A city full of young people and an amazing bike system/community.

Any other aspiring mustachians out there?

I wouldn't be opposed to that.  I'm 23 and in grad school at the U.  My dad introduced me to MMM and I've converted a couple of friends, so I know some other people in the area who might be interested in a meetup as well.

I'm in Rice Lake Wisconsin, closer to the cities than Madison.  I'm certainly up for a meetup if the timing works out.

I'm in Winona, MN - smack dab between most of you folks. Not sure if I'd be able to get to any meetups, but it would be fun!

I'm in Minneapolis, and have a job offer for Epic in Madison. I may not take it though, it's apparently 60-70 hrs a week.

Salmp, do you go to the U of M?

Hey I'm from Madison! Did this meet up already happen? Am I too late to the party? If not let's seriously get something set up. I'd love to meet some like minded individuals as most of my friends only care about going out to the bars or restaurants and wasting money. So let me know when this is going down.

We live in Waunakee area and I work at the medical school downtown.  Leaving the prius at home and doing my first bike commute this week, yay!  We will be leaving in July as I am entering medical school in Phoenix, but we would love to meet up with like minded individuals before our trip!

Hi fellow MN/WI'ers! I am originally from Hudson, WI but moved out to Connecticut four years ago. I sure miss home though! I love MN/WI and someday hope to move back. It'll take quite a bit of convincing for my Connecticutian wife though...

Also on the near east side.  Must be the mustachian neighborhood in town.  Maybe we could meet up at glass nickel on Atwood?  Or the Harmony?  Thoughts?

I once had a job offer at Epic.  You might find some Mustachians there.  They're all young people fresh out of college.  They're all making more than they ought to and they all work way too much to have time to spend it ;) (I hope you don't work there).

Haha, luckily no.  I know people who do, and feel sorry for them every day.

I do have one friend who is old like me (30, at Epic, is ancient) who loves it.  He was in quantum chemistry at Stanford, so he basically traded one 70 hr/wk job for another, but doubled his salary.

The guys is crazy.

Another Twin Cities resident here - open to a Mustachian meetup!

(Teacherman - We lived in Shelton CT for three years before moving back to MN eight years ago. As much as I enjoyed living in the tri-state (and the frequently trips into Manhattan), I'm very glad we moved back.)

I'm definitely down for this. July 10th sounds good to me. I'll be moving to Chicago a week later but it will be great to finally meet some Mustachians in Madison! (My girlfriend is the only person I know in Madison who I'd classify as Mustachian. She doesn't read this site but she's a natural-born Mustachian...she'll probably be interested in coming with.)

On the subject of Epic - I've worked there for 2 years and I haven't found the "white-collar sweatshop" image to be particularly true (except for implementers, who pretty much give up their lives). This is actually my last week working there, but I'm leaving mainly due to boredom and possibly being in the wrong field. The hours have mostly been pretty reasonable (as far as full-time jobs go...)

Hey Madison folks, quick location-specific question for you... I'm flying into town Wednesday afternoon for an interview on Thursday. I'll have a rental car to myself and probably 6-8 hours to burn, and I'd like to get a good feel for the area while I have the chance. Any recommendations of things to do, places to see, or good local restaurants? I saw the meetup above and plan on joining, as long as you don't mind a non-Madisonian crashing the party ;-)

Thanks!

The Terrace is a gigantic outdoor lake-side patio restaurant thing on the campus but open to everyone. Brats and beer, or nothing if you want the cheapest route.

I'm fairly new to town, and I'm sure others will have ideas.

I'd say the terrace is a good bet.  Hit up Old Fashioned for some WI style food and beer, make sure to get the deep fried cheese curds as they are great.  You can get a good feel for the city in the general "square" area surrounding the capital.

If you're considering a move here I'd also drive down willy (williamston) street/Atwood Ave to get a feel for the near east side, as that's a different style Madison that a lot of people like.

What's the interview for?

Alrighty, well I'll be there.  Since I have no idea who/how many are showing up, I'm just going to plop myself at the bar around 6:45.  Dark maroon dress shirt and jeans, look like an IT guy.  I'll keep my eyes peeled for other IT looking folks walking in... ;)

Hey Madisonians,

I will be visiting Madison from Oct 22-26, taking classes at the Epic campus in Verona on the 23rd-25th.

1) I'll be free in the evenings, and would love to get together with any local mustachians - Friday fish fry, brats, cheese curds... It might not be the most mustachian option to do dinner out, but I am getting my meals covered, so... at least it's mustachian for me  :-) and I can share. Or I could pick something up potluck style and meet elsewhere.

2) Probably a long shot, but... I was wondering if anyone could rent or loan me a bike that I could use for the 18 mile commute from my hotel to Epic. It's a great route - mostly on the paved Capital City Trail, but the last couple of miles are either on street, or on the packed dirt/gravel Military Ridge Trail for which I'd probably want something more durable than skinny 23mm racing tires. Last time I did this, I rented from "budget bike shop", but they seriously charge more to rent a bike than it costs to rent a car... $40 a day for something that I wasn't sure would carry me the distance, $60 a day for something decent, or $75 a day for a premium bike!?!?!? Since the hotel offers a free shuttle, work won't pay for the bike, but it's worth it to me to spend a bit to ride and get the exercise in, so I'm happy to split the difference between free and what a shop would charge. A bike with touring tires, a rack, fenders, and drop bars would fulfill all my dreams. I'm 6' tall, but 31" inseam, so a bike that fits someone around 5'10 would work just fine.

@Russ, I don't suppose Trek offers 3 day test rides for loyal customers??? ;-)

3) Any mustachians at Epic?

When I was in town we went out to eat and it seemed like everyone wished we were doing a potluck, so maybe we could set something like that up? Or go out, I'm fine with it for special occasions.

I have a CX bike you could use, about your size,  no racks and only a shitty clamp-on-the-seatpost rear fender though. It might be a little difficult to get to you depending on where I end up living, but I'm sure we can work something out (or maybe somebody else has a better suited bike)

hey everybody, in case you missed it there's a meetup going down in Milwaukee on the 14th. I would really rather not be the only person there, so you should go too. It might even be fun ;-)
