I know I've seen a few other North Carolinians posting in the comments. Anyone interested in a meetup around either the Triangle or the Triad?
-
We'll be in the Triad in June.
-
What's bringing you to High Point, Shedinator?
-
What's bringing you to High Point, Shedinator?
Wife and I lived there for 2 years (I did my undergrad at John Wesley College). I'm finishing up my Masters, and didn't get any PhD offers, so we decided to go ahead and move back to where we loved to live. The low cost of living doesn't hurt, either! We'll be able to live on my relatively low salary while I search for a job with a higher one.
-
Cool, I know what you mean about the lower cost of living. I moved from DC and it has certainly helped the 'stash. Well, if we get any other interest in the meetup maybe we could meet somewhere in between us like Burlington or Graham.
-
I'd drive to a NC meetup.
-
A greater Carolinas meetup sounds like a great idea.

A greater Carolinas meetup sounds like a great idea.
There are quite a few SC folks posting so I'd agree with that sentiment. Charlotte might be a good midway location since it's a straight shot from the upstate and low country of SC with 85 and 77. It's about a 2-3 hour drive from the upstate, 1.5-2.5 from the mid-state, and 3.5 - 4.5 from the low country. From the RTP area of NC it's about 2.5 - 3, and from the coast it's going to be 4-6 depending where but anywhere will be long from the coast except RTP.
-
I'd like to go to a meetup in theory, but right now I work seven days a week, so I can't see myself making it. Hopefully I'll only a few more months of this schedule to kill the last of our non-mortgage debt.

I'm in Charlotte NC and would be interested in a meet up as well. I'm not completely sure what we'd all talk about but I'm sure it would be interesting. I'm just getting into this blog. In college my friends always thought I was frugal to the core, but I don't have anything on MMM or Jacob from ERE.
-
I'm all for a Carolinas meetup around Charlotte. It's a pretty central location for anywhere in NC or SC as Somnambulist pointed out. And we could always carpool there to maintain our mustachianism.
In college my friends always thought I was frugal to the core, but I don't have anything on MMM or Jacob from ERE.
That sums up my life pretty well, usps. I've always been the cheap one of my friends but lots of people on MMM and ERE definitely put me to shame.
-
Raleigh here. Since we are all cheap...erm I mean frugal...what would we do?
-

Camping? Picnic? Hang out at somebody's house and discuss our 'stashes? I'm open to some mustachian suggestions.
-
I'm just starting to use the forums more and saw you guys. I'm in Charlotte and would be interested in attending.
-
Hi Karen. It looks like you're right at the epicenter of the proposed meetup. Any suggestions for things to do around Charlotte?
-
Charlotte has a lot of disc golf courses, those are free as long as you own a couple of discs and don't lose them. Mostly parks as far as free things go. It's almost like we'd have to have a book club or something to discuss. Maybe if there are enough people here in Charlotte we could work on a community garden or something of that nature. I'd love to be part of a tool sharing or work sharing group.
-
Symphony Sundays used to be free in Southpark area....really cool to take a picnic. I think there may be similar activities at a park in Pineville with free music or movies on occasion near a small lake. It's a nice setting. I'll start paying close attention to see if any other opportunities pop up!
Karen
-
I live fairly close to Pineville. I might even be able to bike to the meet up. I think once we post a time and a place we might have more people committing to the meet up.
I'm currently working full time and taking some accounting courses at CPCC. That wraps up within 3 weeks. After that I'd have more time and could make more of a firm committment.
-
I thought putting a date out there might help this come together. So how about towards the end of June, either the 23rd or 30th?
-
I'm out of town on the 23rd, but available for a meetup on the 30th.....
-
Either date would work for me.
-
Unfortunately, I'm out of town for a wedding on the 23rd. In DC for a small house building workshop on the 30th.
I think if you have 3 people can make a date you should go for it. The key thing is just to get started, I'll do my best to make the second meeting.
-
So it looks like the 30th. Any suggestions on where to meetup, Karen, if we're doing this in Charlotte? I'm not familiar enough with Charlotte to really plan it.
-
And would any of the folks from the Triad/Triangle area want to carpool down to Charlotte?
-
And would any of the folks from the Triad/Triangle area want to carpool down to Charlotte?
I might be possibly in for the 30th if this happens.
-
I will get on it pronto! It's easier to find a good location knowing the date. I'll check a few local entertainment resources and get back to you guys later today with a few suggestions. Charlotte has a lot of free/ low cost options for a social event.
Karen
-
Hi everyone! I didn't find anything specifically for June 30th in Charlotte (mostly browsing free movie, concert and cultural events). I do know of a great free place to meet though....it's called Latta Nature Preserve. It's part of Mecklenburg County parks and rec. This place has great picnic areas and hiking trails and is on a lake. It might be a nice place to bring a picnic lunch and hang out. Some of the trails follow the lakeshore and there is lots of shade too. This is just an idea....it does get hot in Charlotte, so outdoors might not be ideal. If anyone has any ideas about the type of place, general time of day, that might help too. I can also check with some of the libraries for recommendations on meeting venues.
-
Ooooo, the raptor center is in the Latta Nature Preserve too (although it's not free). I think a picnic at the nature center sounds like a great idea. Probably around noon or 1:00 would be good since some of us have a decent drive to get there.
-
Oh, I'm glad someone else knows this place!
-
A handful of you guys oughta head over here (https://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/ask-a-mustachian/starting-overnew-career) and let the thread OP know about Carolinan mustachianism. I mean, if you want...
-
Thanks for the suggestion! I just posted about the Charlotte area on that thread.
-
Anybody else in for the meetup next weekend?
-
Yes, I'm in!!!
-
fire and I will be carpooling from the Triangle on Saturday morning (leaving around 9ish), probably driving through Greensboro/High Point. Anyone else along that route who wants to join the pool is welcome!
Do we have a head count for the meetup? Sounds like it may be only 3...
-
I'm in. Karen, what's the exact time and place? And is there somewhere we can escape from the 105 degree weather on Saturday for at least part of the time?
-
I think it's just the three of us. I can meet you guys at whatever time is best, since your drive is the farthest. Noon is fine with me, but that might be a stretch for you guys. 1pm might be better?? Like fire pointed out, the heat is a big concern.... Latta Nature Preserve is going to be toasty, but they do have canoe rentals. I can try to find a restaurant or other idea close by for refuge. I live in South Charlotte, so I'm not as intimately familiar with the north side!
-
Sorry, four of us....John is coming with me!
-
Awesome! Any other last minute joiners? The more the merrier.
-
Maybe next time. I'd bring my whole family, but we've done a lot of travelling lately.
Have fun, guys!
-
I just lost my carpooler. I'm not particularly keen on driving to Charlotte by myself. Anybody else between Durham and Charlotte interested?
-
Unfortunately something personal came up that conflicts with the meetup! Sorry guys.
-
That's ok guys. It's not like we can't try again some other time! You all have a good weekend and we can try planning this another day when it hopefully won't be 105 degrees in Charlotte!
-
Between the heat and multiple trips to Charlotte in the last month I was not up for it. We should try again when it cools off some.
-
Ok, let's try this again. I propose we meetup on Saturday, July 21. Exact location is to be determined. If we get some South Carolina interest we'll keep it in Charlotte, otherwise we'll pick something a little more central in NC like around Greensboro or Asheboro. Who's in?
-
We can be there.
-
I'm in Charlotte and free on the 21st.
-
The 21st should work for me too.
-
Awesome. It looks like we've got a pretty good turn out. Somnambulist, do you plan on representing SC?
-
21st is approaching fast.
Any ideas on where we might be meeting/what we'll be doing?
-

Karen and I had discussed meeting at Lake Lucas which is a little lake near Asheboro. It's almost exactly halfway between the Triangle and Charlotte. So if we've got no SC interest I recommend we meet there at 12:00 on Saturday. They've got some picnic areas so we can hang out and have lunch and talk. There's a small hiking trail and fishing and there's boat and canoe rentals if anyone is so inclined.
-

Sorry, this weekend is not good for me. :-( Apologize for the delay in my reply, but I haven't had time to look at the forums in the last couple weeks.
-
Sorry to hear that Somnambulist, hopefully next time. Is everyone else good with Lake Lucas? Anybody else want to join us?
-
Hey Carolina Mustachians! I am not going to be able to join you this Saturday for the meetup.....unfortunately we have a ceiling repair job that demands attention! Ugh....but since I have no desire to deal with a bunch of blown-in insulation dropping into the middle of my living room this must be fixed ASAP. :( Most weekends are pretty open and I'm bummed this one got messed up! Y'all have fun!! I hope to meet you soon!
-
No problem, Karen. Sorry to hear about the ceiling. I believe that leaves us with three. I'm still game to meetup if everyone else.
-
For any last minute attendees interested in meeting up, here's the address for Lake Lucas. Looking forward to meeting some fellow mustachians tomorrow.
3158 Old Lexington Rd
Asheboro, NC 27205
-
It looks like we'll have to postpone again. Karen and uspsfan are both out, so it's down to just jpo and myself. If anybody wanted to come hang out it in Durham around lunch time that could be an option but otherwise we'll have to reschedule.
-
I'd still like to make this happen, but clearly I'm lousy at picking dates. :)
Anybody else care to suggest a meetup time?
-
I don't have a suggestion for a date yet, but I'm game to try again! Maybe slightly cooler weather will bring the mustachians out of the woodwork. :)
-
BTW....ceiling is secured and John is working on the aesthetics now! I will try to post pics on the DIY forum when it's finished.
-
Now that we're (hopefully) coming into some cooler weather, anyone want to try this again?
-
I'd love a meetup! I'm in the Fayetteville area, so the Triangle is close, but W-S, G'boro and Charlotte aren't a bad drive either.
-
I'm game to try again. Saturdays mornings are busy for me through October, but I would able to do a Saturday afternoon or a Sunday.
-
Masha, JPO and I are both in the Triangle so final location will end up depending on who all responds and what ends up being a fairly central location. I'm open to suggestions for a date because we've seen what happens when I pick one. :)
-
I was just in the triangle and also Raleigh this past weekend! Wish I'd thought to post about that! It would have been great to meet up with you guys!
-
Anyone willing to give it another try before the holidays?
-
I am in for a weekend excursion except for 12/8-9 and 12/22-1/6.
-
I'm in! I can't do the weekend of November 10, but otherwise I'm free and would seriously dig meeting real, live mustachians!
-
This coming weekend is bad for me but I should be free after that.
-
For November I'm out of town on Thanksgiving weekend, but otherwise not much going on. We already have plans for this weekend on Saturday.
-
Now that the world hasn't ended and the holidays are over, shall we try this again?
-
Triangle resident checking in!
-
Hi Paul. I believe you're the third person in the Triangle. Maybe we're reaching a critical mass to actually meetup.
-
Triangle would be great. :-)
-
The Triangle works for me. A meetup would be kick ass!
-
I suggest waiting it out until the weather gets warmer (March-April?). Granted it's supposed to hit 70+ this weekend, but that's very short notice.
In other news, if anyone wants to play tennis/golf around Chapel Hill on the weekends, hit me up, my regular partners are too busy with their own lives, it seems. :)
-
Charlotte resident here. I'd be into meeting, not sure about driving all the way to Raleigh though. I got one of my coworkers addicted MMM as well so that's at least the two of us. Hopefully something can come together closer this way.
I recently started a couple of projects MMM or ERE type projects. I'm building a tiny house on a trailer, I got my plans from Tumbleweed Homes. My trailer is coming back from the welder any day now and I can start laying the subfloor and insulation. http://www.tumbleweedhouses.com/
The other project I'm working on is biking more. I'm trying to limit my driving miles to 10,000. Which doesn't sound like a hard goal but my office is 13 miles from my house. I estimate it's about 6,500 per year in commuting.
-
I propose we meet Feb 16 somewhere in the Triangle. I'm open to suggestions for locations - bar, restaurant, someone's house?
And Paul, I have a feeling I won't provide much of a challenge, but I'd hit around some tennis balls on the weekend.
-
My schedule is open for Feb 16. Who else?
@fire don't worry I'm only a recreational player myself. I'll PM you specifics when this ridiculous weather stops.
-
Feb 16 is open for me after noon or so.
-
Let's say 1:00 on Sat., Feb 16. Any preferences for location? Maybe Tyler's in Durham?
-
Just found out my morning obligation on Saturdays is shifting to noon-1ish. I'd be able to do something around 2 at the earliest.
-
What if we shoot for early evening then. Like 5:00?
-
I' m almost positive I can come if there are any other Charlotte folks willing to carpool. ??
-
Hi Everyone!
I've been an MMM reader for at least a year, but didn't think to register until I saw this NC thread. I'm in Cary, and would love to meet up in the Triangle area or carpool to Charlotte.
-
Early evening is fine for me, still on Feb 16. I can vouch for Tyler's- great beer selection and reasonably priced food too. For those unfamiliar with Durham, it's in the middle of the American Tobacco campus in downtown Durham.
It sounds like we have jpo, fire and myself confirmed, potentially with ph0rque, and Karen if she can find other folks from Charlotte.
-
Yes, I'm in for Tyler's on Feb. 16th. Should have made that more clear!
-
Oh cool, I'm glad I stumbled across this thread. I'm in Cary and would totally come to a Triangle meetup. I'm putting Tyler's on the 16th on my calendar right now!
-
Oh, if the time shifts much later I won't be able to make it. Friend's wedding starts at 5. I could potentially do 2:00 though, if that works for everyone else.
-
I can't make it this time, but it sounds like they'll be a group--I'll join in next time around. Have fun!
-
Sherr,
I'm good with 2:00 if it works for everybody else. is 2:00 at Tyler's in Durham on February 16th good for everyone? I'm sure we'll be there for a while so if people needed to come a little late that would be fine too.
-
2pm is good for me...
-
2pm good for me as well. See y'all then.
-
Sounds good to me. :)
-
Sadly something has just come up and I'm not going to be able to make it. Sorry about that guys, I was really looking forward to it! We'll have to do it again some time.
-
Sorry you can't make it, Sherr. I'll be at Tyler's at 2:00 tomorrow. I'll be wearing a faded Cal baseball cap and I have glasses. PM me if you want to get my cell phone number and make it a little easier to organize. Looking forward to meeting everyone else tomorrow.
-
I will also be there tomorrow, will text fire if I happen to be running late. Will possibly give the mustache signal (http://ballislife.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/Untitleds-1.jpg).
-
Sorry you can't make it sherr.
I'll be there. look for a early to mid twenties white guy, short brown hair. Most likely holding a beer.
-
I hope you guys have fun! I'm not going to come this time.....even John (DH) is sick and can´t carpool with me. Maybe next time we can get the Charlotte crew together to make the trip.
-
Assuming the meet up isn't cancelled because of the snow, I'll be there by 2pm.
-
I don't see the snow being a problem, it's not sticking on the roads (here at least).
-
I am still in, snow or shine. Grew up in the north so it's no big deal.
-
I'll be there. Like Paul said the snow's still not sticking.
-
Hey guys, that was a really awesome meetup. Let's do it again sometime soon, perhaps in a few months.
-
I agree, it was very nice to put faces on fellow Mustachians. I would love an outdoor event, preferably before the summer apocalypse^W heat is upon us.
-
Had a good time, if we meet up again I'd be in.
-
I'm glad to hear you all had a good time!
-
Charlotte stash-to-be here. Would love to make it to the next event.
-
I live on the coast of NC (Jacksonville) but I have an aunt that lives in Charlotte and could probably make a meetup in that area
-
Hi ace and layzbones, good to see some new names in here. I had a great time getting to put a face to the name with ph0rque, Paul, and jpo and his girlfriend at our meetup in Durham. I suppose meeting up at a bar wasn't the most mustachian locale but it was pretty handy given the snow we were having that weekend. I'd definitely love to do it again and get to meetup with the Charlotte contingency too. I'd be willing to switch up hosting locations and carpool down to Charlotte if any of the other Triangle crew are up for it. Hopefully it won't take us as long to organize the second meetup as it did the first.
-
Anyone interested in a Charlotte meet up some time soon?
-
I'm in Charlotte and would love to join in since I missed the Durham meet up.
-
I'd be game to come down to Charlotte to meetup and I'd be willing to drive if any of the other Triangle mustachians want to carpool down there.
-
Ditto. Never seen Charlotte; if we can get enough people to fill up a car, count me in.
-
I would also be in on the Triangle -> Charlotte carpool.
-
3 of us is more than enough for me to be willing to drive. That leaves room for 2 more if anyone is interested. Charlotte crew, when were you thinking of doing this?
-
I keep checking back to see if any of the other Charlotte folks have suggestions for a date.... if there is a meetup I hope to be able to come. I'm not up to planning it or even suggesting a date because I'm having surgery in a few days. I've spent a lot of time getting ready (making extra meals to freeze, catching up on house chores and yard work) so my downtime will be less stressful hopefully. Anyway, I'll keep checking back and hope to meet you guys sometime soon!
-
Hi! We are in Charlotte. The Huz and I have always spent far less than we've earned but discovering MMM a few weeks ago has totally turned our philosophy upside down.
If there are people in Charlotte still wanting to meet up or people willing to come to Charlotte - we'd be happy to host a potluck picnic in our backyard. We did this for my daughter's birthday party a few weeks ago - picnic blankets and all. It was a lot of fun.
Any interest?
-
Unfortunately, I'm out of town for a wedding on the 23rd. In DC for a small house building workshop on the 30th.
I think if you have 3 people can make a date you should go for it. The key thing is just to get started, I'll do my best to make the second meeting.
OT--sorry: When and where is the workshop?
-
I will be in town the week of June 3 for work in Charlotte uptown. I could only meet during the week at night - not sure if anyone is up for a dinner out (not super Mustachian) or something similar.
-
Charlotte looks to be on hold for the moment. Any of the Triangle gang care to meetup after work sometime this week? Maybe Monday or Thursday?
-
@tag that's very generous of you! There is definitely interest from us Trianglites, we just need more Charlotteans.
@fire, I can do Thursday. Where were you thinking?
-
Thursday would work. I seem to recall I'm the sole Durhamite so I'd be happy to meet somewhere out in Chapel Hill or Cary if that's more convenient for everyone else. But in that case I'll leave the exact location up to someone else. If you want to do Durham again, maybe Bull McCabe's so we can grab some drinks?
-
Thursday would work for me as well. I live in Cary and work in Downtown Raleigh, for what it's worth location-wise.
-
Durham is the easiest for me as well, since I work downtown. I believe jpo and ph0rque are both around Cary, hopefully they can make it. See you all tomorrow at Bull McCabe then? 630 maybe?
-
Sadly it was too last-minute before I noticed this thread and my wife has other plans for me. I will not be there. I look forward to the next one.
-
Alright seeing the lack of enthusiasm for this one (it is pretty last minute to be fair), let's just push it back.
I propose the window of June 10-16.
-
Hey I'm a lurker but signed up to respond. I'm in Durham and if there is a meetup in Durham I'd be interested. I'll keep posted to see what develops. I believe there is a free concert at American Tobacco campus June 7th, but it may be kind of noisy.
-
Alright seeing the lack of enthusiasm for this one (it is pretty last minute to be fair), let's just push it back.
I propose the window of June 10-16.
I will be around during that week but am on call. If something arises I may have to log on.
-
@ tag and saving to freedom: I'm game for a Charlotte meet up! The backyard potluck sounds perfect, but if any of you want to try an after work meet up while savingtofreedom is in town this week I'm in!
-
@carolinakaren - if there's a Charlotte meetup on a weekend I would still be interested in joining it and I'd be willing to drive down any of the other Triangle gang that want to go also
@Paul and the rest of the Triangle group - I'd be up to meet next week. Would Monday or Thursday work for everybody else?
-
Out of town this weekend for the concert but free all of next week.
-
Hey All,
I am new to the site and just wanted to post a hello to all the Mustachians in North Carolina. I live in Charlotte and will be keeping an eye on hangouts in the area.
-

Carolinakaren and smedleysam do you guys happen to be near uptown? I may be able to meet Friday at 4 or 5 for an hour or maybe Saturday morning early - on sat I will be 20 or so min southeast of Charlotte. I wish I saw this post earlier!
-
Triangle gang, are we on for this week? Paul, do you have a time and place in mind?
-
@saving to freedom: So sorry I'm late seeing your post! I had some major schedule changes and am close enough to uptown that Friday would have been an excellent time for a meet up. Unfortunately I didn't check the forum that day! Damnit!
-

CarolinaKaren - we will have to try again next time I am in town.
-
@savingtofreedom: Ahh I just got back in town today! But I do live about 15 min away from uptown :)
-
Fire, I'm still in, no particular place in mind. The weather is pretty horendous for the next few days, though.
-
I may be in depending on where and when. Will be on call, so will need to have laptop access.
-
How about Thursday at 7:00 at Bull McCabe's in Durham?
-
Looks like there hasn't been any Charlotte meetup talks in a bit - but my wife and I would love to get together with any other mustachians in the area - we're in Fort Mill, SC, just over the border.
-
I'm not far from you guys in south Charlotte area. Last time it was mentioned there was a group of triangle mustachians who discussed carpooling down for a meet up. Hopefully we can get enough interest to justify a get together!
-
I'm in Rock Hill, SC, really close you scamutz and carolinakaren. Let's try to put something together in the area!
-
We're in! I'm not much of the party planner type, but let me know when a good time is for you guys and we'll try to get together.
-
I would be interested in attending a meet up. It looks like I missed the previous event. I only just realized there was a setting to auto alert me to new posts. Duh.. that was stupid. I'll stay up to date from now on.
Not to be too off topic but this Duke Energy page (most people in NC are using Duke Electric) has some good discounts on LED bulbs. I bought a few and it's worked out well. The shipping costs do eat into the savings though.
http://www.duke-energy.com/residential-savings-store/
-
One more item, I think it would be great if we pinned our locations to the mustache map. It could turn out that some of us live relatively close together. :)
https://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/meetups-and-social-events/mustache-map!/
-
Good Idea! I'm pinned, but you have to flip to the second page.
-
Spedley - Excellent, thanks for pointing out the second page tab at the bottom of the map. Too bad it doesn't allow all icons to be displayed on one page. Maybe the next round of google maps will allow it.
btw - I go for a night bike ride with a group on Thursday evenings at 7:30. We leave from performance bikes in the park road shopping plaza right near you. We usually ride for about an hour and a half, casual pace of about 11 mph, it's a social ride. You should join us if you're into biking.
-
USPS - that is awesome! I'm in for next week! Tonight my partner and I are meeting up with her family.
I ride a bright red felt road bike, maybe you have seen me biking around before :)
-
Hey new to the forums anybody on this thread still living in Durham? I didn't see any other pins on the map...
-
@ice813 - I'm in Durham but I'm not on the map. A few of the other members in this thread are close to Durham in Raleigh or Chapel Hill. If you're interested in doing a meetup just propose a date. We seem to have a tough time finding dates that work for everyone but I would definitely be up for another meetup.
-
I'm now also in Durham. Or rather I will be once I get back in the country at the end of the month.
-
I'm in Cary (but don't hold that against me ).
-
Wow! I didn't check the forum for awhile and our little meetup page has seen some activity lately. I'm glad Alan mentioned the auto alert setting for new posts, if I can figure out how to do that it would keep me on top of things a little better! It would be great to finally get a Charlotte area meet up. Most of my weekends are open. Maybe we could also revisit the backyard potluck idea?
-
Paul der Krake just mentioned in my introduction thread (https://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/welcome-to-the-forum/hi-i-am-rootofgood!-retired-at-33-life-is-good!/) that I might want to stop by here and say hello. So "Hello!".
I'm in the Raleigh area a few miles from downtown kind of near the Midtown N Hills area (but to the east where house prices are 1/3 of those in the North Hills area!). I'm up for a meetup sometime in or around Raleigh.
Slumming it at the park just to hang out or for a picnic would be cool. There's also a neat little greenway just inside the Beltline that would be decent for a little nature walk. Truly mustachian. Less mustachian might be a laid back brewpub or bar with drink specials. Natty Greene's near Glenwood South/Downtown Raleigh has $2 pint night Thursdays and $3 pints on Sundays I think. Been there a couple times and it's not annoying (for a bar). Open to suggestions though as I'm not a bar hopper by any means.
I don't mind doing a little organizing if there's interest. I can throw up a collaborative google spreadsheet to help plan (availability, location, etc).
I don't have a good feel for the folks on the forum, but I assume youngish 20- and 30- somethings? I have 3 kids that may tag along if there are other kids that might be there (ages 1 to 8).

At the one I went to I think we were all 20s-30s.
Looking at the Mustache Map it looks like there are a lot more Mustachians in the Triangle now than got together a while back.

I'm only 33 years young, but we have an 8 year old so that makes me an old dude to some. I'm learning to use the twitter if that helps.
I'll check back here periodically to see if there is any interest in a meetup.
-
I'd be cool with hosting a get together here in Charlotte or just attending one. The next few months are pretty open for me.
-
i'm mid 20's, no kids. Am down to meet up in the triangle almost any weekend but can't do weekdays because I work nights...
-
I'm up for a meetup, it's been a while since our last one. I'm good with doing it in Raleigh since we met in Durham last time. RootOfGood, want to pick a time and place? I'll never object to a good brew. :)

RALEIGH/DURHAM/CARY/CHAPEL HILL MMM'ers:
I'll throw out a time and place and let's see if there is interest and availability.
Picnic Lunch
Saturday, October 12 at 11:30 am
The Rose Garden (https://maps.google.com/maps?q=Rose+Garden&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=&ll=35.791955,-78.668665&spn=0.001118,0.001635&t=h&z=20&vpsrc=6&iwloc=A&cid=10587904372580099909) in Raleigh
If you don't know where it is, it is just north of the NC State Campus and right behind the Raleigh Little Theater. Very central for those in Raleigh, and on the Chapel Hill/Durham side of Raleigh not far off the interstate for those that want to commute down.
Nice free park. Free parking all around, just read the signs. Bring your own picnic lunch and beverages (maybe skip the alcohol, it'll be 11:30 am and who gets drunk in the morning?). I'm up for potluck if it doesn't get too complicated. We'll probably bring a big bag of chips or something to share anyway. May have Mrs. RootofGood and kids in tow (ages 1, 7, and 8), if you wanted to bring significant others and/or kids.
Unless the theater happens to be open, there aren't any bathrooms in the park, but there's McD's, some other shopping, and 2 libraries about 1/4 mile away that are well known for decent bathrooms in addition to mediocre burgers and stacks of books (respectively).
No axe murderers allowed. Unless you are bringing really good sandwiches for all of us.
-
Count me in.
Any Durhamites with an interest to cycle there? I can work out an exact route, it should be around 60 miles round trip. Failing that, carpool buddies?
-
Unfortunately I'm out of town that weekend, I'll have to catch the next one.
-
Probably out. Closing on a house that Friday and Saturday will probably be horrifically busy.
-

60 miles. Hard core man. If you cycle, check out trails through umstead and from art museum to near NC state. Cool scenery from when we have walked/hiked, but no idea if a cycling route is available the whole way, and some may be mtb trails in umstead (no idea for sure).
I can haul extra water for your refills if necessary, although there is a water fountain at the park right across the street from the rose garden too. Can't recall seeing a water fountain @ Rose Garden.
-
19th of October, same time same place? Any more availability for that date? The State Fair is that weekend, but shouldn't impact the rose garden at all.
-
Let's use this for scheduling, much easier:

Thanks! I started doing a Google Drive Form to facilitate the date selection and then scrapped the idea. I figured it would be easier to post a date go with it (not so!)
Technology!

Weekend of the 19th works best for me. Maybe on the bike, I'm afraid my piece of junk bike might die en route though!
-
So far Sunday the 27th is the best date available for all 4 people that responded to the doodle.
Please go to the doodle poll and put in your availability. It takes 2 minutes and can help us all plan out the date.

I will not be able to make it that Sunday, but I hope you guys have a great time! I'm glad to hear uspsfanalan is interested in a meet up in Charlottle too. Anyone else out there wanna try something down this way?
One of these days we will all get to do a bigger get together I hope! Although I don't fit the 20´s-30´s demographic I'm sure we will have plenty of other things in common! ;) I'm 41 so just barely older.... no one will even notice.....

I'm 33, so probably closer to your demographic than to someone in their low 20's. :)

Something came up (gov't shutdown affected house closing date) and I changed my availability on the doodle accordingly. Sorry if that throws a wrench into the plans.
Edit: may still try to make it but wouldn't count on it.
-
Anyone still interested in the October 27th meetup in Raleigh? The doodle shows ice183, Paul, and me as available. I'm still available but haven't heard any confirmations from others.
Anyone interested in a later date?
-
Hey all. I'm not available the 27th, but would be interested in meeting up -- especially around Charlotte :)
-
27th should work for me. I'd still be up for meeting.
-
Somehow I missed this earlier, but I'm up for either date next weekend. I'll plan for the 27th unless I someone posts otherwise.
-
Looks like a critical mass is available for Sunday Oct 27th at 11:30. See you guys down at the Rose Garden. The forecast says sunny and 63, so it should be a perfect (and slightly cool) day for meeting outside.
Note: I created a new thread specifically for this Oct 27 meetup here: https://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/meetups-and-social-events/raleigh-nc-mmmmeetup-october-27-2013/
Please comment/reply in that thread for meetup related issues. Thanks!
-
Meetup report: five of us made it out to the Rose Garden in Raleigh today (plus my wife and 3 kids). Beautiful day to be outside! We talked for just a second about the next meetup, but didn't set a date or discuss any details.
-
Hi fellow NC Mustachians,
I'm currently studying at NC State. Would definitely be up for a meetup in the Raleigh/Triangle area!
Oh and thanks Justin/RootofGood and Stephen for bringing this part of the forum to my attention

Hey Jake!
-
Hi jpoysti. I'd be up for another meetup.
-
Alright, it's now March, which means that we could get something organized and shoot for April to give everyone some time to clear their schedules. Because we're all so busy and all that.
Thoughts on location? Time of the day?
-
Heyo, I got directed over to this thread -- new to the boards, relatively new to North Carolina. I am a Canadian living in Durham and working as a postdoc at Duke. Hope there are some cool NC Mustachians. :)
-
I'm in Columbia SC, and would be interested in April as well!
-
Hi! I'm new to the forums here. I live in Raleigh - moved here just over a year ago from NoVa/DC Metro. I'm enjoying the lower cost of living a less traffic! I am definitely up for a get together in the triangle area. Looking forward to getting to know folks here. :)
-
I'm up for the next meet up. I can look for a local park or other meeting area in Raleigh. And I'm up for driving to Durham/Cary. I think last time everyone besides me was coming from Durham or Cary.
I can also offer my house as a gathering place but it is a little farther from Durham than the Rose Garden where we met last fall. I'm roughly situated near the I-440 Beltline and Capital Boulevard.
-
Hey, I'm in Chapel Hill and a total noob to making, saving, and investing money (mustachianism) but I'd love to join a triangle meet up.
-
Stephen invited me to post here a few months back and I didn't even see it so sorry Stephen. My wife and I live in Charlotte and are new to the adventure of Moustacianism but would love to meet some like minded individuals. Will keep an eye out on the thread.
Matt
-
Glad to see another Charlotte person posting. We're going to have to have a meet up at some point here.
-
Hi all, just moved to charlotte. I'd be willing to meet up with any mustachians around here.
-
I recently moved to Durham and would be up for a Mustachian meetup.
-
Hi Tar Heels!
Apologies for hijacking your meetup thread, but I have a quick question:
I'll be in Charlotte Tuesday and Wednesday on a business trip and I'm curious what fun, mustachian things there are to do around here? I'll be staying in a hotel downtown, without a car.
Thanks so much! I've never been to the South Eastern US and I'm really excited for my trip (even though I'll be working most of the time!)
-
North Carolina Mustachians:
I just received a media inquiry looking for young people seeking FI or ER that are willing to be interviewed about their ER goals. The article is on the topic of early retirees and the New Economy.
The journalist is located in Chapel Hill but can do phone/skype/email interviews. PM me and I can forward you her info if you're interested.

Eno River State Park? Durham folks can even bike. There's a rock quarry for swimming and paths for hiking and mountain biking. We could do a labor day meet up.

I LOVE the quarry. Let's do it.
-
I'm in for a labor day meetup next weekend. Would Saturday, the 30th work for other people?
-
That works for me.
I dorked out and made a spreadsheet to help organize Aug 30/Labour Day meetup. Please contribute:

I put down the names of people who relatively recently expressed interest in a triangle meetup - will message them if they don't see this...

Sorry! It should be fixed now.

Thanks for organizing, just need to confirm if my husband is coming, then I will respond.
-
Thanks for the PM Peppermint to let me know about this. Unfortunately, I am moving on the 30th and will not be able to make it. On the up side, I'm buying a house in Durham, so I should be around for a while. I'd love to go to a Mustachian meetup, so hopefully another one will come up soon!
-
So sorry that I am out, we are going camping which I completely forgot about.
-
Hi! Thanks for the PM. I am free on Saturday, so this works for me. Just let me what time and what I should bring. :) I'm looking forward to meeting some fellow mustachians.
-

I like fire's idea of meeting at his place and then taking one car there, because parking really does fill up fast. Let's say meet there at 10am? In my experience, the afternoon is way harder to find a spot because that's when every college student in the Triangle is now awake.
As to what to bring: swimsuit, drinking water, sunscreen & hat, floats if you have them (I'll have on or two extra).
-
I technically have no plans at this point but I have a few family events that may need my presence on Saturday. So I'm a definite maybe lol.
I'm coming from central Raleigh (Beltline at Capital Blvd) if any others are making the trek up to Durham and want to drive or ride with me if I end up going.
-
Morning's fine with me. Paul, do you want to carpool from central Durham? I think you live very nearby, I can come get you. But I don't have your contact info anymore.
-
PM sent to everyone who responded as yes or maybe. If anyone else wants to come at the last minute respond here or PM me and I'll add you to the PM thread.
-
I live in Durham and I just saw this. Can't make it tomorrow but would love to get together with some Mustachians at some point! Please include me on future threads.
-
10am works for me and we can meet at my place. I'll PM the yeses with the address.
-
Had a good time, always nice to see new faces. Thanks everyone for putting up with my ornery dog... she got a bath as soon as we got home.
-
Glad you made it out, jpo. We had a good turnout with myself, jpo, Paul Der Krake, peppermint, and Bourbon Belle and all got to hangout at the quarry in Eno on a beautiful day. We'll have to organize something else in the near future before there's no more warm weather.
-
Ack!!! Would have loved to make it.... didn't find this thread until today. +1 for planning another meeting soon!!
-
I had a great time yesterday, it was great to meet you all. Looking forward to another get together - before Christmas! ;)
-
Darn! I've been away from the forums and didn't see this till today! Glad y'all had fun and maybe I can make it next time.
-
So it's a lovely warm day and Durham Beerfest is on in town which reminded me of the NC MMM crew. Anyone wanna go to the quarry again soon before fall makes it too cold to swim?
-
Hey all! We live in Chapel Hill and would love to attend a meet up in the Triangle area. Maybe something outdoorsy before it gets crazy-cold? I saw in past discussions that a bunch of NC people have dogs - I'd be down to do a Pup-stachian meet up, too!
Anna&Trevor
-
Alright y'all. What about the Saturday before Thanksgiving, the 22nd?
List of potential activities, in no particular order, just a brain dump, suggestions welcome:
- drinking beer
- park outing
- potluck
- defy gravity (http://www.defygravity.us/durham/Photos.aspx) (just kidding)
- bike ride around some town
- ice skating, if it takes us another 3 months to figure something out
So far we've done Raleigh and Durham (twice if the quarry counts as Durham), so we could do CH this time.
-
I can't do 11/22, I will be climbing at Pilot Mountain, but it's just a daytrip. Otherwise I'd like to meet up, any of those ideas sound fun!
-
If there is a meetup closer to Charlotte I'd love to join! Triangle area is a little far for a day trip.
-
Bumping this for a Triangle meetup if there's still interest. I propose going for drinks, for simplicity's sake, but I'm open.
What do you guys think?
-
Just moved to the Raleigh-Durham area, would definitely be interested in a Triangle meetup!
-
Someone is considering moving to the Raleigh NC area. Maybe a few of us would care to comment. I lived in Raleigh for a while but it was 10 years ago.
http://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/ask-a-mustachian/raleigh-north-carolina/
-
Hello all,
My girlfriend (27) and I (29) just moved to Charlotte a month ago and we don't know one here. We would like to meet people here and MMM seems like a great filter to meet friends who are frugal. Let me know if you would like to meet up.
-
Durham/Raleigh area folks here with 2 kids (3 and 6) -- we could do a meetup with or without them. Just let us know when/where!
-
Hey - live in CLT and would love to meetup with like-minded folks in the area.
-
Raleigh area couple in our thirties with a toddler would love to meet up with other local Mustachians.
I would totally meet up without the baby, but if anyone else is interested in a kid friendly event that would be really exciting.
-
Sounds like we have enough critical mass for another attempt!
Where would everyone like to go? It's little cold to go swimming, so now is the time for everyone to pitch their favorite bar, restaurant, or any other building that can accommodate a small group.
-
Keeping this alive as I would be interested. Perhaps those in Charlotte would like to meet uptown at a train stop? It's fun to walk around uptown.
Anyone use Meetup.com? I'm considering create a Mustache group for this purpose.

If people want to bring their kids, maybe the science museum in Raleigh? It's a fun place, free, has kid stuff.

Great idea, and one I thought about suggesting for kids (but didn't!). There's also the grassy plaza nearby at the Capitol for picnics (or one of 2 restaurants/lounges inside the museum where you can brown bag if you want or buy cheap food).
-
I'm in Western NC, but if something was put together for Charlotte it would be fun to make the trip!
-
I'm in Charlotte so if anything ever gets planned let me know via PM and I'll be there.
Plenty to do in this town.

That would be pretty cool. It could be listed as frugal or thrifty and maybe we'd find some non-MMM people that happen to have the same values.
-
Hi All,
I'm relatively new to Raleigh (almost 2 years), new to this thread (now), and new to MMM (< 1 year). I'd really like to try and attend the next get together you all have in the area and learn more about your strategies and successes. Currently married with no kids (yet) but on our way towards an early retirement.
Thanks and look forward to hearing from you all!
-
Hello! Just popping in here again to see if we can get around to organizing a Triangle meetup. There's still the science museum idea, or now that the spring weather is getting nice, lots of outdoor options.
-
Hey all, I'm in the Wilmington area, but I would be interested in a meet-up in the Raleigh area if one was organized.
-
New proposed meetup date: May 16, 2015 (Saturday) at 11am
Where?
Sarah P Duke Gardens, in Durham. Kid friendly, dogs allowed with leash. Plenty of space everywhere at this time of day. The crowds only really show up after 3pm.
What?
Potluck brunch. We all need to eat (if you don't, please come anyway and tell me your secret), so bring whatever you want. It shouldn't be too hot at this time of day, and there are shaded areas. Should it rain, I am willing to host indoors at my nearby apartment as a backup.
-
Awesome I thought!
Then realized our 3 kids have dental appointments at 11 am exactly the same day. And we're going out of the country not long after that for 2 months and might not be able to reschedule before departing. :(
Hanging out with peeps, structural integrity of children's teeth... Hmmm.... :)
-
Sounds like a plan. My wife and I will plan on being there. Is there a particular place in the park that we would meet at?
-
Count me in! I technically have phone duty that day but this is the perfect excuse for me to get out of it :)
-

There is wide grass area at one of the edges of the garden that I had in mind, see the map attached to this post
Full map of the gardens can be found here:

-
Awesome, glad to have just seen this, I'll put it on my clendar and might bring my bf if he's interested.
-
How late are you guys planning on staying? I think we're booked up in Raleigh for a kids birthday party till 11 or 12, but hope to head up that way if anyone will still be there.
The plan is to bring the kids, too. Anyone else bringing their kids?

If history is any indication, meetups have usually run for about two hours, so that's more or less what I had in mind. I don't mind accomodating the schedule a little bit (maybe push to 1230?) if everybody is cool with the proposed change.

That would work way better for us. I'm trying to figure out what time we'll be done in Raleigh so we can head that way.

Works for me!
-
I'm also fine to move to 12:30.
-
12:30 is fine with us
-
Everybody who had responded so far is cool with 1230, so 1230 it shall be.
The next Triangle MMM meetup is now a potluck brunch/lunch/whatever on May 16, 2015 (Saturday) at 12:30 in Duke Gardens, in Durham.
We currently have 5 people confirmed plus a likely delegation from the RootOfGood household whose size remains to be determined. If anybody else is planning on attending, please respond and subscribe to this thread to make sure you get updates.
-
We'll definitely be there and might even get there before 12:30 since it looks like we'll be free in Raleigh around 11 or 11:30. We've never been to Duke gardens so will definitely be checking it out if we get there early. Yay being tourists in our own town! :) It should be me, Mrs. RootofGood and the 3 kids. Hoping some others will come up with some kids to bring along, too.
-
Hey, my response is way late but I'll be there. :)

I plan to bring some homemade banana chocolate chip muffins... anyone opposed?

Just started with the forums, and sadly, I have other plans for the proposed weekend (I'm meeting up with other work friends).
I have subscribed for notifications on this thread for future meet ups (I currently live in Mebane).

-
Excellent! If I'm counting this right we now have 9 confirmed (plus 3 children), which is I believe the most we've ever had. Looking forward to seeing some new faces!
I plan to bring some homemade banana chocolate chip muffins... anyone opposed?
That sounds delicious. I am planning on making a bean salad.
-
Oh great! I can make this.
Planning to attend, possibly with spouse and toddler.
I will bring a veggie and/or grain salad.
-
BTW: I'm trying to get DW to come with, so I'm possibly "2". I live the keto lifestyle so I'll be bringing something definitely gluten-free and low-carb.
-
I'm hoping to figure out a meatalicious dish that's hot.
Any thoughts on plates, utensils, drinks, etc? BYOB all that stuff? I can probably bring a couple of half gallons of water, disposable cups, plates, utensils, etc.
Do they have water fountains and bathrooms in the gardens?
-
We're planning on bringing a breakfast casserole. I can try to bring along some paper plates.

Any thoughts on plates, utensils, drinks, etc? BYOB all that stuff? I can probably bring a couple of half gallons of water, disposable cups, plates, utensils, etc.
Do they have water fountains and bathrooms in the gardens?
There is at least one water fountain that I know of. I am bringing a picnic basket with enough plates, cups, and utensils for 4. If someone volunteers to bring a few more, then we will have enough for everybody. No need to have everone carry their own kitchen.
-
They have water fountains and restrooms in the visitor centre at the front. I don't think they have them further in the gardens.
-
There is at least one other restroom in the gardens but I can't recall how close it is to where we're going to be - sorry not super helpful!
I am baking bread tonight and will bring that along with some bread accouterments.
*Edited to say what I will bring.
-
There is a restroom (and water fountain) next to the fish pond right by where we're meeting.
-
Thanks to everyone who came out today, especially if you were coming from far away!
It was nice meeting with like-minded MMM readers and putting faces to screen names. Mad props on making the delicious food happen, I don't think I will need much of a dinner tonight.
-
Nice to meet everyone! Looking forward to the next meetup!
-
Hey all - had a GREAT time today! I'm sorry I didn't get to meet EVERYone but it seemed a great time was had by all. Let's do it again sometime!
BTW: We talked about cargo bikes. i came home and found this in my email:
http://electricbikereport.com/electric-cargo-bike-guide/
-
It was great to sit down with you all today! And the food was awesome (almost like we coordinated what we brought).
-
It was great getting to meet more MMM-ers in person today! We should definitely try to make this a semi-regular thing :)
-
We enjoyed meeting everyone. Not sure how often we will make the drive, but we'll attempt to come to at least 1 or 2 a year.
-
Here's the Cute Overload, as promised.
This is Luna, our white Dwarf Netherland rabbit, asleep in her favorite chair. All you can see are her rear legs and her puffball tail. What's unusual is that she is lying on her side, completely asleep.
-
We enjoyed meeting everyone. Not sure how often we will make the drive, but we'll attempt to come to at least 1 or 2 a year.
So you'll be attending all of them then!
More seriously, we can do the quarry again in a few months when it's hot. It requires a little more organization, but I'm happy to play benevolent dictator again.

It's a water hole in Eno River State Park.
Here's a picture:

I'd definitely be down to visit the quarry :)
-
Well, I shouldn't be surprised, you probably have a drawer with a Speedo for every day of the week! :-) :-)
-
yay quarry!

I moved to Raleigh last fall and would love to come to the next meetup if there is one. Posting so I get updates.

Following, I'm in Raleigh as well and would come to come to the next meetup.

*love to come to the next meetup.

Can I get some comments from folks about chiefly what area around Raleigh you live in? I tell people "Raleigh" but I'm actually 18 miles north, up in Youngsville.
There are lots of venues in north raleigh for a meetup, plenty of common greenspaces and picnic areas. Wake Forest even has a neat little "gazebo" in downtown, sitting in a parking lot, that would make a good meetup spot. AND, they have a brewpub that would be an even more AWESOME meetup spot.
I'd be interested in planning a kind of North Raleigh sub-group meeting where we just land at a brewpub or a civilized bar/pub for a little while and talk shop about frugalism, MMM and investing.
-
I'm in southwest Virginia, but I'd definitely love to join the Carolina 'Staches if it's within a couple hours drive!
-
I haven't attended any meetups yet but have considered it. I currently live in Fuquay Varina Southwest of Raleigh but I've lived in a few areas around Raleigh/Wake Co. I started out in Southern Granville county not far from Youngsville then to Wake Forest and then Zebulon. My office is still just outside Youngsville on US1 but I work from home 99% of the time. Driving 40+ miles across Wake County isn't fun.....ever.
-
We're about two miles from downtown Raleigh. North Raleigh sounds good for a meetup. Any particular place you were thinking? There are also several breweries that have openned in the area that may be a good location to meet up. Big Boss, NickelPoint or BlackJack Brewing Company. There's normally a lot of seating, reasonably priced beers and food trucks.

Good points, all, about the brewing companies and pubs! I love the idea of landing at a pub, but I don't love the idea of spending $5 for a pint pour. I'm wondering if there's some way to find a place to meetup that won't compromise our frugality, and possibly, bring some HOMEBREW? I'm wondering how many of you are homebrew-curious and might be interested in trying some free of charge.
I'm thinking of a park-like atmosphere with a couple picnic tables and a freestanding permanent charcoal grill. Then anyone who wanted to bring something to grill could do so. (not sure I'd try that in this heat, but hey, nice to have the option).
I guess we'd need to find some place with public bathroom accessibility. That was the HUGE WIN at Duke Gardens: they had public bathrooms right across the field from where we met. Of course, landing at a brewpub solves that problem nicely, too....
-
I'm 4 miles from downtown Raleigh along US 1 so North Raleigh is very convenient to me of course (though I'm more of a Midtown resident).
I can't think of any free outdoor places with bathrooms and grills that also allow drinking in public. I think most city/county parks frown on that sort of thing. There's a park in my neighborhood that has bathrooms, grills, and a covered picnic shelter (again, 4 miles from downtown), but it's a city park so alcohol is technically a no no. Homebrew sounds great though I'm no brewer.
I'd be up for meeting at a coffee place too. You can usually get that kind of brew for a buck or two and sit for hours.

I'm starting to like the "meet indoors" idea way better than meeting outside, whether it's a coffee place or a brewpub or whatever. I realized after posting my earlier comment that it's gonna be hot as hell for the forseeable future around here and I'd like to have another meetup sooner rather than later.
RootofGood, what would you think about landing some place like Big Boss? I don't know if they'd want anyone bringing homebrew, but I'm sure it's cool inside and the bathrooms are good.
And of course, there's any number of very excellent brewpubs in downtown, but I figure Big Boss has space and would be less crowded...
Thoughts?
-
Yeah the heat pretty much rules out outdoor venues if you want to get one going soon. I don't think the homebrew meetup idea is really viable unless someone is gracious enough to host in their own home.
-
One free option is the meeting rooms at Wake County Public Libraries. No food and drinks unfortunately, but you can reserve the room itself for free. I imagine water and maybe coffee is allowed. The best north Raleigh library might be North Regional Library and they have a 30 person conference room available. The facility is almost brand new so should be pretty decent.
Also, if there are any faculty or students at NCSU or Duke, they might be able to reserve a room that allows food and drinks too.
-
I'm in Raleigh and would love to meet up with folks. Anyone free to meet in mid-july?
-
Anyone for the Quarry? How does August 2 sound? It's hot, nows the time!

It's too short notice for me, but I'd be down a couple weekends from now.

Which quarry in Raleigh? The one off Duraleigh? Heard there's a nice hiking trail around it but haven't done it (I assume it's private property/trespassing?!).

I think she means the quarry in Rolesville, north/northeast of Raleigh. It's a well-known swimmin hole and scuba training center. (BTW: I won't be there, I don't do the swimming thing.)
-
I mean the one north of durham (Also north of Raleigh, but could be others? That are "north" of Raleigh) but either way it seems we don't have critical mass for these weekend! Some other time 😃
-
I might be down for the quarry this coming Sunday (8/9). I live in central Durham about 15 min away, happy to drive from there.

Haven't been to a meetup yet (just moved back to the area!) but following this thread for future meetups. We live in North Durham, about a mile from the West Point on the Eno, so a quarry meetup would be super convenient!
Oh also, has anyone considered making a facebook group/meetup.com group for triangle mustachians? It might be a little bit more convenient than a forum post, and might get more people outside of the forum to join.
-
Mefla, southern hippie, why don't you run with the brewery idea?
Pick a place and a date, make an announcement. I suspect there are enough people following this thread that it would work well enough.

I like the way you think PdK. I have a place I'm considering and I even have a couple ideas for a presentation:
http://compassrosebrewery.com/ is where I would start.
I'd like to start out with a program on bicycles. Not safety stuff, just talking about the bike itself, what's good, what's not and what kind of equipment you should expect a bike to have at certain price points. Indeed, I have two bikes I could use in the presentation: a "cheap" bike and a new-ish "expensive" bike (that I didn't pay a lot for, and I can explain that too...)
Now, here's another idea I've got: Don't have just ONE meeting. Have a series of three meetings, all in breweries located in each of the three points of the triangle. That way we really make it easier for anyone who wants to, to ride a bike to the meeting.
The only thing that kinda bugs me? The fact that we'd be meeting somewhere that you might be expected to cough up some cash for beer. I believe any meeting where you have to think about spending even one dollar might be infringing on mustachian principles.
Anyway: I'm thinking, pondering, trying to come up with something that's as mustachian as possible....

Hey, another Durhamite here! What's going down?

I was thinking Fullsteam or Tyler's Taproom for a Durham meetup. Any better venues one might consider?

Fullsteam is always a good place to meet.

I'm down for a Durham meetup!

Hi all. Just introducing myself and adding my vote of approval for a Durham meetup. (I live in Durham and also spend time in Raleigh most weekends.) I will be beginning what I am calling a "long sabbatical" at the end of next month, so I am eager to meet with others and learn from their experiences.
P.S. - I was pleasantly surprised to see disc golf mentioned on this thread, which is one of my favorite things to do. If anyone is interested in meeting up for a casual round, let me know. Beginners are welcome too. I have discs you can borrow.
P.P.S. - Thanks to Justin from Root of Good for pointing me to this thread.
-
We have a "Southeastern Mustachians" Closed group on Facebook. Check it out and join. Some folks from North Carolina are there. Some of you may already be. Thanks.
-
thelongsabbatical and I sat down for a few hours this past weekend at Starbucks* and had a mini meetup of sorts. He's legit and about to "semi-retire" as we might describe it, but "long sabbatical" is also certainly appropriate.
* Starbucks, the place I go about 1x per year to rent a chair for a few hours to meet strangers from the internet in a safe environment :)

Hi RoG - can you think of any place in Raleigh we could have a little meetup where I could bring some homebrew to share? Older son and I did five batches recently that all came out beautiful and are really tasty for folks who like IPAs.
I'd like for us all to land at Compass Rose Brewing, but I'm trying to come up with a venue that won't imply "spending", but where we can bring stuff if we want. For free, my homebrew is a hell of a deal compared to buying a $4-$5 pint pour.

It was a pleasure to talk with Justin RoG! We are truly privileged to have an early retiree in our area who is so thoughtful and generous with his time and knowledge.

I would not turn down a homebrew opportunity. Based on my quick Googling, it sounds like Raleigh parks allow alcohol, but you need to sign a waiver. More info here: http://www.city-data.com/forum/raleigh-durham-chapel-hill-cary/158961-looking-place-hold-large-picnic.html

HEY, wait a minute...I think I'm jealous. :-)

I looked around Raleigh Parks and Rec site some more. Looks like you can get an alcohol permit but it's $50. And other parks say "consumption of alcohol on City of Raleigh property is prohibited and you'll be arrested". So it's $50 plus you have to rent a shelter or a facility. Which might still be cheaper if split than paying $5/pint at a local brewery but probably not worth the hassle.
Otherwise, I can't really think of anywhere that you can drink (legally) that's free. Although there are always some guys in the park near me sipping on 40's or tall boys, so maybe it's okay? ;)
-
Posting this here because it might be of interest to others in the area: lecture from the founder of Durham-based SelfHelp credit union, on October 1 at UNC.

Dam. Thanks J for heading that up, much appreciated. I'm starting to think that a local brewery might actually be more friendly to bringing in a little homebrew (and letting others purchase if they so choose) than places that are typically not beer-friendly at all.
Now, I have located a place in RTP where we could have a meeting that I know is beer-and-food-friendly, called "The Frontier". But these folks are in the business of selling meeting space - so I'd have to check and see what, if anything, they might be interested in providing for free. The only real bummer about this is gettting there would be equally challenging from all points of the triangle, given that they are located at Park Offices in RTP (near where the old Governor's Inn used to be).
You know, I've often thought I wanted to turn my own garage into a place where I could have friends over, serve them homebrew from a tap and have great conversation, play table-tennis or watch a movie or something. People seem to be so reluctant to allow generally any kind of brew that I'm realizing this is a good idea.
But, I live in Youngsville, which is Bumfuck's Bumfuck for most people, so again we're talking a need to drive a car in many cases....(I would bike it, but then I'm crazy that way... :-) )
Otherwise, I can't really think of anywhere that you can drink (legally) that's free. Although there are always some guys in the park near me sipping on 40's or tall boys, so maybe it's okay? ;)
The way you said that is hilarious, even if the topic isn't. Bwahahaha....

Another possibility that occurred to me: My parents live in a neighborhood in N Raleigh that has a park/picnic area where I'm pretty sure alcohol would be fine, especially if it's just a handful of people. I will run it by my parents. It sounds like it would be a fairly centrally located spot for folks (near Six Forks and 540).

If you're able to get access, I'll vote "thumbs up".
I think I can handle the logistics of bringing homebrew on a bike. If not, I'll give in and drive my lil' 2000 Honda Insight. :-)
-
Another thought: anyone who lives in an apartment or neighborhood with a club house might be able to rent it out for free?
-
Newbie to forums, and MMM for that matter. I live in Raleigh and would love to meet other folks with some similar interests. I live in an apartment - I could check on what it would take to rent the club house. Complex is near Capital Blvd and 540.

James/mefla, I thought about suggesting The Frontier as well - great minds ;) It is an entrepreneur coworking space but as far as I know, free to work out of. I have a few friends who work out of there sometimes. I can double check with them, but honestly I think it could work if need be.
Ben, Thanks for posting that link to the talk on economic inequality at UNC. It's on my calendar :)

Excellent, excellent!
If we can draw a number of MMM'ers, I would be all over The Frontier. And I know they allow craft ale, they provide it for free on Thursdays after work. I'm thinking maybe I just pick a day in the future and we turn their Thursday-after-work party into a MMM meetup!
-
Hi all! Just wondering if there is any update on a date anyone was thinking of for a meetup. My DH and I are free most Thursday afternoons/evenings and most Saturdays as well.
-
The Frontier would work well for me. Would folks be able to meet there next Thursday at ~5:00?
P.S. - Today is the first day of my semi-retirement(!).

Congratulations on the semi-retirement!
So by my recollection that is Thursday, October 9th ~5pm (maybe we should say 5:30 to give us worker bees time to arrive?). I could make that work, I will tentatively put it on my calendar.
-
Sounds good. I'll plan to be there Thursday 10/8 at 5:30 PM. Hope others can join us.

I'm in. Thursday, 5:30pm. I've been meaning to get up there, apparently there's free (Bombshell Brewery) products?
-
I'll be at the Frontier from about 4:40 to 6:20. Have dinner plans so won't be able to stay too long! I'll try to position myself in the lobby or in a central area.
-
Thanks to everyone for planning! Sorry I put the wrong date in there, it's tomorrow the 8th (not the 9th). I look forward to seeing everyone.

I'm in. I'll be there early w/plans to head out early.
Does anyone have thought for a discussion topic? I was thinking about bringing up bikes or ebikes. I've got an ebike I could bring as a demonstration unit.
AND OF COURSE, FIRE and money and frugal topics!
-
My husband and I will be there! We'll probably be there around 5:30-6:30. Never been to the Frontier but it sounds cool! Mefla, it'd be interesting to see your ebike and hear your opinions on it.

Dang lemondirgopie, I'm sorry - I didn't hear back from anyone about the ebike, so I didn't bring it with me today. I'm so sorry! I have lots of photos and I can discuss, if you like.
-
I will get there before 5 to avoid the traffic nonsense. Free beer from 430!
Never been to the Frontier either, but I remember some faces, looking forward to seeing some new ones.
-
I'm aiming to arrive around 5:00 or a little earlier. I'm wearing a navy blue t-shirt and tan corduroys. Look forward to meeting you all soon.
-
We are at The Frontier. In the glass atrium in the back. Six of us in a corner couch. I have a Hawaiian flowery shirt on and jeans.
-
Nice seeing/meeting everyone tonight!

Seconded. Good turnout, team! I wouldn't be opposed to other mid-week events instead of the usual weekend meetup.

I had a GREAT time. My only frustrations are that we didn't have enough time (I didn't really get to visit with everyone as much as I wanted) and we had a hard time assembling everyone because there were so many other people.
I say we go back again, same time, same place, but claim that couch as "our own". And someone, bring a mustache!

Oh man, looks like I missed the meetup by taking an unintentional forum hiatus. :)

Sounds good! Weather is very nice outside this time of year so an outdoor meetup would be great.

Hey guys! Thought this might interest some of you. I just started a Buy Nothing group for Northwest Durham and I knew at least one other person might be in the area of the group.
Buy Nothing is a hyper-local gift economy, sort of like a neighborhood Craigslist on Facebook where no money or bartering is traded or done. You post something you need or want to give and see if there are any takers in your area. I heard about it through the Frugalwoods blog and saw that there was no group for my area and decided to start one. If you're not in the Northwest area then check out the Buy Nothing site to see if there's a group for your area: http://buynothingproject.org/find-a-group/
Here's the Durham Northwest group for anyone that might be in the area. In order to join just PM me so I can confirm you are in the area and I'll add you: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1169006066450038/
Attached is a map of the boundaries of the group.

What's everyone's appetite for another meetup between Thanksgiving and Christmas, say mid-December?
If everyone is busy with awkward office parties and dieting, it can wait until next year.

Me too!

I'm up for it. Do you guys want to do The Frontier again?

The Frontier's free beer is rather enticing... I would be completely open to go there again. The 17th of December, from 4:30 (when they open the tap) to whenever?
Other suggestions are welcome.

Where is the place you're talking about meeting at?

Hey SG: It's in Research Triangle Park, a place called "The Frontier". They host a free beer get-together on most thursdays to publicize their for-rent meeting and office space: http://www.rtp.org/about-us/the-frontier/
And specifically: http://www.rtp.org/event/happy-hour-11-26-15/

I can't do the 17th, but I'll catch you guys the next time!

I can't do the 17th, but I'll catch you guys the next time!
Hey Spruce - I'm not locked in to only the 17th - I can do any of their Thursday events going forward except this week's (Day before Thanksgiving).
I don't have to wait for a bigger organized meeting just to go by, so if you wanted to do that, holla holla. Your call.
-
I could do the 10th if that works for folks.
-
I may have jumped the gun on that one: the 17th is the one Thursday that will NOT have free beer because of some foodie conference.
http://www.rtp.org/event-categories/the-frontier/
The 10th does have the happy hour event, would that work for everyone else?
-
I can do the 10th!

With 4 confirmed attendees it sounds like we have a critical mass, so let's go ahead and write the 10th down in our calendars. Hopefully more people can join us.
The next MMM Triangle meetup will be held at The Frontier on December 10th, 2015, in RTP, from 4:30pm to 6:30. Yes, that’s a Thursday.
Critics have called us “lunatics who’ll end up eating cat food” and “not as weird as reddit”. Back by popular demand, the Triangle Mustachians shall meet again.
If you haven’t been to one before, local meetups are a great way to meet and chat with like-minded people from your local-ish community. Discussions are very informal in nature, and no specific agenda is agreed upon beforehand. Off the top of my head, all the following subjects have been discussed recently:
- index funds and general investing practices
- workplace policies and hilariously broke coworkers
- long term travel and immigration issues
- getting your significant other to See The Light(™)
- local real estate markets
- puppies, kittens, and ducklings
Liquid social lubricant will be provided free of charge courtesy of The Frontier, but the venue itself is not a bar and there is no pressure to drink beer if you don’t want to. Everyone is welcome, so do feel free to bring along your SO, or maybe that coworker you are slowly bringing around to our little cult, or really anyone you want.
The Frontier is located near I-40 and 147. The 4:30 start time is chosen not just because that’s when they open the beer tap, but also because that lets people avoid the brunt of rush hour traffic. Carpooling is obviously encouraged if you know of someone in your vicinity.
I'll be cross-posting this announcement to the Facebook group "Southeastern Mustachians" for extra recruitment efforts.
-
Dec. 10, Frontier, 4:30pm. I'm in.
-
I'll be there in spirit, so you guys drink a couple of beers for me. Daughter's Winter Concert at school is Dec 10, probably at 5:00 or 5:30. If anyone wants to hear a bunch of fourth graders sing the greatest hits about Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, and a generic not-Christmas "It's December in America", then you're welcome to join me. Otherwise, enjoy the free beer.
-
I'll be there!
I will probably arrive around 5 or shortly after since I work in Carrboro and can't leave until at least 4:30.
Thanks for organizing PDK!
-
I'll be there. Traveling from downtown Raleigh and can't make it until after 5 either. Look forward to meeting everyone.
-
Hi! This sounds like it could be pretty fun. I think a coworker is going to come along too.
-
Friendly reminder!
We're still meeting at the Frontier from 4:30 this Thursday afternoon. Excited to see some new faces there (and regular ones too)!
Is anyone driving back to or near downtown Durham afterwards? Looking for a ride.
-
Still coming!
Sorry PDK, not going to downtown.
-
I'm taking the bus back to downtown Durham...it's not the fastest but it will get you there if you can't find a ride.
-
In white chairs by the atrium
-
Thank you to everyone who made it yesterday! If I counted correctly, we had a total of 9 people this time.
We'll make a sign next time for newcomers to find us more easily.
-
I loved seeing everyone, but folks, I Want a RE-DO!!!! Here's why:
1) Our friends from the triad got NOTHING except a little bit of social time. No beers. No detailed mustachian discussion. I am bummed.
2) I most enjoy hearing about other people's badassity. We should have done a roundtable where people talk about things they have done that are mustachian or enable increased levels of mustachianism.
So let me make this offer, folks who came from west of the triangle:
1) If you want to re-do at the Frontier, let me know and we'll plan for the next "Beer Thursday". That's January 7th.
2) If you want a re-do nearer you, I'll travel your direction. If we do that, I'd prefer a weekend day, although we could have a weekday option sometime during the week of Christmas.
Topics:
1) Share your Badassity: What things have you done, or what things have you changed about your life that greatly increases the amount of money you can save, monthly, toward your FIRE?
2) Bicycles: I have bicycles and can bring either a manual bike or an ebike to show-and-tell. My bikes don't generally fall into the giant either-or category of "road bike or mountain bike". My bikes are commuter-oriented, and I can point out the features of the bike that optimize usage for commuting vs. "road or mountain".
3) Show-n-tell: I have a few SMALL purchases (Amazon, mostly) that enable the badass frugal lifestyle. One that I wish I'd brought with me last night was this bicycle light:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GFLQMAK?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00
It has a USB plug on it and it works AWESOMELY. It's meant to be a bicycle light, but it also comes with a headstrap so it can be a personal headlight. I've been testing it out and am extremely pleased with it for the money: UNDER $10!!!
Another good show-n-tell is my small hybrid car. 2000 Honda Insight two-seater, gets 60mpg. It's my daily driver. I replaced the hybrid battery myself along with the catalytic converters (myself). I could tell about that, with photos.
4) Personal Finance Tracking: I'd love to talk about how each of us track personal finances and what, if any, unique capabilities our chosen method might have (and the shortcomings, too).
5) Journey to FIRE: I still don't have a clue what anyone's FIRE goals are. (One of you mentioned 2020 and I agreed with that - 2020 is my targeted date. I think we briefly discussed that....but I would have loved to hear from everyone else.....
6) Running out of beer: That SUCKED! If we went to a venue that serves, we'd make sure we went somewhere that they would not run out, or I'd show up with some homebrew.
Even if we don't have a do-over, I'm going to schedule another meetup and at least a subset of these items I've listed above will be on the agenda.
Thoughts?!?! Talk to me "king" and "jmbodenh25", I'm mainly talking to you about this.
-
I would love some specific topics too - something that can get a good conversation going. These are good suggestions.
I like that light...and it's even local! (CREE is just up the road from The Frontier)
-
Nice to see/meet everyone last night!
jmbodenh25, I hope you come back and my "crazy liberal" views did not scare you off! :-)

I love finding CREE products - not just because they are local, but because their LED's kick ass.
-
It was great meeting everyone Thursday. January 7th works for me.
How about a #7 topic option.
7) Side Hustles: Ideas or ways you're earning passive/side income to reach FIRE sooner or to provide additional income beyond your FIRE date.

That's a good one, wish I'd thought to list it. I don't have any full-grown side hustles but I'd be very interested in hearing from others who do!

I am also busy on the 7th. I could do the 14th though if that works for more folks.
My husband and I have an unusual and lucrative side-business I can share.
-
I can do either 7th or 14th
-
What time do you meet? And where is Frontier?
Happy to bring a growler full.
-
Zamboni, the frontier is a meeting space in rtp, they have free beer selected Thursdays, which is one reason we've met there a few times. Normally it's pretty empty but there was a crowd in December!
I'm game for the 7th or 14th AND I will try to bring a mustache sign for us so people can find us easier 😀
-
Here's the address for the Frontier: 800 Park Offices Dr, Triangle, NC 27709
We usually meet around 4:30-5:30, people show up as they can. Beer starts flowing at 4:30 until it runs out, which was maybe 5:30 last time.
-
Hi there. First post (woo!) here. I live in the area and I'd enjoy meeting some fellow Mustachians. What luck that I found this thread. Is the meetup to be the 7th or 14th?
-
Hearing no objections, I hereby selfishly declare that we meet on the 14th!
See y'all then.

I printed out a Mustache sign at work today and I will hopefully remember to bring it along!

Sorry to cancel at the last minute but I won't be able to make it tonight due to a family emergency. I hope someone else can bring a sign for us.

Thanks, unfortunately a family member passed away somewhat unexpectedly yesterday.
I hope you all had fun!
-
And I come back to the land of the living from grad school shenanigans (my first first-author academic publication!) to see I missed something!

Anyone in the Asheville area?
Yep, I'm just south of Asheville (Fletcher). If anyone wanted to try to meet up in this area, that would be great!
-
Long shot, but does anyone in the Triangle know of reasonable people thinking of selling their car? Dealing with craigslist folks who think their vehicle's after market CD player warrants asking $1,000 over Kelly Blue Book is getting old very fast.
Looking for something fuel efficient, preferably Toyota/Honda/Nissan/Mazda with 80-130k miles on the odometer, $2,000-5,000, stick shift preferred.

Maybe us! 2000 Honda civic (100k miles) or accord (166k miles), both very well maintained mechanically (with maintenance records). Single owner. Automatics, and the paint sucks so they look like 15 year old cars.
I'm looking for a 6-8 year old minivan with under 130k miles and finding the same thing. Everything seems to be well over KBB and I can't find any of the lower trim level models (we don't want to pay for the luxury versions!).
-
Deal is done. Mr. Der Krake is now the proud new owner of a lightly used 16 year old Civic. :)

Hold off on the congrats. I tried starting it today for the first time since picking it up last week and the engine doesn't turn. I ended up having it towed to have a shop look at it.

Hey, the "sell your friend a lemon" thread is supposed to be over in New Jersey. haha.

Hello-
New to the MMM forums, have browsed occasionally. My wife and I did the Dave Ramsey approach to eliminating non-mortgage debt, but are now in a bit of a now-what? quandary. Would love to get together with some of you crazy Mustachians.
I live about 25 minutes south of Winston-Salem.

Hey TravisS!
Welcome to MMM and congratulations on doing the DR approach. DR is a great way to start on the road to changing your life - if you've completed all the baby steps, you are ready to kick some butt MMM style. Here's a quick link for you to ponder that should give you something to think about on where you want to go next:
https://www.bogleheads.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=6211
There are several MMM folks near you - I know because they traveled to recent RTP MMM get-togethers. There are enough of you in the Triad that you could probably do a nice little meet-up.
-
I don't get alerts when things are updated here :( Any plans to meet again?

Hey YC - March 3rd is another Happy Hour at The Frontier in RTP, so it's possible we could dig on one of those. Are you in or near RTP?

Work in RTP, live in Raleigh..

I can't make it tomorrow but would be game for bother meetup soon!

Anyone else in the Fayetteville, NC area?
-
How about another weekend meetup to give the folks who don't live in the immediate Triangle area a chance to come? Spring should be upon us soon, that opens up outdoorsy options.

I'm game!
Me too!
We could do Duke gardens again in April when the weather is more reliably nice or Umstead if we want to go a little further south (I think we have some folks driving from south of the triangle...but my NC geography is horrible, so might be wrong)
-
Would also be cool to do a brewery meetup. Mystery Brewing or Regulator in Hillsborough, Fullsteam in Durham or Gizmo/LoneRider in RTP/Brier Creek area.

-
Anyone in the Asheville area?
BTW Ricky: I grew up near Asheville - was there just this past weekend. I would be happy to come have a MMM meetup with you guys, especially if it were at Highland or Wicked Weed or any other place fun.
Hell, let me be honest. I'd meet up with you guys in the eating section of an Ingles supermarket. It would be fun as hell to have an MMM meetup in Asheville!!!

I had an amazing Fullsteam First Frost at Pelagic Beer & Wine last Friday night. 10%, though... crikey!

Wait, Ingles has a dine in section? All the ones I've been to seemed kind of shady like a crappy Food Lion (my knowledge of Ingles is probably 10+ years old). But yeah, I'd totally meet at one of those places in a grocery store.

When Asheville turned into the Hipster Capital of the World, Bob Ingle mashed the gas to the floor on his stores. Now, they make Harris Teeter and Kroger's look like wimps.
The one on Tunnel Road is one of my faves. I love their salad bar, I get a pound of the little red sweet peppers that are about the size and shape of a golf ball and bring them back with me. Oh, and the buy-one-get-one pork rinds. Chicharrones!
I always check their craft beer section to see what's up. Their prices are killer and often beat buying direct from the brewery.
-
Commenting so that I can try to get in on the next meet up in the triangle. Sounds like sometime in April at Duke gardens, Umstead (or maybe Jordan lake?), or a brewery has been discussed. Should a date be selected? Are babies and not-so-mustacian husbands welcome at these things? I have a busy April but hope to be available to meet up.
-
Hey,
I'm up near Boone. Our Ingles is lame, guess they ran out of funding for us! I've been emailing Adli trying to get one here, but no luck. Aldi rocks for saving $$$.
No mustache yet, but I'm enjoying the reading. I've got the frugal part down, but the income, saving, and investing parts are missing!
Just installed a wood stove this Winter, so free heat & good exercise. Bike riding is tough up here, so there's another strike against me. Can't move because I haven't finished building our house yet, and likely won't until after I retire...(you can't rush a good thing, right?)
Just thought I'd say hello. :)
-
In the style of PDK, I'm putting a time out there. I propose, next triangle MMM meetup:
Sunday April 17 at 12:30pm at Duke gardens. Same meeting area as Last years because I can reuse PDK's map. Also I suggest we do a potluck like last year, it was fun.
http://m.imgur.com/eJXH2j8?r (Map link)
Who can make it?
-
Nice work, Megma. I'm pretty sure I can make it.
-
I am out of town that weekend. I could do the weekend before or after.
-
I can! But then again I can do most weekends in April.
-
Totally new to Mustachianism and North Carolina both! Any other NC mustachians in the Fayetteville area?
-
Rangerrick SwordGuy is in Fayetteville. You should check out his journal.
-
I am out of town that weekend. I could do the weekend before or after.
Well since the weekend I suggested hasn't gotten much traction, why don't we move to April 24th so you can come PDK.
-
Great, we can make the 24th!
-
The 24th works for me! Hmmm potluck...
-
The 24th is compatible with my sched... See you there!
-
See ya'll there!
-
(creeping out from the shadows....) Count me in for the 24th too! :)
-
MMM party?
So, how does that work? Draw straws, and the loser pays? ;)
Any gatherings around CLT? I'm spending a lot of time around Cornelius these days. Would be good to meet for a beer sometime.
-
New to the list but not the Triangle. I plan on being there on the 24th!
-
I think I can do this. Are kids welcome or adults only?
-
I think I can do this. Are kids welcome or adults only?
Everyone is welcome. There is a grassy area where lots of kids play, and a large fishpond.

Every meetup attendee over the age of 5 must bring proof of ownership of Admiral shares in their Roth IRA!
Just kidding, of course. Fidelity funds are fine too.

Can someone who knows post the definitive info?
Thanks!

Duke Gardens potluck lunch - April 24th @ 12:30 (Sunday) in Durham, NC
There is a large grassy area as indicated on this map by the red mark (http://m.imgur.com/eJXH2j8?r). Duke Gardens is a pretty popular attraction, parking is available.
Last year we set up shop under a tree in the shade, so the exact location may end up being a little off the mark. If this is your first time and the prospect of finding strangers in a mildly crowded area terrifies you, PM me and I will give you my cell phone number in case you get lost. That being said, we've never had issues finding each other.

No Admiral shares yet in the Roth - that's my next milestone. PLENTY of Fidelity and Vanguard, though....

Ah HAH! I will probably be on campus at Duke managing my bioreactors and can probably pop by!

I routinely talk to total strangers. It used to really embarrass my wife and children but they've reconciled themselves to it over the decades. :)
I don't normally walk up to strangers and ask to see their mustache, though... :)

So far, so good. See you all Sunday!

I plan on being there as well, with ... Mrs. Change_Seeker (that sounds awkward) ... and our three mini-mustaches. Spoiler Alert, I do not have any form of a real-life mustache...although now that I mention it we have had a lot of fun with the stick-on ones from the dollar store.
-
Hi change_seeker I'm from Lexington. I live on the side closer to Winston-Salem. It's nice to see a fellow Mustachian from the triad. Unfortunately I can't make the meetup this Sunday. Somewhere in the Winston-Salem or one of the smaller towns around it would be good for a triad meetup I think.
-
Looks like the weather is going to be great on Sunday. Not sure what I will be bringing yet, hesitating between a bean salad and pineapple.
I also suggest we each bring our own water/beverage.
Cool, I have been meaning to show off my vanguard water bottle (http://www.vanguardgear.com/shop/featured-lifestyle/camelbak-eddy.html?SID=mfottkrh9cn59q3g38u4l1os10).

On my way up from Fayetteville.
Red t-shirt, blue jeans, white sneakers, white guy, beard and mustache...

Have fun y'all.

If you want to talk to me about RE in Fayetteville or jewelry making, you know how to reach me. :)

Hi NC (and specifically Triangle) peeps!
I'm co-hosting an event that will take place in RTP in June - June 21st. It's called "The Road to Financial Wellness". If you're familiar with the financial site Phroogal (www.phroogal.com), it's the founder who is going on a roadtrip promoting financial empowerment. Should be a fun time, and it's free to attend. You can RSVP here (and get a free book if you're quick enough): https://www.eventbrite.com/e/the-smile-lifestyle-event-in-raleigh-nc-pit-stop-13-tickets-25276934993
Feel free to reach out if you have questions. I hope to see some of you there!

You can RSVP here (and get a free book if you're quick enough): https://www.eventbrite.com/e/the-smile-lifestyle-event-in-raleigh-nc-pit-stop-13-tickets-25276934993
Feel free to reach out if you have questions. I hope to see some of you there!
I'll also be giving a presentation at the event and look forward to seeing any local MMMers!

Hello Triangle!
My name is Juan, I live in Raleigh with my wife Elisa. We recently attended Camp Mustache 2016 and loved meeting so many mustachians. I enjoyed it so much that I am planning a mustachian meetup in the Raleigh area!
I have exchanged a few emails with Justin from rootofgood.com (http://rootofgood.com) and it is likely he will come!
Here are the details:
When: June 25, 2016 at 10:00am.
Where: NC Museum of Art (2110 Blue Ridge Rd, Raleigh, NC 27607)
What: Meet and hang out with fellow Mustachians!
Let me know if you have any questions. Hope to see many of you there!

Thanks for planning. I will be there... and in Raleigh this time, woohoo! (I live by NC State)
-
I'll be there on the 25th as well. I live right down the road from the museum, so this one is super convenient for me. :)
-
Hey Juan, I just emailed you back (sorry I missed your earlier email a few days ago!), but I see you've already got a time set up.
I should be there.
Any shady places to hang out outside or is there a good lounge space inside if it's super hot/humid?
-
Hey All,
Just wanted to let you know that we have changed the time to 10am. Same date and place.
Changed the time because:
- 5:30pm may be too hot for some and we wouldn't have the option to go inside since the museum would be closed.
- At 10am we have the option to go inside if it's raining.
Sorry if the change is an inconvenience. Looking forward to meeting everybody!!
-
Hi, I'm looking forward to seeing everyone on Saturday. I bumped into thedayisbrave this week at The Frontier and she's in for Saturday.
Where do we want to meet? Weather says high of 86 degrees so it might get hot by noon. I looked at google streetview and there appear to be some outdoor tables but not a ton of shade sort of in between the 2 art museum buildings in a courtyard area. Their website mentioned picnic tables under some trees to the east of their east building (the older and less modern looking building) but I can't recall ever seeing them.
Inside the museum there's a lobby area with comfy seats that runs into an open cafe area with even more comfy seats. The cafe doesn't serve till 11:30 so we could probably hang out there till 11:30 and probably later if it's not nice outside. I'll try to call tomorrow to check on whether they care if we loiter in the cafe area (I doubt it's ever anywhere near full since there's two separate seating sections within what looks like the cafe area from google streetview imagery inside the museum). Obviously I don't want to subject the group to spending $5 on a coffee or whatever the fancy pants museum charges so we'll see what they say. They might also have other rooms in the museum where they could host us. I'm open to other suggestions too since I've only been to the museum a few times in the past several years since the new building opened.
FYI, I think the Hunt Library at Centennial campus would be another excellent venue for a meetup in the future (for the Raleigh folks at least). Lots of inside meeting space and some good outside picnic tables and it's a cool facility. Free parking nights and weekends. And fairly bikeable to get there if you're in Raleigh.
-
Hey Justin, thank you for taking the lead on finding an exact spot. Last time I was at the Museum with a group of friends we just hung out under the shade of the trees near the outdoor amphitheater.
Let's meet outside by the amphitheater, and then we can decide if we want to go inside or stay outdoors (I'd suggest bringing a picnic blanket or a folding chair in case we stay outside).
Look forward to meeting everybody!!
-
Sounds good Juan. See you and the others down there. We can update this thread if we move later.
-
Great meet up today at the NC Museum of Art. Hard to complain about the near-perfect weather for late June (though I still got some major sun burn/tanning going on). I think I counted 8 of us. Paul der Krake, Juan and wife and a few of his friends, and what I assume was Bourbon Belle (though I forgot to ask your screen name Ms. Belle).
-
Thank you all for coming! It was great meeting you.
Look forward to seeing you again soon!
-
That was me! :) It was great to see everyone - familiar faces and new faces. Looking forward to the next meetup!
-
Sorry I had to miss this one! I don't regularly check the forum here. Has anyone considered starting a Meetup page?
-
Sorry you missed it too, Hualon. I do like the idea of having a place where we can plan meetups and that people will check more regularly.
I think Meetup charges organizer fees. A Facebook group should also work and it is free!
Just created the group:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/266574287039003/
If the link doesn't work, try searching for "NC Triangle on FIRE".
Join in if you want and let me know if you have any trouble :)
-
Signed up! Thanks for setting that up.
I didn't know that Meetup charged; that stinks.
-
Following, so I don't miss the next one :)
-
FYI, there's a poll and discussion on the facebook page for a meetup later in August or, more likely, September. Hunt Library at NCSU's centennial campus is the current front runner I think.
-
Oh I missed things! I just requested o join the new Facebook group!
-

If someone can be so kind as to post here once things are decided it would be great :)

The date has been set. It will be September 17 at 1pm at the Hunt Library, 1070 Partners Way in Raleigh. Right now there are 7 confirmed attendees. Thanks to Ellen for organizing!
-
Reminder that we're meeting up at Hunt Library on NC State University's Centennial Campus at 1 pm Saturday 9/17.
On the Triangle on FIRE facebook page I suggested we meet up in the lobby in front of the elevators by the woven wicker bench that looks like modern artwork (but I'm 90% sure it's an actual bench for sitting; if you're tiny you can also crawl through it).
-
Any word on the next meet up? I just moved to South Carolina.

Thanks, I was having trouble with the search function, did I miss a South Carolina group or does this one cover both states pretty well?

I am not aware of any active SC group- but everyone is welcome to ours. We've had folks come from as far as Wilmington, but you will probably be setting a record if you show up!
-
I have no plans that day, just the thought of a 3.5 hour drive might stop me, but I discovered MMM 2 weeks after moving AWAY from Denver and I had no luck meeting any Mustaches in San Antonio, of course I now see an Austin meetup 2 weeks after moving to South Carolina! So I will put it in my calendar and try my best.
-
what part of SC did you move to Heroes?
-
hoping I moved to Sumter for a year.
-
Hey All - I'm back. Just took a few months off from the forums. Sorry I missed the meetup at the Hunt Library! So we've got something percolating for Oct. 29?
-
Hey all,
We're visiting your fair area until the 27th, and thought it might be fun to meet up with you all. Do you have any plans for an upcoming meetup, or would anyone be interested in one? Our schedule is relatively open, have nothing else to do :)
Suggestion on location is great as well. I saw that you met up at Duke Gardens previously, that's selfishly close to where we are staying, but I'm not sure if the weather calls for an outdoor meetup. I'm open to exploring anywhere or roughly accessing neighboring city. Sure I could find a way to get out there.
Hope to meet some of you.
Would love another meetup, but not sure if the holidays have people scurrying about -- December/January are usually tricky months to plan anything, at least among my friend circle.
I'm totally down though. I'm right on the Raleigh/Cary border so Durham isn't too far for me. Perhaps we can see how many are up for a meetup.. but if not just PM me and we can plan our own mini meetup :)
There is also a Triangle Area Mustachians Facebook group.. I know some peeps are active on there and not so much on the forums.. once we get something set up I will cross-post.
-
I am game in early January. Too chilly for Duke gardens I think. Maybe some where in the southpoint area? It's more central for Durham, Chapel Hill and Apex/Cary people.
The Frontier also has happy hour on the 5th of January but that might be tough for me to make, so I'm hesitant to suggest it...

What about Saturday Jan 7th? We could do lunch? Harvest 18 is really good and it's right by Southpoint. However may be a little pricy for Mustachian budgets... Thoughts?
-
Hello all,
Another Raleigh resident interested in talking FIRE with other mustachians. Guessing there wasn't a meetup on 1/7.
Looking forward to hearing about the next one.

I would be a whole lot happier if my "empire" was more "rental" and less "fixer-upper costing me money". :)

Put on some work clothes and you can get some first-hand experience at the kind of stuff people have to do to fix up a place...

Just moved to Raleigh from Central IL a month ago. Anyone interested in a meetup?

Sure! It's been a while. Make sure to join the NC Triangle on FIRE Facebook group too!
-
Hi! Am in Durham, definitely interested in a Meetup. No FB for me, are meetings posted here too? Thanks!
-
No Facebook for me but I'd be interested in a meetup near the Triangle is there is still interest. Post here or PM me.
Since it's late April, who wants to make plans for a weekend in May? 6th 13th 20th
Cast your votes now.

Hi Babybalrog,
I've been a Mustachian for a long time and live in Raleigh. 31 year old M.
Raleigh is my base but I teach English abroad, so therefore don't really have a perma-home so to speak. And I'm headed out to China in July for another year there.
However I'd like to socialize for the next two months while I'm here (I usually come back here in the summer) and am definitely down to meet people, say hello, and talk about money. Please keep me in the loop!
-
I could do a meet up if it's in Durham
-
How about Sunday afternoon on May the 21st.
-
I'm down!
PM me and I'm happy to join
-
where is the meet up?
-
21st in Durham sounds good. PM me a location I don't go there often.
-
I live in Fayetteville, I'm the wrong person to suggest somplace...
-
Looks like the NC facebook group is meeting:

May 20th. 2pm. Umstead Park, but on the entrance off the 70.
Meet right in front of the Visitor Center. Take Sal's Branch trail (2.8 miles roundtrip) and have a picnic at the lake.
Now you know what I know. :)
-
I don't use Facebook, so thanks.
-
Also a non-facebooker, so thanks for posting this. The Raleigh Tour d'Coop is that same day (5/20) and we are a stop on the tour so won't be able to make it.
-
Just requested to join the FB group. I will see if I can make it!
-
Great!
-
Any word on how we expect this afternoon's rain to play out? Odds looked worse last night, but still, I'm a little worried
-
I forgot to count how many people showed up, but it was at least fifteen.
Lovely day and even better company!

Is anyone up for a July meet up? I missed the most recent one because I've been so busy that I've not been on the forums. :(
7/8, 7/22, 7/29?
-
Hey, I just moved to the triangle area from California! It looks like there's a group here that does meetups every once in a while. Is anyone interested in doing another meet up at some point?
-
Welcome to NC!
What part of NC are you in? I'm in Fayetteville. A goodly number of folks are in the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill area.
This facebook group seems to get a bit more activity than this thread:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/266574287039003/

Thanks, I'm in the Triangle area now, currently in Durham near southpoint.
I joined the facebook group so I'll keep up with things there.
-
Welcome to NC, SkinnyGreenMan!

Everyone in the Triangle NC area... we are having a little shindig at my house on Oct 21 at noon. I'm near the PNC arena. Feel free to PM me if you can come and I'll send you my address.
Potluck style -- please bring something to share. Also bring chairs if you have any lawn chairs sitting around, please. I have enough seating for about 15.
See you then!

Anyone in this group out in Wilmington or interested in having a meetup there in February?
I would be more interested in a Wilmington meetup when it's beach weather... :)
-
I’m in Charlotte. Seems like Fayetteville is somewhat in the middle of the triangle, Charlotte, and Wilmington if you want to do a meetup soon, or we can plan for Wilmington in May?
-
I would love to host a meet-up. (Sorry, just saw the message!)
Sat or Sun (Nov 17/18) would work for me..
Anyone else? There are some nice parks, several museums, a nice downtown area. Plenty of ethnic restaurants if people don't want to bring something for a potluck.
-
Everyone, the FB group just put together a meet up for November 11. We'll be meeting at the Umstead State Park Visitors Center at 11 am for a hike. Bring a packed lunch to carry to the lake. It is about 1 miles each way. Moderate terrain. If we get rained out Nov 17 is the back up day.
SwordGuy. Sorry I didn't see your post. We wanted to get the hike in while the weather is still nice. I wouldn't mind an indoor meet up once it's cold.
-
Oh, well. Next time.
I have a house full of company this weekend.
-
Anyone in this group out in Wilmington or interested in having a meetup there in February?
@CanuckExpat the suggestion is almost a year old but we're in Wilmington and I think a Meetup in Feb. 2019 would be a blast. This is the first I've really ventured into the Meetup sections of the MMM forums but now that we're FIREd, meeting other Mustachians seems like a cool way to spend some of our free time!
-
How about in Wilmington on Sat the 16th? Is there a good place for folks to meet?
-
Thanks for thinking of me, but I'm not there. If/when I am next, I will revive the thread on my end. Enjoy the meetup
-
Hey there,
It's good to see someone interested in a meetup in Wilmington. Waving at you! I see you are in Fayetteville. Bit of a drive.
Sorry, but Saturday the 15th is all stacked up with holiday stuff for me. How about postponing until after the holiday? Or did you mean Sunday, the 16th?
In the interim, maybe we can gather up a few more people that are in Eastern NC. I know they are hiding somewhere.
How about in Wilmington on Sat the 16th? Is there a good place for folks to meet?
-
Good catch on the dates! I suppose either would work, but there are fewer things open on Sundays.
There's a link to a Facebook group that's more active. I can post it there, too.
But someone (not me) needs to pick a place and activity because I just don't know the area.
-
What's the link to the Facebook group?

What do you think about starting a new Wilmington thread with the goal to set up a meetup in January?
And cast a net (well, we are near the ocean and fishing references)...

Hi all,
I'm moving to Durham with my wife this summer to start our new life of early retirement (32 years old!!!! Whoop!)
Would love to meet up with some other Mustacheans.
We've been living in Europe for the last 10 years and are hoping to keep up some of our no clownlike habits back in the USA.
All best,
Ben

We're down in Fayetteville, NC, about 1 1/2 hours away. Send me a PM if you'll be down our way.

I'm in Raleigh. PM me if you want to meet up. The FB group does events about twice a year. A little more fire on them to do something would be nice.
-
Thanks. Will definitely hit you up when I arrive.
Would be interested to hear any thoughts about ways of living a badass life in he triangle.
-
Hey guys!
I'm kind of new to the FI movement but I'm super excited about it. I live in Jacksonville NC and I am trying to find a somewhat close meetup with like minded mustachians! I haven't really heard about much around my area, but I wouldn't mind driving a ways to talk to some people who think like I do.

I'm new to Durham, NC. I'm a 28F with a 1-year-old. I haven't really explored the local FB group because it's tough with a toddler, but I am still looking for new buddies in the area.
PM me if you want to get together! We love the outdoors and there are so many great options around here.

I'm in Fayetteville, NC and am willing to host a meet-up.
