Title: Nashville or Louisville?
Post by: inthebiz on October 20, 2012, 08:22:50 PM
It'd be great to meet others striving for FI the Mustachian way...whatever that is. I'd like to think a social event wouldn't be out to the movies or some expensive restaurant every weekend as is often the case with invites we get from friends.

are you in louisville? been wondering how many mustachians were here as I haven't found any at my work on in my neighborhood yet.

Right now I'm in Louisville. I'm not sure how long I'll be here as Nashville is being discussed. I live and work in the Northfield area.

Ok. I used to live in that area but now i'm in south louisville so I don't think i'll be biking by you anytime soon. Nashville is a nice town, and I can't blame you for wanting to move before we spend a $2.5 billion on some bridges.

Nice! How do you make Mustchianism work in Nashville? I'm considering a move there and will actually be visiting soon to check things out. I have family in the very anti-Mustchian suburb of Brentwood, but I could choose where to work from Franklin, West End or downtown. I'd like to live as close to my office as possible. Any opinions on any of these locations for living and playing?

If we can get enough local Mustachians we should all get together.

Woolie, I'm in Nashville (Lenox Village). Let's get more people to represent!

inthebiz, Nashville is very un-Mustachian, in structural ways more than how people act. What I mean by structural is that there are barely any sidewalks around the city, unless you're around the center of the city. You can forget about sidewalks in less populated areas, especially Brentwood. Franklin is pretty good with them though. What I'm getting at is that if there aren't a lot of sidewalks (and they wonder why the state is so obese?), everything is car-oriented and it can be downright dangerous sometimes to bike (a plethora of very narrow 2-lane roads). That's something to keep in mind, transportation is a big chunk of people's budgets around here.

All that being said, many of the people aren't too into keeping up with the Joneses. Sure, you have the country stars and McMansions in Brentwood and Forest Hills, but I would wager that many people aren't too in debt. I read an article recently about the opening of the Bentley dealership in Nashville. The general manager said he was optimistic about his prospects because there isn't a large luxury car market in Nashville, even though the wealth compares to some of the coastal areas (healthcare, music and education really do make people rich).

So, you wouldn't have too hard of a time living a Mustachian lifestyle, except for the fact that if you live anywhere outside of the 3 areas you mentioned, you'd most likely have to drive because it is very suburban and roads aren't conducive to biking. Out of those 3 areas, I would prefer, in the following order, West End, Franklin, downtown. West End comes first because it is in the city, yet it's easier to live since there grocery stores and other essentials in the area. Downtown living is very new to Nashville, so you'd have to drive out for daily necessities since there aren't any in downtown. I really like Franklin because it is a compact town for the most part (minus the Cool Springs area), and you could definitely bike around the town. It's historic and not very commercial either, so I think a Mustachian lifestyle would go over well (West End is a bit materialistic).

FYI, avoid the Gulch like the plague (it's very commercial and "trendy" aka $2000 rents right by a railroad track, yay!). It is walkable, but very materialistic and un-Mustachian. I never understood the appeal of that place. If your job does take you downtown, you could consider East Nashville. It's gentrifying, which means it's full of hipsters/younger people rather than 5-Series-driving moms, so there's probably a few Mustachians out there (holler!).

I could go on and on, but I'm out of gas. Pm me if you have some more questions.

And let's get some more Nashville Mustachians to come out of the woodwork!

Another Nashville Mustachian here coming out of the woodwork.  My family and I live in the Donelson/Hermitage area.  I find Nashville to be very Mustachian in some regards (low property taxes, low income taxes, and overall relatively low cost of living), and not so Mustachian in other regards (suburban sprawl which makes it very difficult to go car free, and like amustache said there's not enough sidewalks around here).

inthebiz - I see each of the areas of downtown, West end, and Franklin as areas that are naturally less mustachian (and very much devoted to consumerism), however that doesn't mean that you can't make it work in those areas.

Looking forward to getting to know you all.

I'm in Donelson as well! I'm glad to see there are a few of us around the Nashville area.  I've been a bit MIA as I had to have a wisdom tooth removed so that put me knocked out and fuzzy on meds.

I'm finding the driving to be the biggest Mustachian issue for me. My office used to be in Donelson and then moved about a year and half ago to Cool Springs. I loathe the drive but haven't been able to find anything closer. I think that is going to be my biggest challenge. I want to stay in the Donelson/Hermitage area for a variety of reasons so I'd rather get a new job than get a new house.

Another Nashville resident checking in. We live somewhere between Brentwood and Antioch where my grandparents own property (when my wife and I got married we had a deal with them- we fix up the place and pay associated expenses and in exchange we don't have to pay additional rent).

The lack of roads conducive to biking is a bit of an annoyance, however one of my old coworkers used to bike to work all the time and I have seen more bikers around lately (there has apparently been a bit of a push the past few years to make the city more bike friendly). Having grown up in a rural area it is nice to have necessities such as grocery stores a few minutes down the road as opposed to a half hour away and the library system is fairly good.

The one thing about Nashville though is that it apparently isn't uncommon to start developing allergies after moving here. Neither my wife nor I ever had troubles with them before, but it is a fairly constant annoyance- apparently the city rests in a bit of a geographic bowl that just kind of collects all kinds of junk in the air. Not sure how scientifically valid the observation is but that's just what my relatives up on the ridge say.

Aside from that it really is a lovely town; generally relaxed depending on where you go, lots of interesting places to wander around, and decently low cost as others have pointed out. Apologies if I rambled on and on there, simply kind of neat to find others of similar mindset in the general area.

Nashville is plenty mustachian, IMO, but then I live in East Nash, where I can get basically everything I need on my bike*. Minus occasional trips to Costco. My mortgage on a 150k house (20% down, of course) is ~850 a month, 600 of which is covered by roommates. Low cost of living, low income and property taxes, and dirt cheap houses if you don't mind being out of the super trendy areas. It's also the best place to be a landlord I've ever lived (Louisiana, Colorado, California, Tennessee, Seattle), comparing the rents to the housing prices, which is why I'm looking for a SFH as an investment property.

*theoretically. The reality is I still drive way too much -- if there's one way I need a lot of work it's that way.

About 2 hours from Nashville and 3 from Louisville.  The cost of living here is very low and it's not far from the Land Between the Lakes, which is a world-class recreation area.  If there are any others nearby, speak up :)

In Nashville down on Bell Rd near the Elm Hill Marina!  I work on Donelson Pike a bit south of the airport and have been biking to work since May (when my sister totaled my car on the morning of my wedding).

Not very bike friendly out this way although I at least get to have a bike lane for the first mile of my trip!

Nashvillian here. I live in Crieve Hall, which itself is rather unmustachian given its insular nature and lack of bikeability and walkability, but I work in Brentwood (4 miles door to door which I bike every morning) and my wife likes it, so that's how I justify it for now. Let's plan a Mustachian meet up.

Hi Louisvillians and those nearby!  I'm trying to salvage some botched birthday plans,(32 oye!) and it occurred to me what better birthday gift than meeting a bunch of other mustachians!  Anyone up for a get together in Cherokee Park this Saturday 8/29?  I'm new to the area and will need some help pinning down the specific location from any locals.  I'll bring cake (homemade or store-bought (TBD), because any party without cake is just a meeting.

Sistastache - happy belated birthday and welcome to Louisville!  Did you get your Cherokee Park meetup going, and if you didn't, could we organize something belated?  I'd love to get together a Louisville meetup for Mustachians.  I've been unnsuccessful in meeting any out in the wild thus far.  :)

Hey folks, long time reader, just joined the forum. I live in the Hillsboro Belmont area of Nashville , I've found it pretty affordable with everything being so close. I haven't had a personal car in three years. I do have a work vehicle I can run errands in when I get off work, but I still walk everywhere I can. Used to live in Bellevue, still could walk, but always thought I was going to hit by a car.

I also live in Hillsboro! Everything is close, agreed on a personal car being almost an unnecessary luxury for daily life (especially since they reopened the Kroger on 21st). Rent is a bit higher than other neighborhoods, but living here I've been able to bike to work almost every day for the past two years. Wouldn't trade those minutes of my life for anything.

Memphian here, and I'd tentatively be up for a future meet-up in Nashville.  I seriously hate driving though, and at 3-4 hrs (never underestimate the insanity of I-40) it may be a bit too far for a day trip.  That being said, I'd appreciate being kept in the loop if something gets planned out, ya never know...

I'm also in Nashville, also in the Hillsboro area.

I love the Hillsboro neighborhood.  Just sold my condo there in preparation
for FIRE and I'm currently renting a room off West End Ave.  Would love to
move back, but the expense is high and availability for room rentals is low.

When I complete a few years of international travel, I may consider moving
back to Hillsboro permanently.  Love the Belcourt Theatre!

Anyone here like hiking and or camping?   I'm trying to plan a meet-up later this summer or early fall at Red River Gorge.  It is about 2 hours from Louisville or about an Hour from Lexington.  - Well worth the drive in my opinion.

I am hoping several folks from Lexington, Cincinnati , and Lousville groups can make it.  Of course Nashville is a little further, but folks from there are welcome as well.  (It seems like you've ended up with Lousville and Nashville combined into one thread.....)
