Hello everyone! I would like to attend Moab this year and am coming from the bay area. Question: for those who are flying in, what is your plan to get to the campsite and back to the airport? Are most people renting a car or are there better options? And if renting, is anyone open to carpooling (splitting the cost)? I am very flexible on days/times. Thanks in advance!
There is a nice luxury bus that I took from Moab to Green River. It goes farther too. It’s called the Salt Lake express, look it up.
I did look into the bus when I came into GR last year on Amtrak. The only problem with the bus (from memory) is that is it only ran once per day at 1pm? and when I looked there was just one seat available. Knowing how notoriously late Amtrak could be I didn't want to risk booking a ticket, then missing the bus and having to wait (somewhere) for the next day's bus..
Hence begging for a ride (thankyou @NinetyFour ) seemed a better option.. Breakfast was cheaper too..:)
There will be a number of folks driving down from SLC and we all pretty much use the Whatsapp group, so if folks know to check their Whatsapp then catching a ride at various times seems like a reasonable prospect.
Yeah. It does run once a day.
However, can’t leave a misstatement about Amtrak without a correction. Amtrak has 75% on time performance.
https://www.bts.gov/content/amtrak-time-performance-trends-and-hours-delay-causeThis is the same level of on-time performance as Trenitalia. France’s trains are slightly higher at an average 87%, but they have frequent strikes (no train service at all).
Anecdotally, I have now ridden in the past few years every long distance Amtrak line in America except for two. I have experienced only two major delays. One was a mudslide over the lines coming into NYC, which affected every direction into the city — rectified in one day. This was a faster cleanup than the highways, which remained impassable for longer. Passengers were offered free travel via vouchers and free hotel stays. Another major delay was a power line that had fallen over the tracks. Because I’ve traveled Amtrak so much, I actually knew exactly how to Uber around the problem and take an alternative bus-train combo home — ironically, arriving 3 hours earlier than I would have gotten there otherwise.
If you ask Amtrak customer service for assistance they will usually pay for the inconvenience of any major delay. 1-800-USA-RAIL.
But the biggest thing is, I don’t worry about the concept of “delays”. I’m watching the world, I’m reading, I’m writing/drawing/conversing/listening to music… what is a delay, anyway?
