Madison WI July Meetup
« on: April 22, 2014, 05:59:06 PM »
summer's here (close enough at least), let's do stuff

options:
so many parks and outdoorsy things
potluck, at someone's house or elsewhere
concerts on the square start end of June
eat out again (shame on us?)
or whatever else you come up with!

I'm not really free until late May (24th onward) so I titled this May/June, but if people want to meet earlier don't let me stop you!

Suite.

One option that would be terrible for a meetup but sounds fun:
The Madison 56ers, our local fourth tier soccer team, have a few games late May and June. They play at Breese Stevens, which is a "stadium" on East Washington. I think people bring buckets and bang on them during the game. It does cost money, but I think it's pretty cheap. Not a great place for conversation, probably.

Otherwise, I'm free most weekends and would love to meet up. I am very happy to prepare some food objects.

Essen Haus!

That way we can just split boots :)

I think you guys had it on far east side last time. Could we do something a little more central or west siddddddde this time?

We're new to the forum but would be interested in meeting up with fellow Madison mustachians if the date and location works out.  We are flexible but would prefer downtown or the near west side of Madison.  Thanks!

Near East, Downtown, and Near West are my preferred locations, but I'm flexible on that front.

yeah we ended up a little further east than I intended last time...

Essen Haus would be alright, or anywhere else central / near west side now that the weather is nice enough that I could ride over there. We could also do a picnic at any of our wonderful parks, or on campus somewhere. I would like to eventually move away from the restaurant-every-time thing.

I'd offer to potluck at my place, but I'm all the way over in Sun Prairie.

I'm pro doing a picnic at a park. I've never been to the Arboretum, and everyone assures me it's a good place to go.

I'm ok with going to a restaurant, but I'd like to enjoy above-freezing temperatures when we have them.

Yeah I'd rather do an outdoors thing as well. Essen haus was just off the top of my/kind of a joke.

The arboretum would be nice but they don't allow picnics. I'm guessing due to concerns over litter. We should be able to find an awesome Madison park though. There are 260 of them after all.  :D

so, picnic it is then. I'm going to suggest Vilas Park: slightly more westish, plus alcohol is not prohibited ;-)

dates? I'm out the 7th and the weekend of the 13th, but the rest of June is open for me

I'm up for anytime but the last weekend of June, but I do have a question for puny, bicycle-less Mustachians like me. How in the world do you get parking over by Vilas? I went this weekend, and it was almost impossible to find a parking spot. There were probably 10 other cars that we could see circling per 30 second time interval.

Alright, next weekend just opened up for me, so let's say Saturday the 14th! That way everyone who has chimed in so far can make it.

6/14, picnic, Vilas Park. there will also be at least one frisbee

2:00-ish? I'm thinking approximately second lunch / first dinner

Radical. Our fridge is full of greens, so I'll bring a big green salad.

I guess this might need to be a bring your own fork thing?

Salad party! I can bring forks / plates / cups / whatever. Might be riding up to Devil's Lake after this for a bit of camping, so I'll have the bike trailer full of that sort of thing anyway.

It was good! Four of us met up for some food and hanging out under the shade. Weather was wonderful.

I'm sure we could get ourselves organized and do these more often. This one was cheap and easy to get to.

Hey all -- When I saw this thread, I had to chime in.  I'm a former cheesehead, currently living in Nashville.  We met up with some family down in Orange Beach, AL last week.  While we were there, we met a guy who used to live in Madison.  We got talking about it, and he said he had to move because "there is nothing to do in Madison."  I just looked at him like he was crazy.  Seriously?  Nothing to do in Madison?  Seems like there is always something going on up there.  I sure miss being there.  Hope you all had a great meetup!

Agreed, was fun. You all down for something in the next month or two again? My weekends are already booked up to late August, but we could do a weeknight thing.

It was definitely fun. I'm in for a weeknight thing. I'm on vacation from Saturday until July 8, but after that I'm pretty free most Mondays or Thursdays.

It's been a while since any activity, so I'll make a suggestion: some weeknight thing in the next week or two. Preferably outside. Evening picnic?

For such a small group as the Madison Mustachians, it's got to be pretty easy for us get something together on short notice.

Also, I'm pretty brand spanking new to the forums, so forgive any forwardness I may have let slip.

Nah, forwardness is cool. I'm pretty bad at planning these things, so feel free to take over if you'd like.

I'm scheduled daily through 8/10, but that doesn't mean you can't get together without me.

Welcome! You are absolutely right - we can get together on short notice. An evening picnic sounds great! I live on the southwest side of Madison (very close to Verona), but I'm cool with hanging out about anywhere.

Is it really just ch12 and me? In this entire town of nearly half a million, with the money machine that is Epic sitting only 10 miles away, we can't get more than three people on a thread about meeting up?

Damn, we have some proselytizing to do.

How about next... Tuesday or Wednesday in the evening, a park somewhat centrally located? We can plan our strategy for making this a Mustachian Mecca.

Either one of those dates works for me. 29 or 30.

Vilas was nice last time. We could do Reynolds or Tenney on the Isthmus or somewhere else? All of the above work well for me.

Vilas works for me. Tuesday is actually slightly better than Wednesday, so let's plan on that. I'm time agnostic, but will throw 6:30 pm out there as a suggestion (although I might need to drive if it goes late since I don't have lights on my work-in-progress bike).

So: Vilas, Tuesday the 29th at 6:30 pm. Work for everybody?

Tuesday isn't the best day for me. I'd need to be back at work at 7, so 6:30 wouldn't work. Could we do Wednesday around 6:30? I'd ask for a bit earlier, but I shamefully drive (instead of biking like everyone else), and thus I care about rush hour traffic.

Reading your other posts, I'm guessing that you used to work where senecando and I currently work, so you know where we're coming from.

I am very familiar with that traffic; I pass it at 15 mph every day on the bike path. Let's change this to Wednesday, and I can certainly be at the park by 6.

I want to get a confirmation that I won't be the only one there:

Wednesday, July 30, at Henry Vilas Park, aiming to meet between 6 and 6:30.

Yes, you won't be the only one there. Due to rush hour traffic, I'll probably get there closer to 6:30 than 6. It's about 20 minutes without traffic from my apartment, and I don't know how hard it'll be to get there at the prime traffic peak of the day (as much traffic as Madison gets, anyway).

Senecando says he'll be there, too.

Hey guys, me and my significant other are coming out to visit Madison in November to scout it out. We're thinking of moving there next year in May so we wanted to get a brief teaser of the cold and see if we could handle it. Anything you guys would recommend for checking out/exploring? Anybody have anything to say about the idea of moving out there?

I could always start a separate thread, just wanted to take advantage of all of you being in this thread already :) Thanks!

Probably a separate thread would be good, though I'm not sure where to put it. As it gets closer, you might want to try to set up a meet and greet while you're in town, too.

Out of an extreme desire not to e late coupled with giving myself time to be lost since its the first time I have come to Vilas Park solo, I am here at a ridiculously early time. You can see the girl wearing a gray skirt and blue shirt.
