The Liberty Forum was better than expected. Going into it, I'd heard of the keynote speaker before, but otherwise didn't know much else. What I did not find was a mass of pale 30 year-old dudes hanging around with weaponry (a common Libertarian stereotype). What I found there were 500 mostly normal people. Well, as normal on the people on this forum anyway! Sure, there were a few overly-enthusiastic people there, so imbued with anarchist thinking that they can barely communicate about anything else. But the vast majority were unarmed, liberty-minded people who enjoy doing for themselves. And talking to them was pretty refreshing.... not clear common "mainstream hurdles" makes conversation easy. A base level of common agreement could be assumed. For example, it was universally understood that government restrictions on tiny houses is stupid. That was nice.
For the sessions, there were usually two going on concurrently. The constitution, home schooling, cop block, bitcoin, approval voting, and the New Hampshire legislative process are examples of topics covered. Two NH representatives ran that last session, and only like 10 people showed up! Maybe I'm just a nerd, but having direct access to two people involved in the process was pretty cool.
Of course since the host of the Liberty Forum is the
Free State Project, there were a lot of conversations about moving to NH. There was a large percentage of people who moved for the FSP, or moved pre-FSP because they liked what NH had to offer. This made it easy to ask questions about moving for those that were curious. There was also a group of people from out-of-state with not intention of moving, but enjoy spending time with like-minded people.
Those living in the NH / Boston area might want to check it out next year.
