Moab Meetup Oct 7 - 14, 2020
« on: September 30, 2019, 05:37:11 PM »
Let's do it again!!!

UPDATE:  In case you are wondering, the Moab Meetup is a very informal affair.  The two times we have done it, people arrive/depart on various dates (according to their work/school/family/personal schedules) and the folks who happen to be in Moab at the same time plan activities mayyyybe 24 hours in advance?

Some might choose to stay at the campground for the morning, walk to a restaurant for lunch, nap in the afternoon, and cook dinner at camp.  Others might want to wake early and drive down to the Needles District of Canyonlands for a day of hiking.  Still others might want to head to one of any number of awesome local trails for some morning mountain biking, followed by some afternoon paddle boarding.  Other options include road biking along the Colorado River; hiking in Arches National Park; visiting Dead Horse Point State Park; hiking the Portal Trail, hiking to Morning Glory Arch, hiking to Fisher Towers, hiking to Corona Arch and Bowtie Arch; checking out several rock art sites in the area; and many more things I'm not aware of.

What was great in 2018 was that no matter what everyone did during the day, most folks happily gathered around a campfire in the evening.  (In 2019, it seemed a bit too warm for nightly campfires, but we did have one on the last night.)

Oh, and on occasion, one might hear a comment about "the forum", passive income, tax brackets, or various sorts of badassity, but there are no expectations along those lines, and certainly no scheduled sessions of any kind.  Impromptu life coaching chats may arise naturally around the campfire when the alcohol and the chips and the chocolate are enjoyed, though!

Please let me know if you have any questions!  Hope to see you in The Beehive State in a little more than 7 months!!!  :D

UPDATE:  I plan to arrive at the campground on Oct 7 and depart on Oct 14.  Other folks are welcome to arrive/depart according to whatever works for them.

Here is the map of the campground.  I have booked site 88.

I think about it every year but so far the dates have not lined up for me. Maybe 2020?

I couldn't make it this year but I am keeping it in my view for 2020, depending on other plans.

Posting to follow and to share a few photos from the 2019 meetup. Just in case you need some extra motivation to earn those CC points/miles and get yourselves to Moab, you can enjoy views like this:

I'm assuming that is the Colorado River?

It was the Portal Trail.  We started at the trailhead on Potash Road.

I have a one person tent you can use.  The campground also has cabins with bunk beds.  They are pretty basic—bunk beds and a screened porch.  Could be a nice option, though.  If I am coming to Moab from my house, I can bring bedding, extra sleeping bags, pillows, etc.

As I mentioned for this past year, I have a 9x9' dome tent as well as a two person backpacking tent.  I also have a couple of cheap kids type tents that could hold gear for I'm someone sleeping in their car.  Since I now remember how to use my cook stoves and what all the parts are for I will have those as well.  Who knows what else I will find as I dig out more of my gear.

I'm not a camper. My DH and I stayed at a motel within walking distance of the campground. There are many to choose from if camping isn't your thing.

Thankyou - now I remember something about cabins from researching last year. A cabin will be just fine, and I can bring sleeping bag etc, the same as I will for CMTO if I get to go again (fingers and toes crossed).

Some pics from this past weekend's Arches visit--to perhaps draw some more interest in next year's Moab meetup...

Actually, the first three pictures were taken while I was biking the Monitor and Merrimac Trail across the highway from Arches.  The rest of the pics were taken in Arches NP.

posted in the wrong thread year initially but now found the correct one.

I follow these threads and I would love to come but can't because of school aged kids.

Also wanted to let you know that Leave No Trace chose Moab (Arches, specifically) as one of their 2020 Hot Spots and will likely have a variety of programs and cleanup/restoration efforts  going on then.  Posting just in case you all want to join in the work of this cool organization.

Looking forward to it—can’t wait for Winter to be over!!

Yep!  If you ask for cabin 89, you’ll be right next to me.

And they have a very generous cancellation policy, should plans change.

This looks like something we'd be into.  :)

It's been years since we visited Moab, and we've always wanted to go back.  I'll check out the campground details & will follow this thread.  How many attended last time?

Glad to hear of your interest!!

We have only done this MMM Moab Meetup twice, so there's not much data.  The first year, 2018, we had about 25 people, but they arrived and departed at various times, so the most we had at the same place at the same time was about 12, if I am remembering correctly.  In 2019, we had 10.  I'm hoping to get back up to about 20 this time.  If all goes according to plan, we may have some visitors from Australia and hopefully (fingers crossed) a few of the Canadian persuasion.

Again, a reminder to everyone:  the campground has a very generous cancellation policy, so I highly recommend that you make your reservations early, even if you're not certain that you'll make the trip.

We bought a Sprinter van last year planning to convert it for traveling.  The entire Western US is on our "list" of places to visit, so it shouldn't be hard to swing through Moab.

To ensure a good turnout I'll offer a Free Beer (to the first 6 people).  :)

It will be great to meet everyone and hear about their travels & where they're from.

Woo hoo!!  Free beer!!  I do hope that provides the perfect incentive for a few more who might have been on the fence!  :)

Everyone will want to check out your Sprinter, so be prepared to give tours!  Maybe put out a tip jar for the tour guide?  ;-)

I love how "the entire Western US" is on your travel list!  It could take you a lifetime to check that one off!

MoonPie and I really enjoyed the meetup last fall and are thinking of doing it again. Because we're the type of people who can never do the same thing twice, we're considering making a longer trip of it.

Anyone have advice/resources on renting a camper van out of either Las Vegas or Phoenix and planning a 10-14 day trip? I'm especially interested in any tips on hacking the van rental, as that is the priciest part of this idea.

I've heard that renting an RV is "expensive"  (not sure how much?)

I've also noticed that the resale vale on RVs is quite low.  So, maybe you can work out a rental deal with somebody that's trying to sell one?

There are always plenty of them for sale on CL.  Maybe an RV forum would be a good place to ask how to find a deal, or work a deal.

Jucy Vans rent out from Las Vegas https://www.jucyusa.com/

I’m near Zion NP and we see them in the park daily. They fit in a normal size parking spot so more agile and fuel efficient than an RV. I rented 1 for a couple of weeks touring CA and we had a great time with it.

This is a great idea... for someone more brave than I am. I don't think I have the risk tolerance to go through a private party for this. I don't even like to use Uber!

Those look cool. We did see a variety of cool looking vans in Moab, so I know they're out there, they just seem kind of pricey when I get quotes. For example, Jucy quotes a low rental price, but charges $0.25 per mile, which adds up when you're driving round trip from Las Vegas to Moab.

Anyway, I don't want to derail this fine thread, so maybe I'll post to the wider forum.

Dang that fine print, I thought those rental prices looked to good to be true!

-----------------

Posting to follow, probably only a 20% chance I could make a portion of this but it's on my radar anyway :)

I flew into SLC last time but nonstop Southwest flights there are more limited then to Vegas; so I may try that this time instead and maybe do a night or 2 in Vegas and then 4 in Moab. Last time 3 in Moab and 1 in SLC (for 4 total) was a bit rushed so if I could try to workout 6-7 nights total would be more fun I think.

Anyone have advice/resources on renting a camper van out of either Las Vegas or Phoenix and planning a 10-14 day trip? I'm especially interested in any tips on hacking the van rental, as that is the priciest part of this idea.

@LifeHappens I suggest you look for something like this.  I saw it the last time I was in Moab.  I could totally picture you and MoonPie driving around in it.

Some of the rigs we saw around town were just insane. Your pic may not have even been the craziest!

I think we'll stick with a boring van :)

I have a buddy that is into buses. They are cheap and great for camping but drink too much gas for traveling far from home. You’d go broke trying to go cross country in one.

Glad it's on your radar!
