I’m gonna try! I’ll be looking for others who are flying in to whatever is the closest airport to rent a car together.
I'm likely in figuring out family logistics of a 14 hour one way road trip
Did you spot the MMMer in the first picture??
That was my guess @oneday. Here's an easier one...
We're officially raising our hands, just like this. Moab 2022, here we come!
Oh and @boarder42, it's about a 14 hour drive for us, too. 100% worth it.
Will 2022 be the year I make it too Moab? I'm not ready to commit yet but I'd really like to think so.
Are families with young kids something that would fit into this meetup? We are still working, However, being Coloradans, we are only a few hours away and it looks fun!
Yeahhh Moab 2022!
I and my husband are definitely open to the idea, but we'll need specific dates to know for sure if we can commit or not :)

I'm so flattered to be tagged. I'm one of the cool kids!
Have no idea if I can make it but will be following the thread closely!!
Are you guys going to let me across the border this time? And will my peoples let me back in?
You know I am there again if I am able! (and I will remember to zip up my tent fully whilst we are out hiking so that I do not have 5lbs of fine sand blow into my sleeping bag again. That was a very exfoliating night!) :D
It’s about a four hour drive from Salt Lake City to Moab, over some gnarly mountains if it snows, as it did on us this past year.
In 2022, we plan to do the Moab meetup, but to fly into Grand Junction for a shorter drive.
We also will probably stay in a hotel rather than camp. The campground is very nice if you have a rig, but if you are not particularly outdoorsy and need to get up and to plumbing in the middle of the night, it can seem a longish and darkish trek from a cabin to the bathrooms.
@NinetyFour makes the most amazing campfires!
Did you spot the MMMer in the first picture??
It me? The background looks familiar...
Last year's meet up was a very fun time. A great opportunity to meet our illustrious leader in this venture, and other very cool MMM people! I love that it was Dicey's first MMMetup and she's a convert...the MMM people are just that great!
All that, in a spectacular landscape. Wow, I had no idea.
Toying with the idea of renting a cabin and freeing up cargo space for my bike! Or flying in and renting a car. Either way, would be open to sharing the cabin or car rental. @meadow lark , @Embok , anyone else?
That was my guess @oneday. Here's an easier one...

Oh I love moab just not sure our 2 and 4 year old would enjoy the road trip. We did one to Michigan last year and we'll do that again this year so we'll use that as a guage
I'm a probably. Car camping again. Following to find out the dates.

My thoughts as well, although I've looking at an order of magnitude shorter trip so would have far less of an understandable reason to miss it.
Looks great!
@innkeeper: Unlike the more formal Mustachian camps, the Moab meetup is small, and there is no formal agenda. So I think you could make it family friendly.
Last October those of us who attended coordinated certain activities, notably an all day trip to Arches National park and a tailgated lunch, an afternoon exploring Moab and having coffee, some visits to see petroglyphs and other smaller groups went hiking. We met around a campfire in the evening. Everyone also felt free to head off and do their own thing for a while — biking, hiking or strolling. My DH and I went on a jet boat tour, which was great fun. Moab offers many activities that ideally would be booked ahead.
Several of us attended a street fair and a very nice art show which highlighted paintings done by an artists who biked across America — his wife was there, telling stories about their trip — she was his support team. We ate a couple of takeout dinners together, but mostly did our own thing for breakfast and lunch due to different schedules and food preferences.
The campground itself has a small playground for children, which we saw being enjoyed. The town is a quaint and rather touristy small town. It is pleasant to walk around. There may be other places, like parks, where kids can play — not sure but there is a lot about Moab online. Of course the big draw is the fantastic local rocks and natural beauty.
We have a 26 year old who loves the outdoors and camps and rock climbs with her BF, so we are thinking about bringing them along in 2022 — they’d love it.
Bottom line, the vibe is relaxed, and you can join others in the group or not for any particular activity. My DH and I were the least outdoorsy people there, and we are not hikers, and I’d recently sprained an ankle that was still wonky, so for parts of the Arches Park day, we drove the small group but sometimes the gazelles among us went off hiking and we enjoyed the scenery from the car. The group was tolerant of our limitations. It was a very nice, very relaxed day, with some very silly humor.
Are families with young kids something that would fit into this meetup? We are still working, However, being Coloradans, we are only a few hours away and it looks fun!
Still talking to my wife but if we come it will likely be with a 2 and 4 year old
I would love to do this. DH and I drove from Detroit to Phoenix via Grand Junction and Moab in 2010. Arches and the drive on Highway 128 along the Colorado River were highlights of the trip.
The dates look iffy for me, but I'll PTF!
It looks like an 11 hour drive to me, but depending on the pandemic and other things, I'm a definite maybe. I'd have to break up the trip in Las Vegas.
PTF! It's close to 20 h drive from home, but we hope to be in CO at some point, maybe in October, then it'll be possible! I haven't been to Moab since grad school.
Wow, great to be mentioned with such a great group of desert appreciators. 😊
Pretty tough to figure out what the state of the world will be in October - especially the cross border travel situation - but I will definitely keep this event in mind as the year progresses.
So uh, that's "only" a three day drive from Toronto. Huh.
Edit to add map: https://goo.gl/maps/88eAXBk8VVCgeHNH7
... And because I need to know if I'd have to share a tent with @Jon_Snow.
MaybeProbably *this* will be the year Moonpie and I finally get a chance to rent a campervan and tour the southwest for a couple weeks. I will be following this thread.
One other thing to throw into the mix...
Canyonlands (Needles district) has three (I think) group campsites. They can be reserved 6 months in advance. I am toying with the idea of booking one of them for three or four nights--either prior to the Moab meetup or afterwards. If it turns out that I don't get a lot of MMMers who are interested, I could throw it open to friends in my town.
Camping in Needles is amazing. The hiking is spectacular. The night sky is incredible.
Be aware that there are no showers at this campground. But there are sinks and flush toilets.
At a nearby private campground, there are showers, so I think that if you were desperate, you could drive there and pay for a shower.
When we get closer to April, I'll ask for a show of hands to see how many folks might be interested in this. You could do this plus the Moab meetup or do one or the other. It's all good.
Needles is about a 1 hour drive from downtown Moab.
And, I have been to Needles a million times, so if you have questions about it, feel free to ask.
We've been to Moab 2x and skipped needles both times but want to make it the next time we go.
Not surprised this is such a hit with the crew from the last meetup. This city is awesome
Also want to make it up to dead horse haven't done that yet either
We're probably booking a cabin to make it simpler with the kids so when you firm up dates let us know. I'll get it booked if cancelling is easy.
Pardon me, Miss Eleanor Rigby would like to make sure that her kind are welcome in the group campsites. If so, she is definitely in. We loved our time in Needles and know there is so much more to explore, especially with such an experienced guide.
Already planning a trip to Moab in October to float down the Colorado and ride bikes. Depending on the dates we would be in.

Thanks for calling me out! I haven't been super active on the forums lately but checked in today.
I missed Moab 2021 because I was going to do a gravel bike ride in SC in October. However, I broke my ankle in September and was in a cast for 6 weeks so I had to cancel that. They didn't refund my entry, but I get to join in for October 2022, so I will probably be doing that. However, I will stay in this loop in case those plans change. Moab would be great indeed if I didn't have that conflict.
I have been hitting the gym since my recovery since I am committed to making 2022 the year I get back fully in shape!
Yeah this is a bad time for me unfortunately. Peak gig season for me (weddings and polka...plus in a normal year just plain venue/club gigs from people back from summer adventures or in school)
One day when I get sick of my band tho (total dysfunctional family vibes) I'll quit and could make it. My husband and I love that area and October is dope
I personally would rather contend with locals (Oct 22) than big city visitors. And I'm with you 100% on avoiding the Jeeps!
I will be busy elsewhere if it’s in October after October 15. That would be sad for me.
Yep, let's do this* again!!
@Longwaytogo
Grandma said yes to us yesterday - we are ditching the kids and flying in on the 9th, departing on the 14th! Woot woot!
Our (current, very preliminary plan) is to drive this in 2 days, with our Pop-up camper and a (waves hands in the air) capable vehicle. We'd go Toronto to some hotel someplace near Omaha (15 hrs), then Omaha to Moab (13 hrs). Give or take a few hundred miles per day. If anyone wanted to convoy up, that may or may not be fun. I can't decide.

Dang, that's a long drive!! (And back :D )
How many weeks are you planning on staying in Moab? Whats the longest you've left kids with grandparents in the past.
I only mention as if something should arise being a 4 hour drive plus 4 hour flight away may be easier then a 30 hour drive. But to each thier own.
I certainly hope to road trip out there eventually but I just feel it's too far for anything less then 2-3 weeks....month+ be even better.
I wound up flying to Salt lake, renting a car and driving the 4 hours. Even doing it that way I was ~16 hours door to tent. It was tough for a 5 day trip - 3 in Moab and 2 traveling basically.
A week would be easier and improve ratio 5:2 instead of 3:2 but I've never left my wife to wrangle kids more then 5 days; 3 or 4 is really her prefrence so Moab was a stretch.
Anyway.....hope you guys can make it work :) It is pretty awesome out there!!!
In the first message the phrase 'this campground' is a link to the campground website. Your sleuthing is correct, the one downtown.Hmm, seems they've had some changes. It's now called Sun Outdoors. The website is wonky as hell, so be persistent. Also, note this big change: "Unfortunately, we cannot allow fires at any site occupied by an RV or trailer."
I have reserved G3 for Oct 7-14 placing my hopes on their generous refund policy if I can't make it.
We had second thoughts and booked a flight, rental car, and site G7.This is a wise choice. I thought the driving plan was more than a little crazy.
Arriving in SLC on the 7th in early evening, departing on the 15th very late at night.
Our itinerary is very subject to change. It WILL include a t stop at Wasatch brewery in Park City to pick up a T-shirt.
Yep, let's do this* again!!
@Longwaytogo
Hi NinetyFour,
Thanks for thinking of me!!
I was actually just out in the desert last weekend (Vegas and Fire Valley State park). And I don't think a second solo trip is in the cards for this year. One of these days hopefully :)

So I just booked an RV site for Oct 7 - 12. Now I just need: plane tickets, RV and itinerary. Piece of cake!We had second thoughts and booked a flight, rental car, and site G7.

You HAVE to try a Polygamy Porter from Wasatch.
Update:
Turns out the fire rings are still there, but if you have propane ANYthing on your rig, you're not allowed to use it. She said it was the same policy last year, so it's clearly not communicated well or enforced :-)
Also, the rig size thing is crazy. I called corporate and they were spectacularly unhelpful. Told me there were no spaces available when the website shows plenty of availability, blah x 3. She did give me the direct number and they were awesome. We got the same site as last year (over near the playground) and I paid the lock fee, primarily because of the rig size craziness.
This is not a whine fest, I'm writing to post this nugget of usefulness: The direct number is 877-415-3991. Do NOT select the reservations option. You want option 2 for the actual location, which is now called Sun Outdoors Moab Downtown.
Whew!
Watching. May reserve at the Wyndham down the way. … I mean La Quinta. It’s around the corner.

HaHa, I assumed that's the T-shirt he wanted :D
I didn't make it to the actual brewery but I had one at the SLC airport on my first trip to Utah (actually went out there to ski a few years before the Moab adventure)

Panicking, because my plan was to get a cabin!!! Can hardly believe it's reservation time already.
@deborah would you mind sharing the cabin and splitting costs for a few of the days (Oct 7-9, 3 nights)? The cabins have 2 bunk beds (4 beds total) and I don't mind taking a top bunk if you already have room mates. I did the tent/car camping thing last year and it's fine but on top of the solo 14 hour drive it was a lot.
@Chaplin
Oooh I hope that your wife will be open to you coming!
It would be great to finally meet you and my DH needs someone to ride bikes with who is better than me! Lol
I found cabins still available if you book that M-F.I want to make sure @boarder42 sees this. Also, calling using the direct line above may produce better results. There are plenty of hotels/motels nearby as well. A combo of cabin nights and hotel nights might work.
I did a search on a brand of camper van rental I saw in a local parking lot. Travellers-autobarnrv.com has a fitted out campervan for rent for $81/day, or less than $700/week picking up in Las Vegas. Just to give an idea. This is awesome. Thank you! I've been looking around some and prices vary wildly. I'm hoping Moonpie agrees to a minivan because 1) easier to drive 2) waaaay better gas mileage.
If you can make a minivan work, sleeping in the back and cooking outside, it is around $400/week.
Just one data point to get started.
You can fly into Grand Junction. I think it's actually closer. @Embok may have some feedback on this option. We had second thoughts and booked a flight, rental car, and site G7.This is a wise choice. I thought the driving plan was more than a little crazy.

The longest road trip we've done was Toronto to Calgary - it took us 3 days to get there and 2 to get home. But we were younger back then. Of course, now cars are more comfortable. Shrug.
And yes, I must get a Polygamy Porter T-shirt on the drive from SLC to Moab. I've charted our drive from the airport to include a stop at the brewery.
I am very conflicted on SLC itself though. I have baggage there, and I can't decide whether spending a day in town would be a way to tie up loose ends or if it would be tearing open old trauma. That town represents stuff for me.
We are flying into Grand Junction this time. I did not love flying into SLC and doing the 4 hour drive on the interstate with the massive SUV the rental agency "upgraded" us to.I've had great luck with AutoSlash.
I am hoping the GJT experience will be much more relaxed, and we booked a Subaru Outback via Turo.com...about 40% cheaper than the rental agencies were quoting.
So the one thing I learned from the trucker convoys in Ottawa is that Zello is a great app for communications and coordination. I have taken the liberty of setting up a channel for this event. If anyone wants to test it with me, send me a DM and we can play.

I am downloading the app now...
Now we plan all manner of nefarious acts.

We definitely shouldn’t call the campground the Ram Ranch.
Zello is great...and creepy!
LeFish will update once the kinks are worked out :)

We are contemplating options too - we thought about RV's, nearby hotels, etc. and currently are looking at packable cots. At $100 each they can fly with us, get us off the ground, and mean we we can still be cheap and camp. But a real live bed has soooo much appeal.
(We may spend a few days in a hotel simply because no kids means more fun time IYKWIM)
Hey, @94: thanks for bat-signaling me! We have booked a place in Moab for 10/7 - 10/14 (not the campground though). Mr. Embok is excited as am I. Not sure yet if the DD and her BF will come, but we are ON!
We got Zello working.
If you are coming from Colorado via I70 taking the 128 cutoff makes for a scenic entrance into Moab
https://www.discovermoab.com/scenic-byway-u-128/
I think we can make it but I need to see about booking our rentals for the float trip before I know what days to book a camp site hopefully there are still some left by then.
If not the sand flats recreation area has first come first served site and even group sites that can be reserved in advance. Think the booking window for the group sites opens soon.

One other quick note:I saw what you did there ;-)
I am planning to, on April 14, grab a group site at Canyonlands (Needles) for October 14 - 17 for the Moab Meetup 2022 After Party. So, if anyone has the luxury of spending even s'more time in red rock country, consider heading down there for even more camping, hiking, and campfire chatting!

Anyone up for a zoom chat? I've tentatively set up a 45 minute on zoom for Tomorrow (March 27th) at 9:00 PM Eastern time. Could be fun to do a few of these as meet-n-greets ahead of the event.I think I can do that. Have you reached out to @NinetyFour? @Embok? @oneday?

Been out in Tucson Biking for a while and decided to stop in Moab on the way home ended up staying at the meetup location. Once we are home I will look into booking a spot
I'm booked for the week. I'll be driving down from Victoria and it sounds like @Stasher won't be able to make it. If anyone else is planning to show up on their own with a tent we could share the site.
I might be able to zoom- at least to pop in and say hi. We are going to CO sometime this summer/fall, and if we go in October, Moab will work.

MOAR FRIENDS!!!!!Don't know about food trucks, but in 2019 there was an incredible Mexican restaurant a short walk from the campground.
The more people who sign up, the better the chances of someone knowing a really good Mexican food truck are.
Moonpie and I have a campervan reserved to pick up in Vegas on Monday 10/3. I've reserved us two nights at Zion. Plans for Wednesday and Thursday are still fuzzy. We have a spot in the campground in Moab Fri-Mon am.
Unfortunately the 10th-15th are my very busy time at w*#k as I'll have monthly and quarterly reporting due, so I'm going to need to hole up with wifi for at least a day while the rest of you play.MOAR FRIENDS!!!!!Don't know about food trucks, but in 2019 there was an incredible Mexican restaurant a short walk from the campground.

Booked our site in the G section.
Planning to bike some gravel type routes like Onion Creek and might bring the SUP / Kayak and float some flat sections of the Colorado.
@NinetyFour that groups section you have at Needles can a 2 wheel drive van get to it? We are bringing the van to sleep in and might join for a night or two depending on the details.

Um... can we talk gear for a minute?
As forest-dwellers this desert thing is a little off our normal equipment list. We aren't planning on packing our canoe for the flight, but there are other things we are openly wondering about.
1. Tarp - seems reasonable to have for shade, but also, is there anything to tie off to? That gooseneck picture for instance makes me think that if we did bring it, we might find it too windy for it.
2. Hiking poles - are these a nice to have, or a must? We have some (snowshoeing) poles so it's just a matter of whether to pack them or not.
3. Sleeping arrangements - we are thinking packable cots with sleeping bags, but being off the ground is less insulation if it gets cold at night. We also have thermarest pads, low volume infatable pads, foam pads, and air mattresses, so loads of options (you know we camp sometimes, right?) but the cots are most comfy. Also I don't think scorpions or rattle skakes climb up into cots... do they? DO THEY!!!
4. Cooking gear - I don't think we need it in Moab (Restaurants) but if we venture afar, should we pack our own single-burner and pots/dishes and buy fuel when we arrive, or rely on the kindness of strangers.
5. Weird specialized desert shit that I haven't thought of. Should we be buying specialized Bedouin gear or those hats with the flap of cotton that goes over your neck, or any other stuff that forest dwellers haven't even heard of?
Thanks in advance for your answers and patience.

Thanks in advance for your answers and patience.
...for the after party.
So say I just showed up in my car would I have a place to sleep or park my car and split a camp site?
...for the after party.
After party? Sounds fun! Thanks to FIRE I have some flexibility and while I'm in the area, the more MTB and after-partying, the better! There are a fair number of free places to camp, even now I think, although I haven't been since 2003.
PTF... I have no idea if a road trip that long (30h) will be feasible for us, especially with a 7-month-old, but it sounds like exactly the kind of fun thing we want to do once my spouse quits. And it would be lovely to meet you all. So... put us down as a maybe, I guess? :-)
Also PTF after Dicey's mention in the 2022 cohort thread. I've been wanting to go visit all the Utah NPs and Grand Canyon at some point. This would be a good excuse! It'd be a long road trip for me, so I'll have to see if I can make it work, and get a new car by then. Or figure out details for flying/renting a car. But it sounds like it'll be a blast and like my kind of meetup, so I'm also a maybe.
I am PTF also, I hope I can make it, I am FI and have a SUV that I can sleep in as well as a tent, it is FAR from the east coast though. Last time I went to Moab 25 years ago was October, melon season and they had fresh honey dew and cantelope everywhere and it tasted amazing so look for that.
Fortunately we have a very experienced host who knows where all the tourists aren't.I am PTF also, I hope I can make it, I am FI and have a SUV that I can sleep in as well as a tent, it is FAR from the east coast though. Yes—VERY far from the east coast!! I think you’ll be shocked at how much Moab has changed (SOOOOO much development, and SOOOOOO many tourists), but I think it’s still an amazing place. I’m glad you are hoping to join us!
So say I just showed up in my car would I have a place to sleep or park my car and split a camp site?
Unless lots of other people descend upon my site, it seems highly likely there would be room for another car and tent. Someone will have room.
I've invited the whole 2022 cohort to Moab. There have been a few, "I'm such an introvert, I couldn't possibly do it" comments. I've decided to post reply to them here.
I am a mass of contradictions. I'm the most extroverted introvert you're ever likely to meet at a meetup, or maybe anywhere. Or maybe I'm the most introverted extrovert. I just know I need a lot of each in my life, which is weird. DH is more introverted and was reluctant as hell to attend Moab 2021. Nevertheless, I persisted.
Here's the good part: every one of the Moab 2021 Meetuppers described themselves as introverts and every damn one of them was FAN-TASTIC! Perhaps we are more comfortable because we know we will be with our tribe. I can't explain it, but it was a magical experience. I felt like I'd made more friends in a few days than I had in years. I'm literally counting the days until we can do it again. Better still, DH had a great time too, and he "knew" no one going into it.
If you can make it work, I strongly encourage you to do this thing. Oh, and the scenery doesn't suck, either.
Finally, a big shout-out to @NinetyFour, who makes the Moab Magic happen. I'm not worthy to carry her walking poles.
@Dicey maybe you are an ambivert.
+1 on the magical experience.
Thanks for the heads up on this @NinetyFour and others. Too early to make plans (not sure what I'm doing tomorrow yet ;-)) but am PTF. While I'm a bit of an introvert I generally enjoy being with people...for awhile. But I am mostly deaf so makes it harder to interact. I usually just smile and nod along with the conversations like an idiot and occasionally say stupid totally non-related stuff so I'm fun that way ;-).
My husband was willing to give Moab a go in 2021 despite his (mostly unstated) fears that he would not like it because he does not participate in the forums, and we are a bit older, way more indoorsy and far more sedentary than many of the Moab campers who were planning to be there.
But having participated last year, he has been gung ho to go again this year, and regularly asks after 94, oneday, Dicey and Mr. Dicey. My husband is generally a good guy but can be very critical sometimes -- but came away from Moab saying, '"your friends are really nice; I wish they lived closer."
We had a blast with the group. The folks in the group did some things together, others separately. As I've found in the two CM*TO camps I've been lucky to attend, the kind of people who tend to participate in Mustachianism and in these meetups tend to be really decent and thoughtful people, and tend also to be willing to enjoy each others' company but also accept each others' differences and need to do some things separately or in smaller groups sometimes. Honestly, it felt to me a bit like being back in college -- with really interesting people, some of whom had very different experiences and interests and skills, but were willing to share and just enjoy being together and learning about each other.
94 and oneday are much more athletic and much better walkers and hikers than we are; but we all enjoyed a trip to Arches National Park together. We drove and at various stops they gambolled up mountains and on boulders while DH and I stayed more tamely near the car, but I think we all had a blast. Another day we hit a little art fair. Many coffees in town were had. I'm trying to walk a little every day so I can build up my stamina after some serious foot problems over the past years, but I've gotta say, everyone was patient with me when I was slow.
The minute 94 pinged me about doing another Moab meetup in 2022, I asked my husband, and he was SO EXCITED to go. (As was I.)
This year we are making a concession to age and staying in a local hotel, mostly because late night plumbing is a necessity for us; but we are so looking forward to the campfires and to some outings. Anyway, there's a bit of "choose your own adventure" about this, but unlike some other group vacations we have had (viz., with my English cousin), the vibe at Moab was very relaxed, very "chill" and very accepting. Honestly, getting a chance to just hang out and enjoy in person some of the regulars in the Journals section was the best part --- it was like meeting old friends, only they were new ones, and it is such a delight to get to know some folks who are just such great people.
@Embok you convinced me. I was having the same concerns as your husband. Now I have to figure out where to stay, if I want to try car/small tent camping or hope to share a cabin with someone, or what. Is everyone staying in a certain area?
I assume I'd regret bringing my small, very well behaved dog.
I'm really hoping we can roll this in to my need to return to Seattle in the Fall for my 6-month hip surgery follow-up. My appt is currently August 9th but if I can move that to the end of the month I don't think Moab in mid-October would be out of the question. We'd visit some family in Arizona in between.
I am extremely disappointed to learn that the State of Utah has turned the free dispersed camping areas of Willow Springs Road and Dalton Wells into a state park now requiring fees to camp. $15 per night is a great price but it's just one more place you'll never again be able to stay on a whim. I would love to see the Needles District of Canyonlands! Delaying the start of the trip by almost a month would make our baby one month older which would probably make it easier to car camp across the country with her. It's a strong consideration!

I procured 5 shiny new skewers at a garage sale over the weekend. I figure there will be a need to make S'mores in greater quantity this year, so I want to be prepared. I'll be sure to source some organic dark chocolate and vegan marshmallows, too!

It's official! The meetup is in our trip plan. @NinetyFour Is the Needles after-party happening and is there a limit to the number of attendees? Trying to get a better handle on dates.

Looks like I might have snagged a bed at CMTO...so I will be coming to MOAB! Deborah kindly said I could share her cabin. Just have to find my passport.....
And not expired or within a year of being so. Yippee! That is happy news indeed!Looks like I might have snagged a bed at CMTO...so I will be coming to MOAB! Deborah kindly said I could share her cabin. Just have to find my passport.....
Woo hoo!!!!!!! This is most excellent news! Hope your passport is right where you last put it. ;-)
Have to say, I'm pretty excited at the prospect of meeting the legendary duo of happy and deborah. This is going to be one epic meetup.

I guarantee that you will be entranced by their many tales of travels!!
I agree that this is going to be epic!! We have many legends planning to attend—The Prospectors from Ontario, the fun LH duo from The Sunshine State, the Dicey-Embok-Oneday trifecta from CA, the MoonChild from the far north, The Singing Bird from The Bayou, the Green Man from the Carolinas, The Badass Aussie Travel Duo, and many others I can’t wait to meet!!! (And I’m really hoping that another Tall Canadian might be persuaded to join us…)

I am tempted to join in just so that I can hear Ninety Four's nickname for me. ;-)
Unfortunately I already have alternate plans in September and October.
I sure hope people have nametags or something. I get confused easily.
Is there some kind of regional airport in Moab? Most folks fly into Salt Lake City, or Las Vegas, or somewhere with a big airport. I'll be there with my car, but I'll probably only have room for 1 other as I'll have the mattress in the back. I'm happy to help as I can.
ETA: Hmm, seems there is one between Moab and Interstate 70 on 191. I'll defer to others about reliability to regional airports now. Looks like it is about 20 min away.
We got a direct flight - Toronto to SLC.It's a pretty easy drive once you're away from SLC and Provo. Pretty flat and wide open.
I figure the time we save on transfers is a fair trade for the drive down to camp.
Deborah and happy, I am afraid I know nothing about the little airport just outside Moab. Well, I know where it is, but that’s about it. If you really will be flying into that airport, I will be glad (heck, I’ll be honoUred!!) to pick you up and bring you to the campground. Also, I have room in my truck for 3 passengers comfortably, or 4 passengers slightly uncomfortably, so I would guess that you don’t need a rental car during your time in Moab. I imagine that several other folks will be renting cars (as they will be flying into airports several hours away), and will be able to give rides to others, too. One year, we needed to squeeze one more passenger into my truck, so I rode my bike to the trailhead and let someone else drive my truck! So, with a little creativity, we’ll make it all work! That would be wonderful. We would be very honoured to travel with you!

Sorry, no time to look it up right now, but isn't the airport in Grand Junction closer than SLC?Deborah and happy, I am afraid I know nothing about the little airport just outside Moab. Thank you @NinetyFour and @Chaplin! We dallied briefly with Le Fish's plan of going to SLC and driving, but have discarded that idea. Thanks once again.

I like the way you think; @Embok may be able to add a bit more shading to the decision.Sorry, no time to look it up right now, but isn't the airport in Grand Junction closer than SLC?Deborah and happy, I am afraid I know nothing about the little airport just outside Moab. It's a lot closer. Like hours of less driving.
Le Fish thinking goes like this (based on our travel day):
Flight from YTO to SLC = $495, 4h20min, 0 transfers
Rental car from SLC to Moab = $0 (Points), 3h45min
Total: $495, 8h05min
Flight from YTO to GJT = $656, 7h49m, 2 transfers
Rental Car from GJT to Moab = $0 (Points), 1h45min
Total: $656, 9h34min
So although GJT is a shorter drive, it's a longer travel day, and comes with the risk of 2 transfers at a time when a lot of flights are being cancelled or rescheduled. All of this pales in the face of the real deciding factor through, which is a chance to visit Wasatch Brewery to pick up a Polygamy Porter and hopefully, a matching T-shirt.
..... which is a chance to visit Wasatch Brewery to pick up a Polygamy Porter and hopefully, a matching T-shirt.
It's true. Also, draught beer in Utah is limited to 4% alcohol, so you can drink many. Much more fun than a Donner party...... which is a chance to visit Wasatch Brewery to pick up a Polygamy Porter and hopefully, a matching T-shirt.
The point of Polygamy Porter is that you shouldn't have just one.
Campsite reserved!
Hope to actually make it this year.
We're confirmed for Moab 2022!!!OMG, OMG, OMG! So exciting!!
Just made a deposit for the Lazy Lizard hostel. We'll be there from Oct. 6 to 15.
@MustachioedPistachio and I are making it a real road trip and driving over several days from Memphis - Moab and back to Memphis!
See you guys there!
Tent found. I'll put it up and make sure it is still functional and weather tight. It is 9'x9' and, I think 7' tall in the middle. This gives me the excuse to see if I want to keep it or pass it on.
Looking to caravan with anyone who might be driving to Moab on Thur/Fri Oct 6-7 and returning home Mon/Tue Oct 10-11.
Last year I left the SF Bay Area after work on Thursday and headed towards Reno, stopping overnight in Nevada, then continued to Moab via US-50. The way home was the southern route, through Las Vegas via I-15. This time I stopped just inside the Nevada border overnight.
Would likely do similar this year; open to taking the northern route through SLC via I-80 and/or doing the whole thing in one shot (out on Oct 7 and back on Oct 10 - or possibly Oct 11 if @deborah has room in her cabin for me for an extra night).
Any takers, either for the way out, way back, or both, would be most welcome. It's a slog for a solo driver. Yet I don't have room in my car (Honda Fit) for a second passenger and their luggage, since my bike will be in the back *unless* I can source a bike rack before then. In which case there is plenty of room for one additional person and gear.

Onesday, I live in Reno and have a guest bedroom so you can stay with me one night either coming or going on your trip. Must love dogs as I have 2 little Maltese.

I know, right? :D
Seems like every time I tell someone about my upcoming trip to Moab they ask how many people will be there. I tell them I guess probably somewhere between 50 and 100.
Am I anywhere near right?
Can we be called the Moab Meetup Mavens, pretty please?
Fixed that for me. Thank you!CanMay we be called the Moab Meetup Mavens, pretty please?
Your wish is my command! :)
Thanks for the reminder @NinetyFour .I do have it on my calender so will see where I am once it gets closer. Leaving my hovel in Calif in the next week or 2 for a long road trip (part by bike -squeeee) with not real plans or time limits and will show up last minute (my normal M.O.) if I can.
My biggest goal for the camping portion of this trip is to go hiking wherever Snoopy takes the little Woodstock campers. If I meet Spike I may come undone.I believe Spike lives in Needles, CA. It confused the hell out of me the first time I went to Moab. I think the "The" is important. Having been to both now, there is definitely a big difference.
I believe Spike lives in Needles. Must confirm.

Good question! I will attempt a sort of roll call to see if we can get a handle on the size of this esteemed group... (Apologies (Canadian style) if I forget anyone or make other errors.)

If you are still on the fence and have any questions, the Moab Meetup Mavens will, I'm sure, be glad to chime in with lots of info, reflections, and fond memories!

Plans have changed and it's now more convenient for us to fly Memphis to SLC or to CNY (closest airport to Moab) and rent a car from there. Any recommendations for car rentals? Otherwise we'll just go with the Expedia recommendations.Whew! Scared me for a moment. Check out flights from Grand Junction, too. I've gotten good deals on cars via Costco and even better ones using AutoSlash.

When do you arrive/depart? We are flying YTO to SLC and have a rental booked. There may be a chance to carpool.
All booked, including flights.
Still a maybe. We will be on a road trip to CO in September, still don't know when exactly.
That'll be front range visits and also some hikes up higher peaks, but part of the trip we'll head further west- depends on if my friends are at their place.
How close are you to Paonia? (I think that's the town where my friends are.) If our trip doesn't take us as far west as Moab, or as late as October, maybe we can swing through your neighborhood for a day or two?
Think we're a no this time-- too much other travel with a small baby queued up in this time period (CMTO two weeks before, family wedding two weeks after). Hopefully some future year!
Stingray and I will be there from 7th-11th. Still need to arrange the flights and car.
Present, Miss.
Our extraordinarily slow passport office sent me an email saying my renewal was complete and to expect it in the next week or so. Its coming together nicely.
Thanks for the call out! Since we posted last we decided to spend a ton of time and money so these plans were ignored a bit.. but now we have a new house and someone is renting our old one so we hope it was a good idea long term. We will have to stay as a "maybe" a little while longer, and it still depends on work schedules. Looks like there is still availability for the basic sites we would be wanting, so I'll talk to DW again tonight about it.
I am definitely a no this year. Looking forward to reading about all the fun y'all have!

@NinetyFour I didn't mean to be non-inclusive! See you all in October :DHaha, I didn't think you were. We're all excited to meet you and Mr. MP. Truth be told, I'm excited to meet everybody and to see the people I've met IRL again. Seriously excited...as in can't hardly stand the wait!
@NinetyFour I didn't mean to be non-inclusive! See you all in October :D
It was all over the nightly news and really a mess. Sadly a hiker is missing. Good thing it’s a month before you go.Um, do you mean the person in Zion? She's no longer missing, alas. If the reports are true, she exibited spectacularly poor judgement which makes it sadder still, but preventable.
1. Was Wasatch Brewery in SLC affected? SLC is a long way from Moab.I saw a quote somewhere that the worst thing you can for Moab is cancel your trip. They really rely on the visitor seasons to sustain their economy, so they're working like mad to get things put to rights asap.
2. Did Spike wash up in some gulch? Spike & Co. are still at home in Needles. The other Needles.
3. There is no 3. Whew!
4. Is our campground still there? IDK. No one's picking up the phone or returning calls yet. Water does flow through the lower part of the campground, so I'm a bit worried. Nothing on the website.
So it's Mill Creek and Pack Creek that were flooded. Our campground is on Pack Creek. This other one (https://kutv.com/news/local/moab-utah-flash-flood-up-the-creek-campground-damage-cleanup-brad-ariel-woodford), just a little ways away, but on Mill Creek has a pretty bad prognosis. There's so much good info in this post, I'm pulling it to the new page.
I threw up a few balloons in the Moab Reddits. We'll see if any of them float.
Edit to add: If you are going to Needles, this is the current state of the highway: https://www.reddit.com/r/moab/comments/wtlg6h/hwy_211_is_indeed_very_damaged/
1. Was Wasatch Brewery in SLC affected? SLC is a long way from Moab.

An amazing thing about desert climates is the extreme contrasts. No water any where, then water, water, everywhere, then no water anywhere. These magnificent vistas and canyons were in large measure created by massive water flows, so I'm thinking it's all going to work out in the end. It's just business as usual as far as Mother Nature is concerned.
Regarding the "Up the Creek" campground: That's where my friend's friend was staying. She said they had three minutes' warning. FoF is a military veteran and her training came in handy. She was in her bag, inside her tent, but everything else she had was in her Bug Out Bag at the front of the tent. She grabbed that bag and escaped to safety. Her tent and sleeping bag were later recovered and have been returned to her.

@Sailor Sam bat signaling Sam...sir will appreciate this story
Thanks for the update. I was wondering if there had been any damage If so, it would possibly be contained to the picnic area, extra parking lot and the tent-only area, as the bulk of the campground is almost 2 stories above Pack Creek. You're thinking what I'm thinking. I'm also guessing that a fair number of people have reservations for the lower tent sites, so I'm trying to confirm their status. I'll keep trying.
You can put us down for 2 people.
Warning in advance I am pretty quiet / reserved but my SO makes up for it multiple times over.
You cannot imagine the internal struggle going on in my head trying to decide to go it was an epic battle! In the end getting to meet and socialize with this small slice of society that embraces this odd idea of FIRE was enough to bring me out of my shell.
So if you see me sitting there quite not saying much just know there is a giddy little kid inside jumping for joy despite the outward appearance.

I’m going to attempt to put together a list of things to do/places to go in Moab. This is only meant as a resource. I want to stress again that attendees are absolutely welcome to do as much or as little as they want in terms of outdoor recreation, sharing meals with others, etc. Napping, lazing by the pool, reading a good book at the library, and hanging out at the evening campfires are totally legit activities!!
Flights and rental car booked! We'll be in Moab from Oct. 8-14. Looking forward to seeing you all, especially @Dicey and @NinetyFour ! We;ll be at a hotel close to Sun Outdoors Moab Downtown.
@Le Poisson, it works better for me and @MustachioedPistachio to have our own rental car but thank you again for offering!
You can put us down for 2 people.

This is great news!! Will you be staying at the campground (Sun Outdoors Moab Downtown)?
I’m so glad you convinced yourself that it will be worth coming out of your shell for this meetup! I am also pretty socially reserved, so I get it. I hope you will find that the MMMers in Moab will be interesting, welcoming, fun, and generous.
Looking forward to meeting you and your SO!!
Not sure about hiking currently dealing with planter fasciitis :(

Thanks. We are staying at the sun outdoors campground G section. Planning to stay in our partially converted MTB / Camper van.
We are bringing our bikes and will be down for some gravel / dirt road riding if anyone wants to join.
I will also throw in the paddle board
Not sure about hiking currently dealing with planter fasciitis :(
For food I will add the Moab Diner the sweet water skillet is great we go almost every time we are in Moab.

Me too! Our kid had it mid-covid lockdown as well. In my research I found out that plantar warts are the same virus strain as cold sores and herpes, which is fun to know, but useless information.

De-lurking to announce that I'm officially coming! I'll be driving down from the PNW with Muppet and staying at the campground from Oct 7-14. I'm renting a campervan locally, as that works better for me and dog.
I actually reserved a G site in early June...but so did ANOTHER lurking attendee (they can choose to reveal themselves here, if they want). We'll only need one of the two sites. (Does anyone want a G campground site? I'm about to cancel mine...)
I anticipate doing some low-key nature walks/hikes & other dog-friendly activities, plus hanging around at the fire, sharing some meals, and some chill time in nature. I'm doing PT on my knee, so no major mountain climbs for me.
Looking forward to finally making it to one of these!
Hey wow. I just looked on a map. We are going to be at a friend's place in Paonia, CO for the first couple of days of October, and that's only THREE HOURS away from Moab. I was picturing a much longer distance. So Wow. It's looking like it could actually happen. Maybe now I'm a notch more than a maybe?? If it happens, we sleep in our car, so unsure what sort of campsite we'd need at the last minute.
Will anyone be in Moab on the 5th or 6th yet?
Not to be a PITA, but a list of who's in what site(s) and when might be helpful.
I'm raising my hand to volunteer to make laminated mustaches that can be affixed to the campsite number posts, so that we can locate one another. Anyone with a good template, feel free to ping me otherwise, I'll let Sir Google be the artist.
Squee.....
I'm getting excited! Sending@NinetyFour a PM now with my number! Hopefully Mint has good coverage in Moab...
As for activities, @MustachioedPistachio and I are at a good level of fitness, so we're up for day hikes and similar outdoor activities. We're also good with exploring the town and sitting around cafes and campfires to socialize. But we want to lie in our hostel bed at night :)
I also think that it's a good idea to have name tags for the first few days. I'm not that great with names.
I have a couple extra camp chairs I can bring. Can any of the driving folks bring extra chairs? I would think the people arriving by air will not be able to bring chairs. Although it’s kind of amazing what @ToTheMoon manages to get on an airplane…
Anything else???
Name tags will be wonderful, especially if they include your forum name and your real name. And if they don't fall off easily.
I have a couple extra camp chairs that I will bring.
I'm at tent site 113, expecting to arrive early afternoon the 7th.
So It looks like I'll be joining you all, finally. G site, 7-14 Oct. Yay! I am super excited and have been talking about this for months. Just ... not on the forum/in this thread. I waited to post here until I was sure I could make it work.
(94, this time I'm willing to skip school for it)
I'm flying to SLC but may only have a ride one way to Moab. Anyone heading from Moab to SLC on the 14th have room for a passenger?
I can probably bring a couple of camp chairs for the Fishes. I'm bringing a tent for them so I'll toss in my extra chairs as well. It occurred to me recently that they can't bring chairs on the plane. Probably.
Your info is correct for me, 94. Moonpie and I will be arriving sometime on Friday and departing Monday. I expect we will want to continue our travels at that point, but we're going to wait and see.
We did not pay for a specific site #, so all I know for now is we are staying at one of the RV sites.
I would looooove nametags.
We are renting a camper van, so we will have some ability to share our tiny kitchen. We're planning to buy some cheapie camp chairs and some other supplies on our way out of Las Vegas. If anyone has a request for supplies, PM me and I'll add it to our shopping list.

Thanks for this great info, @LifeHappens . I love all of it, EXCEPT…..I must insist that you stick around at least another day. Notice that @ToTheMoon and @Dicey don’t even arrive until the 9th!!!!! So you’re staying in Moab until at least the 11th. OK? OK. Thanks for being agreeable to that. I knew you’d see it my way.

On this note - I am NOT planning to bring my paddleboard as the additional cost is not worth it unless I get out multiple times.
That said, DH, myself and @NinetyFour have just booked a 4-hour guided paddleboard cruise on Thursday, October 13th - "Splish & Splash" (the 2:30pm departure) and we would LOVE if anyone else would like to join us!
https://www.paddlemoab.com/stand-up-paddleboarding#splash
(https://www.paddlemoab.com/stand-up-paddleboarding#splash)
They are already booked up from the 7-12th, so if you are even on the fence, I would encourage you to book and make your final decision closer to the departure date. (They have a 24 hour cancellation policy.)
And I think the Poisson Dude knows a few things about cars…Hey don't forget us girl mechanics! I can (lie) about wrenching with the best of them ;-)
I am imagining the MMM Moab Meetup morphing into some kind of MMM Men and Motors group….
I'm now leaving on the 13th due to a flight schedule change.Totally! And I think the Poisson Dude knows a few things about cars…Hey don't forget us girl mechanics! I can (lie) about wrenching with the best of them ;-)

Not a mechanic, but I can drive a tractor, does that count?
From the 7th through the 9th, is there room for a Venomous Spaz Beast and me?
We're leaning toward a cabin because of the long drive, the need to charge my damn hearing aids, and the VSB's comfort which is paramount. She's a service dog so the no pets rule doesn't apply to her. I will bring alcohol and haiku.
Oh, and one of the extra camp chairs I’m bringing is……yours! And I can bring your cooler, too!
Wait! Who's bringing the strawberry pop-tarts?I'm now leaving on the 13th due to a flight schedule change. That's even better!! While my "professional" mechanic days are long over I still like fixing things...er...maybe I should say breaking things. Yeah that's about right. I believe @Sailor Sam would agree and add something about hiding in the bilges with all the strawberry pop tarts. And I think the Poisson Dude knows a few things about cars…Hey don't forget us girl mechanics! Sounds like ALOT of people are going. I'm still on the fence due to dog (old dog with doggie altzheimers) and travel issues but off tomorrow anyways and I will see how it goes.

Mosquitoes? They seem to love me. Will there be many there? Anything else to be prepared for? They love me, too. I put a brand new bottle of skeeter stuff in the rig before Moab '21. I needed it the other day and was surprised to see it had never been opened. The recent floods may have changed things a bit this year, so I would prepare, but not be overly worried. And of course, I'll have some on hand, but not before the 9th.
Hey @Chaplin, are you traveling solo or bringing the fambly? Also, will you please bring along a fresh update from our old pal whatshisname? Thanks!
Lol, I saw a 12 pack of Frosted Strawberry Pop Tarts (with sprinkles) for 3.49 at Grocery Outlet today. I solemnly admired them and I did not put them in my cart. I know I am not worthy. No pop tarts for you! That's officer territory food and not for the likes of the riff-raff. Unless, of course, you were a crafty snipe who stole them away down into the dark dirty bilges for greasy fingered fondling (Precioussss...). Only @Sailor Sam and the fish man know what Im talking about.Wait! Who's bringing the strawberry pop-tarts?I'm now leaving on the 13th due to a flight schedule change. That's even better!! Will anybody need extra camp chairs? I'm driving so it's not a big deal.

I am tempted to come. Considering taking Amtrak and the shuttle from SLC. Or can you take a road bike from SLC to Moab? Haha oh that’s a long way, never mind. Or I could be less dramatic and drive my ancient car.
Will anybody need extra camp chairs? I'm driving so it's not a big deal.
I'll be driving also so, if anyone flying wants something from Costco, let me know and I'll bring it. Or if you need a cooler, I have many neighbors who will lend one or more.
Looking forward to meeting everyone.
Not looking good. Humpy Jenga (named after esteemed forum member @monkey jenga) the dog is not doing travel well right now but still hopeful.
Me: 7-11 CG G site
Mosquitoes? They seem to love me. Will there be many there? Anything else to be prepared for?
Hope you all have an AMAZING trip!!
I'm jealous, but I will be doing a 4 day bike packing trip on the C&O canal next week and then a family camping trip the week after for 3 nights; so I at least have some fun planned :)
Wish i was there ..but just got back after 5 weeks holiday in Europe...
There is always next year though:))
Hey..any possibility of a Live Stream ? Even for a small portion ? would be a great encouragement to those who are considering future meetups!
I will also be getting a cabin, which will accommodate more than just me and the VSB. These are one room cabins that the site says can accommodate up to 6. There are two twin-over-full beds, and the VSB and I are calling dibs on one of the full beds, which leaves a full bed and two twins available if anyone wants to split.Just FYI, the cabins are smaller than they appear. Six would be very tight. Just ask @Embok.
@TheGrimSqueaker I would like dibs on a twin bed, will pay what’s fair for it!
Just thought I’d put it out there that I’d like to hike the Moab Rim trail on 10/8, if anyone would like to join me. The trailhead is only a few miles from our campground—I actually biked to it one year so that more people could fit in my truck. :) This is the “trail” that very serious Jeeps can do (very slowly), and at the top, we will get amazing views of Moab, the La Sal mountains, etc. I’ve done this hike during every Moab Meetup so far, so it’s become a bit of a tradition. :)
OMG! These guys were filming when we were there. Watch very carefully at about 4 minutes. Props to sharp-eyed Mr. Dicey for catching this.

I'm in!
Depending on the condition of my feet (plantar warts suck!) I may or may not tag along. Right now they are behaving nicely, but it's really day to day.
DH and I are so looking forward to seeing you all in Moab, though we cannot stay the whole week, because he has East Coast meetings towards the end of the week. I need to pin him down about what days we will actually be there.
The cabins are quite small. Four adults would be a lot. They are really just a sleeping room - fine for comping but basic. No water, but the campground has decent bathrooms and showers. DH wanted a hotel room this time, though, so we are staying at a local hotel.
I’m also in for hiking.
Is the Moab Rim the "PEOPLE HAVE DIED!!" trail? If so, we agree to hike it as long as everyone promises not to laugh at our poor sea level lungs. If you mean the curve where that warning is preceded by sharp words about getting the hell OFF your bike, I think that's on the other side of the river.
Dicey, my comment was meant as a joke that I now realize lacked context. It refers to a photo ToTheMoon took of that warning sign when we were in Moab in 2019.I was pretty sure of that. I should have separated the rest of my response, because it wasn't directed at you. I'm all about hospitality and I want everyone who's coming on this adventure to feel comfortable. Don't scare the crap out of them!
Got my train tix! I'm pulling into Green River early AM on 10/7 and leaving late afternoon on 10/11. Somewhat expensive. Tempted to take my road bike but it's almost 50 flat but isolated highway miles (looks like) from Green River to Moab so I think bus is better. But it looks like there are awesome road bike opportunities. Anyway if necessary I can add my bike. Also tempted to upgrade to a roomette since this will be a loooooong train ride. They have this weird thing called "bid up" where supposedly you bid to upgrade, but it's not clear if that's *additional* cost or total. It must be additional. Anyway I have taken rides this long before in coach so I know I can handle it.
Oh and I want to do the hike!
Oh, maybe I'll bring Trivial Pursuit! Can be played at camp, but also fun to just do it like a trivia game and take turns asking each other the questions. I could see doing this on a hike, once everyone knows their state capitols :)
Also will bring a few other games.

Looks like we have 27 badass MMMers on the list!! And I know there are a few others still trying to make arrangements/decisions. Hope I didn’t forget anyone!
This is going to be SO FUN!!!
If someone would be willing to share their tent spot with me (1 person, Corolla and small tent) I will go. Would be driving from Reno, NV. Have national park pass to share.
I also have a giant tent that I can lend to @Le Poisson and his DW, so don’t feel obligated. And I am bringing extra chairs, too.
Sorry about the back pain—hope you feel better soon!
@AlexK i will be arriving in Green River via train with my road bike around 8 am on 10/7 if you are passing through before noon and have room? I also will check out the hostel as I’ll need a place for 1 night after @TheGrimSqueaker leaves. Oh maybe you won’t arrive till the 8th?
Guess it’s not in the cards for me to head to Moab during Autumn. I woke up miserable and am positive for the Cooties. Dodge it for 3 years, it caught up with me sigh (I believe during my big bday work lunch). I had even added time beforehand to my trip to visit Zion for a day. But nope. Not happening.
I need to call the office tomorrow. If I absolutely cannot refund the full amount, I will ask if I can just put it into someone else’s name (Alex and/or Fru-Gal). Will keep you posted.
So bummed.
Is anyone passing through or driving from Salt Lake on Friday 10/7 who could give me a ride to Moab? I have the rest of the trip logistics covered, just lacking this bit.
I think there's a bus I can take if necessary.

We arrive on 10/7 at 7:20 PM. Our plan is up in the air at this point but may include a stop overnight at some random hotel along the highway. Or may mean dead-heading from SLC to camp in the dark. We can squeeze you into our budget rental car if you are willing to be squoze.

Thanks for the offer. I fly in on 10/6 and need to actually get to Moab on 10/7 though, for other logistical reasons.

What was the walk you guys (NinetyFour, TTM and friend) did a couple(?) of years ago where you signed up at different times but had permission to go together anyway and the ranger inside the canyon was trying to make you split up anyway? Those involved will know where I mean I hope. I'm thinking that may be a good hike for me to do this year. Sounded awesome and not too much climbing around. I do remember you had to sign up prior to going.

I'm passing through SLC on the 7th on my way, so yes! Probably mid-afternoonish. I'll send you a PM.
The campground graciously refunded me the full amount.
I've had a similar experience. You call Moab and leave a message...and get no response. Then you call the main corporate number and leave a message there. Eventually, they call you back when you don't hear the phone ring and leave the sweetest message saying to call back if you still need their help. Grrrr. Lather, rinse, repeat. Argh! The campground graciously refunded me the full amount.
This is a bit off-topic, but how the heck did you get a hold of them? I have called multiple times over the last 10 days and left messages, emailed them, spoken to people at the main reservations line etc and yet have not heard back from anyone! Trying to not be super annoyed with them...but I am super annoyed. :)
I called, no answer. Emailed and rec’d a response a couple hours later. And I spoke wrong, I was refunded over half and a credit was issued for the rest. Locked in for next year. :)

Not going to make it :-(. Returned my rental car and am still in Calif with the old demented dog who I won't leave now. Have fun everyone and remember: pictures or it didn't happen!!!
If someone would be willing to share their tent spot with me (1 person, Corolla and small tent) I will go. Would be driving from Reno, NV. Have national park pass to share.
UPDATE: I'm going, 8th to 13th. I Reserved a room at the Lazy Lizard Hostel about a mile down the road from the campground.
Driving from Reno, NV and will have extra room in the Corolla if anyone wants to carpool. Looking forward to meeting everyone and getting dirty hiking Moab. I'm also bringing a floatie to float the river if the opportunity arises. Considering bringing a bike too.
I also have a giant tent that I can lend to @Le Poisson and his DW, so don’t feel obligated. And I am bringing extra chairs, too.
Sorry about the back pain—hope you feel better soon!
Thanks for making sure we have a roof @NinetyFour! I checked our flight details today, and contrary to my romancing over driving route 66, it looks like we can only cancel our flight for a partial refund in credits, so I guess we're flying. Maybe next year we'll make a road trip of it.
Since we are flying, we'll really need a tent. If you have us covered (literally!) then we will be forever grateful and might even pick up a box of jiffy mix or a polygamy porter to show it.
So bummed.
Oh, that sucks. I hope your Covid dance is relatively easy and that we get to meet you next year. Because there will be a Moab Meetup 2023, right @NinetyFour?
Is anyone passing through or driving from Salt Lake on Friday 10/7 who could give me a ride to Moab? I have the rest of the trip logistics covered, just lacking this bit.
I think there's a bus I can take if necessary.
I'm passing through SLC on the 7th on my way, so yes! Probably mid-afternoonish. I'll send you a PM.
This is great! Thank you!
So sorry @Chippewa won't be able to make it. She's one of only 3 faces I will recognize. We can get together for lunch or something when it's all over.
Meanwhile, it's getting to be the last minute. Time to start running around in circles and trying to figure out what to take.
I washed and vacuumed my car today. Don't want you nice folks to think I'm the kind of person who carries hay and dogs in my car. I hardly recognize it now.
Mesquite Nevada is the halfway point for me so I plan to spend Thursday night in a hotel/casino there, then finish the drive on Friday. Better 2 easy days than 1 hard day.
I'll see all you folks soon!
We'll be at RV Site 13 7-14.
I'll bring Splendor and probably Uno.
Planning to join the hike Saturday.
Super looking forward to meeting y'all.
Update: Embok and Mr. Embok are still coming, but need to leave earlier than, planned, on Wednesday October 12. We are staying off site at the Moab Rustic Inn, which is not far from the camp.
So looking forward to seeing you all, and to enjoying the Moab area.
I cancelled our flight and our rental car yesterday...Spoiler: show

I am not sure it is reassuring to find out that everyone is receiving this lack of response, but thank you for commiserating! I just tried option 4, which was to message them via Facebook.
Calling directly and leaving messages = no dice, calling the reservations centre who will pass on a message to have them contact me = no dice, emailed them (7 days ago) = still no response. Maybe their social media person will actually get back to me? I haven't even been mean (yet!) Lol
I cancelled our flight and our rental car yesterday...That was an evil thing you did right there. I think my heart stopped for a whole minute. When I recovered, I started planning an elaborate prank to play on you in Moab. Revenge will be sweet.Spoiler: show
So have your arrival/departure dates changed at all? Are you now planning to swing through SW Colorado on your way home? ;-)
I’d love to bike with you, but I am way out of practice. I usually do the Bar M trails, or this loop: https://www.mtbproject.com/trail/592585/monitor-merrimac

Woot woot - turns out Facebook did the trick. Finally managed to cancel my site (hopefully @Chaplin will still share with us) and they refunded the deposit. Now I can turn up without shooting angry glances at the office people - Lol.I cancelled our flight and our rental car yesterday...That was an evil thing you did right there. We are aiming to keep our arrival and departures the same - we will just leave home a few hours earlier and get home a few hours later. Unfortunately I think my siblings would kill me if we left the kids and dog with them longer than the eight days - but we will do the road trip to you soon. It is on the list (and the kids new passport paperwork is with the gov't now.)
I haven't been on my bike much at all this year, so we will be just fine to go for some pedals. I have no intention of chasing DH and Chaplin around - they can thank me later. :)
And with regards to the prank...I probably deserve it, but please be kind!
What weight of sleeping bags are appropriate? We've been debating this. If the front sites had electric, we could go buy a cheap space heater if we under packed for space in our bags, but I don't think that's an option.
We are still trying to get through to have our arrival date adjusted to the 8th. So far, no dice.
Fellow Canucks... any Thanksgiving plans? We should go get turkey subs or something.

My G tent site had an electrical outlet last year. I’m not 100% sure that they all do.
I have an electric space heater and extension cords. I can bring them.

We don't want to overload your car with stuff for us! We can wait and see how night #1 goes and then make a call on need. The heaters are $35 at the local ACE hardware. But if you want to pack an extension cord, I'm sure it will come in handy for something. We used them at FIREscape to lay out the VolleyHockeyBall field. :)
I have this weekend free and am debating driving over from Colorado Springs to meet and hang out with all of you... Trying to catch up on the info and the thread.
1. If I want to sleep in my van, it looks like the only option at Sun Outdoors Moab Downtown is an RV site... is that correct? Tent spots appear to be no-vehicle.
2. To reserve a spot, can't I reserve online? The first page of this thread says to call but then I see other posts about how calling is unsuccessful (not sure if that's calling to cancel/change a reservation vs make a reservation though).
3. Besides this thread, is anyone starting any sort of group chat so that we can organize wheres/whens of hanging out?
4. Anyone need/want a ride from CO?

We don’t have any group chat set up other than this thread. However, we have also suggested the Zello app, which is free to download. There is a Moab channel already set up. It is called “MMM Moab”. My handle is NinetyFour. The channel is currently moderated by @Le Poisson. Zello was pretty handy at our recent meetup in Ontario, and can work well for the Moab meetup as well!

I know that vehicles are allowed at the G sites (Deluxe Tent sites), and @oneday used a Tent Site last year and might be able to tell you where she parked her vehicle. Right at her campsite, I think?

One major drawback of Zello I found at CMTO was that if you aren't connected at the time a message is sent, you don't get the message. For someone who prefers (or is able) to be digitally connected only some of the time, many messages get missed.
May I propose WhatsApp or a similar messaging service as an alternative?
Okay, try this link: https://chat.whatsapp.com/FlY58hg3zox6zI6FlSgOUp (https://chat.whatsapp.com/FlY58hg3zox6zI6FlSgOUp)

Opening the link from my phone let me join the group in Whatsapp, but it says "only admins can send messages".

Woo hoo!!
Thanks so much for jumping in and helping out with this!!
I downloaded what I believe to be a whatsapp program on my phone and my phone seems to think it's dangerous and won't open it.
Thanks TTM! I've joined.

Hi @oldladystache
I don't know what kind of phone you have, and I am about the furthest thing from tech support, but on an Android phone this is the app you are looking for:

I am not 100%, but I think if you download the app, and then click the link, it should connect the two together and you will be good to go!

So, I'll be bringing three or four extra folding camp chairs. I can't vouch for the smallest, oldest one which hasn't been used in a while. Plastic doesn't do well in the desert.

Have fun y'all!
I am too far south to be considered southern, so that was a little weird rolling off my tongue, but I am sticking with my choice of words.
I attended MOAB Meetup #1 and it was a great time. I am heading to the Carolinas soon myself so will be missing this meetup. I hope you all have a great time and maybe I can attend in a future year.
I'm checked in to a hotel in mesquite nevada. Exactly half way there. 6 hours drive done, 6 to go.
Happy and Deborah are checked into a Toronto hotel in order to catch a plane early tomorrow. It’s getting closer!
Made it to SLC tonight.
We're in Flagstaff.
Plan to get to Moab mid-afternoon tomorrow.
Ready to play some games!
The VSB and I have settled in at cabin 95. We have extra chairs, rum, and vodka to share, but lack ice.camp headquarters seems to be site G4.
Are we gathering anywhere tonight?
@oneday stopped by our house around 6 last evening and picked up the red canopy (borrowed from the library) and four camp chairs. We padded the load with recycled signs from a local election that I had forgotten were in the garage, loaded her up with snacks and waved her on her way. Hopefully she made it to Winnemucca easily.
Nametags are supposed to arrive at the campground today. Fingers crossed. @driftwood,if you ping me your first name, [thanks, 94] I'll make one and bring it with me. It will be toward the end of your stay, but at least you'll have one for posterity's sake.
Now to figure out that app...
Is anyone going to still be around there after the 18th? Picking up another rental car then and, if my dog can hack it now that she's on drugs and BF is around to go with me and help me out with her, I hoping to head eastward.
Back at home!
So nice to have met some of you, even if only briefly!
Total miles logged on the Prius this vacation 3490. Avg MPG 50.8
Check engine light came on with about 100 miles left... (Project for tomorrow)
Going to give it a try again but will depend on how doggo does. Plan to leave here Weds, go slowwwww with lots of stops, so will keep you posted via pm. Glad everyone is having fun there. Waiting for the photos here or in the journals. Is anyone going to still be around there after the 18th? Hey Sparty—it’s great that you are coming out to beautiful Moab!
I am leaving Moab on the 14th but am coming back out to Utah on the 21st or 22nd for just a couple days. I will be with a couple friends and am not sure where we will be. I will keep you posted!
Hey Magical MOAB Meetup 2022 alumni—
Just for fun, I’d be interested to hear what the top four highlights of the meetup were for you. No rush, no pressure. I’m pondering what mine were. Hard to choose just four!
Awe, sorry I missed you Lhamo! It would have been great to see you again (all of you, too!). I am looking forward to the 2023 meetup.
4. Getting my ass kicked mountain biking with @Le Poisson, @Chaplin, and @ToTheMoon's SO. Their badassery cannot be understated.

It's badass that you consider it a highlight rather than a lowlight. I think we had a bit of a miscommunication and put you straight into the deep end. The rear brake on that rental bike didn't do you any favors either. 'Great to meet you and Adventine!
That bike ride with @LifeHappens , Moonpie, @the_fixer and the_breaker. Those four helped me accomplish much more that I thought I was currently capable of. Plus it was a lot of fun, and beautiful!Aww. I'm glad you felt supported on the ride! It was really beautiful, especially the stretch along the river. I also love your forum name for the_fixer's spouse :)
#1. The peopleI missed you guys!! Sounds like a great time.
#2. The scenery
#3. Seeing the scenery with the amazing people! Many thanks to @FIFoFum and @NinetyFour for getting up so early to share two sunrises with me at Arches.
Hanging out with @shadowmoss reminiscing about SLN days was also awesome — @spartana hope you and our lily loving friend can make it some time.
Oh, and seeing everybody’s travel kits and gear was awesome, too. I’m going to try out a better mattress and see if I can sleep in my car on the way home.
@NinetyFour I Will pm you if I make it out that way. The doggo is doing good for now so we plan to leave Sunday instead but will take our time and hit the local mountains first. Octoberfest in Big Bear Lake!!
