So it's Mill Creek and Pack Creek that were flooded. Our campground is on Pack Creek. This other one, just a little ways away, but on Mill Creek has a pretty bad prognosis.

I threw up a few balloons in the Moab Reddits. We'll see if any of them float.

Edit to add: If you are going to Needles, this is the current state of the highway: https://www.reddit.com/r/moab/comments/wtlg6h/hwy_211_is_indeed_very_damaged/
There's so much good info in this post, I'm pulling it to the new page.

1. Was Wasatch Brewery in SLC affected? SLC is a long way from Moab.
2. Did Spike wash up in some gulch? Spike & Co. are still at home in Needles. The other Needles.
3. There is no 3. Whew!
4. Is our campground still there? IDK. No one's picking up the phone or returning calls yet. Water does flow through the lower part of the campground, so I'm a bit worried. Nothing on the website.

An amazing thing about desert climates is the extreme contrasts. No water any where, then water, water, everywhere, then no water anywhere. These magnificent vistas and canyons were in large measure created by massive water flows, so I'm thinking it's all going to work out in the end. It's just business as usual as far as Mother Nature is concerned.

Many years ago I was in Moab off-roading and we had finished for the day and on our way back to Moab we were crossing the bridge across onion creek on 128?

Sunny hot day not a cloud in the sky around us but we noticed a wall of water coming down the creek it was the most amazing thing I have ever seen a wall of orange water and debris.

Apparently it was raining really hard up the canyon, we watched the water make it to the top of the bridge then cover the road from what is normally a dry wash in a matter of minutes.

I still think about that day every time I am somewhere like onion creek or Kane creek.

Regarding the "Up the Creek" campground: That's where my friend's friend was staying. She said they had three minutes' warning. FoF is a military veteran and her training came in handy. She was in her bag, inside her tent, but everything else she had was in her Bug Out Bag at the front of the tent. She grabbed that bag and escaped to safety. Her tent and sleeping bag were later recovered and have been returned to her.

Thank you for posting these updates, Dicey and Poisson. I'm sure things will be great in time for our meetup and I'm also sure any spending we do will be much appreciated.

I haven't heard back from the campground, but the call to the central reservations number was returned. That person said she was unaware of any damage to the property, so fingers crossed the news is good.

I was surprised to notice our reservation didn't start until the 10th. We have a "thing" on Saturday, October 8th. We had so much fun in Moab last year, that we have now decided we're going to head east on Saturday afternoon so that we can be there by Sunday, October 9th. Happily, the nice lady was able to add the day and give us the same campsite. Yippee!

Thanks for the update. I was wondering if there had been any damage If so, it would possibly be contained to the picnic area, extra parking lot and the tent-only area, as the bulk of the campground is almost 2 stories above Pack Creek.

You're thinking what I'm thinking. I'm also guessing that a fair number of people have reservations for the lower tent sites, so I'm trying to confirm their status. I'll keep trying.

You can put us down for 2 people.

Warning in advance I am pretty quiet / reserved but my SO makes up for it multiple times over.

You cannot imagine the internal struggle going on in my head trying to decide to go it was an epic battle! In the end getting to meet and socialize with this small slice of society that embraces this odd idea of FIRE was enough to bring me out of my shell.

So if you see me sitting there quite not saying much just know there is a giddy little kid inside jumping for joy despite the outward appearance.

This is great news!!  Will you be staying at the campground (Sun Outdoors Moab Downtown)?

I’m so glad you convinced yourself that it will be worth coming out of your shell for this meetup!  I am also pretty socially reserved, so I get it.  I hope you will find that the MMMers in Moab will be interesting, welcoming, fun, and generous.

Looking forward to meeting you and your SO!!

Thanks for all the updates about the recent flooding.  The damage to the road to Needles (211) is really unfortunate.  It is still possible to get there, but the detour would be significant!  :(

Dicey—I’m so glad you and Mr. Dicey and Eleanor plan to sprint to Moab right after Your Thing!!

I just peeked at the calendar, and it looks like this meetup is fast approaching—exciting!!!

Found out a few things:

Looks like Miguel’s Baja Grill sustained some flood damage.  :(  Hopefully, they will recover fully by the time we descend on them in October.

There is a UDOT traffic camera very close to our campground.  From the one still photo I just looked at, everything in that area looks OK, but it didn’t show the actual campground.

There is an article in the Moab Times about the Up the Creek campground.  The owner is not sure his business will survive, ad the campground was badly damaged.  One of the owners also apparently heroically saved some of his customers when the flood waters arrived!!

I’m going to attempt to put together a list of things to do/places to go in Moab.  This is only meant as a resource.  I want to stress again that attendees are absolutely welcome to do as much or as little as they want in terms of outdoor recreation, sharing meals with others, etc.  Napping, lazing by the pool, reading a good book at the library, and hanging out at the evening campfires are totally legit activities!!

Need info/maps/souvenirs?  Moab Information Center is at 25 East Center Street (.8 miles north of our campground)

Need groceries?  City Market is just a block away.  Oh, and this natural food store is great:  https://moonflower.coop/

Need firewood for evening campfires?  City Market sells it, as does the Texaco station right at the entrance to our campground.

Rent a bike:

https://poisonspiderbicycles.com/moab-bike-rentals/

https://moabcyclery.com/rental-bikes/

https://chilebikes.com/

(That’s just a sample.  There are other bike shops as well.)

Paddle board!  (I’ve heard it’s a lot of fun!)

https://www.paddlemoab.com/

https://www.moabwatersports.com/paddleboards.php

https://www.wildwestvoyages.com/rentals

Take a Jet Boat ride on the Colorado River!

https://www.moabjett.com/

https://www.moabadventurecenter.com/moab-jet-boat-tours

( @Embok and her hubs did this last year, and they really enjoyed it)

Scenic Drives:

Travel upriver on 128

Drive through Arches National Park, and stop for short hikes/photo ops

Drive to/through Dead Horse Point State Park

Drive to Canyonlands National Park (Island in the Sky district)

Drive to Newspaper Rock to see amazing petroglyphs

Drive to Canyonlands National Park (Needles district) (warning:  as I write this, part of the access road is closed because of recent flood damage, and there is a significant detour)

Want a leisurely stroll?

Check out the Mill Creek Parkway (as I write this, portions of this are closed because of recent flood damage, but hopefully, it will reopen before our event)

https://moabcity.org/297/Mill-Creek-Parkway

Looking for a tasty breakfast?

https://lovemuffincafe.com/  (VERY popular, so get there early!!  There is usually a line, but it moves pretty quickly.  Getting a table might be a challenge…)

Other eatery recommendations

https://www.miguelsbajagrill.net/ (according to their website, they don’t take reservations, so try to get there early and be prepared to wait (while sipping a margarita!))

https://www.moabfoodpark.com/ (a variety of food trucks!)

Looking for Rock Art?

**Please be respectful of this amazing ancient rock art.  Do not touch it, as oils from your skin will damage it.  Please remind your inquisitive friends and children to be very careful in any of these areas.  Also, should you see any ancient pottery pieces, corn cobs, etc., please do not touch them and leave them right where they are.  Thank you!!**

At the Moab Information Center, pick up a free brochure which will tell you where to find several spots right in/near Moab.  Or ask me.  :)

Also, for anyone driving in from I70, consider taking the Thompson Springs exit (#187), driving north for 4.3 miles and checking out the Sego Canyon Rock Art.  I have not yet been there, but I’ve heard that it’s a very impressive site.

Drive south to Newspaper Rock.

Hiking

This is just a small sample!

https://www.blm.gov/visit/portal-trail (If you look at this description, you’ll see a mention of a very exposed part of the trail.  Don’t worry, you don’t have to do that part.  You can stop before you get there, enjoy the view, take a few photos, and then turn back.)  @oneday and @ToTheMoon and others have done this hike

https://www.blm.gov/visit/moab-rim-trail  (You’ll see in this description that Jeeps, ATVs, hikers, and cyclists all use this trail.  For a portion of the trail, the hiking trail is separated from the Jeep track.  Also, the motorized traffic is usually pretty sparse and is moving VERY slowly because it is an extremely gnarly “road”, attracting only expert 4WD drivers.  So, my point is, it is usually still a very pleasant trail for hikers, even if a few Jeeps are encountered along the way.)

https://girlonahike.com/the-fisher-towers-moab.html  This is a great hike.  But it begins a significant distance (up the Colorado River (128)) from our campground, so you’d want to start early.

https://www.blm.gov/visit/grandstaff-canyon-trailhead  This is a pleasant hike, ending at the impressive Morning Glory Natural Bridge, which is the 6th longest natural rock span in the United States.  @Dicey and her hubs joined me on this hike last year

https://www.blm.gov/visit/corona-arch-trail  Nice hike, featuring Corona Arch and Bow Tie Arch.  It can get hot, so it’s best to start this hike early.  @Dicey and her hubs joined me on this hike last year

https://girlonahike.com/looking-glass-rock-arch.html  I have never stopped to see this arch, but I might be interested if others want to check it out.  Looks pretty cool, but I wonder if it gets crowded…

https://www.blm.gov/visit/hidden-valley-trail  I think a few folks did this hike during our inaugural Moab Meetup, but I was not one of them.  I might be interested in doing it this year.

Arches National Park—lots of great hiking trails!  With lots of cool arches!! ($ entrance fee)

Dead Horse Point State Park (I have spent literally about 5 minutes there (several years ago), so I know almost nothing about it, except that the views are supposed to be amazing.  Costs $ to enter this state park.)

Canyonlands National Park (Island in the Sky district, and Needles district (Maze district is VERY remote)) lots of amazing trails!!!

https://www.nps.gov/arch/planyourvisit/fiery-furnace-hike.htm I have done this hike twice.  It’s pretty cool.  You do need reservations.  @ToTheMoon has also done this hike

Want to see Dinosaur Tracks?

https://www.blm.gov/visit/mill-canyon-dinosaur-trailhead-interpretive-site

Want to get your Art fix?

https://www.redrockartsfestival.com/

There are also plenty of galleries on the main drag in Moab.

Whew.  That’s a good start.  I will keep adding to this list as I think of things.  Other Moab Meetup Mavens, feel free to chime in with your ideas/comments!

Great list, thanks for compiling!

Hiking is a given, for me.  I'd be down for the Hidden Valley Trail, or any others.

I'm also bringing my bike. It has tires wider than a road bike but not knobby. OK off road, but not mountain bike type terrain.

Pool? I forgot they had that!!! Also thinking about paddleboarding, and HIGH ROPES! Would love to squeeze in All The Things, but there is limited time.

In related news, the timed entry system at Arches NP is set to expire on Oct. 3, 2022. This could be good news or bad news, but I'm guessing the former, especially if you're a seat-of-your-pants planner.

Flights and rental car booked! We'll be in Moab from Oct. 8-14. Looking forward to seeing you all, especially @Dicey and @NinetyFour ! We;ll be at a hotel close to Sun Outdoors Moab Downtown.

@Le Poisson, it works better for me and @MustachioedPistachio to have our own rental car but thank you again for offering!

Thanks. We are staying at the sun outdoors campground G section. Planning to stay in our partially converted MTB / Camper van.

We are bringing our bikes and will be down for some gravel / dirt road riding if anyone wants to join.

I will also throw in the paddle board

Not sure about hiking currently dealing with planter fasciitis :(

For food I will add the Moab Diner the sweet water skillet is great we go almost every time we are in Moab.

Hey Fellow Moab-ers. Does anyone own a ukulele they can bring with them? Moonpie and I play a bit of music, but we are traveling on one of those low-cost airlines that charges you to breath on the plane. I know 94 is planning on bringing a guitar and we would love to play a bit.

Also, just a general call for instruments to jam with. I can sneak a couple small percussion items into my luggage.

De-lurking to announce that I'm officially coming! I'll be driving down from the PNW with Muppet and staying at the campground from Oct 7-14. I'm renting a campervan locally, as that works better for me and dog.

I actually reserved a G site in early June...but so did ANOTHER lurking attendee (they can choose to reveal themselves here, if they want). We'll only need one of the two sites. (Does anyone want a G campground site? I'm about to cancel mine...)

I anticipate doing some low-key nature walks/hikes & other dog-friendly activities, plus hanging around at the fire, sharing some meals, and some chill time in nature. I'm doing PT on my knee, so no major mountain climbs for me.

Looking forward to finally making it to one of these!

Hey wow. I just looked on a map. We are going to be at a friend's place in Paonia, CO for the first couple of days of October, and that's only THREE HOURS away from Moab. I was picturing a much longer distance. So Wow.  It's looking like it could actually happen. Maybe now I'm a notch more than a maybe?? If it happens, we sleep in our car, so unsure what sort of campsite we'd need at the last minute.

Will anyone be in Moab on the 5th or 6th yet?

I slept in my car in one of the regular camp sites (tent, but in the same general area as the G sites) a couple of years ago.  A few of them are shady and nice.  Small, but nice enough to sleep in a car.  I'll be in my car again this year but I reserved a G site as I had thought a friend might be there with me in her van.  It will just be me, but I'm interested in seeing the difference.

Oh, no!!  So you’ll just be lazing around the campground drinking Polygamies and showing off your new t-shirt?

I guess I didn’t realize Paonia was that close to Moab!  Very cool!  Right now, it looks like there are still some sites available at the campground.  And they have a very generous cancellation policy.  Also, my campsite might not have room for an extra vehicle, but another MMMer’s site might have room?

Unfortunately, I cannot come out to Moab any earlier than the 7th, as I have an in person meeting in my town the evening of the 6th.

I hope it works out that you can come to Moab—I’d love to meet you and your hubs!

Ack—this meetup is happening in less than three weeks!!  I’m nervous.  And excited.  And nervous.

Some random thoughts:

Should I do another roll call to verify who is coming?  Or not?

If anyone wants to be able to contact me on my cell phone, send me a PM and I’ll give you my number.  I’m eager to do anything to make all the MMMers feel welcome and comfortable and happy.  :)

We can also use Zello as a means to stay in touch.  Except I kind of forget how it works.  @Le Poisson is currently up to his elbows planning the OTHER meetup…. And he is the Zello master.

We can also just use this thread to post ideas for activities as they arise.

Would name tags be helpful for the first couple days?

I am planning to drive to Moab in my Toyota Tundra with a slide-in pop-up camper.  Each morning, I can zip it all up and ferry folks around as needed.

I am also planning to bring basic camping things:  a very small backpacking stove, fuel for said stove, small cooking pots, utensils, cloth napkins, dish towels, etc.  If you want me to bring extras of any of these items, I’ll be happy to.  This would especially apply to the folks who are flying in from far-flung regions.

I have a couple extra camp chairs I can bring.  Can any of the driving folks bring extra chairs?  I would think the people arriving by air will not be able to bring chairs.  Although it’s kind of amazing what @ToTheMoon manages to get on an airplane…

Anything else???

Not to be a PITA, but a list of who's in what site(s) and when might be helpful.

I'm raising my hand to volunteer to make laminated mustaches that can be affixed to the campsite number posts, so that we can locate one another. Anyone with a good template, feel free to ping me otherwise, I'll let Sir Google be the artist.

I'm getting excited! Sending@NinetyFour a PM now with my number! Hopefully Mint has good coverage in Moab...

As for activities, @MustachioedPistachio and I are at a good level of fitness, so we're up for day hikes and similar outdoor activities. We're also good with exploring the town and sitting around cafes and campfires to socialize. But we want to lie in our hostel bed at night :)

I also think that it's a good idea to have name tags for the first few days. I'm not that great with names.

Thanks for the suggestions and the offers of help, my friend!  I love the idea of the laminated mustaches!

I’m going to try to compile what I know about who is coming and where they are staying.

Name tags will be wonderful, especially if they include your forum name and your real name.  And if they don't fall off easily.

I have a couple extra camp chairs that I will bring.

I'm at tent site 113, expecting to arrive early afternoon the 7th.

On this note - I am NOT planning to bring my paddleboard as the additional cost is not worth it unless I get out multiple times.

That said, DH, myself and @NinetyFour  have just booked a 4-hour guided paddleboard cruise on Thursday, October 13th - "Splish & Splash" (the 2:30pm departure) and we would LOVE if anyone else would like to join us!

They are already booked up from the 7-12th, so if you are even on the fence, I would encourage you to book and make your final decision closer to the departure date. (They have a 24 hour cancellation policy.)

So It looks like I'll be joining you all, finally.  G site, 7-14 Oct.  Yay!  I am super excited and have been talking about this for months.  Just ... not on the forum/in this thread.  I waited to post here until I was sure I could make it work.

(94, this time I'm willing to skip school for it)

I'm flying to SLC but may only have a ride one way to Moab.  Anyone heading from Moab to SLC on the 14th have room for a passenger?

I can probably bring a couple of camp chairs for the Fishes.  I'm bringing a tent for them so I'll toss in my extra chairs as well.  It occurred to me recently that they can't bring chairs on the plane.  Probably.

Your info is correct for me, 94. Moonpie and I will be arriving sometime on Friday and departing Monday. I expect we will want to continue our travels at that point, but we're going to wait and see.

We did not pay for a specific site #, so all I know for now is we are staying at one of the RV sites.

I would looooove nametags.

We are renting a camper van, so we will have some ability to share our tiny kitchen. We're planning to buy some cheapie camp chairs and some other supplies on our way out of Las Vegas. If anyone has a request for supplies, PM me and I'll add it to our shopping list.

Thanks for this great info, @LifeHappens .  I love all of it, EXCEPT…..I must insist that you stick around at least another day.  Notice that @ToTheMoon and @Dicey don’t even arrive until the 9th!!!!!  So you’re staying in Moab until at least the 11th.  OK?  OK.  Thanks for being agreeable to that.  I knew you’d see it my way.

I agree wholeheartedly that you need to stick around longer!

My DH and Moonpie need some time to chat about their old car sagas...

This one is pretty much done (1946 Plymouth Special Deluxe):

And this is the new project (1929 Ford Model-A Roadster):

I have Mint phone service and didn't notice any problems last year. But also, didn't have a place to recharge regularly since I was in a tent site, so didn't use it much either. I may not be the best gauge.

From the 7th through the 9th, is there room for a Venomous Spaz Beast and me?

We're leaning toward a cabin because of the long drive, the need to charge my damn hearing aids, and the VSB's comfort which is paramount. She's a service dog so the no pets rule doesn't apply to her. I will bring alcohol and haiku.
