history is any indication, meetups have usually run for about two hours, so that's more or less what I had in mind. I don't mind accomodating the schedule a little bit (maybe push to 1230?) if everybody is cool with the proposed change.

The next Triangle MMM meetup is now a potluck brunch/lunch/whatever on May 16, 2015 (Saturday) at 12:30 in Duke Gardens, in Durham.

We currently have 5 people confirmed plus a likely delegation from the RootOfGood household whose size remains to be determined. If anybody else is planning on attending, please respond and subscribe to this thread to make sure you get updates.

We'll definitely be there and might even get there before 12:30 since it looks like we'll be free in Raleigh around 11 or 11:30.  We've never been to Duke gardens so will definitely be checking it out if we get there early.  Yay being tourists in our own town!  :)  It should be me, Mrs. RootofGood and the 3 kids.  Hoping some others will come up with some kids to bring along, too.

I'm hoping to figure out a meatalicious dish that's hot.

Any thoughts on plates, utensils, drinks, etc?  BYOB all that stuff?  I can probably bring a couple of half gallons of water, disposable cups, plates, utensils, etc.

Do they have water fountains and bathrooms in the gardens?

There is at least one water fountain that I know of. I am bringing a picnic basket with enough plates, cups, and utensils for 4. If someone volunteers to bring a few more, then we will have enough for everybody. No need to have everone carry their own kitchen.

More seriously, we can do the quarry again in a few months when it's hot. It requires a little more organization, but I'm happy to play benevolent dictator again.

Can I get some comments from folks about chiefly what area around Raleigh you live in? I tell people "Raleigh" but I'm actually 18 miles north, up in Youngsville.

There are lots of venues in north raleigh for a meetup, plenty of common greenspaces and picnic areas. Wake Forest even has a neat little "gazebo" in downtown, sitting in a parking lot, that would make a good meetup spot. AND, they have a brewpub that would be an even more AWESOME meetup spot.

I'd be interested in planning a kind of North Raleigh sub-group meeting where we just land at a brewpub or a civilized bar/pub for a little while and talk shop about frugalism, MMM and investing.

I haven't attended any meetups yet but have considered it.  I currently live in Fuquay Varina Southwest of Raleigh but I've lived in a few areas around Raleigh/Wake Co.  I started out in Southern Granville county not far from Youngsville then to Wake Forest and then Zebulon.  My office is still just outside Youngsville on US1 but I work from home 99% of the time.  Driving 40+ miles across Wake County isn't fun.....ever.

We're about two miles from downtown Raleigh. North Raleigh sounds good for a meetup. Any particular place you were thinking? There are also several breweries that have openned in the area that may be a good location to meet up. Big Boss, NickelPoint or BlackJack Brewing Company. There's normally a lot of seating, reasonably priced beers and food trucks.

Good points, all, about the brewing companies and pubs! I love the idea of landing at a pub, but I don't love the idea of spending $5 for a pint pour. I'm wondering if there's some way to find a place to meetup that won't compromise our frugality, and possibly, bring some HOMEBREW? I'm wondering how many of you are homebrew-curious and might be interested in trying some free of charge.

I'm thinking of a park-like atmosphere with a couple picnic tables and a freestanding permanent charcoal grill. Then anyone who wanted to bring something to grill could do so. (not sure I'd try that in this heat, but hey, nice to have the option).

I guess we'd need to find some place with public bathroom accessibility. That was the HUGE WIN at Duke Gardens: they had public bathrooms right across the field from where we met. Of course, landing at a brewpub solves that problem nicely, too....

I'm 4 miles from downtown Raleigh along US 1 so North Raleigh is very convenient to me of course (though I'm more of a Midtown resident).

I can't think of any free outdoor places with bathrooms and grills that also allow drinking in public.  I think most city/county parks frown on that sort of thing.  There's a park in my neighborhood that has bathrooms, grills, and a covered picnic shelter (again, 4 miles from downtown), but it's a city park so alcohol is technically a no no.  Homebrew sounds great though I'm no brewer.

I'd be up for meeting at a coffee place too.  You can usually get that kind of brew for a buck or two and sit for hours.

I'm starting to like the "meet indoors" idea way better than meeting outside, whether it's a coffee place or a brewpub or whatever. I realized after posting my earlier comment that it's gonna be hot as hell for the forseeable future around here and I'd like to have another meetup sooner rather than later.

RootofGood, what would you think about landing some place like Big Boss? I don't know if they'd want anyone bringing homebrew, but I'm sure it's cool inside and the bathrooms are good.

And of course, there's any number of very excellent brewpubs in downtown, but I figure Big Boss has space and would be less crowded...

Thoughts?

Yeah the heat pretty much rules out outdoor venues if you want to get one going soon. I don't think the homebrew meetup idea is really viable unless someone is gracious enough to host in their own home.

One free option is the meeting rooms at Wake County Public Libraries.  No food and drinks unfortunately, but you can reserve the room itself for free.  I imagine water and maybe coffee is allowed.  The best north Raleigh library might be North Regional Library and they have a 30 person conference room available.  The facility is almost brand new so should be pretty decent.

Also, if there are any faculty or students at NCSU or Duke, they might be able to reserve a room that allows food and drinks too.

Haven't been to a meetup yet (just moved back to the area!) but following this thread for future meetups. We live in North Durham, about a mile from the West Point on the Eno, so a quarry meetup would be super convenient!

Oh also, has anyone considered making a facebook group/meetup.com group for triangle mustachians? It might be a little bit more convenient than a forum post, and might get more people outside of the forum to join.

I like the way you think PdK. I have a place I'm considering and I even have a couple ideas for a presentation:

http://compassrosebrewery.com/ is where I would start.

I'd like to start out with a program on bicycles. Not safety stuff, just talking about the bike itself, what's good, what's not and what kind of equipment you should expect a bike to have at certain price points. Indeed, I have two bikes I could use in the presentation: a "cheap" bike and a new-ish "expensive" bike (that I didn't pay a lot for, and I can explain that too...)

Now, here's another idea I've got: Don't have just ONE meeting. Have a series of three meetings, all in breweries located in each of the three points of the triangle. That way we really make it easier for anyone who wants to, to ride a bike to the meeting.

The only thing that kinda bugs me? The fact that we'd be meeting somewhere that you might be expected to cough up some cash for beer. I believe any meeting where you have to think about spending even one dollar might be infringing on mustachian principles.

Anyway: I'm thinking, pondering, trying to come up with something that's as mustachian as possible....

I will be beginning what I am calling a "long sabbatical" at the end of next month, so I am eager to meet with others and learn from their experiences.

P.S. - I was pleasantly surprised to see disc golf mentioned on this thread, which is one of my favorite things to do. If anyone is interested in meeting up for a casual round, let me know. Beginners are welcome too. I have discs you can borrow.

Hi RoG - can you think of any place in Raleigh we could have a little meetup where I could bring some homebrew to share? Older son and I did five batches recently that all came out beautiful and are really tasty for folks who like IPAs.

I'd like for us all to land at Compass Rose Brewing, but I'm trying to come up with a venue that won't imply "spending", but where we can bring stuff if we want. For free, my homebrew is a hell of a deal compared to buying a $4-$5 pint pour.

I would not turn down a homebrew opportunity. Based on my quick Googling, it sounds like Raleigh parks allow alcohol, but you need to sign a waiver. More info here: http://www.city-data.com/forum/raleigh-durham-chapel-hill-cary/158961-looking-place-hold-large-picnic.html

I looked around Raleigh Parks and Rec site some more.  Looks like you can get an alcohol permit but it's $50.  And other parks say "consumption of alcohol on City of Raleigh property is prohibited and you'll be arrested".  So it's $50 plus you have to rent a shelter or a facility.  Which might still be cheaper if split than paying $5/pint at a local brewery but probably not worth the hassle.

Otherwise, I can't really think of anywhere that you can drink (legally) that's free.  Although there are always some guys in the park near me sipping on 40's or tall boys, so maybe it's okay?  ;)

Dam. Thanks J for heading that up, much appreciated. I'm starting to think that a local brewery might actually be more friendly to bringing in a little homebrew (and letting others purchase if they so choose) than places that are typically not beer-friendly at all.

Now, I have located a place in RTP where we could have a meeting that I know is beer-and-food-friendly, called "The Frontier". But these folks are in the business of selling meeting space - so I'd have to check and see what, if anything, they might be interested in providing for free. The only real bummer about this is gettting there would be equally challenging from all points of the triangle, given that they are located at Park Offices in RTP (near where the old Governor's Inn used to be).

You know, I've often thought I wanted to turn my own garage into a place where I could have friends over, serve them homebrew from a tap and have great conversation, play table-tennis or watch a movie or something. People seem to be so reluctant to allow generally any kind of brew that I'm realizing this is a good idea.

But, I live in Youngsville, which is Bumfuck's Bumfuck for most people, so again we're talking a need to drive a car in many cases....(I would bike it, but then I'm crazy that way... :-) )

Quote
Otherwise, I can't really think of anywhere that you can drink (legally) that's free.  Although there are always some guys in the park near me sipping on 40's or tall boys, so maybe it's okay?  ;)

The way you said that is hilarious, even if the topic isn't. Bwahahaha....

Another possibility that occurred to me: My parents live in a neighborhood in N Raleigh that has a park/picnic area where I'm pretty sure alcohol would be fine, especially if it's just a handful of people. I will run it by my parents. It sounds like it would be a fairly centrally located spot for folks (near Six Forks and 540).

If you're able to get access, I'll vote "thumbs up".

I think I can handle the logistics of bringing homebrew on a bike. If not, I'll give in and drive my lil' 2000 Honda Insight. :-)

Newbie to forums, and MMM for that matter.  I live in Raleigh and would love to meet other folks with some similar interests.  I live in an apartment - I could check on what it would take to rent the club house.  Complex is near Capital Blvd and 540.

James/mefla, I thought about suggesting The Frontier as well - great minds ;) It is an entrepreneur coworking space but as far as I know, free to work out of.  I have a few friends who work out of there sometimes.  I can double check with them, but honestly I think it could work if need be.

Ben, Thanks for posting that link to the talk on economic inequality at UNC.  It's on my calendar :)

Excellent, excellent!

If we can draw a number of MMM'ers, I would be all over The Frontier. And I know they allow craft ale, they provide it for free on Thursdays after work. I'm thinking maybe I just pick a day in the future and we turn their Thursday-after-work party into a MMM meetup!

So by my recollection that is Thursday, October 9th ~5pm (maybe we should say 5:30 to give us worker bees time to arrive?). I could make that work, I will tentatively put it on my calendar.

I had a GREAT time. My only frustrations are that we didn't have enough time (I didn't really get to visit with everyone as much as I wanted) and we had a hard time assembling everyone because there were so many other people.

I say we go back again, same time, same place, but claim that couch as "our own". And someone, bring a mustache!

Hey guys! Thought this might interest some of you. I just started a Buy Nothing group for Northwest Durham and I knew at least one other person might be in the area of the group.

Buy Nothing is a hyper-local gift economy, sort of like a neighborhood Craigslist on Facebook where no money or bartering is traded or done. You post something you need or want to give and see if there are any takers in your area. I heard about it through the Frugalwoods blog and saw that there was no group for my area and decided to start one. If you're not in the Northwest area then check out the Buy Nothing site to see if there's a group for your area: http://buynothingproject.org/find-a-group/

Here's the Durham Northwest group for anyone that might be in the area. In order to join just PM me so I can confirm you are in the area and I'll add you: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1169006066450038/

Attached is a map of the boundaries of the group.

If everyone is busy with awkward office parties and dieting, it can wait until next year.

Hey SG: It's in Research Triangle Park, a place called "The Frontier". They host a free beer get-together on most thursdays to publicize their for-rent meeting and office space: http://www.rtp.org/about-us/the-frontier/

And specifically: http://www.rtp.org/event/happy-hour-11-26-15/

I may have jumped the gun on that one: the 17th is the one Thursday that will NOT have free beer because of some foodie conference.

With 4 confirmed attendees it sounds like we have a critical mass, so let's go ahead and write the 10th down in our calendars. Hopefully more people can join us.

The next MMM Triangle meetup will be held at The Frontier on December 10th, 2015, in RTP, from 4:30pm to 6:30. Yes, that’s a Thursday.

Critics have called us “lunatics who’ll end up eating cat food” and “not as weird as reddit”. Back by popular demand, the Triangle Mustachians shall meet again.

If you haven’t been to one before, local meetups are a great way to meet and chat with like-minded people from your local-ish community. Discussions are very informal in nature, and no specific agenda is agreed upon beforehand. Off the top of my head, all the following subjects have been discussed recently:
- index funds and general investing practices
- workplace policies and hilariously broke coworkers
- long term travel and immigration issues
- getting your significant other to See The Light(™)
- local real estate markets
- puppies, kittens, and ducklings

Liquid social lubricant will be provided free of charge courtesy of The Frontier, but the venue itself is not a bar and there is no pressure to drink beer if you don’t want to. Everyone is welcome, so do feel free to bring along your SO, or maybe that coworker you are slowly bringing around to our little cult, or really anyone you want.

The Frontier is located near I-40 and 147. The 4:30 start time is chosen not just because that’s when they open the beer tap, but also because that lets people avoid the brunt of rush hour traffic. Carpooling is obviously encouraged if you know of someone in your vicinity.

I'll be cross-posting this announcement to the Facebook group "Southeastern Mustachians" for extra recruitment efforts.

I'll be there in spirit, so you guys drink a couple of beers for me.  Daughter's Winter Concert at school is Dec 10, probably at 5:00 or 5:30.  If anyone wants to hear a bunch of fourth graders sing the greatest hits about Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, and a generic not-Christmas "It's December in America", then you're welcome to join me.  Otherwise, enjoy the free beer.

Post by: Faraday on December 11, 2015, 11:11:42 AM
I loved seeing everyone, but folks, I Want a RE-DO!!!! Here's why:

1) Our friends from the triad got NOTHING except a little bit of social time. No beers. No detailed mustachian discussion. I am bummed.
2) I most enjoy hearing about other people's badassity. We should have done a roundtable where people talk about things they have done that are mustachian or enable increased levels of mustachianism.

So let me make this offer, folks who came from west of the triangle:

1) If you want to re-do at the Frontier, let me know and we'll plan for the next "Beer Thursday". That's January 7th.
2) If you want a re-do nearer you, I'll travel your direction. If we do that, I'd prefer a weekend day, although we could have a weekday option sometime during the week of Christmas.

Topics:

1) Share your Badassity: What things have you done, or what things have you changed about your life that greatly increases the amount of money you can save, monthly, toward your FIRE?

2) Bicycles: I have bicycles and can bring either a manual bike or an ebike to show-and-tell. My bikes don't generally fall into the giant either-or category of "road bike or mountain bike". My bikes are commuter-oriented, and I can point out the features of the bike that optimize usage for commuting vs. "road or mountain".

3) Show-n-tell: I have a few SMALL purchases (Amazon, mostly) that enable the badass frugal lifestyle. One that I wish I'd brought with me last night was this bicycle light:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GFLQMAK?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00
It has a USB plug on it and it works AWESOMELY. It's meant to be a bicycle light, but it also comes with a headstrap so it can be a personal headlight. I've been testing it out and am extremely pleased with it for the money: UNDER $10!!!

Another good show-n-tell is my small hybrid car. 2000 Honda Insight two-seater, gets 60mpg. It's my daily driver. I replaced the hybrid battery myself along with the catalytic converters (myself). I could tell about that, with photos.

4) Personal Finance Tracking: I'd love to talk about how each of us track personal finances and what, if any, unique capabilities our chosen method might have (and the shortcomings, too).

5) Journey to FIRE: I still don't have a clue what anyone's FIRE goals are. (One of you mentioned 2020 and I agreed with that - 2020 is my targeted date. I think we briefly discussed that....but I would have loved to hear from everyone else.....

6) Running out of beer: That SUCKED! If we went to a venue that serves, we'd make sure we went somewhere that they would not run out, or I'd show up with some homebrew.

Even if we don't have a do-over, I'm going to schedule another meetup and at least a subset of these items I've listed above will be on the agenda.

Thoughts?!?! Talk to me "king" and "jmbodenh25", I'm mainly talking to you about this.

My husband and I have an unusual and lucrative side-business I can share.

Zamboni, the frontier is a meeting space in rtp, they have free beer selected Thursdays, which is one reason we've met there a few times. Normally it's pretty empty but there was a crowd in December!

I'm game for the 7th or 14th AND I will try to bring a mustache sign for us so people can find us easier 😀

Here's the address for the Frontier: 800 Park Offices Dr, Triangle, NC 27709

We usually meet around 4:30-5:30, people show up as they can. Beer starts flowing at 4:30 until it runs out, which was maybe 5:30 last time.

Long shot, but does anyone in the Triangle know of reasonable people thinking of selling their car? Dealing with craigslist folks who think their vehicle's after market CD player warrants asking $1,000 over Kelly Blue Book is getting old very fast.

Looking for something fuel efficient, preferably Toyota/Honda/Nissan/Mazda with 80-130k miles on the odometer, $2,000-5,000, stick shift preferred.

Maybe us!  2000 Honda civic (100k miles) or accord (166k miles), both very well maintained mechanically (with maintenance records).  Single owner.  Automatics, and the paint sucks so they look like 15 year old cars.

I'm looking for a 6-8 year old minivan with under 130k miles and finding the same thing.  Everything seems to be well over KBB and I can't find any of the lower trim level models (we don't want to pay for the luxury versions!).

Hey TravisS!
Welcome to MMM and congratulations on doing the DR approach. DR is a great way to start on the road to changing your life - if you've completed all the baby steps, you are ready to kick some butt MMM style. Here's a quick link for you to ponder that should give you something to think about on where you want to go next:

https://www.bogleheads.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=6211

There are several MMM folks near you - I know because they traveled to recent RTP MMM get-togethers. There are enough of you in the Triad that you could probably do a nice little meet-up.

We could do Duke gardens again in April when the weather is more reliably nice or Umstead if we want to go a little further south (I think we have some folks driving from south of the triangle...but my NC geography is horrible, so might be wrong)

Wait, Ingles has a dine in section?  All the ones I've been to seemed kind of shady like a crappy Food Lion (my knowledge of Ingles is probably 10+ years old).  But yeah, I'd totally meet at one of those places in a grocery store.

When Asheville turned into the Hipster Capital of the World, Bob Ingle mashed the gas to the floor on his stores. Now, they make Harris Teeter and Kroger's look like wimps.

The one on Tunnel Road is one of my faves. I love their salad bar, I get a pound of the little red sweet peppers that are about the size and shape of a golf ball and bring them back with me.  Oh, and the buy-one-get-one pork rinds. Chicharrones!

I always check their craft beer section to see what's up. Their prices are killer and often beat buying direct from the brewery.

Commenting so that I can try to get in on the next meet up in the triangle. Sounds like sometime in April at  Duke gardens, Umstead (or maybe Jordan lake?), or a brewery has been discussed. Should a date be selected? Are babies and not-so-mustacian husbands welcome at these things? I have a busy April but hope to be available to meet up.

Hey,

I'm up near Boone.  Our Ingles is lame, guess they ran out of funding for us!  I've been emailing Adli trying to get one here, but no luck.  Aldi rocks for saving $$$.

No mustache yet, but I'm enjoying the reading.  I've got the frugal part down, but the income, saving, and investing parts are missing!

Just installed a wood stove this Winter, so free heat & good exercise.  Bike riding is tough up here, so there's another strike against me.  Can't move because I haven't finished building our house yet, and likely won't until after I retire...(you can't rush a good thing, right?)

Just thought I'd say hello.  :)

Duke Gardens potluck lunch - April 24th @ 12:30 (Sunday) in Durham, NC

There is a large grassy area as indicated on this map by the red mark (http://m.imgur.com/eJXH2j8?r). Duke Gardens is a pretty popular attraction, parking is available.

Last year we set up shop under a tree in the shade, so the exact location may end up being a little off the mark. If this is your first time and the prospect of finding strangers in a mildly crowded area terrifies you, PM me and I will give you my cell phone number in case you get lost. That being said, we've never had issues finding each other.

Swordguy, thanks for the RE chat! Would love to do a meetup to see some Fayetteville RE, maybe when you don't have three house projects 😀

No need to wait.  I'm sure I'm going to need a break! :)

Hi NC (and specifically Triangle) peeps!

I'm co-hosting an event that will take place in RTP in June - June 21st.  It's called "The Road to Financial Wellness".  If you're familiar with the financial site Phroogal (www.phroogal.com), it's the founder who is going on a roadtrip promoting financial empowerment.  Should be a fun time, and it's free to attend.  You can RSVP here (and get a free book if you're quick enough): https://www.eventbrite.com/e/the-smile-lifestyle-event-in-raleigh-nc-pit-stop-13-tickets-25276934993

Feel free to reach out if you have questions.  I hope to see some of you there!

Hello Triangle!

My name is Juan, I live in Raleigh with my wife Elisa. We recently attended Camp Mustache 2016 and loved meeting so many mustachians. I enjoyed it so much that I am planning a mustachian meetup in the Raleigh area!

I have exchanged a few emails with Justin from rootofgood.com (http://rootofgood.com) and it is likely he will come!

Here are the details:

When: June 25, 2016 at 10:00am.
Where: NC Museum of Art (2110 Blue Ridge Rd, Raleigh, NC 27607)
What: Meet and hang out with fellow Mustachians!

Let me know if you have any questions. Hope to see many of you there!

Hey Juan, I just emailed you back (sorry I missed your earlier email a few days ago!), but I see you've already got a time set up.

I should be there.

Any shady places to hang out outside or is there a good lounge space inside if it's super hot/humid?

Hey All,

Just wanted to let you know that we have changed the time to 10am. Same date and place.
Changed the time because:

- 5:30pm may be too hot for some and we wouldn't have the option to go inside since the museum would be closed.
- At 10am we have the option to go inside if it's raining.

Sorry if the change is an inconvenience. Looking forward to meeting everybody!!

Hi, I'm looking forward to seeing everyone on Saturday.  I bumped into thedayisbrave this week at The Frontier and she's in for Saturday.

Where do we want to meet?  Weather says high of 86 degrees so it might get hot by noon.  I looked at google streetview and there appear to be some outdoor tables but not a ton of shade sort of in between the 2 art museum buildings in a courtyard area.  Their website mentioned picnic tables under some trees to the east of their east building (the older and less modern looking building) but I can't recall ever seeing them.

Inside the museum there's a lobby area with comfy seats that runs into an open cafe area with even more comfy seats.  The cafe doesn't serve till 11:30 so we could probably hang out there till 11:30 and probably later if it's not nice outside.  I'll try to call tomorrow to check on whether they care if we loiter in the cafe area (I doubt it's ever anywhere near full since there's two separate seating sections within what looks like the cafe area from google streetview imagery inside the museum).  Obviously I don't want to subject the group to spending $5 on a coffee or whatever the fancy pants museum charges so we'll see what they say.  They might also have other rooms in the museum where they could host us.  I'm open to other suggestions too since I've only been to the museum a few times in the past several years since the new building opened.

FYI, I think the Hunt Library at Centennial campus would be another excellent venue for a meetup in the future (for the Raleigh folks at least).  Lots of inside meeting space and some good outside picnic tables and it's a cool facility.  Free parking nights and weekends.  And fairly bikeable to get there if you're in Raleigh.

Hey Justin, thank you for taking the lead on finding an exact spot. Last time I was at the Museum with a group of friends we just hung out under the shade of the trees near the outdoor amphitheater.

Let's meet outside by the amphitheater, and then we can decide if we want to go inside or stay outdoors (I'd suggest bringing a picnic blanket or a folding chair in case we stay outside).

Look forward to meeting everybody!!

Great meet up today at the NC Museum of Art.  Hard to complain about the near-perfect weather for late June (though I still got some major sun burn/tanning going on).  I think I counted 8 of us.  Paul der Krake, Juan and wife and a few of his friends, and what I assume was Bourbon Belle (though I forgot to ask your screen name Ms. Belle).

Sorry you missed it too, Hualon. I do like the idea of having a place where we can plan meetups and that people will check more regularly.

I think Meetup charges organizer fees. A Facebook group should also work and it is free!

Just created the group:

Reminder that we're meeting up at Hunt Library on NC State University's Centennial Campus at 1 pm Saturday 9/17.

On the Triangle on FIRE facebook page I suggested we meet up in the lobby in front of the elevators by the woven wicker bench that looks like modern artwork (but I'm 90% sure it's an actual bench for sitting; if you're tiny you can also crawl through it).

I have no plans that day, just the thought of a 3.5 hour drive might stop me, but I discovered MMM 2 weeks after moving AWAY from Denver and I had no luck meeting any Mustaches in San Antonio, of course I now see an Austin meetup 2 weeks after moving to South Carolina! So I will put it in my calendar and try my best.

Hey all,

We're visiting your fair area until the 27th, and thought it might be fun to meet up with you all. Do you have any plans for an upcoming meetup, or would anyone be interested in one? Our schedule is relatively open, have nothing else to do :)

Suggestion on location is great as well. I saw that you met up at Duke Gardens previously, that's selfishly close to where we are staying, but I'm not sure if the weather calls for an outdoor meetup. I'm open to exploring anywhere or roughly accessing neighboring city. Sure I could find a way to get out there.

Hope to meet some of you.

Would love another meetup, but not sure if the holidays have people scurrying about -- December/January are usually tricky months to plan anything, at least among my friend circle.

I'm totally down though.  I'm right on the Raleigh/Cary border so Durham isn't too far for me.  Perhaps we can see how many are up for a meetup.. but if not just PM me and we can plan our own mini meetup :)

There is also a Triangle Area Mustachians Facebook group.. I know some peeps are active on there and not so much on the forums.. once we get something set up I will cross-post.

I am game in early January. Too chilly for Duke gardens I think. Maybe some where in the southpoint area? It's more central for Durham, Chapel Hill and Apex/Cary people.

The Frontier also has happy hour on the 5th of January but that might be tough for me to make, so I'm hesitant to suggest it...

What about Saturday Jan 7th? We could do lunch? Harvest 18 is really good and it's right by Southpoint.  However may be a little pricy for Mustachian budgets... Thoughts?

Hi Babybalrog,

I've been a Mustachian for a long time and live in Raleigh. 31 year old M.

Raleigh is my base but I teach English abroad, so therefore don't really have a perma-home so to speak. And I'm headed out to China in July for another year there.

However I'd like to socialize for the next two months while I'm here (I usually come back here in the summer) and am definitely down to meet people, say hello, and talk about money. Please keep me in the loop!

Everyone in the Triangle NC area... we are having a little shindig at my house on Oct 21 at noon.  I'm near the PNC arena.  Feel free to PM me if you  can come and I'll send you my address.

Potluck style -- please bring something to share.  Also bring chairs if you have any lawn chairs sitting around, please.  I have enough seating for about 15.

See you then!

Just bumping this up since the meetup is this weekend. Hope to see some old and new faces! :-)

Aww MAN! I can't believe I keep missing these things! ARGH! I hope everyone had a good time!

Anyone in this group out in Wilmington or interested in having a meetup there in February?

I would be more interested in a Wilmington meetup when it's beach weather... :)

I’m in Charlotte. Seems like Fayetteville is somewhat in the middle of the triangle, Charlotte, and Wilmington if you want to do a meetup soon, or we can plan for Wilmington in May?

I would love to host a meet-up.  (Sorry, just saw the message!)

Sat or Sun (Nov 17/18) would work for me..

Anyone else?   There are some nice parks, several museums, a nice downtown area.  Plenty of ethnic restaurants if people don't want to bring something for a potluck.

Everyone, the FB group just put together a meet up for November 11. We'll be meeting at the Umstead State Park Visitors Center at 11 am for a hike. Bring a packed lunch to carry to the lake. It is about 1 miles each way. Moderate terrain. If we get rained out Nov 17 is the back up day.

SwordGuy. Sorry I didn't see your post. We wanted to get the hike in while the weather is still nice. I wouldn't mind an indoor meet up once it's cold.

@CanuckExpat the suggestion is almost a year old but we're in Wilmington and I think a Meetup in Feb. 2019 would be a blast. This is the first I've really ventured into the Meetup sections of the MMM forums but now that we're FIREd, meeting other Mustachians seems like a cool way to spend some of our free time!

How about in Wilmington on Sat the 16th?   Is there a good place for folks to meet?

Thanks for thinking of me, but I'm not there. If/when I am next, I will revive the thread on my end. Enjoy the meetup

Hey there,

It's good to see someone interested in a meetup in Wilmington. Waving at you! I see you are in Fayetteville. Bit of a drive.

Sorry, but Saturday the 15th is all stacked up with holiday stuff for me. How about postponing until after the holiday? Or did you mean Sunday, the 16th?

In the interim, maybe we can gather up a few more people that are in Eastern NC. I know they are hiding somewhere.

Good catch on the dates!  I suppose either would work, but there are fewer things open on Sundays.

There's a link to a Facebook group that's more active.  I can post it there, too.

But someone (not me) needs to pick a place and activity because I just don't know the area.

What do you think about starting a new Wilmington thread with the goal to set up a meetup in January?

And cast a net (well, we are near the ocean and fishing references)...

Hi all,

I'm moving to Durham with my wife this summer to start our new life of early retirement (32 years old!!!! Whoop!)

Would love to meet up with some other Mustacheans.

We've been living in Europe for the last 10 years and are hoping to keep up some of our no clownlike habits back in the USA.

All best,
Ben

I'm in Raleigh. PM me if you want to meet up. The FB group does events about twice a year. A little more fire on them to do something would be nice.

Hey guys!

I'm kind of new to the FI movement but I'm super excited about it. I live in Jacksonville NC and I am trying to find a somewhat close meetup with like minded mustachians! I haven't really heard about much around my area, but I wouldn't mind driving a ways to talk to some people who think like I do.

Yes.  Haven't seen one for Fayetteville or Wilmington, for example.  Please post a link if you find one!

I'm new to Durham, NC. I'm a 28F with a 1-year-old. I haven't really explored the local FB group because it's tough with a toddler, but I am still looking for new buddies in the area.

PM me if you want to get together! We love the outdoors and there are so many great options around here.
